This review is specifically about the Gentle Monster NYC store, not the brand overall.
TLDR: really unprofessional service and communication, feels like they really don’t care about the customer.
Gentle Monster heavily promotes a policy of free adjustments at any store worldwide, so I went to this location to have my glasses adjusted.
First visit:
I checked Google Maps beforehand, which said the store was open. I made the trip only to find the store completely closed for construction for a pop-up, with no signage indicating reopening dates. No one answered the phone either. My time was completely wasted.
Second visit:
When I finally returned, I was told that because my frames have prescription lenses, the staff is not licensed in New York State to do the adjustment. This is extremely important information that is not disclosed when advertising their free adjustment policy. They mentioned they are “planning” to get an in-house optician but could not give any timeline.
What made this interaction even more frustrating was that the staff asked me whether I had prescription lenses, waited for me to confirm that I did, and then told me they couldn’t help me. This could (and should) have been explained before asking for that information, especially since once disclosed, the adjustment could no longer be done.
Overall, the communication was poor, the service disorganized, and the policies unclear. If you have prescription lenses, be aware that this location currently cannot honor the adjustment policy they advertise.
Only reason this isn’t one star is because I like their products.
