44 Best Hotels in Rome, According to a Local (2025) | Condé Nast Traveler

"Although clearly a hostel, Generator Rome surprised me with design-led, fun communal spaces—Chesterfields, patterned tiles, and a lively bar with lime-green stools—and private double rooms that don’t skimp on comfort, each with its own bathroom and storage. It’s clean, friendly, quiet, and comfortable—remarkable qualities for a hostel." - Maresa Manara

The Best Affordable Hotels in Rome

"Only 10 minutes from Rome's Termini Rail Station, Generator attracts a good mixture of those on a budget and those arriving into the city at unreasonable hours. We’re talking students and hippies, backpackers and businessmen—crashing out before an early train the next day. Relaxed, fun, and friendly is the vibe. The property is clearly design-led, but the design is ‘fun’, with Chesterfields; patterned tile floors at reception; and a really cool bar with lime green stools, Chinese lanterns, decent food, and a perpetually upbeat atmosphere." - Maresa Manara

Generator Rome

"How did it strike you on arrival? While your mind understands that this is a hostel, it can’t quite reconcile that fact with how nice it all is. Generator is design led, but the design is ‘fun’, with Chesterfields, and patterned tile floors at reception, and a really cool bar with lime green stools, Chinese lanterns, decent food, and a perpetually upbeat atmosphere. Nice. What’s the crowd like?Only 10 minutes from Rome's Termini Rail Station, Generator attracts a good mixture of those on a budget and those arriving into the city at unreasonable hours. We’re talking students and hippies, backpackers and businessmen crashing out before an early train the next day. Relaxed, fun, and friendly is the vibe. The good stuff: Tell us about your room.Double rooms in hostels are often terrible fudges, just a piece of plasterboard between you and the dorm, but Generator doesn’t cut any corners. Each has a private bathroom, a desk and a plenty of storage space for clothes, not to mention some nice design touches—ours was an odd picture and slightly strange hanging lamp on a very long cable. Best of all, they’re quiet. No dorm rowdiness at 2 a.m. We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us?The bed is a bit firm, but there’s nothing wrong with that, though the pillows could have had a bit more life in them. You’ll need two if you like to keep your head up high. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down.Having a private bathroom in a hostel is a luxury anyway, so finding out it’s spotlessly clean, and the walk-in shower has some vim to it, is incredible. Towels are great, bathrobes non-existent. There are no products either, so bring your own. Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word?Free Wi-Fi, and it’s nice and quick. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you.The bar is very cool indeed, and serves a nice mix of cocktails. Even better, you get a complimentary shot just for staying here. What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay? This is the nicest hostel we’ve ever stayed at, and for €40 a night it puts a lot of mid-budget hotels to shame. Bottom line: worth it, and why?Clean, friendly, quiet, and comfortable. These are all words you don’t normally use to describe hostels, and yet they all apply to Generator. Remarkable."

Good mattresses, kind recepcionists. The best was Nina. The bar upstairs and the views are great for a chilled night and a cheeky drink. Everyone was very polite and even guests were truly nice. I feel I was lucky to find good company in my room and meet nice people also, everyone was mindful of light and noise in the evening and truly the fact that the rooms have air conditioning in summer is great. Bad side is people outside at night arguing and a bit rough environment coming from Termini but not the Hostel responsibility. Just something to be mindful. Overall I would recommend.

The Generator in Rome left me feeling disappointed and frustrated… I checked in a few months ago to spend two nights. It was a night before I started a group tour - the rooms were clean and the location was good too so my first impressions were positive. Upon check in, I asked the receptionist if I would need to check out and re-check back in the next morning as I would be starting a group tour (I assumed I would check into a room with my group like most group tours). The receptionist assured me that I would be staying in my original room for both nights and I definitely would NOT need to check out the next morning or change rooms during my stay. The next day, I spent the day away from the hostel and upon my return to my room I found that all of my belongings from my locker had been removed and the bed striped and remade. I walked to reception to find all of my belongings spread across multiple plastic bags on the floor of the hallway to go behind the reception desk (in complete open access to the public). I asked them why my things had been removed and they said I had “missed check out”. I explained to them that I had checked with reception the previous day and was assured checking out was not required despite starting a tour the next day. After inspection of my bags, I found that they had left my passport easily accessible to everyone, on top of my baggage, as well as all of my flight and travel documents. They had also cut my personal lock (also brand new) off the locker. I do not enjoy leaving a bad review about someone, but the lady at the desk (different to the lady who originally checked me in) was unsympathetic and rude to me despite my obvious distress. In short, she conveyed that this was my fault for missing check out, even though I had gone out of my way to check if I needed too and was reassured I didn’t need too. Furthermore, whilst clearing out my things, they left behind my bottle of expensive cough medicine that I had bought the day before and hadn’t even had the chance to use yet. As a budget traveler this was incredibly frustrating as I was sick and unable to afford to buy a second new bottle of cough medicine. I requested that they ask house keeping to check my old room to see if they could find it but they were unable too. In return of this, a gentleman working the front desk gave me a free coffee for the inconvenience. Overall I was incredibly angry and frustrated that they had not only put my passport and important documents in jeopardy of being stolen, but also lost my medicine that I really needed. I also witnessed multiple people also have issues with checking in, resulting in having to change rooms and checking in and out unnecessarily. I do not recommend this hostel what so ever. The two out of three staff I encountered were rude, disrespectful, unprofessional and unhelpful. I also lost €25 for my lock they cut off and did not offer to reimburse me for as well as money for my cough medicine that was lost. For a hostel on the more expensive side, I was disappointed in the lack of care and service provided.

I recently stayed at this hostel for the first time, and overall, it was a great experience. The hostel is super clean, with well-maintained washrooms. The location is fantastic – it's close to the metro, main bus station, and train station, making it very convenient. They also offer lockers for early check-in and have laundry facilities available. My only drawback was the interaction with Nina at the front desk. While she was polite, she seemed to make things unnecessarily difficult and responded to my simple concerns with a somewhat superior attitude, which was a bit off-putting.

Stayed in the private king room with bathroom. Very clean, comfortable, and everything functioned properly. I don’t understand the reviews saying it’s in a bad area. We walked around at night and had breakfast at a cafe across the street. Plenty of people and students around. There’s a beautiful park and metro stop one block away. It felt safe to us. The only negative is a weird vibe. It felt like a hotel, and does not have the social/welcoming atmosphere of a hostel. It’s marketed as a fun social party hostel, but instead there are many school groups with loud kids running around. Never seen kids at a hostel before. The roof is only open in summer. They have a fridge and microwave but also signs everywhere that you can’t bring your own food in, which is unreasonable for a hostel. We had leftovers from a restaurant and asked the front desk for a plate or bowl to heat our food on, and they acted like this request was impossible saying they “don’t have plates”. Super bizarre. Either way, this didn’t affect our stay we really appreciated the cleanliness and modern amenities.

The hostel is clean and the rooms are spacious. I had a group of students and it was simple enough. The food was not up to my expectations. I looked forward to breakfast but it was the same for the days we were there. The worst experience was when the group in-charge got her bag stolen at the reception area. The receptionist was very polite and she sent us to the police station to make a report, which we did. When we returned we found a new person at the reception, Lorenzo, if I am not wrong. He was outright rude and disrespectful. We called him out for this but he refused to back down and even had the audacity to doubt whether the lady even had the bag in the first place. I was outright peeved. The hostel manager, though, is made of kindness and so that kind of made up for Mr. Lorenzo's insolence. |It seems they know thieves come in from the street when a group arrives, but there is no written warning... they could not allow us to see the CCTV footage because the laws don't allow it. Eiiih!! ||No matter how broke I am, it will be the last place I think of staying in in Rome.

Google
I really rate this place. If you want somewhere thats a little more friendly on the pocket, dont mind sharing a room, and want some where clean, this could be the one for you. Was clean, safe, easy to get around Rome, and super friendly. Staff were really good.

The location was brilliant, very close to the main transport hub. It was in a 'sketchy' area as other reviews have said, but overall it was still safe to walk about alone at night.||Some of the night-time staff are not friendly at all, as they were going to phone in sick the next day.||The daytime staff were nice however.||The rooms were tidy, however underneath my bed sheet, there was dried up blood, I never raised the issue, doubt anything would have happened.||You do have to rent a towel or padlock, so make sure you bring these first like I did!||The breakfast was not worth €8, it was half a sliced bread (not even a full one), an out of date soft apple, crisps, bottle water yoghurt and a chocolate croissant. I never even got a coffee as there was some kind of small print where you don't get it before 7am..||My room mates were fine, all very respectful and kept quiet at night. ||There is a bar, but I never saw it busy, this should be advertised more with drinks and food offers etc.||Overall, it was still a good place to stay, as you'll hardly be in the hostel, as will just be travelling around the city. ||The Colisuem was only around 10-15 minutes walk away, main station around 5.||The price was reasonable for what was essentially a chain of know worldwide hostels.||Would I stay again? I would say yes, mainly due to location, but certain staff definitely need to engage more.||||

For groups, schools, tour guides, teachers: Nice and quite clean rooms, located near to Termini Railway Station. It has a bar downstairs, not too bad WiFi connection. I was positively surprised by the air conditioning, towels, electronic cards, the view from the room and baggage lockers. The food on the other hand is terrible, basic and not suitable for children, so try finding sth outsaide the hotel. The service is not always polite and understanding and behaving sometimes like they are offended about many things. BUT the biggest minus is the division between the main London headquarters and the reception itself in Rome. Pay attention to that, when you’ll be making any arrangements for the groups like timetables, allergies, sending the documents etc. In general it’s fine and affordable.

Yelp
In further review of my experience with this hostel, and after some time, I have these recommendations: 1. Never pay up front. You are most likely in a foreign country, that makes you vulnerable. If you pay up front, they can hold your bed hostage hoping you will be desperate enough to pay the full charge again. This mistake cost me over €400. 2. Never use a third party app to book. Only book on their website (and again, do not pay upfront). 3. For those with disabilities: Only ask them for accommodations via email, so that you have a paper trail. The hard truth is you can follow all the rules and if they want to strong arm you and steal your money, they can and will. It happened to me. They flat out refused to honor my reservation and told me if I wanted to stay I'd have to pay a second time. They are crooks so BE CAREFUL.

Yelp
Pessimo. Horible services. Check in, obnoxious and loud, and very unprofessional girl trying to speak broken English and very inadequate when I speak Italian. As i spoke Italian i was treated as a lower level being. The girl try to force sell a lockers price 6 euro each. Very pushy. I booked a bed in a 4 bed female dormitory. At least my believe. I enter the room ready to relax when old male entered age 60+, dressed like coming from construction site, I told he is fixing the restroom. After I asked how long will take he said he is a guest. I told it was an error. I went to the reception and try to understand what was going on. Older male with glasses informed me that my room is mixed dormitory. So I opened my confirmation email where this information was committed. His response was, I need to think about others who are coming next and had booked female dormitory. No assistance was offered. I discovered that if he moved me to ladies dormitory it costed less,as results they were supposed to refund some of what I was charged. I suppose this explain the resilience and undesirability to help me. Second night At 1 am they closed the rooftop bar and those males come to the room, not respectfully, snoring and other corporeal sound, make it impossible to sleep. I went down to the reception after 4 hours of torture. Where a male age 30ties allowed himself to scream at me with anger and extreme hostility. I honestly felt uncomfortable. I am a women and I feel in danger. He screamed until I couldn't stop crying. Extremely verbally abusive. I look for another hotel but as I am leaving shortly I couldn't find. The screaming man saw my review and bring a napkin, saying sorry I scream, but he justified his aggressive behavior with:I am not responsible for this, this is between you and the hotel!" The stuff is poorly mannered. Lack of basic human consideration and absolutely unprofessional. Not welcoming, not friendly. Absolutely disrespectful and just poorly behaved unhealthy individuals. Just Horible. I don't recommend it. Dangerous, dirty, dingy zone full of drug dealers homeless and a lot of stools around this hostel. It looks shiny from the outside, but it is really Horible. This is not safe for ladies solo travelers. It's just abusive and toxic and really traumatizing. Never again. I don't recommend.

Yelp
Not the best location- near the train station but that is it. Pretty far from everything else. The bed was okay, pillowed were bad. I just don't recommend this hostel.

Yelp
Extremely nice hostel in central Rome. This hostel feels more like a hotel where you just don't know your roommates beforehand. The place is super clean and nicely decorated, cool and fresh. Dorms have their own bathrooms with hairdryers. The beds are comfortable, sheets included in the room price. I really like that there is a reading light and a power socket in every bed. Cafeteria and bar are found on the ground floor, where you can for example buy breakfast. Staff is also very friendly and welcoming. The only small minus must be the location, however it is very close to the central station (convenient when arriving/leaving), the area does not feel super safe during dark hours. In conclusion I would recommend this place if you want to have the most comfortable hostel stay in the eternal city!

Yelp
Stayed in a Generator hostel before in Dublin and that one is much better. In Rome they wanted to charge me 5€ for a towel when there were none in the room when I checked in. The coffee is served watery and cold which is a disappointment for Italy. Breakfast is way over priced for just cereal and canned fruit. The worst part was that they forgot I was there and gave my room to a couple who came in at 3 am while I was sleeping. No apologies from the staff. For the price I think that there are much better places to stay in Rome.

Yelp
I stayed in Generator for a few nights prior to boarding my cruise. The stay was pleasant and clean. A great hostel with great interior and young vibe. It is close to the train station of termini so it was great for any people looking for a place to crash. The night we checked in we got free shot coupons because of a Sunday. People were very friendly and helpful. They also provide you with a map to show you around Rome!

Yelp
During my recent stay, I booked two nights in a dorm room for Friday and Saturday, May 10 & 11. The first night, on Friday, I was awakened by an older (possibly homeless) man running around in circles, screaming loudly, banging on the beds, and throwing things. Being a small girl, this was very frightening. I promptly left the room and went to the front desk. Several other people also went up to complain and 2 other people from my room left as well. Upon going to the front desk, the staff went to check the room and verified that there was a crazy man in there. They said they would call the police. I waited one hour, then went to check in the status with the front desk. A new employee, a female, informed me that they could not call the police because they didn't see anything happen. I asked for a room switch and she said she had nothing available. Despite the multitude of people complaining and the witnesses, the staff would not do anything. I had no other option but to leave and find a new hostel. It was midnight at this point, and it was difficult to find somewhere else to stay. The area was dark and sketchy, and it was very scary trying to find somewhere else.

Yelp
I had a bad experience at the London generator hostel so I was not expecting much here, but I was thoroughly surprised when I arrived. The neighborhood is not the best, much like any bad neighborhood in any big city, it reminded me of inner city Los Angeles. The hostel itself is amazing. I stayed in both a triple and a quad on separate stays and I enjoyed them both. The private bathrooms are extremely nice, towels, shampoo, and soap are all included. The beds are clean and very comfortable. Each bunk in the quad had an electrical outlet and a private light, which was very accommodating. The rooms are plenty spacious for luggage, included full length mirrors, and had great air conditioning. The breakfast included is doable but not fantastic, it includes cheese, hard boiled eggs, cake, yoghurt, and ham. Overall I would most definitely stay here again if I had to visit Rome.

Yelp
Do NOT book with Generator. I booked a stay here through Expedia, and the second I hit book I realized the dates had gotten messed up. I immediately called Expedia customer service within two minutes and explained the situation. They said they had to talk to Generator to switch my dates, but that they would endorse switching my dates without me having to pay. Generator denied this request and I had to cancel my reservation and pay the full price of the reservation. All I wanted to do was switch my dates to a month later, and they wouldn't let me. Awful customer service.
