My partner and I were recommended this venue when staying for two days in Clifton as part of our debut visit to the Lake District.
Upon arrival we were informed that the venue was short-staffed and that food may not be available, which immediately left us feeling anxious about going engaging further with the venue.
The attending employee later confirmed that that chef was willing to cook our meal; and so, we were eventually seated in the dining area, until deciding to move to a nearby snug for more privacy and peace of mind.
Due to our move (and despite giving notice to the attending employees) we were subsequently left without cutlery or water until getting the attention of an employee; after which, we were attended to as required.
When the food arrived it did not look worthy of the prices asked for (£22.00 for a mushroom risotto at the time of this review) and while the meal was satisfactory when eaten, both my partner and I felt that we had paid more than the food was worth (no value for money).
Having finished our meal, we requested to pay our bill and the attending employee rang up the costs and placed a receipt upon the counter immediately before offering a card reader for our payment.
Having looked at the receipt "after" we returned home from the venue, we discovered that we had been charged a discretionary 10% service fee of £6.80 without being told about this beforehand and despite the sub-par service.
As a cautionary tale, I would ask that future diners throughly check their receipts and raise any issues with their service before paying the venue, and while the choice remains with me to obtain a service charge refund, I have prudently opted to write this review as a way of helping to prevent any further issues like this in the future.
To anybody reading this review I would kindly ask that you "always dine with awareness" and "fully read the menu" as I certainly will from this point on.
NOTE
If the venue wishes to refund the service charge I am happy to amend my review in kind.
