We loved staying at the General Palmer Hotel. We did not stay in the main building and there were no elevators, but we did not mind carrying our luggage up the flight of stairs. What awaited us was an extremely clean, pristine room. Our room had hardwood floors, which I really liked. Yes, the train whistle can be heard, but we were up before the trains sound their whistles, so that was no big deal. The lobby in the main part of the hotel is beautiful and elegant. Being right on the main street was so convenient to shops and restaurants. No need to worry about finding parking because we had the best place to park at the General Palmer. Staff checking us in were so nice and the staff in general were very friendly. I really appreciated how clean and comfortable our room was. The bed was comfortable and linens were luxurious. Thank you to the employees who made this a very relaxing stay! And a big shout out to the housekeeping, because they do a superb job.

Amy, Lucia, Rosa, and many other staff members were more than accommodating. The Palmer is a historic gem near so many beautiful sites. The rooms are so clean and comfortable. There is coffee on every level and in the room. The entrance always smells like fresh baked cookies. The views from the rooms are gorgeous. The balcony and elevator are to die for. I look forward to coming back to Durango and staying at the General Palmer.

This was the nicest hotel I stayed at during a two week road trip to the Southwest. I arrived a little early thinking I would just park my car and walk around town but they had a room available. It met all my requests. A lovely room on the third floor of the main building which gave me lots of opportunity to use the oldest elevator still in operation in Colorado. The staff were excellent and service oriented. Breakfast was quite good. Coffee/Tea was available on each floor and all day in the lobby. I would highly recommend staying here.

Our party had 2 queen rooms. We loved the historical furnishings in the rooms and the hotel in general. The elevator was cool as was the library. The breakfast buffet was yummy! We had waffles, eggs, sausage links, and biscuits and gravy. There was also cereal and pastries. Fresh coffee 24 hours a day appealed to my husband. The front desk guys were amazing. You could tell how much they loved their job. They helped us find our way around the area. We highly recommend this historic gem in the heart of Durango!

Chandler was the most attentive and caring person I've ever come across at a hotel. The entire staff made us feel at home and welcome to a town we were visiting. They were super helpful with directions and recommendations. The room was tidy, clean welcoming. I will 100% be back to stay.

We loved staying at the Grand Palmer Hotel! Clean, fun old fashioned furniture and rooms, friendly staff, and free breakfast. The hotel is also right next to an old fashioned railroad station and you can watch the trains leaving the station each morning and returning in the afternoon. I would for sure stay in the Grand Palmer again!

I have always loved the General Palmer, but I was particularly impressed by their service this stay. One of our friends was injured in a bike race that his son was still in. Though they had already checked out of their room, the front desk team set him up with juice, water, coffee, and a makeshift table for his things while they waited for his son to finish. They were so kind and helpful.

My husband and I stayed for one night while driving cross country. Friendly welcome, beautiful room, comfortable bed. Unexpected luxury: I loved the unbelievably soft towels and the robes! We also enjoyed just lounging in the main floor and people watching. Breakfast included two egg bakes and fresh pastries. I’d go again!

Yelp
We highly recommend the General Palmer Hotel in Durango, Colorado! We have stayed at the General Palmer Hotel on many occasions and our most recent trip was fantastic! We planned to trailer our motorcycle for this trip and prior to making reservations, we contacted management to ensure we would be able to park our truck, trailer, and motorcycle in the hotel's parking lot. We were ensured that we would be able to do so. Upon arrival, when checking in, we met with Oksana and Amy at the front desk. While speaking with Oksana and mentioning the parking situation, Amy immediately went outside to help with the parking of our vehicles. She didn't hesitate for a moment to ensure we would be able to park the vehicles with no problem. Soon after, Oksana was outside helping us bring our luggage into our room. The hotel, as always, was clean - from our room to the lobby to the stairwell! It is an old hotel, built in the late 1800s, so if you enjoy history, you will enjoy staying here! We enjoyed the simple FREE breakfast - juice, coffee, Danish, egg/sausage casserole, etc. If you are looking for a more hearty breakfast, we recommend the Durango Diner. But the light FREE breakfast offered near the lobby was fine for us and we enjoyed talking to other guests over coffee. We took the Durango-Silverton Train Ride, so this is the perfect place to stay! If you do not enjoy an occasional train horn, then you may want to look elsewhere - but we enjoy hearing the train! We had the pleasure of staying in the Presidential Suite and the additional living area was perfect for us as we needed to work a bit while on vacation for 8 days. It was clean, comfortable, and roomy! (Note there is another building with additional rooms and there is no elevator in that building. So, if you need an elevator, be sure to ask about staying in the main building.) The hotel is located right in the heart of downtown Durango, making it so easy and convenient to walk to restaurants, shops, art galleries and more! We cannot say enough about the hotel's 2nd floor and 3rd floor patio - the decks overlook the train station, the town of Durango, and you don't want to miss having a beverage while watching the sunset!

Yelp
Seemed high priced to me, but in Durango, everything is higher than I expected. Neat old hotel right by the train to Silverton. Stayed in a king room in the palace wing. Upstairs and had a little seating area on the shared balcony. Staff was very accommodating, I wasn't happy with the first room because it wasn't what I had expected. The lady at the desk was happy to switch us to a room that better fit what I thought we had reserved. Breakfast was included with our room. Neat place, but older so expect rooms to reflect that ( a little smaller).

Ryan E.

Yelp
Great old hotel. BEWARE THE TRAIN. next door is the Durango Silverton steam train. During the tourist season there are multiple trains that leave before 930, with multiple steam whistles. Not the place if you are trying to sleep in. Great breakfast. Very convenient location, all of downtown Durango is walkable from here.

Yelp
Buyer beware! Recently booked a "standard room" through the AAA website for just under $300 at the General Palmer. When we arrived we were informed that the room had NO WINDOWS. We did not want the room when we learned this, and were refused a refund because we booked through a third party. AAA was also refused a refund on our behalf. Here are some thoughts about this. 1.) I have travelled extensively and never encountered a "Standard Room" that had no windows. 2.) $290 including taxes seems very high for a room without windows. 3.) The hotel does a disservice to those booking by not describing what an interior room means. 4.). If you want to stay at a nice hotel in Durango, stay at the Strater and forget the General Palmer.

Yelp
On our trip to Durango I wanted to stay in this hotel for a couple of reasons. 1. I stayed here many, many years ago 2. It's right next to the train station 3. It's on main street, and is right in the middle of historic downtown There are two sayings that come to mind. "Nothing stays the same but change" and "You can never go back again" True the town has grown since I've been here, and it looks completely different, even the General Palmer Hotel looks different compared to the pictures I have of years past. Upon entering it is very dark, very victorian, and very charming.u Let me start out with the positive. The staff was awesome. Very kind, and stealthy. We were given three options for maid service. 1. Full Service 2. As needed or 3. No service. We chose #2 As needed. After checking in we headed to the TINY elevator that can fit maybe 3 people if they are on the skinny side, and definitely not with luggage. After the first attempt we just took the stars, it was faster, and less nerve wracking. When we checked into our original room there was old food, and garbage stuffed into the drawer of the night stand. Obviously this room wasn't cleaned properly, or sanitized for covid. When we told the evening receptionist he quickly apologized, and gave us another room, looking out onto main street, which we inspected right away. Upon entry we could see the room was dirty. The bed was made up, and things in their place, but the carpet was soooo dirty, and the armchair was worn, and you could see dirt on it as well. Coffee pot was dusty. I didn't feel safe to make any coffee in it. Thankfully there was a McDonald's right next door. Blinds/lamps/dresser were dusty. After getting a closer look it just needs new everything. The bathroom had been remodeled, I'd say within the last few years. We were nervous if the sheets had been changed from the last occupants so we inspected them as well. We pulled the mattress back to see if there were any bed bugs. We didn't see any, and it looked like the mattress was fairly new. Lots of pillows on the king size bed. No typical bedspread. We had to use a blanket out of our car because there was only a sheet and light blanket. Our room was on the second floor looking out towards main street. You can hear the train every once in awhile. That didn't bother me as I love to hear the train, and it does stop around 10pm. There wasn't any street noise because the town closes up at 6pm. If you visit any other time when Covid isn't around, I'm sure you would be able to hear the street noise, as the windows were not insulated. On the way down to get some dinner we encountered a couple going down the stairs, this is the one an only time we ever saw any other person at the hotel besides the receptionist. We asked at the desk some recommendations to eat at and headed out the front door. Mind you this town is on lock down, all businesses close at 6pm. Restaurants, and bars can stay open until 8pm but NO inside seating. Take out only. In the morning I was on my way to McDonald's to get some coffee when the receptionist told me that they had coffee available. Great, that will save me from having to get in the car and drive over to McDonald's because they only serve through the drive thru, no inside eating. I had a very nice conversation with the night receptionist for awhile, and then I decided I would sit in one of the drawing rooms, and finish drinking my coffee. I decided to sit on one of the sofa's Whomp! I fell right into the cushion. There wasn't much padding, and what there was, was so lumpy, and uncomfortable I had to move, and move from one chair/sofa to the other. I finally just sat in one of the chairs, and drank my coffee. After sitting there for awhile, and looking around, I could see the dust on the furniture. No sanitizing here. (They do have hand sanitizer, and masks available by the doors.) There is a creepy doll sitting on one of the cabinets, the kind that you see in horror movies, unsettling for me. On check out day my daughter starting packing the car and I asked her to grab me a cup of coffee when she came back to the room. She came back empty handed and I asked her why. She said "They don't make coffee during the week." What? Why? They told her because they don't have enough people staying at the hotel to make it. The breakfast that has been offered in the past, is no long available as long as covid is around. When we got home, is when we realized, we left my grandson's charger to his Nintendo Switch in the room. As a customer service it would have been nice for the management to mail us the charge back or at the very least call us and ask us if we would like them to mail it back, at our charge. Nope, nothing, no communication and a lost charger. Durango is a charming little quaint town with lots of outdoor activities to enjoy. I definitely would come back here after covid. If I do, I would stay at a different hotel.

Yelp
We stayed in the Palace Annex and our room waslarge, lovely, and period appropriate. Breakfast was very tasty. I cannot say enough good things about the front desk staff! If you are going to Durango to ride the train, this is a great place to stay. You are on the edge of downtown so shops and restaurants are across the street.

Old Man W.

Yelp
There are certain amenities I look for in a hotel. Parking that is close. Check. Staff that are responsible. Check. A bed white a nice mattress and pillow. Double check. A tall shower that puts out hot water and is convenient for someone over 6'. Check. This hotel has that and more.

Richard W.

Yelp
We have stayed at this location on two prior occasions, so thought it would be a fantastic place to spend our anniversary. We were not impressed on this trip. We founds bugs in the room, we had to run the hot water in the bathtub for approximately 5 minutes to get hot water in the sink, and the breakfast was pitiful, compared to the past. The employee said they couldn't fine enough employees to work the breakfast area. We travel all the time and other hotels don't seemed to have a problem. This location must have a new owner, it definitely not the same,

Jess M.

Yelp
We had a very nice experience...so much so that we reserved a 2nd night. We stayed in the 2 bedroom suite. The shower head was amazing. The room was clean other than the Kurig. I would offer a higher review but no wifi was a bummer and the main lobby didn't have the nice cookies they are known for and the breakfast was pretty lousy. The room itself was so beautiful and we will for sure stay again.

Princess B.

Yelp
General Palmer staff is really helpful & accommodating. Their little tea/coffee bar is super cute. They have chocolate chip cookies in the afternoon. Their breakfast in the hotel is meager, but they do have the option to go to the Lone Spur cafe, half a block away. Their breakfast is ok, definitely diner. We stayed in the annex and the beds were comfy. The heater can be a bit challenging to figure out at first, but it warms everything up pretty quickly. We didn't get have any teddy bears in our room.

Robbie F.

Yelp
This is a historic hotel and it's decorated so fabulously the staff is very friendly and accommodations were super comfortable I love this hotel and will definitely be back

David W.

Yelp
I am there now...room 256 on the other side of the parking lot. Folks smoking and drinking outside the room. Think cheap motel. I was booked for 2 nights. We are leaving as soon as we can. This is simple bate and switch. Every picture (Bookings.com) shows the main building. The only thing "old" about this place is the copper keys they want $20 for if you lose and the ocean wave music maker in the room. On checking in I was told I could cancel my 2nd night. So I did. Then I was told it was up to the manager if I would get a refund. I asked to speak to the manager, and well, not here till tomorrow. I'm gone anyway.

Yelp
We absolutely enjoyed a wonderfully relaxing stay at the luxurious GENERAL PALMER HOTEL in Durango, CO. The award-winning historic hotel was built in 1898, and is full of charm, nostalgia, reminiscence, and is conveniently located right in the middle of Durango's major downtown restaurants, shops, as well as adjacent to the spectacular Durango-Silverton Railroad Station & Museum. Our room was beautifully decorated - like all the other luxury rooms - and hotel service was friendly, immediate and outstanding. Only downside was the complimentary morning breakfast: the small selection of fruits and cereal were good, but the eggs and sausages were extremely dry; next time we'll get breakfast at one of the numerous great restaurants just walking distances away. In any case, we had a superb calming experience at his Hotel and definitely recommend it.

Joe M.

Yelp
Well things are looking up. Moving to Presidential Suite for tonight then to regular suite for Tues night. Will post updates tomorrow. Changed to Master King Suite for final nights stay. Great suite like other 2 we stayed in. Great Free upgrades. Checked out this morning hassle free. Paul the new Manager got us wonderful rooms. Best the General had to offer.

Tom C.

Yelp
Rooms are great, bellman, housekeeping great. The desk folks need a bit more training on local establishments and where they are located. But overall a good experience.

Dan D.

Yelp
Great old historical hotel overlooking the Durango Silverton narrow gauge railway station. Delightful staff. Quant, Cozy, great location. Decent breakfast included also. Comfy beds. Very affordable for what you get.

Yelp
Went on a bus trip in Durango and stayed at this hotel. When I first arrived at General Palmer, had a really good impression on the entire hotel. Really cute Teddy Bear collection at the door, old fashion interior but is definitely modified and looks pretty new, the girl at the check-in desk was super sweet. But then, it was rather frustrating experience that it took us 3 times to eventually get our room. Okay we did check in early, but you could've just told us once that I need to wait till 4pm instead of saying 4 times that you will be ready in 10 mins... What irritated me more was...the house of maintenance literally kicked me out 10am in the morning during my last day of staying...OMFG what kinda service was that?! Not to mention the stain on the blanket.... Free WIFI? You do need to ask the desk about the pw. I still really like the hotel, since Durango actually ended up become one of my favorite town and I really do like the hotel overall. But not sure if I would try it again...

Yelp
Great location, authentic, and great breakfast (voucher)! This hotel is nicely decorated and even features an old timey elevator. While cute at first, it is quite tiny and can become a bit of a hassle. However, I'm glad they kept it! Our room was clean and the bathroom was remodeled. The closet was a perfect size with lovely bathrobes. The room was a bit small but that was expected for a historic hotel. We didn't hear a lot of noise the whole time; it was quiet. The main issues we had were the pillows (too soft!), the thermostat (which kept the room either too cold or too hot), and the bathroom doorknob wouldn't lock. The first morning of our stay, we had the continental breakfast, which was disappointing. HOWEVER, they gave us a hot breakfast voucher the next morning. This voucher gave us a free breakfast at a nearby restaurant. It was great! The location was perfect: downtown, near the train, close to food, nice window view, a picturesque setting. If you are coming for the train, this is a prime location. We would happily stay here again!

Kathryne P.

Yelp
Lovely hotel with great staff especially Sarah, she was very friendly and attentive. The rooms are clean, the beds are very comfortable and the amenities are excellent. We stayed here a week and compared to the Strater hotel, I like the General Palmer better. Our heater broke so they moved us within minutes to room 305 I recommend it had two windows, we were very pleased and will be back. The billing is really weird at check out but when you do the math it all comes out correct.

Linda T.

Yelp
We were unable to take showers because the water was brown. Full of dirt. When we informed the front desk they told us it was a problem with the city water. They compensated us with a gift card for a free stay at the Palmer house within the next month but since we live more than 1000 miles away, that gift is meaningless to us. The room was nice. The people who work there were very kind. Breakfast was good. But we were disappointed that we couldn't take showers.

Jack Q.

Yelp
The Hotel has many of the original lobby factures. The room are all different. The one we had was large with a King bed. The fresh baked cookie in the Evening are Wonderful. Easy walk to the Historic downtown and Restaurant. The breakfast is not worth eating.

Janine R.

Yelp
Great stay! Found availability last minute. In the heart of downtown and minutes from the Silverton Durango train depot (another great experience). Room was charming. Mattress was super comfy. Small details were noted: silver spoons with coffee set up (not plastic), fluffy robes, quality bath products. Next time in Durango, we'll definitely stay again.

Geoff S.

Yelp
This hotel is terrific. I business travel a lot - and I try to get deals at interesting places. (the standard chains can be so boring and "the same") This place is absolutely a visual treat! Staff was kind. Room was super clean. Breakfast was included (across the street) was good. Found a great price online at the last minute.

Max G.

Yelp
Lots of free tea and cookies in the lobby, which ALMOST made up for how far from closing I was with the gorgeous girl behind the reception counter. Yeah, the place is quaint, the rooms come with a pre-snuggled teddy bear, and for Durango it's in a hip part of town. But if you're expecting to just whip your California cock out and score because it's snowing outside and logically there is no other party besides the one in your pants, this is the wrong place.

Faith D.

Yelp
We visited from Kauai and stayed here a few years ago and absolute love it !can't wait to go back ,beautiful hotel love the antiques ,friendly and helpful staff . Great location in the middle of town and next to the train to silverton ,thanks for making our trip so special !

Terri J.

Yelp
This was our 5th time to stay here since 2001. The staff was friendly as usual. We had a queen room overlooking the main street. Cookies & coffee always available in the lobby. Staff are very friendly. It is a historic hotel, room very elegant, bed very comfortable. In the heart of downtown- felt very safe and walking distance to shopping. Sat outside on the 2nd floor balcony and watched the Silverton-Durango train leave in the morning and return in the evening.

Brett S.

Yelp
I have not had a hotel experience like this in a long time. The hotel is old and yes the rooms are smaller than more modern hotel rooms but we stayed in room 310 and it was very cozy. It has a lot of period wood furniture. The hotel itself is quiet. We came on a very busy weekend and we were not bothered at all by other guests. The older hotels are very nice when it comes to this, they actually have walls that keep the noise out. Room 310 is an interior room, that strangely enough, does have a window which would open out into the hallway. Not sure if this is a leftover from an expansion on the building or if it was something that they used to do in older hotels. The bed was large, the mattress was new, the pillows were new and the linens were top-notch. We slept very comfortably. The room was very nice and very clean and there are many amenities that you don't find them in newer hotels. It had a set of coffee cups, wine glasses and water glasses that you could use. It also had robes, bottled water, tv and plenty of places to sit. There was a ceiling fan and a table fan that you could use if gets too hot. Unfortunately if I had any complaints at all about this hotel is that it was very warm at night because of the central heating. But the fans really helped us keep cool. Breakfast was Continental and it had bagels, breads, hard-boiled eggs, cheese omelets, sausage, granola, yogurt, milk, and juice. There is a coffee / Tea Bar which had availability at all hours. It was near the front desk. Bottom line we highly recommend and will be returning.

Yelp
WOW!!! That is truly the only word that comes to my mind while recalling my stay at this hotel. My wife and I were getting ready to celebrate our first wedding anniversary and decided to make the drive up to Durango. When my wife and I arrived we were greeted at the front desk by an awesome gentleman who's name escapes me unfortunately, I told him my name and he smiled a big smile and said "You're going to looooove your room." My wife and I boarded the elevator that seems to be original to the building with a sliding metal grate and just large enough to fit two and their luggage, it was one of my favorite parts of the hotel, and pushed the 2 button to get to our room. The gentleman at the front desk wasn't joking, our room was magnificent. It had a huge king size bed, a jacuzzi tub, a bar and a huge leather couch. I figured there was no way this was the room that we booked for the modest price that we paid, we are broke newlyweds in college after all. I would later find out that the hotels General Manager Paula had found out that we were making the trek up there for our first anniversary and moved us into the Presidential suite. To sum up, I want to thank you Paula and your staff from the bottom of my heart for an amazing, memorable first anniversary. Thank you. Alan.

Ellie N.

Yelp
First of all, the hotel is a beautifully restored building. The location in Durango (which was a surprisingly lovely city) was absolutely perfect. We were early to check-in and our room wasn't ready (no problem). They did offer us a parking pass (which was nice) and politely said they'd call when it was ready. We never did get a call - minor glitch but no big deal. When we did get to our room, it was a two-bedroom, rather than the three-bedroom we'd booked. I returned back to the desk, showing them our reservation. As there were only sleeping arrangements for 4, rather than the 5 we were traveling with, we were offered a pillow and blanket for the floor as the room we booked was under construction. (Not even kidding!) When I bulked (um, cause, no, that wasn't going to work) they saw that there was a notation that we were to also have a second room. (Supposedly we were to have received a call to verify this adjustment was okay but we never did.) So, we were separated but, whatever... at least we all had beds (and an additional bathroom was convenient). Next problem... the two-bedroom room was freezing! Absolutely frigid... like don't want to take your pants off to use the toilet cold. The second room we'd received was nice and warm. The controllers in this room worked just fine, which clearly indicated to us that there was something wrong with the two-bedroom. We called down to the front desk. They sent someone up to instructed us that it was central heat and that it would turn on "in an hour or so." It didn't. (Shocking I know.) Next morning, as we are checking out, I notify the attendant at the desk as to the heat frustration. She was lovely and apologetic. She explains in professional terms that the front desk manager is an idiot and that the building we were in did not have central heat and we should have been helped. Long story short, were we just a couple traveling through and had we just received the one room we had extra, we may be writing a very different review. That room was warm, newly renovated and seemed to be what one would expect at such a hotel. But our experience, not so lovely. Cold, falling apart and, basically, not great. Perhaps other folks can toss around $300 bucks. But, for what we paid, I was definitely hoping for a better experience.

Amanda G.

Yelp
So it was a few days before my anniversary weekend (two years with E!) and we couldn't afford a big trip (like San Diego last year). So we decided on a staycation - an amazing dinner from Ken & Sue's that I separately reviewed, and a night's stay at a lovely hotel. It was a toss-up between the Palmer and the Strater, and I picked the Palmer because E has always said he'd love to stay there. Next time, though, I am definitely checking out the Strater. They have a hot tub. What to say about the Palmer...Well, it's gorgeous, for one. I had always admired it from the outside, but the inside is amazing too. It's like stepping back into the 1800s, with beautiful marble and antique furniture and even a stuffed peacock on top of a buffet that always holds fresh coffee! That's the lovely thing that I liked the most - there's always coffee and a little bowl of chocolates in the lobby, and a plate of cookies in the evening for a little nibble before bedtime! The girl at the desk was extremely nice and knew my name before I had even shown any ID. The Palmer gives you actual metal keys, instead of plastic cards, and then gives you two options for getting upstairs...you can hike up the stairs or take their very old elevator. It has a metal gate and nicely fits two people and an overnight bag. It's pretty awesome :) Our room was nice, with comfy off-white linens on the bed, a huge closet, and a flat-screen TV. Thy also have little mini Keurig coffee makers with K-cups for morning coffee. E was thrilled that the machine was a mini version of the one we have at home. They also have glasses for water instead of plastic cups. I'm all about the little things :) The one touch that really won me over, though, is the proliferation of teddy bears. There's a whole two couches full of them in the lobby that always provides a smile if you're walking by, but each room also comes with its own teddy. Ours was adorable, and the only thing that would have made it better was if the teddy bear came with the room. Unfortunately, the teddy bears come with a sign that says "Adopt Me! For $25 and up..." Yikes. That's a lot for a teddy bear! Overall, a very fun and enjoyable experience. I'm so glad that I decided to stay in town for the weekend and enjoy my town, one that so many other people make a destination for their vacations. What a wonderful weekend!

Yelp
A fantastic hotel, that you indeed pay for the luxury and simplicity for. Thankfully a AAA member or even better military discount will shave off a little bit of a substantial room fee. Even for the price the room was super quaint, comfy, great bed, and the rustic feel. The entire hotel near made us feel (as we rode in on our enduro bikes from a 5 day trip sans showers) like we were true modern day cowboys holdin' up in a legit western victorian style hotel. Very kind staff, great coffee bar with fresh cookies, and the breakfast wasn't half bad either. Essentially you're paying for the atmosphere, but I dare say it's worth it, especially with a great outter deck view of the old time coal driven train on it's trip up to Quray and Silverton.

Yelp
Although this is an historic old hotel in Durango Colorado and the decor was magnificent the actual hotel accommodations left alot to be desired. First and foremost at check-in the clerk was the least friendly and caring person I've come across in sometime. And, although the clerk at check out seemed nicer, she did not care whatsoever about our comments regarding our stay. The room was beautifully appointed in old Victorian style with all of the nice amenities afforded by more expensive hotels. However our particular room had no windows and no ventilation save for a small vent above our door. Even with the ceiling fan running and an additional table top fan, the room was unbearably hot. The thermostat was set so that it could not be changed and we sweltered the entire time. It was a very Uncomfortable night. When we mentioned this at checkout we were met with a blank stare. The breakfast fare with the room was not even up to mid priced hotel chain standards. Having enjoyed our stay at The Strater Hotel nearby, so much two years ago, this came as a disappointment. We will not return.

Yelp
We loved our stay here. The free double chocolate and macadamia nut cookies with coffee in the lobby after 12 definitely sweetened the deal. Other perks: They bring breakfast to your room, for free. Luxurious bathrobes. Exfoliating bars. Wonderful service.

Yelp
We chose to stay downtown knowing from reviews on Yelp that the train was close. Forgot reviews to request an exterior room for a window! Cloister phobic in size and we quickly got hot. Ceiling fan did not work even though we figured out the small slide dial was on the wall light switch to the fan. Called down to the front desk for a repair and he forgot! Dang-- we sat in the room waiting for repairmen's arrival wasting precious time for touring the town! Finally left the room asked at the front desk and realized clerk was apparently stoned, bellman apparently also partook because he was just as loopy. Made it through a hot night and thank goodness the competent female agent in the morning took care of us and changed our room to an upgrade at no extra charge. Much better set up in the smaller annex building with a king bed. Had to hurtle in though because of the very high bed and during the night bathroom breaks meant moving the step stool between sides which is impossible in the dark! Walking distance to many great restaurants. Nice to have complementary breakfast served room service style.

Yelp
Hotel is nicely renovated with good service. Our room had a queen murphy bed. Comfy bed with down pillows and comforter. Nice towels and bath robes. Very period on the main drag. The steam whistle will wake you up at 7:30 with all the tourist trains going to silverton. The wifi is so slow to be unusable at times. During dinner hour, it was fast.

Yelp
Great location! Comfy bed. Very clean. Friendly staff. Hotel breakfast is adequate but the voucher for a hot breakfast down the street is well worth it. I read lots of reviews about some rooms not having a window. We were in one of those rooms and I gotta say I didn't miss the window. I'm not one to stare out a hotel window anyway so it was no loss to me. The hotel is aur conditioned so it's not like we needed the cool night air to sleep comfortably. Constant flow of coffee and fresh cookies is real bonus! Yum!

Yelp
Beautiful authentic old hotel and without the usual musty and perfumey smells. Nice breakfast and friendly if somewhat clueless staff. After checking into our interior room (no windows) we thought it was warm. Could not get AC to work so called the desk. They said the building's boiler was on so they could not turn on the AC. They said they'd try tho and call me back. Of course, they never did. Was not a comfortable night. Since the hotel is so quiet, they should have offered us an exterior room with a window to regulate the heat. Instead my wife and I spent our following vacation day bleary eyed from a lousy night's sleep. Suggest staying away from the interior rooms unless they can AC will work!

Yelp
WAY TO NOISY for us. Stayed 2 nights, our window faced College Avenue, constant traffic noise till after midnight, starts again 5 Am. Next door neighbors having huge fight first night didn't help either! Hotel is beautiful, staff friendly and helpful. Loved everything about it, just to noisy to get a good night sleep. And I'm sorry, but I can't give a good rating if I don't get any sleep. Also, Continental Breakfast was so cheap and skimpy... totally not what you would expect from such a classy hotel. Seriously, better not to offer it all !!!

Yelp
Recent stay was a nightmare! After unpacking in the room we booked, was told the AC had been turned off that morning. Repacked and moved to annex room 9:30 that night. Two days later were told we would have to move from that room by 3pm. Couldn't return until 3:30 as we were on sightseeing train trip. Charged over $200. penalty for violating their rule. Front desk mgr. assigned fault for whole situation to us. If we had promised comfort feature of AC in the room we booked there would have been no problem.

Yelp
Great place to stay!! Stayed in a King Executive with a great view of downtown. The bed was so dang comfy, we slept great and I'm a light sleeper. Beautiful woodwork throughout, cool old elevator. Kinda wish it had a restaurant like the Strator but overall seemed more fun. Great Price too

Yelp
Dawson and Natasha at the front desk are truly awesome! They got us checked in and set last night. The hotel is fantastic - you should stay here even if the price is a little higher. Right is the middle of everything so it's perfect. True old style hotel from the late 1800's with all the modern conveniences.

Yelp
Wow this place was great for the money! We got a deal thru hotels.com and stayed in a king room with no window. The check in was easy and they even had chocolate chip cookies set out with a coffee bar. Nice touch. Our room was very clean and bed was comfortable with plenty of pillows. Came with robes in the closet and a CD player with soothing music to play. Good flat screen tv too. We got vouchers to eat at the Lone Spur Cafe next door and our breakfast was great! We got 2 eggs with hashbrowns and a biscuit with gravy and cup of coffee for free! Was totally worth the price to stay at this cool old hotel. Things are modern in the rooms and we will definitely be back! Great location right on Main Street too!

Yelp
Great hotel! The service was great and all the staff was delightful. Centrally located, the coolest (and oldest) elevator in Colorado, cookies in the afternoon, and yummy continental breakfast. Worth a stop!

Yelp
Beautiful old place with furniture and lighting straight out of a movie about wild West gamblers. Front desk staff very nice. We got the 3 bedroom family suite. It is comfortable and roomy but be advised there is no parlor, just the 3 bedrooms. The king room is the central room. Beds and pillows are comfy. The Palmer is central to all the touristy stuff so you can walk everywhere. Its beside the train station so you get the sound of the train horn in the day which adds more character.

Yelp
Great place to stay when in Durango. Cookies and Tea in the lobby when checking. Continental breakfast. Hugh balcony over looking the train, nice place for coffee and break in your day. Rooms are gorgeous, clean, quiet and comfortable bed. Starbucks across the street. Can walk to anything. Love it here I will stay again. This is my 2nd trip in 4 weeks both stays where perfect. Rates are reasonable for Historic Hotel.

Yelp
Great historic hotel. Natasha was at the front desk and Dawson was the bell boy/concierge. Both were extremely helpful and informative about the area. The hotel is magnificently restored and although it is over 100 years old it is not dated but it's furniture is authentic so you can see how it was back that many years. Are planning a trip back in 2017 and would definitely stay here as we were welcome and made to feel at home. Is also very convenient

Yelp
We stayed at the General Palmer Hotel for several nights in July and enjoyed the decor and attention to detail in keeping with the Old West theme. The staff was very polite, the room was large and nicely appointed as well as the bathroom which was bright and large with lots of shelf space. Unfortunately, the air conditioning was not working on a couple of days. We were told that they were having problems with it. It worked on and off and it appeared that the management was trying to conserve the usage. This was very disappointing because ti was very hot. The breakfast which was included with the room was pretty bad. Rubbery eggs, and very mediocre offerings.

Yelp
You hear everything from your room. If the people next door are talking you hear everything as if they're in your room!! Woke up several times all hours of the night due to people talking in the hall. Great location but price wasn't worth it.

Yelp
If ever I were going to write my memoirs this is the place I would do it. The General Palmer is a quaint and historic hotel. It has the most gorgeous lobby and both times I have stayed during the Christmas season, it is adorned with a beautiful Christmas tree. The staff is kind, courteous and professional. The furniture is antique but not stuffy or run down. The rooms are very clean and the bathrooms are beautiful and relaxing. They have a tea and coffee bar all day along with fresh cookies in the afternoon. There is a back parlor that faces the train tracks so it fun to watch the trains going back and forth. A hot Breakfast is also offered. You are close to a movie theater, plenty of eating and shopping options and the railroad. For the people complaining about noise, yes it can be a little noisy on the streets but this is not the fault of the hotel. Last night I was awoken by rowdy people around 2am leaving the local bars I assume and then later the snow plow. Kind of the things you'd expect when staying at any downtown hotel in the mountains. If you have sleep troubles maybe just wear some ear plugs because the beds are super comfortable too. As I opened with this is a relaxing hotel. It was full and yet we never saw many people in the lobby areas. It's a great place to escape the modern trappings of society. (But they do have flat screen TVs if you don't want to escape too much!)
