On the Grid : George's Deli & BBQ

"A permanent fixture in the neighbourhood. They have chickens roasting on a spit in the front window (just in case you’re wondering if the chicken is fresh). The charbroiled burgers are also great." - NORMAN

It seems odd to maybe throw a 5-star for atmosphere, but it really is an authentic and visceral experience coming here. It adds a dimension to the delightfully well made reliable BBQ chicken, served the same way and almost at the same prices for the last 30+ years. I've been coming here myself since the early 90s. An anytime of day or night BBQ chicken place, a hangout of cops, bikers, athletes, movie stars, pimps, strippers, party goers, and just regular folks looking for great food. Tommy, George's son, has since left us, he was a fantastic character behind the counter, but the staff still here are awesome.

Google
This place doesn't deserve 4 stars. Don't go there for a real poutine. They'll lie and tell you it is....yet they use mozzarella. Their chickrn is dry, Processed three quarter slices of cheese. I'm stunned they're still open. These guys gave up years ago.

Google
I love georges deli. I use to go there back in the late 90s early 2000s. It's hot fast fresh and incredibly delicious. After 25 years I went back very recently and it was still as delicious hot fast fresh and reasonably priced.

Google
You have a certain craving.... This place will satisfy 30% of that craving. My 20$ poutine with mozzarella cheese and haddock fish frozen square patties was sub par. Corn beef is ok at best. Customer service is horrible. Place is dirty and old. I'd stay away!. Then the owner replies with an attack against me. Your more than welcome to give this place a try but don't say I didn't warn you. Nothing authentic to eat here.

Google
What a blast from the past! I remember going here after clubbing at Phoenix. Their chicken and ribs are the best! Soo good!

First time trying George's Deli & BBQ and it was absolutely delicious! Food was hot and tastes great. 5/5 Stars

Yelp
Use to be good back in the day.. use to order here almost every night for 6+ people sometimes order more than 1 time a day. chicken wings have shrunk so much, basically bone. They don't understand the meaning of well done.. and now they charge extra for white meat chicken on the sandwich with very little meat in it (all that's in it is little little meat some bbq sauce and mayo, nothing else) and sandwich is already $13 before white meat surcharge or combo. When you get a regular chicken sandwich you need to get a magnifying glass to see the meat as it's mostly skin.

Yelp
George's is hands down the best chicken place in town, and it's not even close. Every time I'm back home in Toronto, this is one of my go-to's. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Ordered double order hot wings and 1 lb ribs through Foodora. The wings were crispy and delicious, just the right amount of spice, however it wasn't the juiciest and the size left me feeling unsatisfied (see picture for reference). But, they saved themselves by giving me three bonus wings, bringing the total wing count to 29. Ribs were BOMB, on the sweeter side, no bbq taste, cartilage cooked to perfection. Try their gravy too.

Yelp
I've been to George's tons of times mostly after 2am but I don't know if it's because I've been going for lunch the last few times and I'm not drunk lol. Its progressively gotten worse and worse each time I've gone. Nvm the fact they don't wear gloves, they touch the money and then touch ur food let's disregard that. But the quality of the food has deteriorated drastically!! Wings are a lot smaller then they ever were, the chicken is not only smaller but doesn't even have the same flavor. The last straw was the corn beef I had today! Went there around 11:45am ordered a corn beef with fries and gravy which at least the fries and gravy were great but the corn beef was disgusting not even disappointing. Discolored meat hidden in the sandwich even smelling and tasting funny after the first bite it took I could tell. Honestly I'm done with this place for a long time and if I do even muster up the courage to go in here again and not just because of the area it's in lol. I'm only getting the fries and gray and that's it!!!

Yelp
The other day I went there only to lose my appetite quickly after finding a nail in my burger and a worm in the salad be aware

Yelp
I have been going to this place since 1991 i moved from the UK Had no where to go eat take out so i was walking and found this deli i asked for quater chicken dinner fries and grazy for in the side... The rest is history.... I met famous people i took ex biyfreinds there... At the end of it all friday night at 1am if im in town from Chicago anytime of YEAR.... Maybe its the atmosphere or the men that remember me from my George Brown and Centennial Cillege days Its just good eats.... Its my kind of food... Yes

Yelp
A bit of a downtown institution. Great chicken, fries, gravy, spaghetti, burger, wings... The place would be an interesting documentary, the area is rundown and the constant flow of people is 'interesting'. I used to love the 'photo' wall back in the day; customers eating their food (I was on there! alongside Master T and other huge celebrities ;) I also used to like the photo of SHAQ in his long fur after an early in the franchise raptors/magic game. George the owner (gone now; back to Greece I believe) was an interesting man, hard worker. George's has fed a lot of homeless people in their day, no uncommon for them to cut deals for homeless/addicts, or free fries, etc.. George's adds character to the neighbourhood and most importantly; adds very good chicken/fries.

Yelp
If you can ignore the sketchiness of this neighbourhood you will find that this place is a great deal for a filling meal! Wait wait let me try again... There is a little dive gem in this colourful neighbourhood were you can buy half a chicken with spaghetti in a large container for around $10! You get a generous portion of rotisserie chicken with another generous portion of spaghetti. I'm pretty sure you can get fries and gravy instead of spaghetti but I've never got anything but the spaghetti when I get the chicken. The chicken is solid, the spaghetti not so much but very filling. The BBQ chicken sandwich and the roast beef sandwiches are ok but I've really only stuck to the chicken meal for the sheer value! If I don't finish it I have another meal later!

Yelp
I've been coming to George's on and off since I was told about it in the 90's and after grabbing a bite last Friday night, I decided to finally write a quick review. You're up and haven't eaten and its 2:00am. You're hungry and you something other than the usual Golden Arches and you think 'chicken and spaghetti'. 'Healthier' option, right? lol The great thing about George's chicken is that a quarter chicken dinner with spaghetti is filling. Pasta is filling period let alone a half chicken dinner with white meat. No dining room here though but there's a small standup counter ledge that you can use if you have to eat it there. Having said that....................the last few times I've been there, I've noticed that the chicken no longer has that 'smokey churrasqueira bbq' flavor that it used to have. Its just a bbq'd piece of chicken that you pray isnt undercooked. I've had to peel away pieces of rubbery fat that are simply unappetizing. Mind you, if youre a 'soldier' like myself, you simply peel away the rubber and dig in. As of late though, there's been too much peeling away before I can start eating... The spaghetti noodles weren't soggy which is all I ask so no issues there plus you get a nice large portion. The sauce won't knock your socks off but for take-out with some chicken, its more than adequate. You can get fries instead of spaghetti if you like which probably means a fresh batch if you go at the right time but spaghetti is much more filling if you're starved. I just wish they'd get back to that original smokey churrasqueira chicken flavor that made them famous. Its almost like now they're riding on the name. Conclusion - if its late hours, its a great option but if you're within regular dinner hours, id shop around.

Yelp
We order from here all the time; usually it's not great but it does the job. Today however was the worst delivery experience I have ever had. First the delivery man knocks two, maybe three, times and as we are walking to the door to answer it - he proceeds to open it and enter our home. At which point I tell him that is completely unacceptable behaviour only to have him argue that he had been knocking for sometime and it was our fault for taking too long to answer. Of course prompting me to ask why did he not use the phone to inform us of his arrival - which naturally he cannot answer. Now here's where it gets really fucking ridiculous - while eating our wings I find one that has a bite taken out of it. They literally walked in my house, ate my food, and charged me for it.

Yelp
**Delivery review so interpret it how you like** Firstly, the delivery man was unusually grumpy, didn't say a word just shoved the bag into my hands and left. Now this is not the restaurant's fault still not a positive note to start the meal off on. I ordered the chicken and rib dinner as it was on the popular items page. The ribs were not very good, a poorly selected piece of meat, the sauce was strange and tasted like old BBQ, and the ribs were very small. The chicken was a little bit better kind of tasted like the ones you get from Loblaws but not worth the price. As a side I had fries which were soggy and not flavorful. Comes with a dinner roll like the ones you get at the grocery store. Gravy was okay nothing to write home about and the coleslaw was thrown out after one bite. Would not order from here again, I would rather eat at the grocery store and could probably do it for less.

Yelp
Hidden gem of hearty, if slightly greasy, BBQ chicken and fries. Yes they have sandwiches, and burgers. But this place is known locally for it's rotisserie chicken. I have been coming here for ages and though it totally looks rough around the edges (especially in evenings) the food is filling and tasty with good portions, prices that haven't changed in forever, and friendly counter staff. A go-to spot for after-drinks meals on a weekend, or even a quick lunch stop passing through the neighbourhood. And yes there really was a George...super nice guy!
google avatar

Yelp
Ok. First things first. The other reviews both bothered to point out the sketchy location of George's Chicken. It's true, it's on one of the bad corners in Cabbagetown -- but that's the beauty of this hood: where millionaires and crackheads collide in a perfect (and SAFE) harmony. The chicken is good, the fries and gravy are great, the sides are cheap and average. Basically, you can get something here that is WAY better and half of the price of Swiss Chalet or KFC. I'll be back! Cluck cluck.

Yelp
To me, George's represents the perfect Toronto food experience. The food is not only extremely tasty but pretty cheap and generously proportioned. Also, there is always the chance you could get shot, which I think is the most important part. Based on the activity inside the restaurant, you'd swear that George's was a front for some kind of crime-based operation but all I can say is, if it is, it's a hell of a front. This food is great. The best deal on the menu is surely the 1/2 chicken spaghetti, which is literally a huge take out container filled with a 1/2 a chicken and a ton of spaghetti. The chicken is rotisserie and predictably delicious. Greasy, tender and incredibly flavourful. I think it's about $10. What a deal! If you're either not as hungry or just in the mood for a sandwich I'd recommend the chicken sandwich. Simple, delicious. Very similar to the chicken sandwich at Kathy's Corner.

Yelp
I've been going to George's since I was in high school, so 16+ years. The one on Bathurst is still amazing, however, I've been really unimpressed with this location. Their customer service sucks. We cannot order online from them because they literally always get our order wrong and if we call them, they are rude and hang up on us. We have also had undercooked fries on multiple occasions as well as an over generous use of pepper, it seems like they just pour it on the fries. I'm pretty much done with them at this point.
google avatar

Yelp
George's chicken at this location is in a sketchy neighborhood, with sketchy people on the street corners and no place I would feel comfortable leaving my car. That being said, no matter how you get to this corner and through the doors (you're on your own for that buddy) the people inside are extremely friendly. The food is cheap, delicious and plentiful. I want to try their Beaches location because I really don't see myself going back to this intersection (and I would NEVER go there after dark), but in a purely review-the-food kind of way, this is pretty good chicken dinner takeout. PS... You have to take it out - there is not a single table or chair to be had here. I think I would rather try a different rotisserie chicken than go back here, but it was okay.

Yelp
This place is great for late night delivery only (till 4am). The only thing decent to order on their menu is the 10 wing dinner that comes with fries, bun, gravy and coleslaw. Everything is not worth trying. I've tried their spaghetti and meatballs which is very sweet and just a massive amount of pasta with awful tomato sauce and yuck meatballs. Again only good for late night delivery and their wing dinner. I'm not saying the wing dinner is amazing, but what do you expect for ordering food past 1am.
google avatar

Daniel U.

Yelp
Horrible experience ordering a take out on Just Eat. Wings were small and dried out, food arrived cold. Not worth the money, better go to a corner store and buy frozen wings.
google avatar

Evan C.

Yelp
A hidden gem in an interesting neighbourhood. I love the quarter chicken with fries, smothered in some of the best gravy I can find in the city. The corned beef on a Kaiser is also an amazing sandwich from here. Staff is very friendly, the food is cheap, and it tastes amazing. Some of the best comfort food!
google avatar

Stephan D.

Yelp
their chicken and fries with gravy is the best and the staff are friendly. will keep coming here even though its in a shady part of T.O. The best time to go is during the day because not many shady characters there then. I would recommend this place to anyone.

Yelp
I got FOOD POISONING from their food and had to spend the day in, either vomiting or sleeping when I could. When I finally had the strength to call them the manager shouted at me that something else is wrong with me and that I should go to the hospital. He arrogantly shouted again and again that this has never happened and that its a very busy place. What that has to do with me getting food poisoning, I dont know. Terrible, a nightmare. AVOID!!!!!
google avatar

Greg D.

Yelp
Great late night eats. I was stuck deciding between the large & small poutine but after the nice flame grilled burger, I could not finish the small. Such a short walk from where I live near Jarvis & Carlton too when everything else is closed. They deliver and are on Just Eats.

Bob S.

Yelp
Ordered once on justeat.ca Justeat told me (via the website) that the food would be delivered by 8pm. An hour and a half wait. The restaurant called me at 815pm asking what I wanted on the burger, when I already specified it in the order. They started making the meal at 815. When I asked for a refund (because there's no way I'm paying money for a meal that I have to wait over two hours for) the manager got irate and began to verbally harass me over the phone. I called Justeat to complain. Justeat refunded me, but didn't allow me to rate the restaurant. STAY AWAY!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
I've been here lot of times. The spaghetti and meet sauce are pretty good. Chicken and ribs are not bad. The service are pretty good too. Although the locating is ghetto and people around the area is ghetto. It is pretty good for its priced.
google avatar

Andrew M.

Yelp
I am a bit of a gutter pig when it comes to good, greasy food, so this place suited me right down to the ground. In my hood when I was in the Regent Park area, it was a fairly regular stop on the way home from late drinks or just for after work. I always got the double leg dinner with fries. Ask for salt and pepper on the fries and gravy on the side. It's heaven on earth. Also check out the fish and chips. Very good for pre-made. The only complaint is the chicken can be kind of dry on occasion, but it's more than compensated for by the fact that it's open until 4am almost everyday and the prices are oh so reasonable. Skip Swiss Chalet any day for this place. Slumming it never tasted so good!

Dee K.

Yelp
I ordered delivery from here tonight for the first time because they have free delivery with a minimum order of $20 (pretty fair). I was craving some rotisserie chicken and ribs so I ordered the Chicken & Rib Combo with Spaghetti and some Potato salad on the side. I must say that the one word that I feel best describes the meal I had was "Bland" - everything was bland! The tomato sauce tasted like it was Ragu from a jar. The chicken had no seasoning whatsoever it seemed and if it did it was so scarce it couldn't be tasted. The ribs were alright but they weren't the nice long ones with bone, they were the kind with cartilage. They came in the same box as the spaghetti and chicken so they were covered in the spaghetti sauce and so whatever sweet sauce the ribs were cooked in didn't mix that well with the tomato sauce. I know it's extra packaging but maybe consider putting the meats in a separate box from the spaghetti? Also, the potato salad was probably the most bland thing ever, it was mushed potato's with what tasted like hellman's mayo and some shredded carrots and zero seasoning. I'm not sure how anyone would think this is acceptable for restaurant food. Let's just say that this meal required me to add salt to everything in order for it to be edible. I'm guessing the majority of their customers really don't know how to cook (even less than the chefs here) and are looking for large quantity their money (especially if this is in a poor neighborhood). If you care about quality over quantity then I would not recommend going here.

Michael L.

Yelp
Not in the best area of town..especially at night but the bbq chicken is good..if you're really hungry.try the chicken rib combo

darin r.

Yelp
Fries and gravy are pretty good but the chicken was way too dry. Get it covered in gravy and it is a bit better. I would almost rather get one of those pre-cooked chickens from a grocery store.

Ally W.

Yelp
They have there good days and bad I've been going here since I was a kid. I've lived in the area my whole life. It's not as scary or bad as people on her claim in to be. As long as your aware of your surroundings and avoid the end/begging of the month time. The lady when cooking will make your order to the exact liking. I always get my fries crispy because I ask to keep them in longer. As for the rostied chicken the dark meat is always moist. Great without adding anything to it. The white meat I find I have to have gravy with it. There wings are really good if you want to spend a bit of money. ( less than $20 full meal). I personally avoid the fish because it is frozen and cooked to order. My daughter loves there speghtti plain. Not there sauce said it's like ketchup ( I don't eat tomtatoes). There burgers you can not have lettuce on them because they don't have any (disappointment). But over all in the last 15 years the food hasn't changed to much and is really good. There are some employees that are more friendly than others but great place to pick up and go home with on a late night. And forget my crock pot meal. This is a cash only business too.
google avatar

Abram T.

Yelp
Food is above average and a good price. Good neighbourhood and easy access from The Annex, Bloor-Bathurst area, and Korea Village. I've always had good service here.

Ted B.

Yelp
Delivery was fast. Food was terrible. Minimum for free delivery is now $15 (was $11). On top of charging for delivery, the restaurant called me to go downstairs to get my food because the driver couldn't find parking. Had the chicken and ribs, chicken was tasteless and the ribs are spare ribs as opposed to the baby back ribs you would expect. The sauce on the ribs was not typical barbecue sauce either. Will not order again.
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
For a somewhat healthy meal late night downtown Toronto george's chicken is great. The only flaw is the location and outdated interior. Other then that its well worth the $

Chris B.

Yelp
I ordered a 1/4 chicken dinner on 21/06/15, late night. I was asked to be patient for delivery, since they were busy as it was Father's Day. No biggie. I had a craving for chicken and I had never tried George's. It did arrive late, which I didn't mind particularly. What was truly disappointing was the meal itself. The chicken was positively ridiculous. The portion was tiny, and there was hardly any meat on this piece of chicken at all. The package was, in essence, a tiny piece of "chicken" with little meat, surrounded by a sea of french fries. The gravy helped choke a few down. The coleslaw was okay, but the buttered roll didn't taste fresh at all. I should have taken a picture. I have never had chicken that had so little meat. I can't for the life of me figure it out. I've heard good things about George's so this was a big disappointment. They should offer other sides because that pound of french fries is beyond hilarious.

Carlos R.

Yelp
I've been 20 years client of George's Deli. Food here it is delicious, and jus for the fact that you see poor people aroud, this does not mean that the neighborhood is dangerous. So, if you are hungry and you want a delicious meal, go to George's. THE ONLY BAD THING ABOUT THIS RESTAURANT IS THE FACT THAT THEY DO NOT TAKE DEBIT CARD. SO, IF YOU DON'T HAVE CASH, DON'T GO TO GEORGE'S. Carlos, George's client.

Mia L.

Yelp
Terrible. The chips are too dry to chew. The fish and chips as well. A lot of portion but poor quality.

Groomzilla W.

Yelp
Pretty poor. We went on the basis of these reviews and they let us down. Soggy fries, unappetising, fatty ribs, with the rotisserie chicken being the best of a lousy lot. On the upside, the service was friendly.
google avatar

Tony W.

Yelp
diamond in the rough, walking through crackheads to this late night take away culinary oasis., dont for get to try the gravy.

Colin J.

Yelp
Ordered delivery from this place on a Tuesday night. The only positive thing is that they delivered late at night, other than that this place sucks. DO NOT order the fish and chips! It consists of two greasy fish patties, not even in the shape of fish. I'm still feeling sick the morning after. Also the delivery guy rang our bell 10 times on our way to the door and was rude when we got there. Would never order from here again.

Yasir I.

Yelp
On your way to George's you get a little worried based on its neighborhood, and then you walk up to the door and something tells you not to go in, but once you do you quickly re-learn that saying your mom used to tell you-don't judge a book by it's cover. The best roasted chicken in the city, by far. Also, they deliver and they are fast. Prices are very reasonable. The family that works there are very humble and you can tell by their food that they love cooking chicken. Do not hesitate to try this spot.

Claire W.

Yelp
Had the poutine here. It was the worst poutine I have ever had. The fries were absolutely tasteless. The gravy was gross and the cheese was just shredded cheese (not cheese curds) and did not taste good either. Will not order here again.

Jose B.

Yelp
The portions are very generous and the prices are very cheap considering your getting fresh chicken at any hour of the day or night that they're open. Not a fan of the spaghetti and meatballs, but you might be. I stick to the timeless classic - half chicken and fries.

George Z.

Yelp
GOT SCAMMED. They over charged me by around $15. Beware. Paid 52$ for 3 1/2 chicken dinners with spaghetti and ribs. Didnt really notice till i told my wife at home. BEWARE!!! The food was okay though. Not the best.

Protorontonian C.

Yelp
went there today. it was pathetic. people are not kidding when they say that this is a seedy part of town. funny how you can walk a few blocks and the energy of your environment can change quite drastically. the chicken was sooo bland. i got a quarter chicken - included a breast and wing with bbq sauce- and i also got coleslaw. that costed me over $9. the coleslaw was so old - it was disgusting. i threw both my chicken and coleslaw away and went somewhere else to eat. the place is also a mess.

Nick B.

Yelp
so i went there and got uncooked fries !!! i think someone is getting too old and think 30 seconds is 2 mins..
