Art and Culture in Miami

"The oldest church in Miami dates back to 1896 and still stands in its original location at 118 NE Second Street downtown. It’s as close to a grand old cathedral as we get in South Florida, with stunning stained-glass windows imported from Germany. The Mediterranean revival structure that stands today dates to 1924 and underwent a 2012 restoration of its ceilings, murals, and frescoes that make it one of the most unexpectedly-artistic places in Miami." - MATADOR_NETWORK

MY SPIRIT IS FULL 👐 Things are looking good here. Excited for the future of the church and the things they have to create. The ceiling was splendid and helped the Lord spear into my heart. There was even a flower growing in the bathroom! That’s nothing to swat a stick at. One of the best parts was the grandeur of the parking lot. Full of spaces and a great color. Thank you so much Gesu!!!!

This church has a large group of black Catholics who are very active in the black Catholic Association. It's a multicultural totally open very accepting group of incredible people. The church's historical and absolutely stunning. There are many groups that you can join for many different reasons and they have a seniors group. The singing is unbelievable and it reminds me of Motown music it's just amazing.

Yelp
Ive attended this Catholic church off & on for over 20 years. Really enjoy the service, and the community here is great. Attended several weddings here, funerals. They run a proper service, and again the people are awesome. They really make you feel welcome. Racial stats: About 49% black, 49% white, 2% other

Yelp
Even though I recently attended service here for a funeral and it was a sad occasion the regular parishioners they are in support of the family including the close family and friends made even outsiders feel very welcome I would gladly attend Sunday service here it seems to be a vibrant in diverse parishioner base consisting a multitude of races and ages it is right next door to u of d and in a good area considering Detroit east side I am extremely curious about the history of the architecture of the church it is very interesting and has a almost Mediterranean feel with C inlaid ceiling panels and rich blue colors not your typical Catholic Church layout

Yelp
Gesu Church is a great Jesuit Catholic community parish and a treasure in Detroit. I moved into the city about a year ago after having moved from NYC where I had a wonderful parish in St. Francis Xavier, the Jesuit church in Lower Manhattan. When I got to Detroit, I was dismayed to find far too many parishes downtown where I had settled that were struggling to hold on, with tiny congregations of mostly older parishioners and hardly a music ministry to speak of. At the suggestion of my pastor from NYC, I went to Gesu and was ecstatic to find a diverse welcoming community, families with kids, young adults, wise mature folks, a community in touch with its spirituality and a music ministry that is engaging and a foundation stone for worship. I've since become a regular parishioner at Gesu and it's been a cornerstone of my life in Detroit and feel so blessed to have it.

Yelp
I've visited Gesu Catholic Church quite a few times. I choose to go to the 8am service and really enjoyed the service. The parish is very welcoming and inviting.
