Georgia Museum of Art

Fantastic exhibits, knowledgeable gallery attendants, reasonably priced gift shop. One of the best small museums I’ve ever visited. Can’t wait to go back!

Very wonderful experience! We spent a few hours here and throughly enjoyed 90% of everything there. The other 10% I thought I saw in an episode of Tales from the Crypt but that's just my opinion.

What an amazing building. I absolutely love this museum. Settled in the center of beautiful University of Georgia's campus, you won't be disappointed when you visit. If you are touring the campus, take a few minutes to tour the museum as well. O'Keefe, Warhol, Picasso and many others adorn the walls and displays of the many galleries. The staff is helpful and kind as well. It's a must see!

I was visiting my girlfriend university and she brought me here. The ticket was free. There were some contemporary art selections which were more attractive to me than ancient ones. There was a special event which showed the sound of Waffle House. I couldn’t understand why it was there. The art museum was clean but not large with limited art selections. We spent less than one hour here.

Wonderful museum with gratis entrance. I enjoyed the guided tour. The volunteers and staff are very passionate about art and their museum. I even had the pleasure to speak with a wonderful student named Ray about her work and the psychological significance that modernity has had on artistic expression. A great museum with great people. Definitely recommend, though parking on campus can be a bit interesting.

It was free coming hete but parking was hard at first. Park in the garage to get free parking. I got lost for that but once we got in and able to see the place, it was worth it. Lots of histroy and art from current to the pass. Free and they only ask for donation. Will come here again.

My daughter and I have visited the Georgia Museum of Art twice. We love that the space is free and also provides kids with a backpack to rent, with a sketchbook and colored pencils to color their own art. I typically take my time, letting my daughter find art she loves and drawing it in the notepad. The museum workers are all kind, but a bit on the paranoid side (they definitely don't hide the fact that they are watching you lol). We will be back!

A wonderful experience and free with advance tickets. The permanent collections were very interesting and many pieces of art were beautiful and/or captivating! The temporary collections were not my style but the space provided by the museum was still done well.

At the beginning of the day, I was not even sure that we'd visit here. However, their website noted that you had to make an advanced reservation to be admitted (per my understanding), so I dutifully made a reservation for 2. As it happened, we were able to make it here around 2:15 p.m. or so on a Saturday. We had visited once before over a decade previously, so I had no real recollection of it. The museum is located within a mile of the loop highway around Athens. We arrived and parked in the covered deck. To access the museum, you then walk down away from where you entered. I found the front desk and offered to show the young woman staffing it our tickets. She said that she did not have a way to actually scan those, so we were waived in... I liked a wall-exhibit as you enter: large letters spelling 'WELCOME' but formed from several types of mounted security cameras (none or some of which may be active...). You ascend a long stairway. to your left is some temporary exhibits. These were more of the 'modern art' variety. A series of rooms about Hiroshima and another room with sensory nausea-inducing video. In the opposite direction are the more static galleries. These are laid out roughly in accordance with art styles or time periods. There is a room devoted to colonial / antebellum Georgia, one devoted to Impressionism, one to 1930's Depression-era works, etc. I enjoyed these more than I did the modern wing. We finihsed up and headed out within an hour. The exhibit is free. Unless there is some travelling exhibit that is of particular interest, I don't think I'll likely be back within another decade, though.

You may head to Athens because of UGA sports. (Go Dawgs!) Perhaps you have kids attending the university. Possibly you take the drive to eat at chef Hugh Atcheson's acclaimed "Five & Ten" restaurant. But are you familiar with the Georgia Museum of Art? Reason in itself to visit Athens. With a diversity of exhibits in galleries filling the second floor, you're bound to view something -- perhaps many things -- that stops you in your tracks. Representation by the de Koonings, Renoir, Cassatt, Okeefe and other acclaimed artists, you will also be turned on to talent you likely haven't heard of. I was captivated by the photography of Jim Fiscus as well as the gallery featuring work of black artists. Regarding logistics: the museum is open every day except Monday. Check their website for hours. Parking is free, as is the museum. But if you can, consider putting a few dollars in the kitty to help defray expenses.

Beautiful museum, entrance is free you can take pictures without the flash. There is European art, art from the civil war and modern art. A cute museum that you should visit in Athens.

This is on the university campus, but it is a bit set apart and has its own parking garage. The upstairs gallery includes two sections: one permanent and one recurring. They were mostly pictoral art and not an enormous number of historical artifacts or variety in forms. There were some fun and interesting pieces and the collections both evidenced a local flavor. There was an outdoor space labeled as a sculpture garden, though I didn't see an enormous amount going on there. It was a little less than an hour for a reasonably thorough perusal of the galleries. Not the kind of thing I'd want to drive a long way just to see, but it was free and there were some pieces worth looking at.

It's a cool place to take a date! I highly recommend going for a pleasant evening. There is a diverse selection of art that's intriguing for all walks of life.

The Museum is beautifully curated with fantastic descriptions of the art on display. Very clean and spacious. The Tiffany art glass was really nice to see displayed in front of natural light. There is a gift shop with something for everyone. The museum has ample parking space to walk around. Definitely would visit again.

The most unwelcoming museum of the several hundred I've visited over 50 years. It looks like a prison...ok, modern. NO signage for parking. The entrance to the lot literally says nothing, and looks like the employee lot. The entrance? Have to go through the (unmarked) lot through and find the door. The front desk has no maps or information on the collections. Once on the gallery floor, you walk past THREE sets of glass doors, trying them all, until you find the open one. The permanent collection? You have to ask because there ar NO SIGNS. Luckily the bathrooms are marked. The collection is fine. But it's hard to overcome the sense that they just would rather you didn't find them. It's hard to understand why this lack of customer focus is tolerated here.

My son does dual enrollment for both high school and college. One of his assignments led him here and I jumped at the chance to join him on his quest to answer 30 questions about the art displayed within the museum. I honestly didn't know anything about this place, but we had a great time. I helped him with some of the more confusing questions, then roamed around checking out the exhibits. Founded in 1945, the GMA (which has a super cool logo) has housed more than 10,000 works of art as part of a permanent collection as well as more than a dozen temporary exhibitions yearly. Grab a map at the concierge desk before heading up the wide steps to the second floor. The mape will help guide you to the 13 different galleries. My favorites were: * NANCY COOPER TURNER GALLERY Highlights 19th-century landscapes and cultural exchange between the United States and Europe as well as a furniture piece from Thomas Day. * MARTHA & EUGENE ODUM GALLERY Dedicated to decorative arts of the South including silver, pottery, textiles and furniture ranging from slat-back chairs to simply crafted and painted pieces. Several African American pieces are highlighted here. * MARILYN OVERSTREET NALLEY GALLERY Focusing on modernism, American art of the 1930s and photography. * CURRENT EXHIBITION | RICHARD HUNT: Synthesis African-American sculptor Richard Hunt has a career that spans six decades! On display are cast sculpture dating from the 1950s to the present. Richard was born in 1935, a native son to my hometown of Chicago! Appointed by President Lyndon Johnson to serve on the governing board of the National Endowment for the Arts and also served on boards of the Smithsonian Institution and is the recipient of numerous awards & honorary degrees. ADMISSION: Free GALLERY HOURS : Closed on Monday * Tues - Sat |10-5 pm * Thurs | 10-9 pm * Sun | 1-5 pm TOURS: * Tour at Two: each Wednesday at 2 p.m. * Thursday Twilight Tour: Highlights of the Permanent Collection * Morning Mindfullness: Free guided mindfulness meditation sessions, held every other Friday during the school year. FINAL THOUGHTS I must say, what I was most taken by was the presence of African-American artifacts and contributions, such as a dresser known as the Blair-Daura Chest. It was thought to have been made by cabinetmaker Thomas Day, a black man born free in 1801 whom owned his own furniture and cabinetmaking business in Milton, North Carolina. Privately educated, highly successful and respected among his white peers for his craftsmanship and work ethic. I felt educated in my short time here and somewhat enlightened. I usually visit a museum when I travel to a new city, and my BF knew about the GA Museum of Art so it was an easy decision to visit. The museum was quiet that Saturday afternoon, but there were enough people to warrant being open on a weekend. We spent most of our time in permanent collection hall with has a surprising variety of art - both in style and time period. There's a lot to see - paintings, sculpture, furniture, dinnerware, etc. And it's worth taking your time to read the informational placards next to the pieces as well as the large summaries painted (?) on the walls. We also visited the current exhibit which was smaller than the permanent collection and was a realistic painting series. The exhibit was in a larger room, but there were other smaller rooms that didn't have exhibits. There is a small cafe with snacks that is open during the week and there is also a courtyard with some sculptures that's likely nice in cooler weather. There was no admission fee but there is a box for donations at the foot of the stairs. The information desk has information on joining the museum as well as a map of the galleries. Visiting the GA Museum of Art is a good way to spend part of your morning or afternoon in Athens.

A very nice art museum. If you have time, check it out, you won't be disappointed. A very diverse collection of art from early 19th century to modern.

#1 - This is a beautiful art museum #2 - Admission is FREE #3 - The entrance is hard to find (basically what you think is a side door is the door you go in) This was the first stop (you've got to get a little culture in in every trip), and it was a great way to spend a little time. The permanent exhibits were pretty large and the type of art varied. The temporary exhibits were really great when I visited, and they were nearly all contemporary exhibits.

My favorite museum when visiting Georgia. They have classic art and a frequent change in pieces. I have seen Andy Warhol pieces and beautiful paintings here. This free admissions is excellent for families, students, and events. They are open everyday but I recommend weekends for free parking on campus. The staff is so friendly and helpful. Be sure not to bring large book bags or bags because you will have to put it in a locker. Not a big deal but avoid large bags! I love this place and will be back!!

I love art museums, seeing how I can't draw for shit. No, really. I can't draw for shit. So an art museum with free entrance, that only takes about an hour and a half to see everything (thus not sending my ADD into overdrive), works for me. The Georgia Museum of Art is clean, airy, and has a great mix of galleries. For a day trip to Athens, the Georgia Museum of Art is worth a visit.

One classy spot in the Classic City. A trip to Athens would not be complete without a stop over and walk through the GMoA. The official museum of the State of Georgia, it is home to some of the most acclaimed and rare art by artists from Georgia, the south, the US and the world. The museum has developed relationships and partnerships with other collectors and museums the world over and is able to bring extraordinary works together. Not only are there collections, but film and food. A significant art and culture center in the southeast, GMoA is a major attraction.

We drove almost 2 hours to check out the museum and attend a Saturday Family Day event with kids. The kids liked being able to do something. The Ralph Chessé and El Taller de Gráfica Popular: Vida y Arte collections, as well as the permanent exhibits were very nicely curated, and the kids loved the Alice Aycock sculptures. I think we were there for about 2 hours. We would have stayed longer, but the cafe is closed on Saturdays, and we arrived hungry and under-caffeinated. We didn't get a chance to check out the shop. With a fresh cup of coffee and a pastry, we probably would have spent some money there, as well! However, we were there for the art, and it didn't disappoint.

A wonderful cultural treasure ...excellent small collection of American Impressionism beautifully curated.. Entrance from parking area confusion and "un friendly" ....not really attractive at all

Really enjoyed our visit. Excellent permanent collection provided a brief survey of western art history. Great temp exhibits of photography, marching bands, needlework, furniture, and samurai armor. And free! Highly recommended.

Last time here I was very young...love this museum! Variety of work in permanent collection and temporary collections were extraordinary and thought-provoking. I will be back on a long work day...great place to meditate and admire.

This is a really nice venue that I think all uga students should try to take advantage of! We walk right by it daily on the way to the gym, but I think everyone should visit here at least once while they're in Athens.

I had a really nice visit to the Georgia Museum of Art. It was a nice break from the hustle of downtown and a good excursion on a rainy day. It's free and they have some really fine art work on display. A few of the galleries were closed while we there because they were in the middle of transitioning, I really enjoyed what was on display, especially in the American folk art section. The museum is well organized, the staff are very friendly and knowledgeable, and the gift shop is great! I got an excellent interactive art book there that is full of inspiration and simple drawing techniques.
