George Inn - Atlas Obscura

"The George Inn is accessed via an arched, gated entrance on Borough High Street. The pub is currently operated by Greene King on a lease from the National Trust and is open seven days a week. However, people do not need to buy food or drinks at the pub to be allowed to walk around the courtyard or inside the building." - Atlas Obscura

The George in Finchdean were incredible hosts for our Dash Collective Moonlight event. From the first message to the last headtorch leaving the pub, nothing was too much trouble. Communication was spot on, the team were welcoming, and the food was absolutely top tier after a wet and windy night on the trails. A proper local gem with people who genuinely care. We’ll be back.

We visited The George Inn for lunch last Sunday and were so impressed! The food was absolutely delicious, and the staff were friendly, welcoming, and couldn’t have been more accommodating. Despite how busy it was, our meals arrived quickly and everything was cooked to perfection. Every member of the team was attentive and made us feel right at home. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend The George Inn to anyone looking for a friendly, welcoming pub with great food and excellent service.

Myself and a large group attended this pub for a Sunday lunch. The pub is truly lovely with a welcoming and warm decor and atmosphere. There is a large selection of drinks to choose and the outdoor seating is lovely on a nice day with nice surroundings and gardens. I can’t fault the staff, the location or the place itself! Unfortunately, the food is where it gets disappointing. I’ve heard great things about the food, and thought the menu had a reasonable selection given it was a Sunday menu. Half of our table went for fish and chips to be told it was out of stock. This was a shame, so we all opted for a roast instead. A chicken roast was £21 and for the price tag I’d have assumed this would have come with a hearty plate - sadly, I was mistaken. When my plate came, I had 3 x roast potatoes (this isn’t an exaggeration, I am passionate about roasties and the pain of seeing only 3 was enough to have me counting!) of which were pretty anaemic. I had one Yorkshire pudding which I think had been the last one of the batch cooking as it was room temperature. I had one chicken breast which was pretty tough. And I had one half of a parsnip (very undercooked) and one half of a carrot (very overcooked). That was my £21 worth of roast. Our table also received 3 x small dishes of boiled mixed green vegetables to share amongst a large group. One person (understandably) used all the greenery on their plate thinking we’d get more and every roast had its own dish of vegetables - this was not the case. I’d also asked for some stuffing and pigs in blankets (an extra £5), and received 2 x pigs in blankets and one small cube of stuffing. Ironically, the pigs in blankets were the warmest thing I’d received. Now, I didn’t complain in the moment for a few reasons. One, I was absolutely starving. Two, the food didn’t taste bad - it was very much ~okay~, but it wasn’t spectacular for the price tag and the little amount of it. And three, I didn’t really want to wait around for a fresh meal given we’d had a bit of a wait already. I appreciate that the kitchen was probably super busy given the amount of diners in the pub, but it was a real shame. It wasn’t a cheap meal, and there were quite a few of us too. Maybe this was a bad day as I can see in previous reviews the plates look stacked and of better quality? However, for now, I can say I have had much better roasts for a better price tag at other independent pubs. I would return for a drink, but maybe give the food a miss - at least until my soul and bank account recuperates from spending £26 on a roast which came with only 3 roast potatoes 😅🤣

What an absolutely gorgeous pub! Starting from the wonderfully warm greeting from the staff, who were welcoming and incredibly attentive. The food served was beautifully presented and very tasty. The bar has a very good selection of beer, wines, and spirits, and the staff were very knowledgeable about the beers they were serving. Sadly, I was the duty driver, so I stuck to orange juice and lemonade... but I will be back soon and will definitely try a grown-up drink!! I loved the fact that the George is so very dog friendly, and they have a dog menu, too! Thanks to everyone for their help to make the memorial for my brother in law such a wonderful experience. I'll see you soon.

Only stopped for a pint during a ride out around the lanes. But we found a lovely old fashioned pub with a very warm welcome, nestled in the centre of the lovely, unspoilt village of Finchdean. And the ale was nice too!

A fabulous pub in a lovely country setting can only be bettered by one that has superb, friendly staff and scrummy food - this it, look no further! Three choices of Sunday roast were had by us - chicken, pork belly & the trio of meats including beef. All served with huge yorkshires, roast parsnips, carrots & potatoes & accompanied by the most decadent, flavoursome & glossy gravy 😋 2 puddings were had, a sticky toffee & the days special of a caramel & whisky sponge - both served with vanilla ice cream. The stars of the meal were clearly the gravy & the sticky toffee pudding. Very attentive & everyone friendly staff. This is clearly a pub that sells out its covers, so it's highly recommended to book.

We held our wedding reception at The George Inn and it was absolutely perfect. The food was excellent, the service faultless, and the whole set-up was magical. The team went the extra mile to give us the perfect day and handled all the unpredictable events behind the scenes so we didn’t have to worry. We couldn’t have asked for more – truly an amazing experience.

Yelp
Popped in on a quiet Monday night in December.Lovely cozy, traditional English pub.Craft beers and imports available.Polite service and a menu which wants you to come back and try something different.Haddock and chips either mushy peas were very good indeed,as was the cod and a risotto. Can only imagine this place bursting at the seams during the warmer months. There is a designated dining area but we chose to be in bar.Fireplace was welcome on a cool evening.Lovely spot.
