24 Best Hotels in Dublin

"Smithfield is one of the coolest areas in Dublin city, and the square in the middle of the village has undergone a complete transformation in recent years. There’s a reason Generator chose this location for its base in the Irish capital—it matches the hip aesthetic of the luxury hostel brand perfectly. Situated beside the Jameson Distillery (and its striking red-brick tower), the hostel has a hugely social bar that spans the breadth of the building, with whiskey-bottle chandeliers and giant murals. Young and fun, with a party-like atmosphere, this hostel offers remarkable quality and stylishness for the price." - Nicola Brady

Generator Dublin

"How did it strike you on arrival?Smithfield is one of the coolest areas in Dublin city, and the square in the middle of the village has undergone a complete transformation in recent years. There’s a reason Generator chose this location for its base in the Irish capital—it matches the hip aesthetic of the luxury hostel brand perfectly. Set beside the Jameson Distillery (and its striking red-brick tower), the hostel has a lively bar that spans the breadth of the building, with whiskey bottle chandeliers and giant murals. Nice. What’s the crowd like?Young but discerning guests who want a bargain but don’t want to cram into bedraggled dorm rooms. The sociable crowd will likely be heading out to experience Dublin’s nightlife to the max. Noted. The good stuff: Tell us about your room.Private rooms are spotless, pared-back, bright, and airy, with lots of bright whites and natural wood. The large suite is outfitted with plenty of beds and a hot tub, so it's usually taken by groups—hello, bachelorette parties. Best of all, you can always rely on modern-day hostels to remember critical creature comforts like bedside lighting and outlets. Any other amenities of note?If you book directly with Generator, you’ll get a wristband that grants discounts to local attractions, including the Jameson Distillery. The independent Lighthouse cinema, just across the square, is also worth a visit. Room service and food: Worth it?This is a hostel, so you’ll need to head out for a proper meal. Luckily, there are plenty of restaurants around Smithfield Square. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whatever stuck with you.Just that bar—it's always kicking. Bottom line: worth it, and why?Young and fun, with a party-like atmosphere, this hostel offers remarkable quality and stylishness for the price." - Nicola Brady

The hostel is not located in the city center, but it’s accessible within 10–15 minutes either by walking or taking the tram. That part was convenient enough. The bar food was okay, but the staff were completely indifferent—not friendly, not rude, just completely uninterested. The music in the common areas was so loud that it was impossible to get any personal tasks done or even have a quiet moment. Shared bathrooms and toilets were clean, which I appreciated. However, the en-suite bathroom in the room was poorly ventilated and honestly quite awful. From the hallway, there was already a damp, musty smell, and unfortunately, the same smell was in the room. I had booked three nights but ended up checking out after two because I just couldn’t stand it anymore. The staff at the front desk didn’t smile once. It was my first time in Dublin experiencing such robotic service. If it’s going to be that mechanical, they might as well just install a self check-in kiosk. The only good thing I can say is that there are a few decent cafés and supermarkets nearby. But overall, for the price I paid, I really don’t understand how this place has such high ratings.

We stayed one night with family of 5 in a private room of 6. The value for a family is great. The price and location is really good. It was pretty clean. The only downside really was that is was pretty noisy in the hallways from 11pm to 3am that night (a monday night). But I don't if that reflects a typical night in the hostel or if that was exceptional.

Google
Overall a great place to stay at a budget. May get a little noisy on the weekends but also gives an opportunity to enjoy the night life at the bar. It was quite an experience for it was my first time ever renting a shared accommodation. From affordable locker rentals, towel rental and probably more. everything was unique in its way. Rooms were also clean and felt like it was safe. Everyone had their own locker under the bed.

Google
The bedrooms were clean and of good quality – that’s really the only positive thing we can say about our stay.||Unfortunately, the rest was quite disappointing. Several toilets couldn’t be used because the seats were loose and the door locks didn’t work properly. The showers were very dirty, and even the taps weren’t securely fixed.||The food was also poor: the black and white pudding were rock hard, the egg was burnt, the sausages were dry, and the bacon was limp and greasy.||The bar and common areas looked nothing like the pictures on booking.com – everything felt quite run-down and outdated.||Overall, the place didn’t live up to the expectations set online.

Google
Great Hostel that offers the complete package , from the fully stocked bar, pool tables and the around the clock reception. I can't recommend this place highly enough, I'd definitely recommend if you're travelling in a group to book a bigger room together as the shared communal toilet/ showers were a bit grim (to be expected) Cracking location with around a 20 minute walk to temple bar and other locations.

Google
The rooms are soooo hot and stuffy. It was between 14 - 20 Celsius outside, but thanks to our portable indoor thermometer we could see that in the room it was always between 23 - 28 Celsius, even at night. There is almost no sunlight and also no curtajns, so it's not like we forgot to pull the curtains to block the heat. There is no fresh air. It's super stuffy and hot. ||The pillows are 4 cm thick. The linens are super rough and noisy. No laundry facilities and because of the stuffiness I don't think anyone would have success hand washing and drying clothes during their visit.||Do not recommend. Cool pictures on the listing but - You know when companies post pictures of employees playing ping pong to show it's a great place to work? But meanwhile they have a low quality of life? That's what Generator Dublin is.

sianh683

Google
Cheap and cheerful. Very basic but done the job for staying overnight in Dublin, quite a central location and everything we needed was within walking distance. ||Neighbours were rowdy at 2am which woke me and my friend up which was a bit annoying. They had a bar and lots of games/activities to use downstairs. ||We made use of the bag storage facility too which was really easy to use and good value.

Google
Nice for a hostel, terrible for a hotel. I booked it because I’d stayed at the Generator in Washington DC and had a great experience (in a hotel room, not the hostel part). This room has all the class of a Motel 6, and we paid crazy money for it. My husband actually considered eating the money and looking for a different hotel, but we’ll tough it out because we’re only here for one night. Look at this bathroom. This is what €175 gets you. Edit: this hotel LOCKS YOU OUT OF YOUR ROOM at checkout time. Stars adjusted, my god!

Yelp
This isn't the Ritz. It's a bed and a shower. If you're just needing a place to store stuff and crash out, it does the trick. Staff are nice. The downstairs is much nicer than upstairs. But, you get what you pay for.

Yelp
I stayed here recently for 2 nights with my tour group. Overall, this hostel has a really cool vibe with a bar on the bottom floor where they are always playing soccer (football) games. They also have games available to play. Their receptionists were always nice and helpful and I just liked the community spaces available. They have a locked room as well to store your luggage if you don't have a room yet. Breakfast is served on the bottom floor also. The buffet breakfast was not it. Very minimal options and kind of depressing of what actually was available. The elevators were pretty sketchy. One of them always seemed to work fine but the other one we could never get to go up from the lobby. They didn't allow you to take the stairs to go up which I thought was weird. We were staying on floor 2 so it was annoying to have to wait for a working elevator every time. The beds in the room were fine. Typical hostel bed and they provided us with a pillow, blanket, and towel. The shower in the bathroom in the room was fine but the toilet didn't flush so we always had to go to the community bathroom down the hall. Not the end of the world but just frustrating at times. Best part about this place was the location. There were a couple restaurants and coffee shops nearby as well as convenience stores like a Tesco express around the corner. The Jameson distillery is literally right around the corner and you can get a discount for the Jameson tasting tour if you tell them you are staying at the Generator. It was also very close to temple bar!

Yelp
Paid about $54 for a bunk here and ended up with mysterious bites all over my body . While the people who work the desk were nice enough the facilities are also a bit run down . There was chipped paint , dirty floors and even black mold around the toilet handle in my en suite bathroom . Overall one of my worst and most expensive stays at a hostel . Shocking as Generator hostels in other European cities ( like Stockholm and Amsterdam ) are usually pretty great in terms of cleanliness and the upkeep of their facilities. I'd recommend booking elsewhere.

Yelp
Don't get me wrong I had a good time but there are many better options. First off the staff is very helpful till about 10pm then they don't want to interact with you and are almost rude. Secondly the room was definitely more expensive than other hostels in the area. The food there was excellent and cheap but the drinks were very over priced. Additionally, you could not bring in any outside food at all. It was a decent day, but I will definitely not be returning.

Yelp
I'd like to start this out by saying I am usually not one to complain or leave reviews but I absolutely do not recommend staying at the Generator Dublin and will never stay at any Generator location again after my experience, and though this review may be long I think it is worth a read and will hopefully make you reconsider staying here. I booked 3 beds in a 4 bed all female room for 2 nights for myself and two friends. The first thing we did after checking in (where we spoke to 2 people at the front desk) was purchase 3 towels and 3 lockers (for a total of €28). The first Night we woke up in the middle of the night to a drunk Man stumbling into our room despite us booking an all female room. He fell asleep and all was fine, but we did nicely ask the front desk about it the following morning as we were confused why a Man was placed in our room. They told us that we were somehow marked as "no shows" in their system even though we had checked in online as well as in person, we were told that he was only there for the one night so they were not going to do anything about it as he only had a few hours until his checkout. We confirmed with the front desk that we were now officially checked into their system and went on our way to enjoy our day in Dublin. When we returned to our room we were shocked to see that all 3 of our locked lockers were now unlocked and had keys in them (we brought our keys with us and left our lockers locked- so these were completely new locks and ours had clearly been cut off). Upon opening the lockers all of our belongings had been rifled through and thrown into plastic garbage bags- someone had gone through absolutely everything we brought down to my dirty underwear bag which felt incredibly violating. A member of our group went down to go ask what happened and retrieve new towels as the towels we paid for were gone. She was told that we still showed up in their system as "no shows" despite the fact that we had now checked in 2 times (3 if counting checking in online prior to arriving). They said that because we were marked as "no shows" the cleaners had taken all of our stuff and put it in the bags (which were placed inside the unlocked lockers) to throw away because they didn't know who our stuff belonged to (Not sure how that explains someone going through my underwear bag and removing /rearranging everything from every pocket of my bag-then placing it back into the locker) The people at the desk were dismissive at first and offered us "free" towels and said that we got "free" locks out of the ordeal (though we had paid €28 the day before for these things- so they weren't free they were just replacing what they had taken). We then had to cancel our plans for our last night in Dublin to go through all of our belongings and make sure that nothing important was taken. After we confirmed that we were not missing anything else all of us went down to the front desk again where we were able to speak to the 2 people who had "checked us in" the first time, they were kinder as they had remembered us from the night before (and were the people who should've checked us into the system in the first place) and let us know that they would see what they could do as far as compensating us- and after about an hour we did receive an email that we received 50% off of our stay, which we were thankful for- but given our experience we felt that it was the very least they could do. (The email also didn't include any apologies or any context at all, just a receipt for -€222) The most upsetting part of this whole ordeal is that the Woman who stayed in the 4th bed in our room the second night told us that she had had a very similar experience- Which leads me to believe that this sort of thing happens here often and was not just a random singular accident. When I checked out I was given a card with a link to review my experience and told that if I rate it 4 stars or higher I would receive something like 20% all future stays at any Generator location (this offer wasn't exclusive to us either and is offered to all guests- so take all reviews with a grain of salt because people have been bribed to write good reviews- we were even asked to write good things about specific employees) We were not expecting anything fancy out of our stay at the Generator but at the bare minimum we did expect to feel safe and feel that our belongings were secure, which unfortunately was not the case. I'd also like to include that the bathroom ceilings appeared to be covered in Black Mold, and that both the sink and shower drains were clogged and after about 1 min into a shower you were standing in a puddle of nasty water. For your own safety and state of mind please don't stay here- especially considering that aside from all of the trouble we went through this is still not a cheap hostel.

Yelp
My company came here for an off-site last year so not only did we stay here, we took advantage of the entire facility for a couple of days. They have an awesome mural in the dining area and had several floors for 300 + people to utilize. The breakfast buffet consist of Irish breakfast and some additional continental options and it was superb. Overall the place had a really interesting live and felt pretty homie. It was about a 15-20 walk from the city center where all of the action was so it was close enough but also far away enough from all the craziness in sounds at night. There were also a couple shops in the area which was nice in case you wanted to eat elsewhere. My biggest gripe was that I personally didn't like staying at hostels, which doesn't really have anything to do with this place as it was a decision for the entire company to stay here. I personally like having my own space and the experience of sharing it with others was quite interesting. Luckily this hostile would be what I consider to be a fancier also because all the rooms had their own towels and their own bathrooms... Which I'm not sure is common or not but it's always nice to have your own bathroom as compared to point to a public shared bathroom. The other issue I did have and again I'm not sure if this is something common, the lack of AC during the summer. The rooms basically become the heat box and is unbearable to sleep in. Luckily we were able to ask for a fan and got the last one for a room. Do to some logistics we were house in a room on the fourth floor on the first day and then relocated to our permanent stay for the rest of our trip which was the ground floor. However it was right next to an outdoor seating area and you can't stop people from going there to chat at night because it's obviously a public area. So when you combine a chatty group of people plus an open window due to the heat and someone who's an extremely light sleeper... It all becomes a an unpleasant situation. As I've said I personally don't like staying at hostels but for what my company has selected this place was quite alright. Any time spent outside the rooms was quite pleasant overall.

Yelp
***This is a review of the food. Not the hostel's accommodation.*** If I had reviewed this place a month ago it would probably have been a 5. I have been here a couple of times since and have been underwhelmed to say the least. Inconsistency is my biggest pet hate. My first couple of burgers from Generator were fuc*ing amazing. The last couple of burgers and chips were mediocre in comparison. What let me down the last couple of visits were the bun on the burger [not sure if it was freshness or a different bun but it was not as good], the meat itself was not as incredible [still pretty good mind you but not to the standard I was used to which would have made me choose Generator over Bunsen for my burger fix]. My biggest annoyance? The chips/fries. The last visit this past weekend the poxy chips were frozen, not fresh. Nope. Nope. Nope. I can appreciate that you can run out of one thing or the other during busy periods but hey you know what you do? Tell people that you have run out of fresh chips. Another point to make was the state of their pizzas. The boyfriend was with me and ordered a pizza and this thing was far too thin and tasted like overcooked melba toast with cheese on top. Management, please take note. I like this place. I like the vibe and the staff are great [except for the very very grumpy person who was making my burger at the weekend, he needed a hug or a ride or something.] So I would like to return and I would like this experience to resemble my first couple of visits.

Yelp
Not sure why, the first time i stayed in generator hostel in spain, i was told to wait till 2pm to check in because the room wasn't ready, but i saw others behind me get checked in. I realised that people who were not able to check in were Asian. Then two girls (latino and black) were going to the SAME room they assigned me (but did not give me the key card), made friends (we ended up being really good friends!) and they let me in. Apart from the horrible staff when checking in I had a fun time with new friends. Didn't think I would have the same experience again but I'm at the generator hostel in Dublin waiting and watching every other white guest check in. What's going on? Should be fine if you're white. Asians might want to skip this hostel.

Yelp
Clean and secure with good service during the day... the security is outstanding. Bring cash if you come in late. I came in at 2am and was told he only takes cash at night. Be prepared to pay €2 to rent a towel €6.50 to buy a lock for a footlocker and €3/6hrs for an electronic locker approximaty the same size. If you have regular size luggage be prepared to rent a private room. I chose this place for security. In that way they are outstanding in both service and location.

Yelp
My first hostel experience. My friend and I shared a room with about 8 girls, everyone was friendly, clean, and respectful. The bathroom was in tip top shape. They have a fun bar area to hang out in and live music at night. The security is excellent, have your room key in arm's reach when you get back at night.

Yelp
I stayed at the Generator in June with my mom and cousin. Normally I stay at hostels alone, but since we needed a cheap place to stay for one night in Dublin, the Generator was perfect. We got a private room instead of a bunk room, by the way. In cleanliness, it's much cleaner than your standard hostel, but less clean than the Wombat in London (however, the Wombat has won lots of awards for being clean). Rooms are pretty quiet, but there's a bar right downstairs, so make sure to request a room away from the bar if you're sensitive to noise. The location is pretty good, right off a Luas (rail) stop and relatively close to Temple Bar, about a 20 minute walk or a 5-10 minute Luas ride. The Generator is next to the Jameson Distillery and relatively close to the Guinness Brewery too. The best part of the hostel for me, though, was the cafe downstairs. They didn't have free breakfast, but the cafe is kind of fancy and I really needed some yogurt and granola after a long flight. They also have outlets and individual lights at each bed, which I love, and I hope it becomes the norm for every hostel. Wifi too. If you need to leave your luggage there after you leave, the lockers are coin operated and in the basement. I wouldn't stay here as a solo traveler because it's kind of expensive and far from Temple Bar and the main bus/train station, but for a family or couple looking for an inexpensive private room, it was perfect. Very safe, good neighborhood.

Yelp
Eh hang on just a second there. So you're telling me that the best burger in Dublin has been within a five minute walk from my gaff all this time, and it's taken me til NOW to realise it?!! I've always stuck to saying that Bunsen is the best and unbeatable. But hellooooo new winner. The burger in the Generator is made of top notch meat, like you'd make at home. It's juicy, tender, and eh.. meaty. Then they have a gorgeous soft bun on the outside, encasing a kind of relish made of chopped up red onion, gerkins, tomato etc, with a load of cheddar on top melted be jaysus into it. It's all just so flavoursome and moreish. It comes with handcut chips (with the skins still on bits of it - yum), in a box for 8 eurits. Such good value too. I shall be back. Many many times over!

Yelp
Yes, I'm reviewing a hostel in the neighbourhood I live in. Why? Because it's so much more than just dorm rooms and bunk beds for budget travellers! The Generator Hostel is a bar for late night drinks, a café for great value coffees and food and, most importantly, a space for many community events. They support and host many local events in Smithfield, including weekend markets where local vendors set up tables of wares. While I can't speak to the quality of accommodation here, I have stopped for a bite and a pint at their café/bar, and it's a great little spot. The roof above the café is made entirely of glass, so there's plenty of natural light. For lunch, they have about 5-6 meal options, all for around €6. I tried the chicken wrap and my partner had the pulled pork sandwich. Both dishes were very nice, come with side salads and were an excellent value. The crowd there wasn't just hostel guests either. There were people who work in the area on their lunch break, a few tourists, a few people meeting for coffee... a fairly eclectic mix. At the bar, they have O'Haras and 8 Degrees on tap for €5.50/pint - which I'll happily pay for a decent microbrew. Even if you're not staying at the hostel, it's worth popping your head in to see if there's anything going on!

Yelp
Erm, what? The best burger I've ever eaten came from a Generator Hostel? I have some questions. 1) Why did the Berlin Generator not have this amazing option. And cool vibe. And salsa lessons. Etc. 2) How the f do you make a burger that amazing. It's genuinely confusing me, because this was honestly a perfect marriage of great beef, just the right amount of burger sauce, a few pickles, cheese, and gorgeous brioche buns. I almost finished a double. 3) Please can you open up shop next to my flat in Leeds so I can do nothing but eat burgers. 4) No, really, right next to my flat k. 5) Would it be weird to stay there just for more burger. I think you get the idea. Might have been a bit superlative here, but I really did love that meal.

Yelp
First time ever in a hostel, stayed with 6 friends of mine in a private room, so I guess it wasn't really a "hostel" experience. This has solid reviews on hostelworld, its fairly clean, decent location, good bar, and pretty lively throughout the day. A few things that did bother me was first and foremost the temperature. I don't know if all of Ireland does not believe in Air Condition, but this place does get pretty humid and muggy. We cracked the window open at night and pretty much sweated ourselves to sleep. The linen are in a cabinet under the bed, and did not seem clean. And toilet had a pretty weak flush! Overall decent hostel but I would not know any better.

Yelp
Located in the up and coming Smithfield neighborhood Dublin, I selected the Generator Hostel because of its great reviews and reasonable pricing. This was my first time staying in a hostel and I expected and overall no-frills experience. However, I was still left disappointed even with low expectations. The Generator has a very club-like feel with spacious bars, neon lighting, and trendy fixtures. The lobby and ground floor is the best feature of the Generator with a breakfast cafe, bar, internet computers, pool tables, and vending areas. As told by the staff, the Generator property is less than one year old. However the property feels much older and unkempt. There are floorboards loose throughout the property and the fixtures are worn. The guests room are where the property really shows wear. The location is was also a sticking point for me. On the positive side, it is close to the Luas tram stop, the Jameson Distillery, and some restaurants in Smithfield Square. However as far as most City Centre attractions, shops, and restaurants, it is about a 1.5 km walk to nearly everything. We stayed in a private room with an en suite bath. It was a room with two bunk beds to sleep four guests but we had it for just the two of us. The bunk beds were surprisingly comfortable with cozy linens and individual lighting for each cove. Other than the cozy beds, there were few positive notes about the guest rooms. The bathroom was by far the worst feature of the Generator. There was ZERO counter space to place any items down. The towels had to be retrieved from the front desk, even in the private rooms. No wash cloths were provided. there was also only two hooks to hang towels in the very bare bathroom. The shower was tiny and the tile was filthy. There was visible mold up the walls of the shower tiles. The floor of the shower was stainless steel which felt cold and dirty. The shower faucet was fussy and water pressure was weak. The water temperature was unpredictable and generally cold. I understand that this is a hostel but there was no place to set down items, not even a cabinet and certainly no closet to hang your clothes up. The staff at the Generator was somewhat friendly although guests are basically treated as numbers, not guests. You have to request just about every amenity from the front desk which let long waits at the counter. The staff essentially did the minimum job possible and was barely helpful most of the time. The did have laundry units available for guest use although it was very steep at 7 Euros per use. The daily breakfast was much more reasonable at 4 Euros. Overall, I wouldn't recommend staying at the Generator Hostel. Unless you favor a very-budget, no frills experience, the Generator Hostel is mostly a hassle. Our stay was not very comfortable and the location is inconvenient to most City Centre attractions.

Yelp
Great , affordable Hostel in a central location- my son and I got our own room with a private bath and small balcony overlooking the square. I'll stay there again next time!!

Yelp
Friendly staff, fun atmosphere, fun people. Outrageously loud by design and people come here to party so just keep that in mind when booking this hostel if you are looking to sleep well every night. The noise level is totally doable and security on site will shut down obnoxious buffoons if they get to cray cray. My main complaint about this place is the temperature in the rooms. It was so hot every night, super stuffy, and we had a tiny window for ventilation. I woke up sweating through my sheets every night! Location is prime at this spot though, next to Jameson, a fresh food market so you don't need to eat out, public transport, touristy areas / Temple Bar within 15 minutes walking distance and even a cat lounge which I was super fond of!

Yelp
This is a review for their food & drink - I've never stayed in the hostel. The bar in this place is great, with drinks offers on every day! I'm a big fan of the Poitín cocktail they may which is delicious & unusual in equal measure. The star of the show is the burger - believe the hype. The burger in this place is THE best burger in Dublin - or certainly of anywhere that I've visited. Which includes most of the big name burger bars in the city! Give it a go - they'll dress it for you too so you won't need any condements, just trust them.. Just do!! It looks gross, it's not very appealing to look at & it's made in a kitchen beside the reception of the hostel - not exactly the standard of say a high end restaurant, however I believe that flavour makes up for everything. I enjoyed it so much that I mused over my last bite for a number of minutes before I caved & eventually had to eat it...,

Yelp
So this review has nothing to do with staying here. I'm a local, so this is purely about the food and bar. First, food. Whopper. Get that burger in your face! Menu is mostly typical bar food, all cooked well and served cheap and easy. Bar, an eclectic space that has an odd spread of tables and seating but I like it. Can be a bit dark at times. There is a quiz every other Wednesday which is excellent. Huge selection of drinks too and v knowledgable staff!

Yelp
I feel that it is unethical to not give refunds for the coronavirus. I told management that I wasn't feeling well and they essentially said "come on down anyway because your reservation is non-refundable." I wouldn't put others at risk in this way but I am certain that the hostel would have allowed a sick person to enter and possibly infect the other guests. This was a cheap and dangerous play on the part of the company.

Yelp
No let downs with this burger called beefeater!! So freaking good!! Also stayed at this hostel for a few days being in a larger room with 6people is still very comfortable and clean overall. I would definitely recommend coming back here also the WiFi is a bit annoying it will work for few hours off and on but then that it's a good hostel.

Yelp
This is a review of the accommodations at Generator Dublin. On a recent 2.5 week trek across Europe, the Dublin Generator was both our first and last stop. To be fair, this was my first stay at a European hostel, so I had no idea what I was in for. The company in our room left much to be desired. Frequently stumbling in at 3-4 in the morning, there was a lot of yelling and one instance of a full beer being spilled all over our suitcases. This is not Generator's fault, and I did not include this when considering the rating. The Good: - The Burgers. Oh man, I can not talk up the burgers enough. Hands down this was the best thing I ate in weeks. Great meat and cooked perfectly, I could not have asked for better. - The Location. Generator is located in Smithfield Square, right next to the Jameson Distillery and just a few minutes walk from Temple Bar. - The Price. On weeknights, the price was amazing, making the trip affordable. The Bad: - Volume. On the one hand, you know what you're getting when choosing to stay in a hostel. On the other, I did not expect it to sound like I was sleeping in the middle of the bar. Our room overlooking the courtyard was so loud from the bar's music that not even ear plugs could help. Due to the heat and lack of air conditioning it was too hot to close the windows for any period of time. - Air Conditioning. It doesn't exist. Apparently this is a cultural difference, but I wish I had known prior to the stay in order to pack appropriately. - Activities. The day that we arrived there was a vintage market set up in all of the common spaces. This would have been cool if there had still been spots available to relax. Since we were unable to check in to our room we were essentially left without anywhere to go or sit for several hours.

Yelp
Pretty much like a hotel but cheaper. This was my first solo traveling and hostel experience. The staff was great. Facilities were clean and the lockers made me feel really safe leaving my stuff. It is right next to the Jameson Distillery and the hop on hop off bus stop which made it convenient for me to see all the things I wanted to during my short time in Dublin. The bar area was nice and made it really easy to meet other people. Highly suggested if you're traveling to Dublin. No complaints at all!

Yelp
After several recommendations from friends and fellow Yelpers I finally made the 2 minute trek across the road to the Generator to try their burger. There were 5 or 6 different options and I went for the Retro Burger; beef, pickles, cheese, plus fries and a sauce (I chose jalapeno mayo on recommendation of the chef) for a tenner. While I was waiting, I chatted to the extremely friendly guy who works in the café part of the hostel so it felt like it took no time at all before the burger was ready. Everything was wrapped up nicely and put into a take-out box. Back home, I made myself comfortable, laid out a whole bunch of napkins around me and unwrapped, which turned out to be, one hell of a burger! Oh my, this was seriously good. And quite big as well. The meat was good quality and cooked really really nicely so it was juicy and full of flavour. Only thinking about it now makes me want to go and get another one tonight.

Yelp
Excellent hostel to stay at. Was here for a week in Dublin and almost felt like a hotel for the duration. Underbed lockers are a plus, (they sell a padlock that fits it for €6.50 if yours is too small.) and the security is excellent. Only bad experience is the laundry. Do NOT plan on using their washing machines if you can at all avoid it, and if you do block out a good chunk of time! I spent 6 hours trying to wash and dry three pairs of clothes, and ruined the next morning for myself because I didn't plan that in and ended up even more sleep deprived than I began.

Yelp
This review is for the food and the pub. Burgers and chips were DELICIOUS. The pub was perfect for kicking back in and relaxing over a few drinks. They have a fun quiz night on Wednesday nights, with everyone welcome to join in. Great selection of beers on tap and bottled Irish microbrews (stouts, porters, etc.). Live music, at least some nights. Not touristy at all, even though the people hanging out in the pub are a terrific mix of Irish and visitors to Dublin from all over the world. Highly recommend!!

Yelp
I came here yesterday armed with a belly full of hunger and the anticipation of eating THE burger. There were two guys working in the kitchen, doing both the cooking and taking orders. It looked more than a bit stressful! The resulting burger was dry and pretty tasteless. A tenner for a very below average burger and okish fries. Generator why do you disappoint me so? Also, looks like they need to update the menu on their website. It says they do burger and a beer deal for €10 - which would have sweetened the deal a bit. Instead I paid €5.50 for a pint of the black stuff, AH heyor!

Yelp
Was only at this place for a burger and beer - not the hostel itself - but wow, what an experience it turned out to be! Two of us were out looking for a burger, a beer, and somewhere to study out of the house - and on the recommendation of many a Yelper and a few friends, (also because it was approximately 100m from us) went to Generator. We ended up getting all of the above plus participating in a pub quiz which told me I know far more odd animal facts than is entirely healthy (did you know that the fish used to make a Kipper is a herring? Apparently I did) and that while opposites do attract and couples often make up for each others' weaknesses, neither of us knows a thing about music since the early 2000's... but if we're ever planning a trip, he should definitely be the one in charge as evidenced by the Geography round! Back to the point - It already looks cool from the outside and as soon as you walk in it only gets cooler. By the check-in desk is where you order food. Order food. Order the burgers. All of them. Also the sweet potato fries. You can thank me later... The bar is pretty basic, no real frills but it'll definitely get the job done and decent selection of beers on draft. It's sort of a multilevel experience in there, prepare for stairs down from the entrance to the bar and then more down to an area with more dedicated tables and chairs, but there is lounging area on both the entry level and the bar level. They also do whiskey tastings 7 days a week - and the old Jameson distillery is right next door if you just can't get enough! Anyway the food was excellent, the pub quiz was a lot of fun (definitely lots of people "augmenting" knowledge with their phones though so be prepared), and I'll definitely be back at some point!

Yelp
I've not spent any night in this generator hostel but I've been in the Berlin and London one and they are really cool. But in this one in Dublin I've spent many in the pub they have downstairs, here you cans find one of the best burgers in town (I know I say that a lot) but it is true, you can ask anyone who's been there, also I tried the chicken wings which are really good and a must taste in this zone of the city. On Sunday the have a little market with clothes, vinyls and fancy food.

Yelp
I had a burger here for the first time!! Amazing!!! Very casual feel because of the hostel but sounded like there was a band tuning up so I would suspect a good night was had by all. Great stop off for us before heading to the Lighthouse cinema for a movie

Yelp
Generator Hostel is a company that has several hostels located around Europe. They are apparently known (and uphold true to it) for clean environment, high sense of security and low prices. Miss Sarit and I stayed here in lieu of the hotel and spa in Limerick, Ireland (why would our travel agent place us there?? Fired.) So we lost money on that room but the beds here were only 9 Euro each! You get a keycard to enter the building where a security guard is posted, and the security card is unique to your own room. The beds all have a locker underneath that is actually very nice. I've stayed in hostels before that were made of cheap plywood and hinges. This was steel with obscured safety glass, air compression, smooth rollers and so quiet it wont wake anyone up if you're getting in late / leaving early. The lobby area is complete with a bar, cafe and restaurant, with really hip tables made from tree stumps, music, cool lighting and great atmosphere (also, free WiFi!) Admittedly, the WiFi is terrible in the dorms, but whatev. The staff is also friendly and will give you a map, hand-marking places of interest such as the Jameson Factory that's across the street, the Guinness Factory that is a five minute walk away, and the main downtown area (Temple Bar) that is less than a ten minute walk away. Simply incredible.

Yelp
After trying unsuccessfully to get a table in Fish Shop on Friday after the cinema, we decided to give the burger in The Generator a go after hearing great things here. Thankfully it did not disappoint! A thick, juicy, meaty burger, ensconced in a light, chewy brioche bun, oozing cheese - I mean, what's not to love?!? Throw in the fact that it comes with a nice portion of triple cooked chips and the whole thing comes in at less than a tenner and you're pretty much onto a winner. My one qualm was that it was really hard to place an order despite standing at the cash-register for almost ten minutes and there being staff in the kitchen, but they seemed almost intent on ignoring us! Eventually, we had to ask someone at the check-in desk to take our order- a bit frustrating really! Also it was pretty loud and raucous - but hey, it's a youth hostel on a Friday night so that's to be expected and for the food they serve at the price they do, I'm not going to complain too much. Would definitely eat here again, the falafel sandwich sounded amazing so that's on my list for next time!

Yelp
Great hostel in a great location of all of Dublin. You can simply walk to most of the must dos like temple bar cobblestone pub and the city center of Dublin. The hostel was spacious and decent room for you to put your suitcases. There was however no areas to hang your coats. The staff isn't very nice or accommodating. The beds aren't that comfortable either. Had a difficult time sleeping through the night. There is no control over the AC and it was brutally hot. I woke up miserable in the night sweating every night. And there WiFi is awful. It kicks you off all the time and it barely works while using it. Not a bad hostel, pretty clean, sheets clean as well as the towels they provide. The breakfast is limited but decent to get a day started. I would stay away from the kitchen for lunch or dinner overpriced and not worth the money.

Yelp
We stayed here on our first night in Dublin. It was really nice and clean with very reasonable prices. We came at around 7:30 AM so we couldn't check in quite yet, but there was a luggage storage area where we could lock up our belongings. The hostel also has a lot of amenities like a dining area, bar, pool tables, entertainment center, free wifi, etc. We had a group of five so we rented out a whole 6 person ensuite which still only came out to only about $30pp. Sheets and comforter were very clean which is my number one thing but the room was really small. It was 3 bunk beds in the room. Didn't really mind though since we weren't doing anything except sleeping in the room. The area is not super central, but Dublin is pretty much completely walkable. Generator is right next to the Jameson Distillery and about a 15 minute walk to some of the more popular areas such as Temple Bar, Trinity College, etc. At 10:30 AM there's also a free walking tour that you can take. We got bored though and only made it through half an hour of the tour b/c our tour guide kept babbling on about some irrelevant story. We felt bad but we ran away and decided to just see all the places they were planning to go on our own. Our guide was really cool but he prob could have talked a little less... I'd definitely recommend staying here if you plan on stopping by Dublin any time soon!

Yelp
This hostel will make you question why hotels exist. You can have your own room for 40 euro a night and the price just keeps dropping after that. I think a bed in a dorm will set you back about 8 and you can add on a fairly robust breakfast for another 4. Staff are friendly and efficient while the many common areas offer up TV's, pool tables, couches, food and a very reasonably priced bar. The whole thing is very clean and really well finished. The location is good too. It's got a Dublin bike depot, a luas stop and lots of other amenities right outside. It's also about a 15 min walk from the city centre.

Yelp
I will have to let you know what happened that night at The Generator... Colourful you say? Indeed. Minus 1* For security The place was packed on Saturday night at the bar area... with 20 year olds. Not that I mind. Cause I totally don't. And I'm still in my twenties, so all good. Let's put it that way, they may have been in their early twenties while I am, like, on the other side of the spectrum. The way you behave at 20 should not be seen sober ! There was this girl, she was all slim and pretty... Yes, pretty drunk. And she had the tiniest skirt I have ever seen. Anyway, she kept on falling and bumping into people. Her friends kept her on her toes and her skirt on her bum. At some point she started walking backwards and nearly fell of stairs !?! Where was security? Nowhere to be found... Plus 1* For the price of the drinks A younger crowd calls for lower prices. Because that's a fact, young people who come to a hostel are probably still students. Maybe I should fake a student card, no that I ever did it. Seriously. Never. To quote a famous philosopher called Justinus Bieberus 'Never say never' ! *Joke* :D Plus 1* For the pool table So there I was with a friend, having a cheap enough drink and being entertained by the youngest in full possession of their craziness. As we walked around the place we saw a pool table. Put a coin on the corner, waited for our turn and voila ! People were looking at us like we were aliens. So what? Yes I am gifted and I play like a goddess... So what ? ;) Plus 1* For the ambiance The music was cool. The mojito was tasty. The pool table was in good condition. The people were... Well they didn't care at all about nothing actually. Good times ! Minus 1* For the sound I am usually happy with the music, everywhere I go. I loved the music there too ! But man was it loud? I left with bleeding ears - not litteraly - and a headache. Yes I am still in my twenties ! Ok, maybe flirting with 30 quite dangerously. Alright I admit, my standards have changed. I worry about the morning after hangover/headache/how am I going to survive until Monday ? kind of thing. Ok, keep going and we will have a generation of deaf people. Just saying ! Leave me your comments and feelings about the place too ! I'd love to know what you think of it. And perhaps we will meet there sometime :D More details coming soon ! :)

Yelp
Cool room, amazing staff, clean, cheap. Meals aren't great, but I guess that's not why you stay in a hostel!

Yelp
I really liked this hostel, and would stay here again. The prices were great, and getting around Dublin was really easy. The hostel is right around the corner from the tram, and it's on the route for the On/Off tour buses as well. It's two blocks away from the beautiful Liffey River, and there are always buses running up and down along the river (including the bus to/from the airport). The hostel is fairly new and caters to a young crowd, but I saw people there with kids as well as middle aged folks too. The lobby has a large bar, loud music, swanky lighting and wifi/computers. The basement has a gameroom as well. I was in a 6 person room with a private bath, and was happy with it. Each bunk has lockers underneath, and the beds were comfy. I also give them a lot of credit for having a good security system. You need your key to get in the room, ride the elevator, and get inside the hostel. And they are open 24 hours if you want to get out for the nightlife. The staff were not super friendly, but I didn't find them rude either. Plus I didn't come to Ireland with the expectation of being catered to in a hostel. That's what high priced hotels are for! Some of the guests were a little noisy, but I usually travel with earplugs, so I didn't have any issues sleeping. I had a good experience here and found the hostel to be very convenient, both in location and in price. Definitely a good place to lay your head, lock your stuff up, and go experience Dublin!

Yelp
It's okay. And just okay. Not good, not great, not really bad. I thought I had walked into a sort of hostel heaven when I had arrived at the Generator Dublin. I've booked hostels in the past that looked alright online and had good reviews, only to be totally grossed out when turning up. The Generator lives up to its photos and looks nice. ----- The good: - Great bar and nice bartenders. - Free daily walking tours. - Decent location (not in the city centre, but it's only a 10 minute walk which I don't mind). - Giant locker drawers underneath all beds. It fit my large backpack as well as a medium sized messenger bag. Make sure you bring a lock with a thin handle, as some extra locks I brought would not fit. They also offer lockers downstairs for 2 euro per day. I didn't see a need to use those though! - Trendy and fun interior design. They have chandeliers made out of Jameson bottles. ----- The bad: - Rude reception. While getting ready for my day in the women's rest room, 3 drunk guys stumbled in, yelled at me that they had no choice, and proceeded to start peeing everywhere. I quickly left and informed the girl at reception and she didn't even say a word to me, just got on her walkie-talkie and said something in a different language. She could not have cared less and acted as if I was ruining her day by letting her know about residents breaking rules and making other residents uncomfortable. Not cool, Generator admin. Not cool at all. - Expensive prices per night for a hostel. They hike up the prices exorbitantly on the weekends. - The women's restrooms always smelled like there was an invisible vat of spicy fermented urine nearby. It's strange because the bathrooms were always pretty clean, but constantly reeked. I stayed here for 14 nights and it smelled like this every single day. - I was there in May 2015 and it was always really hot. Every room felt like a sauna, even with the window open. Even when it wasn't more than 50 degrees (fahrenheit) outside. - No power outlets in the women's restrooms or even by the sink in the 8-person dorm. I had to clumsily use my flat iron on my bed (which felt really unsafe) or find a place in the hangout area while everyone stared at me doing my hair. There is a hair dryer provided in the women's restroom, but that's it. There's no way to flat iron your hair if that's your thing. - Expensive food/no kitchen. Their food prices need to be cut in half. It's good, but not worth the price they ask. And their pizza is nothing more than some cheese and sauce haphazardly spread onto a tortilla. If I wanted low budget tortilla pizza, I'd find a microwave and do it myself instead of paying 8 euro. ----- I could go on, but I should probably stop here. Would I stay here again? Maybe, if I hadn't saved up enough money for my travels. I'd get a private room next time for sure, as I was (un)lucky enough to have hostelmates that enjoyed turning on all of the lights in the room at 5AM while everyone else was asleep.

Yelp
I've never stayed here, so that's worth saying. I was first here for the Notorious event (past and modern R&B). The space was perfect for it! The different levels had different music and a screen to show videos as well. The bar was crowded but moved quickly, and they had a good deal on drinks (I believe it was 10 euro for two of the same, we got gin and tonics). The downstairs room was small and packed, but it had the best music. We spent a lot of the time down there, taking breaks when the heat got to be too much! The bathrooms are spacious and clean, and the large round sink feature in the middle has Chamber of Secrets-esque foot pedals to turn on the water with. The second event I attended was a market with soaps, candles, vintage clothes, and jewelry. They were also serving hot food from the counter on the first floor where you enter. The third was the Smithfield Food Fair, which was great! It wasn't so big, but I liked what it did have. There was a rad beeswax candle table with cool designs, luxury natural popcorn, and vegan cheese (surprisingly good). I got a chocolate cupcake from Sandra's Sweet Treats & More and it was fantastic! All around, good vibes at this place and I'd reccommend it for travelers.

Yelp
If this hostel wasn't in Dublin (ground zero for crappy hostels) it would be getting one star. It's a party hostel, which is cool if you're into that kind of thing. I'm not, but okay, whatever. On that basis, let the review begin: When I showed up they gave me a bed that already had somebody sleeping in it. The other 7 beds were occupied by incredibly drunk, half-naked 18-year-old boys (again, cool if you're into that kind of thing) who started cheering and yelling when I walked in. And well, even a party hostel should have some sort of baseline, you know?

Yelp
This is probably a great place to stay if you're in your 20s. The Jameson distillery is actually IN the same building, so that's an easy thing to pop over and do. The communal space on the main floor is great - loungey, part bar, part nightclub, with a great, light filled cafe and a little game room type space. Super spot to snuggle up for a quiet drink in the afternoon, but it gets much more lively in the evening. The lights over at the dj booth are sort of eye-searing compared to all the rest of the lighting, so you may want to avert your eyes. The room was clean, and everything just felt very. . . . European hostel, but in a fun, modern way. We even saw some families here, so I guess it's really a spot for everyone!

Yelp
This hostel is one of the best I've been to. It's been opened very recently, so everything is brand new, from showers to beds, which is really good for a hostel. We booked two beds in one 11-beds dorm for 10€ per person and per night, with the bathroom outside. We were actually given 2 beds in one 6-beds ensuite room, which was an improvement :) The beds were awesome, much more confortable that our own bed in our tiny London flat, with many details that are very helpful in a hostel: reading light, 2 plugs with a small surface on top to charge your mobile phone, or to leave your glasses there, for example, big storage space under the beds in which you can use your own padlock... Bedlinen are provided but you have to bring your own towels. The shower was also really good, hot water with a lot of pressure (again, much better than our shower back in London). The booking doesn't include breakfast, but they serve it. You can purchase breakfast vouchers from the reception for 2.50€. The breakfast is quite poor itself (just some bread, cornflakes, tinned fruit and yogurt, and bad coffee or tea), and the last day they run out of jams so only butter and honey were available, but for 2.50€ I wouldn't expect The Wolseley. Anyway you have the option of having breakfast somewhere else. WiFi and computers with Internet, free to use, are available in the lounge, bar and reception area. There is a guest kitchen, but we barely used it, only the last day to microwave something for dinner. Other guests were preparing quite elaborated dishes there, though. Finally, you can leave your suitcases in their luggage room before checking in or after checking out if you need to, and staff are very helpful and nice. The only downside of the Generator Hostel is that is a bit far from the city centre, much further than other hostels located in Temple Bar for example. But Dublin is small, and it's about 10 minutes walking to O'Connell St. We didn't mind it, but if you don't like walking maybe you should check other hostels more centrally located. Otherwise, I totally recommend staying here, it's amazing value for the price.

Yelp
I think a great hostel for the price! It's a great low price but with new and fantastic accommodation. The beds are also really comfy and extensive lockers for if you come early or check early and need a place to store your belongings. There is a bar and it can be a bit loud. But it's located on the edges of the city center but still 10-15 minute walk from most of the attractions. It is though next to Jameson so that is great!

Yelp
Lovely guinness Lovely people Lovely chips (my little bro, who I had in tow, confirmed that the burger was indeed savage) Good value Only con is that it's pretty disheveled ... Had to do a couple of rounds of the building to figure out how exactly the space worked. It's very casual, kinda messy and most people are eating out of pizza boxes at high tables that are ever so rickety. Also had to line up, canteen-style, for drinks. Literally, one behind the other. We're in Ireland - aren't we all supposed to be fighting to the death for our drinks horizontally with the bar? Aren't there rules about that stuff? Still though, we all agreed that drinking in hostels brings back memories of the good ol backpacking days and it was worth popping in for that nostagia alone. Extra props to Generator for facilitating the Winter solstice festivarians in preparing for their ceremony. It's great to see this sort of collaboration in a big business setting.

Yelp
I was glad to have spent three days in Dublin this past December, but because my final plans were confirmed close to my arrival, the only hostel with rooms remaining was the Generator Hostel in North West (-ish) Dublin. They get two stars for the great, friendly staff (who were very courteous) and clean, warm showers and a clean place to sleep. The lack of further stars are due to there not being an in-hostel kitchen, which has always been a great means for saving money while traveling (it can make the cost of eating 1/2 to 2/3rds cheaper). Instead they offered in-house-made meals, which looked delicious, but cost the same as eating at a cafe, of which there are plenty of others around to choose from. Another lack of more stars is due to the very confusing circular layout of the building. I'm sure it looks nice from the outside, but energetically very disorienting to walk in and sleep in. Feng Shui principles discourage circular buildings for this reason! The overall vibe of the place seems oriented towards partying, so would not recommend this hostel for those traveling for business or with a young family. The music in the lobby was loud until late and drunken partiers wandered the halls until early into the morning. Overall a mixed experience, but also very glad to have a relatively affordable place to stay at the last minute.

Yelp
More like a hotel than a hostel, this place is super clean, each room has a set of showers, and the staff is friendly and helpful.

Yelp
I'd give it 3.5 if I could. I found the service on the reception to be totally lacking. The staff are rude and distracted - I realise by the very nature of it being a hostel, the staff are mostly short term, but they could be a bit more discerning. The staff who were on the counter during the St. Patrick's Day weekend just could not be bothered. I came to the desk with an injury and requested a plaster, and the girls on the desk would have rolled their eyes if they could, no one even asked if I was OK - common courtesy like! The food from the cafe is pretty great! I enjoyed their falafel wrap. There is the cafe down by the bar, and then the kitchen beside the counter opens later in the day, from 4pm I think - serving pizzas, burgers and nachos. The toilets need a bit of TLC - and bafflingly the taps aren't hot, only cold. I have stayed in the hostel on two occasions and found it clean, and safe and would definitely recommend it to others.
