Colorado’s Overlooked San Luis Valley Offers Scenic Desert With Artistic Flair

"Corey Hubbard, who moved to Del Norte last year after she and her husband failed to find what they were looking for in Greece, Boulder, Santa Fe, or Northern California. They bought a 1913 stone building with vaulted windows and opened a store called the General (Specific) Store—which sells taxidermy, art books, midcentury furniture, and other vintage items."

Oh my how we love this store and the Awesome couple that own it! Corey and Ryan are such a fun, exciting and authentic WELCOMED addition to our sweet little town. The hard work they have done in such a short period of time is mind boggling. It’s easy to spend a few enjoyable hours perusing this store, visiting with these two and we always leave with some unique treasure❤️

This shop is fantastic. Corey has accumulated a really intriguing assortment of antiques, and she's managed to curate a vibe that is warm, welcoming, and very aesthetically pleasing. This is not your run-of-the mill antique shop. You owe it to yourself to pop by. I was having a surreal day traipsing around Del Norte with my kids while my mother-in-law was being worked up for a spine fracture at the local ER. It was Memorial Day weekend, and General Specific Store was pretty much the only thing open. Just for something to do, we wandered in, and my kids immediately started running around examining all the treasures. They were a bit loud and touched pretty much everything in the store. Rather than being annoyed, Corey and Sage were absolutely lovely. They gave us a curated tour of the shop, the courtyard, and the incredible apartments above the store. We weren't really there with the intention to purchase anything, but Corey was excited to share her world with us, anyway (with the patience of a saint). She and Sage turned a bummer of a day into a highlight. They and this store are rare gems.

Positive: the store is beautiful! It’s beautifully merchandised. The displays are eye catching and inviting. The owners absolutely have a talent for visual merchandising! This store is a great addition to Del Norte and a huge improvement over the dusty old antique graveyard that was in this space for decades prior. The negative: almost nothing in the store is priced. Save a few very high ticket items, almost nothing had price tags on it, making for an incredibly frustrating experience for me as a shopper. I shouldn’t be expected to guess, nor should I expect to have to ask the person behind the register the price of every single solitary item I might be interested in purchasing. There were many items I wanted to purchase but left behind simply because asking the price of every item or being subjected sticker shock when I took it up to the register was more trouble than the item was worth to me. The few items that I did decide to purchase, I was shocked at the price as I was quoted when I got to the register, but then I felt embarrassed to say that the price was over my budget (and more than the items are comparably priced—I am a fellow vintage seller so I have a good idea of market prices) and I purchased them anyway, but left with a bad taste in my mouth about the transaction. I actually overheard the older gentleman who was working in the store that day say to other customers that he didn’t know what the prices were, he just had to guess, so he always guessed high to avoid getting in trouble with the owner. That is not kind of thing a customer wants to hear!! I’d love to return to the store. Again, it’s beautifully put together with great merchandise and fantastic vintage clothing. But I’ll be there as a looker and not as a shopper if it continues to be a ‘guess-the-price’ experience.

We have never had such an amazing experience at an antique store. There were so many unique items that caught our interest, we were not able to look at everything before her shop closed for the day. Corey was willing to open her store after hours for us, and she even delivered the items in an enclosed trailer over 1,000 miles! That is the definition of customer service! We will be back!

Stunning new vintage store in Del Norte. Fantastic selection of curated goods and clothing. The owners Corey and Ryan are extremely friendly! We found a number of things we wanted and were able to put them aside to be shipped home, which was a tremendous convenience for us! Can't recommend highly enough!

This is the best find in Southern Colorado! Corey and Ryan are wonderful people and you can see how much they love their store and the area by visiting for just a few minutes. Corey hosted a candle making class for three of us and we had such a blast. Thank you Corey for a fun afternoon!!!! We will definitely stop again.
