I had decent expectations for this hostel: it had good reviews and a great location. I was not disappointed once I arrived back in September, the place looked clean and looked after, the room was alright and the parking lot had a gate. It set off to a good start.
Mind you, I have set on my review for a while because I don’t like posting bad reviews but what happened to me here was dangerous.
During the night, the room I was in with another person started smelling heavily of cigarette smoke and, like I had pointed out to the receptionist when I checked in, I don’t smoke and I’m asthmatic. I started coughing and I feared I would have an asthma attack. The lady in my room checked in on me and said she smelled something funny too. I soon left the room because it was impossible for me to stay there. I went to reception to call the after hours number for help dealing with this situation but nobody picked up. I called and I called and I emailed them until around 11pm but I couldn’t get a hang of anybody. In the end, I slept on the couch downstairs.
In the morning, I explained to the receptionist what had happened both in person and via text before checking out. She said she would bring up the incident with her boss and maybe I could have gotten a partial refund.
To be quite honest, the refund would have been nice since I didn’t sleep in the bed I had paid for but it wasn’t my main concern. The texts I received about the “investigation” they did upon the matter left me appalled since it’s quite impossible to smell something 12 OR MORE HOURS after the incident, let alone days after the fact.
In the end, my low review score is just for how the situation was handled: without care and in a dangerous manner. Since it was an emergency but there was no body available, how am I supposed to feel safe and looked after in a place left alone with its guests?
