44 Best Hotels in Rome, According to a Local (2025) | Condé Nast Traveler

"Although clearly a hostel, Generator Rome surprised me with design-led, fun communal spaces—Chesterfields, patterned tiles, and a lively bar with lime-green stools—and private double rooms that don’t skimp on comfort, each with its own bathroom and storage. It’s clean, friendly, quiet, and comfortable—remarkable qualities for a hostel." - Maresa Manara

The Best Affordable Hotels in Rome

"Only 10 minutes from Rome's Termini Rail Station, Generator attracts a good mixture of those on a budget and those arriving into the city at unreasonable hours. We’re talking students and hippies, backpackers and businessmen—crashing out before an early train the next day. Relaxed, fun, and friendly is the vibe. The property is clearly design-led, but the design is ‘fun’, with Chesterfields; patterned tile floors at reception; and a really cool bar with lime green stools, Chinese lanterns, decent food, and a perpetually upbeat atmosphere." - Maresa Manara

Generator Rome

"How did it strike you on arrival? While your mind understands that this is a hostel, it can’t quite reconcile that fact with how nice it all is. Generator is design led, but the design is ‘fun’, with Chesterfields, and patterned tile floors at reception, and a really cool bar with lime green stools, Chinese lanterns, decent food, and a perpetually upbeat atmosphere. Nice. What’s the crowd like?Only 10 minutes from Rome's Termini Rail Station, Generator attracts a good mixture of those on a budget and those arriving into the city at unreasonable hours. We’re talking students and hippies, backpackers and businessmen crashing out before an early train the next day. Relaxed, fun, and friendly is the vibe. The good stuff: Tell us about your room.Double rooms in hostels are often terrible fudges, just a piece of plasterboard between you and the dorm, but Generator doesn’t cut any corners. Each has a private bathroom, a desk and a plenty of storage space for clothes, not to mention some nice design touches—ours was an odd picture and slightly strange hanging lamp on a very long cable. Best of all, they’re quiet. No dorm rowdiness at 2 a.m. We’re craving some deep, restorative sleep. They got us?The bed is a bit firm, but there’s nothing wrong with that, though the pillows could have had a bit more life in them. You’ll need two if you like to keep your head up high. Please tell us the bathroom won’t let us down.Having a private bathroom in a hostel is a luxury anyway, so finding out it’s spotlessly clean, and the walk-in shower has some vim to it, is incredible. Towels are great, bathrobes non-existent. There are no products either, so bring your own. Maybe the most important topic of all: Wi-Fi. What’s the word?Free Wi-Fi, and it’s nice and quick. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you.The bar is very cool indeed, and serves a nice mix of cocktails. Even better, you get a complimentary shot just for staying here. What was most memorable—or heartbreaking—about your stay? This is the nicest hostel we’ve ever stayed at, and for €40 a night it puts a lot of mid-budget hotels to shame. Bottom line: worth it, and why?Clean, friendly, quiet, and comfortable. These are all words you don’t normally use to describe hostels, and yet they all apply to Generator. Remarkable."

Generator Rome, a Design Boutique Hotel Rome, Italy

"Generator Rome is set in a 19th-century building, a 3-minute walk from Termini Central Station and even closer to the Vittorio Emanuele Metro stop. At Generator Rome's you can chill out on the shared rooftop terrace, after a day spent visiting the surroundings." - My Boutique Hotel (en)

This was one of the worst hotel experiences I’ve ever had. Even though my sister was the one who checked in and I was her guest, the staff treated me with shocking rudeness and complete lack of professionalism. When I tried to order a simple drink, they refused because my name wasn’t on the reservation. Later, when I asked a quick question at the desk, the concierge didn’t just brush me off — he actually argued with me, accused me of being disrespectful, and embarrassed me in front of another guest. The staff here clearly have no idea what hospitality means. Instead of being welcoming or helpful, they act hostile and confrontational. If you value basic respect and decent service, avoid this place at all costs. There are plenty of other hotels nearby where guests are treated like human beings, this is not one of them.

The stay was decent, quite spacious. location wise; convenient to reach Roma Termini station which is the center of transport for all places in and around Rome. Regarding facilities it was okay but the washrooms should be paid more attention to, as few of the facilities weren’t working as expected like the jet spray even the flush wasnt proper. All in all pretty good for the price.

I stayed in Generator for a week at the beginning of September 2025. Great location close to Termini station, very friendly staff, front desk 24/7. I had a 8 bed room, very clean, comfy bed and pillow and also space for luggage under the bed. The room had 2 bathrooms, equiped with 2 desks, AC worked perfect during the hot days. I really enjoyed also the rooftop bar at 7th floor. The only thing that annoyed me was the buzzing sound when somebody entered the room. I was very satisfied with the Generator, can only recommend it!

I've travelled by my self for the first time and the fact that they had 4 beds female doorms really helped to foster new friendships. ||||The staff was just amazing and the facility is good. ||||Before arriving, I've read a few reviews on the location not being safe at night, but I had no issues coming back from a night in Trastevere (in the other side of town). ||||The metro station is really close by and you can easily walk to the Coliseum from the hostel. ||||Really recommend this stay and would come back again!

Great deal for the price. They even let stray guests who got in early like me, rest a bit in the waiting room with couches. Check in at 2, cheap late check out option for 1pm (regular 10am). STRONG air conditioning, roof deck, smoking area on floor 1, breakfast $8 (croissants, cereal, cappuccino etc. Upon request.). The woman working evenings this week has been very helpful to make sure I have a smooth stay and was able to extend in the same room! Even nice views from the room. Shower in room.

I stayed for 2 nights. 1 night in a dorm and 1 night in a private room. The good: Nice dorm and there's hot water. The location is convenient if you are arriving by train. The bad: Kind of sketchy location. Annoying that guests have to pay for locker storage (4-6 euros for 4 hours). I was already a guest and changing from a dorm to a private room and they still made me pay for the locker.

Unfortunately, my experience at the Generator Rome was quite awful, particularly due to to the atrocious treatment and incompetence by reception. I came here on a tour with G Adventures, a company that organizes travel groups. The issue started when one of the people in my group were trying to confirm our room reservation for an extra day at the Generator Rome that was not part of the original tour. To the entire groups' surprise, we were expected to check in and check out in order to stay these one or two extra days not part of the original tour. The fact that we had to check in and check out for that day was not communicated to us by G Adventures or the Generator Rome, so if my peer did not ask reception if the reservation was confirmed, we would have left all of our stuff in our rooms. I understand if this is the policy, but it was failed to be communicated to us, even though we used G Adventures to book the extra one or two days. Once we realized this as a group, we asked the reception if it would be possible to put the G Adventures "extra day" people together in a new room. This is where the problems really started. The receptionist was INCREDIBLY rude saying "Do you guys even know what it's like to be a receptionist?" and "You guys are making a big deal over 10 Euro to store your things in a locker!". I'm not sure why this receptionist had such an attitude when a "I'm sorry guys, that is not possible given the volume of people checking in today." would have been sufficient. Nevertheless, we checked out and stored our things in the lockers and went about our day. When it was time to check in again, the fiasco really started. This time, there was a new receptionist and she told us that the "extra day" people from G Adventures had already checked in and there was no reservation for us, although me and my tour friend showed her the voucher from G Adventures confirming the extra day reservation. The tour guide from G Adventures came down and tried to explain to them that some people were staying an extra day, some were continuing on the tour, and some were leaving. One of my peers showed them a diagram trying to explain the situation so that she could understand. Once we thought she understood, we got our new room. However, once we started unpacking our things in the new room they told us to come down because they put us in the wrong room even though we thought they understood the situation. So then we had to check in AGAIN, get placed in a new room with a new card. At that point this whole thing has gone on for hours. I enter my new room and there is no towel and there is blood on the sheets and they are in an entangled mess. I went down to reception AGAIN asking if I can get new sheets and a towel. Then the receptionist had to make a few calls and told me I couldn't get new sheets or a towel until 7:30pm (it was around 5:00pm at this point and I had dinner reservations at 8). I desperately needed to shower after being out all day. I asked them "Can I just have a towel?" and they told me I needed to wait until 7:30pm JUST to get a towel. And this was after hours of them being rude, messing up the reservation, and not having clean rooms. So eventually they just decided to give me the towel after I voiced how ridiculous this all was and how they were doing nothing to resolve the situation. In previous days, my friend had asked for a bath mat or a towel to put on the floor to absorb the water on the floor and she said they gave her a hard time with that too. The bathroom was literally flooded with nothing to soak up the water. I would also like to mention that when we came down the first day for our alotted breakfast time, they took away the breakfast even though we came down during our given time. In summary, the staff at the Generator Rome is EXTREMELY incompetent, unfriendly, unwilling to remedy the situation, and incredibly rude. My tour group understands that sometimes there are mix ups and not everything can always go according to plan, but how many times can you mess things up and with an attitude?

I’ve never stayed at such a terrible hostel! This is by far the worst hostel I’ve ever encountered: First, checking in half an hour early requires an extra fee. Even checking in a few minutes early isn’t allowed. Later, when I went to the front desk again between 13:55 and 13:58, they emphasized that check-in time was strictly 14:00. After checking in, I found that they hadn’t cleaned the room, so I had to take photos and go back to the front desk again to ask them to clean it. Second, the hostel doesn’t provide tableware. I’ve never stayed at a hostel that doesn’t offer tableware. When I first asked them for a plate and a fork, they lied and said they had no tableware (they have a restaurant and a kitchen—how could they not have any? Liars!). They forced me to buy breakfast from their restaurant instead. I told them I had used their tableware the previous day, so they went inside and brought me a plate and a fork. But then they demanded I either leave my passport as collateral or pay a €10 deposit. I said keeping a passport as collateral is illegal and refused, offering to pay the €10 by card instead. I told them I needed to leave the plate in their fridge and return it when I came back in the evening, but they said no. (I don’t understand—since I’d already left a €10 deposit with them, how valuable could their plates be?) In the end, I didn’t get to borrow their plate. Third, there are suspicions of racism. I was the first to check in and was assigned to Bed 1 (a top bunk), which I thought was reasonable at the time. However, the Asian girl who checked in right after me was assigned to Bed 3 (also a top bunk) instead of Bed 2 (a bottom bunk). All the non-Asian girls who checked in later were assigned to bottom bunks. This is racism!!! Fourth, there are no toiletries in the shower room (though this is somewhat understandable). Fifth, there are no hooks in the shower room to hang clothes. There’s no toilet paper or trash can in the shower room either. Sixth, there are no bed curtains. Seventh, the hair dryer is barely usable—you have to hold the button down the whole time, and the air flow is intermittent. Eighth, their WiFi is terrible and keeps disconnecting. Ninth, there’s no kitchen provided—only two small fridges and a microwave, and again, no tableware is offered. If you ask them for a plate, they will demand you pay them to provide food to you instead. Tenth, the surrounding environment is very sketchy. Finally, I want to say this is the worst hostel I’ve ever stayed at. I’ve stayed at Generator hostels in other cities and had great experiences, but I never expected the Generator in Rome to be this bad. No wonder almost no one recommends it! I never used to write reviews, but this is my first negative review ever. I’ll even download the app just to leave a bad review for this hostel. It’s absolutely terrible!!! I’m even wasting my limited travel time just to write this negative review—you can imagine how outrageous it is! Never stay here, otherwise you’ll end up miserable!

Yelp
In further review of my experience with this hostel, and after some time, I have these recommendations: 1. Never pay up front. You are most likely in a foreign country, that makes you vulnerable. If you pay up front, they can hold your bed hostage hoping you will be desperate enough to pay the full charge again. This mistake cost me over €400. 2. Never use a third party app to book. Only book on their website (and again, do not pay upfront). 3. For those with disabilities: Only ask them for accommodations via email, so that you have a paper trail. The hard truth is you can follow all the rules and if they want to strong arm you and steal your money, they can and will. It happened to me. They flat out refused to honor my reservation and told me if I wanted to stay I'd have to pay a second time. They are crooks so BE CAREFUL.

Yelp
Pessimo. Horible services. Check in, obnoxious and loud, and very unprofessional girl trying to speak broken English and very inadequate when I speak Italian. As i spoke Italian i was treated as a lower level being. The girl try to force sell a lockers price 6 euro each. Very pushy. I booked a bed in a 4 bed female dormitory. At least my believe. I enter the room ready to relax when old male entered age 60+, dressed like coming from construction site, I told he is fixing the restroom. After I asked how long will take he said he is a guest. I told it was an error. I went to the reception and try to understand what was going on. Older male with glasses informed me that my room is mixed dormitory. So I opened my confirmation email where this information was committed. His response was, I need to think about others who are coming next and had booked female dormitory. No assistance was offered. I discovered that if he moved me to ladies dormitory it costed less,as results they were supposed to refund some of what I was charged. I suppose this explain the resilience and undesirability to help me. Second night At 1 am they closed the rooftop bar and those males come to the room, not respectfully, snoring and other corporeal sound, make it impossible to sleep. I went down to the reception after 4 hours of torture. Where a male age 30ties allowed himself to scream at me with anger and extreme hostility. I honestly felt uncomfortable. I am a women and I feel in danger. He screamed until I couldn't stop crying. Extremely verbally abusive. I look for another hotel but as I am leaving shortly I couldn't find. The screaming man saw my review and bring a napkin, saying sorry I scream, but he justified his aggressive behavior with:I am not responsible for this, this is between you and the hotel!" The stuff is poorly mannered. Lack of basic human consideration and absolutely unprofessional. Not welcoming, not friendly. Absolutely disrespectful and just poorly behaved unhealthy individuals. Just Horible. I don't recommend it. Dangerous, dirty, dingy zone full of drug dealers homeless and a lot of stools around this hostel. It looks shiny from the outside, but it is really Horible. This is not safe for ladies solo travelers. It's just abusive and toxic and really traumatizing. Never again. I don't recommend.

Yelp
Not the best location- near the train station but that is it. Pretty far from everything else. The bed was okay, pillowed were bad. I just don't recommend this hostel.

Yelp
Extremely nice hostel in central Rome. This hostel feels more like a hotel where you just don't know your roommates beforehand. The place is super clean and nicely decorated, cool and fresh. Dorms have their own bathrooms with hairdryers. The beds are comfortable, sheets included in the room price. I really like that there is a reading light and a power socket in every bed. Cafeteria and bar are found on the ground floor, where you can for example buy breakfast. Staff is also very friendly and welcoming. The only small minus must be the location, however it is very close to the central station (convenient when arriving/leaving), the area does not feel super safe during dark hours. In conclusion I would recommend this place if you want to have the most comfortable hostel stay in the eternal city!

Yelp
Stayed in a Generator hostel before in Dublin and that one is much better. In Rome they wanted to charge me 5€ for a towel when there were none in the room when I checked in. The coffee is served watery and cold which is a disappointment for Italy. Breakfast is way over priced for just cereal and canned fruit. The worst part was that they forgot I was there and gave my room to a couple who came in at 3 am while I was sleeping. No apologies from the staff. For the price I think that there are much better places to stay in Rome.

Yelp
I stayed in Generator for a few nights prior to boarding my cruise. The stay was pleasant and clean. A great hostel with great interior and young vibe. It is close to the train station of termini so it was great for any people looking for a place to crash. The night we checked in we got free shot coupons because of a Sunday. People were very friendly and helpful. They also provide you with a map to show you around Rome!

Yelp
During my recent stay, I booked two nights in a dorm room for Friday and Saturday, May 10 & 11. The first night, on Friday, I was awakened by an older (possibly homeless) man running around in circles, screaming loudly, banging on the beds, and throwing things. Being a small girl, this was very frightening. I promptly left the room and went to the front desk. Several other people also went up to complain and 2 other people from my room left as well. Upon going to the front desk, the staff went to check the room and verified that there was a crazy man in there. They said they would call the police. I waited one hour, then went to check in the status with the front desk. A new employee, a female, informed me that they could not call the police because they didn't see anything happen. I asked for a room switch and she said she had nothing available. Despite the multitude of people complaining and the witnesses, the staff would not do anything. I had no other option but to leave and find a new hostel. It was midnight at this point, and it was difficult to find somewhere else to stay. The area was dark and sketchy, and it was very scary trying to find somewhere else.

Yelp
I had a bad experience at the London generator hostel so I was not expecting much here, but I was thoroughly surprised when I arrived. The neighborhood is not the best, much like any bad neighborhood in any big city, it reminded me of inner city Los Angeles. The hostel itself is amazing. I stayed in both a triple and a quad on separate stays and I enjoyed them both. The private bathrooms are extremely nice, towels, shampoo, and soap are all included. The beds are clean and very comfortable. Each bunk in the quad had an electrical outlet and a private light, which was very accommodating. The rooms are plenty spacious for luggage, included full length mirrors, and had great air conditioning. The breakfast included is doable but not fantastic, it includes cheese, hard boiled eggs, cake, yoghurt, and ham. Overall I would most definitely stay here again if I had to visit Rome.

Yelp
Do NOT book with Generator. I booked a stay here through Expedia, and the second I hit book I realized the dates had gotten messed up. I immediately called Expedia customer service within two minutes and explained the situation. They said they had to talk to Generator to switch my dates, but that they would endorse switching my dates without me having to pay. Generator denied this request and I had to cancel my reservation and pay the full price of the reservation. All I wanted to do was switch my dates to a month later, and they wouldn't let me. Awful customer service.
