'Bridesmaids' Director Paul Feig on Where to Find the Best Suit in London

"I get my shoes at this very established shoemaker called George Cleverley—they’ve been around forever and even made shoes for Winston Churchill."

Ordered a pair of shoes in January 2025 which were supposed to take 6-8 weeks to complete. In April 2025 the shoes are still not ready. In July I’m told they are being chased. Once again in September the shoes are not prepared and the shop promises to special fast track the order in 4 weeks. I go to pick them up in November 2025 to collect them not to find that they have lost the order again and I demanded a refund. Not what you expect from an old establishment which command top price for their products.

Everything about George Cleverley is outstanding. Stepping into the store itself — nestled in a quaint, hidden arcade in the centre of Mayfair — is like stepping back into history. Glorious oak casings housing the shoes fill one side, as stairs wind to the upper floors housing the workshop on the other. The fact you can hear shoes being handmade as you browse the ready-to-wear collection is special: the opportunity to view the artisans working in real-time, one not to miss. The service is exemplary, you’re treated like Royalty: no request is too small and the staff do their utmost to ensure each aspect of your experience is outstanding. The quality and detail of the shoes is breathtaking: their Bevel sole is like a work of art.

If you own a 1786 Russian Reindeer leather item made recently by Cleverly, consider getting it authenticated. I ordered a bespoke split-toe derby from the original 1786 leather, specifying vintage leather from a shipwreck, and paid £7,000 (Almost double the usual price since there are only a few more hides available according to Mr. Glasgow Sr). Almost a year later, when I received the shoes in April 2024, I took it in June to Neil Macgregor (Macgregor & Michael in Tetbury England) who confirmed they were made from a "Baker leather replica" instead of the original. I contacted Mr. Glasgow Jr., who refunded me within two days, suggesting there was a misunderstanding. While I hope my situation is an anomaly, I recommend authenticating your leather to be safe. Cleverly’s quick refund and refusal to take the replica back is why I gave them 2 stars instead of 1.

I buy my husbands shoes here regularly. (He’s so hard to buy for) What a beautiful store, the heritage and experience of the store and staff speaks volumes. And the product is incredible. I always have exceptional service and help when trying to find a present or something new for him. The craftsmanship that goes into these little pieces of luxury is stunning. Even when I’m not buying anything and I’m passing by I drop in just to say hello. Not only a little shop but a shop of wonders. It’s a must see even for the passer by! London’s best kept secret shoemakers.

If I'm going to a formal event I will always be wearing my George Cleverley bespoke loafers. Handmade, with buttery soft leather and a perfect fit. Not cheap but 100% worth it.

Yelp
George Cleverley is the Godfather shoes, that any man or woman can invest in. This is the perfect place in the whole of Europe to buy the best quality bespoke hand made shoes. George Cleverley are the Patek Philippe, when it comes to shoes. And I have to say George Cleverley also stock Russian leather goods as well, but they are ever so expensive. For example GB£225.00 for a Russian leather belt, made from Reindeer skin and GB£495.00 for a Filofax holder made from Russian Reindeer skin. George Cleverley also stocks they shoes polishes in bee's wax and Russian leather shoe polish in Birch oil. Once you purchase any George Cleverley shoes, you would more likely avoid buying from Church's. In my opinion, George J. Cleverley are much more of a superior shoemaker, than most other shoes. Whenever you purchase a pair of George J. Cleverley bespoke handmade shoe, I think they will last you life time. All bespoke handmade shoes at George J. Cleverley, are made and produced, right upstairs on the actual premises literally they are. Famous customers, include Tom Hanks, Kenneth Branagh, Jason Stratham, Terence Stamp, Sir Elton John, Bryan Ferry, the late Alexander McQueen and the late Humphrey Bogart.

Yelp
It is often said that, "If you want to know whether a man is well-dressed, look down." Shoes are a reliable window into a man's sense of style. And. Cleverley makes the best shoes in the world. I order several pair each year and have never been anything less than in orbits of delight with the finished product. Now, whenever I don shoes from another maker, I simply feel ill-dressed. The price may be an inhibition to some, but Cleverley's prices are well below those of makers who purport to be rivals. And, the durability seems to be essentially infinite. A trip to the Royal Arcade in London will assure a hearty welcome from all Cleverley personnel and an insight into Old World craftsmanship at its best. For those who do not get to London, George and Anthony Glasgow travel extensively in Asia and the United States. (I see them twice a year in Texas.) I cannot find the words adequate to express my admiration for what Cleverley does.
