General Staff Building

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I recently visited the General Staff Building (Главный штаб), and it was an unforgettable experience. The first thing that impressed me was the architecture — the building is grand, elegant, and full of historical significance. Even before entering, the exterior already gives a strong sense of how important this place is in the history and culture of Saint Petersburg. Inside, the space is beautifully designed and very well maintained. The exhibitions are thoughtfully curated, with a wide variety of artworks ranging from classical to modern art. Each section is clearly organized, making it easy to explore and understand the context of the displays. I especially appreciated how spacious the galleries are, allowing visitors to enjoy the artworks without feeling crowded. The atmosphere inside the museum is calm and inspiring, perfect for taking your time and fully immersing yourself in the art. There are plenty of benches and resting areas, which is great if you plan to spend several hours there. The lighting is excellent and really enhances the details of the artworks. The staff were polite, professional, and helpful whenever I had questions. Information signs are available in multiple languages, which is very convenient for international visitors. The museum is also easy to navigate, with clear directions and well-marked sections. Overall, visiting the General Staff Building was a highlight of my trip. It is a perfect place for anyone who loves art, architecture, and history. I would strongly recommend setting aside enough time to explore everything at a relaxed pace. This is truly a must-visit destination when coming to Saint Petersburg, and I would happily return again in the future.

As a traveler, I always appreciate seeing different cultures and historical places. Palace Square in Saint Petersburg is beautiful from an architectural point of view — the design and size are incredible. It’s always interesting to experience the world and understand history through your own eyes.

Huge museum with monumental contemporary interiors that maintain the source architectural features. You can simply walk around and enjoy the designs, but there are also a big collection of paintings by Van Gogh, Monet, Picasso and other dudes, as well as other pieces if art and temporary exhibitions. Cafe and lecture hall are also available.

The arch of the General Staff and the new wing are simply wonderful The Hermitage is a real pearl. it is worth going here definitely and more than once! I went 3 times for last year and I want more! getting into the new wing you pay for the entrance to one part of the Hermitage. but you don’t have enough time of the day to go through it. museum is very huge and amazing

If you love Impressionism Art, this is definitely the MOST AMAZING place you could find! Wow, i never saw such as large collection, with so many varieties. This is just outstanding and blew my mind. This aside, the building new modern architecture is just wonderful! Do yourself a big favor, come inside to get lost and appreciate art in all his forms and feelings.

Must visit museum in Saint Petersburg. Plan Hermitage one day and this for another day. Both single day is too much to digest. Take time and enjoy each sections. Worth your time spent. No advance booking required. Ticket was 500 roubles.

Now part of the extensive Heritage Museum Complex ( use same entry ticket), was created by Carlo Rossi in 1820-30s. There are three levels with many exhibitions on each, ranging from African Art to the works of many great artists ( Picasso, van Gogh, and French Impressionist and Post-Impressionists). Its a good opportunity to see such great works in an uncrowded setting, close up. The only "frustration" was the glass in the frames protecting the art, as it gives reflections of the lights. Downstairs is a bookshop and cafe.

The modern art collection of the Hermitage is located in the General Staff Building. The entrance is on the left side facing away from the Winter Palace. One of the greatest collection of the modern art of late 1800‘s to early 1900‘s. No long lines unlike the Winter Palace. You can actually buy tickets to Winter Palace at this Location as well, which is not well known.
