Interesting stop if you are interested in the history of George Washington or Braddock‘s ill-fated March to Fort Duquesne. Unfortunately, you cannot enter and the windows provide a cloudy view of the space, but it’s cool to see this piece of American history preserved. Worth a stop if you are driving by.

The President’s headquarters! Historic log cabin in Riverside Park, used by the 1st US President as military command post in 1794. This was one of many roadside attractions that we saw while traveling through Maryland this past summer. George Washington‘s headquarters was not open to go into, but you were able to look through the windows at thebust of the President. Very cool to look at, however, just behind it seemed to be a little camp of homeless folks. One gentleman specifically was very friendly and greeted us, but I think it kind of took away from being able to walk around the entire building and check everything out due to them being set up directly behind it. Might be something for the city to check into because it might deter travelers from wanting to stop and check this out. If we are ever back through this area, and the surrounding property was empty, we would love to stop again and check more out around the back. *Wheelchair accessible parking lot

I thought this was so cool when I was little but when we brought the kids to share this special historical place, we didn't stay long. There are vagrants in one of my photos a few yards out but still unwelcoming. Someone needs to check on this place as it looks like someone attempted to kick the door in. There are cardboard boxes flattened out for someone to sleep right on the side of the building. Someone is maintaining the landscape nicely but needs security.

This is a historic site. George Washington used this post at the time of war. This is a small lag cabin and you have to make an appointment to see from inside. You can go there in any time 24/7 and watch from outside. There is no parking space in here. You can spend max half an hour over there. Enjoy.

An excellent preservation of the headquarters George Washington used inside Fort Cumberland. Previously relocated outside of Cumberland and then reassembled on this site. Even when it's not open to the public, there's a historical message one can access and listen to that is very informative about Washington's visits to the Cumberland area and use of this cabin. Very well done!

The George Washington Headquarters is an interesting stop along the Cumberland trail. There is a fair amount of information along the way. The headquarters themsleves are rather small and you can't go inside to see what it may have been like to live back then and I couldn't get the audio to work to explain his story, though it worked a bit for someone else when I'd gone on to see another part of the trail. It's worth stopping as you walk the trail through the history of Cumberland and learn about the C&O canal and trains, the role Cumberland played in history and just get some excercise while taking in some beautiful and intersting sites and knowlwdge.

I'm not yet convinced that this relocated cabin actually has anything to do with George Washington, but it's a cool site and I applaud those who have preserved it.
