"Set the scene Just 15 minutes from Innsbruck airport, Park Igls is as clear-cut as the stern Alps that surround it. A medical health resort underpinned by the principles of Modern Mayr medicine, Igls offers clinical clout combined with high-calibre holistic healthcare. No drama, no metaphysics, nothing that hasn’t been tried, tested, scientifically verified. There’s not the faintest whiff of incense about the place. It inspires massive loyalty – 73% of guests are returnees (some have been coming for 25 years) and the vast majority are over 40. It’s a discreet crowd but a well-heeled one who accessorise their spa robes with Chanel ballet pumps or Hermès sliders. Although Igls advises guests to come solo (less chatting at meals equals better digestion, plus sharing a bathroom on detox is never advisable), around half come in couples. “It’s our yearly MOT,” say a pair of lean, fit Frankfurt financiers. However, Igls is starting to attract a younger clientele, drawn by the extensive exercise facilities and the chance for a total health reboot. A sprinkling of Brits are joining the predominantly German-speaking guests who come for smart diagnostics, joined-up medical thinking, and the ‘gourmet fasting’ iteration of the Mayr regime. What's the backstory? Park Igls was first launched as a health resort in 1905. Come 1993, new co-owner Dr Martin Winkler started applying Dr Franz Xaver Mayr’s medical diagnostic and therapeutic methods. Park Igls’ career as a Mayr clinic began. It’s now owned by the Gnägi family with Dr Peter Gartner as Medical Director. “There are no plans to expand,” says Dr Gartner. “We don’t want to dilute the expertise.” A subtle dig at its Lanserhof and Vivamayr competitors, perhaps? Gartner heads a team of four GPs who orchestrate psychologists, sports scientists and medical massage therapists, with an impressive roster of consultants across most specialisms on call in the wings. Radiologist Dr Stefan Hiehs comes in twice a week to conduct ultrasounds and makes the process almost pleasurable. What’s the wellness concept? Modern Mayr Medicine believes a poorly functioning gut is a contributing factor, if not the root cause, of a vast array of physical and emotional malaise (from hay fever and dermatitis to migraine, burnout and depression.) The goal is to allow the digestive tract to first rest and then repair. “I’d say around 95 per cent of chronic conditions have their origins in the gut,” says Dr Gartner. Finding the underlying cause of the problem, rather than just treating the symptoms, calls for comprehensive diagnostics and the occasional pow-wow between experts. Detailed sleep diagnostics can be carried out in your room. Inevitably people lose weight, but it’s seen as a byproduct rather than an end goal. What are the signature treatments? Regular medical massage is the backbone of bodywork here, although the Structural Integration (or Rolfing, a type of deep-tissue manipulation to help balance the body) and Feldenkrais (movement to emphasise connections between the brain and body) are superb. Everything is prescribed by the medical team and bodywork can generally be adapted for people with cancer or during pregnancy. Which therapist should I book? Hanni and Josef have fanatical followings (both also use Rolfing for fascial release). Feldenkrais practitioner Helga reads bodies and firmly unwinds them. Multi-tasker Hanni is also mistress of the therapeutic climbing wall – ideal for sports training or anyone wanting to improve coordination and strength. What makes it different? Park Igls has looked long and critically at Mayr medicine – everything here has to earn its place and be scientifically valid. Kinesiology for diagnostics (a complementary therapy using muscle monitoring) is firmly shown the door for being too unreliable, while, maybe surprisingly, the curd cheese wraps and beeswax compresses stay. The PTs are all sports scientists, sports therapists and/or physiotherapists – the range of exercise options is encyclopaedic. What else do they offer? There are eight levels of Mayr diet but the original hard fasting options (0-2) are rarely used here. However the old mantra of ‘chew, chew, chew’ (to produce saliva and kickstart predigestion) still rules and choices remain spartan in the lower stages of the cure (monotony is encouraged). However once you hit level four, the Igls promise of ‘gourmet fasting’ comes into its own – at least at lunchtime. Head chef Markus Sorg spins local organic produce into tiny taste explosions – thumb-sized columns of venison with jus; skate wing and sea urchin caviar with wasabi foam. Gentle cooking retains nutrients, and herbs and spices cunningly replace salt (it truly isn’t missed). The soups are exceptional – fortunate, as supper is always soup (with maybe a spelt crispbread). The fitness offering is comprehensive and imaginative. The Panorama gym has 180-degree views of the mountains. Over 50 group classes rotate, including Bellicon® trampolining, Kybun® (exercising on soft surfaces that challenge balance), and aqua jogging (wearing floatation jackets). Guided walks encircle the day. Going solo, there are 70km of marked running routes and mountain bikes (including ebikes) available. Cross-country skiing is a winter option. Waterwise, there is an indoor pool, four saunas, steam room and plunge pool. The bath floor, home to Kneipping, wraps and packs, positively bustles between 7.30 to 11.30am (and Park Igls isn’t the bustling kind of place). The beauty offering is streamlined and assured with tailor-made high-tech facials from anti-ageing brand Reviderm, alongside Jessica mani-pedis and a hair salon. Igls embraces the old European spa tradition of cultural expansion with a programme of excursions to the theatre and opera, alongside trips to the Alpenzoo, Tyrol Panorama or the Bobsleigh Centre. Where do you stay? You never forget you’re in a clinic first and foremost at Park Igls, albeit a very comfortable one. This isn’t the place for glamorous Insta reels (Lanserhof Tegernsee and Viva Mayr Altaussee possess the design wow factor, if that’s important). Rooms are generous, with substantial bathrooms and, in some cases, their own infrared saunas. The décor is as quiet as breakfast: shades of mushroom, cream and sage with the odd daring flash of orange. It’s almost a surprise to find a television. A tea station (rotating over 40 home-made herbal teas) leads into the lounge and adjoining library offering a decent selection of books in English and a billiard table. Outdoor loungers with cosy throws are popular. Anything else to mention? As is common in central and northern Europe, sauna and steam rooms are naked. However, there is one ‘textile’ sauna for the shy. Breast ultrasounds are a gentle alternative to mammograms – however they do need repeating yearly. This is a caffeine-free zone – however complaints of withdrawal headaches may result in a purely medicinal espresso being prescribed. Final word This is what first-class, integrated healthcare looks like: comprehensive and compassionate, assured and beautifully executed. Healing Holidays (healingholidays.com/condenast; 020 7843 3592) can arrange a 4-night Detox Short Break programme from £1,779 per person sharing, including transfers, full board accommodation and inclusions of the programme." - Jane Alexander

The Park Igls and Mayr cure promises a medically guided detox retreat for the body. Although the service, staff and programme are well designed the treatment has turned out to be an absolute living nightmare for my body and wellbeing. I arrived healthy with no symptoms and after one week of treatment I left with dizziness, splitting headaches, irregular heartbeat and low blood pressure all of which has been ongoing ever since I left Park Igls. This has included a stay at the hospital where doctors discovered a severe electrolytes imbalance du to over hydration and a resting heart rate of 32/min - half of what it should be in a healthy adult. It didn’t help that at Park Igls I was given herbal medicines and teas all of which I found out afterward contributed to further lowering blood pressure. Whilst this Programme might work for people with high blood pressure, normal to higher heart frequencies or weight problems, it is unacceptable to run the treatment uniformly across guests without checking first the individual medical circumstances of each guest. This is really dangerous and as much as I would have liked to leave refreshed and detoxed given thee steep cost of the detox Programme, I left sicker than before with my body in total turmoil, and anxiety through the roofs. To everyone considering Park Igls detox: be careful and check with your doctors at home before signing up to such a programme that might be potentially harmful for your body, everyone is different!

The Mayr Cure works. You will be cleansed, detoxed, and if you choose, jump start your fitness efforts. It is expensive but worth it—although the hotel should do a better job keeping guests informed of the costs of any additional services beyond the chosen package since those costs do add up quickly. The hotel is in the village of Igls (Eagles) about 15 minutes from the center of Innsbruck. The surroundings are spectacular with the Alps and other mountains on all sides. Surrounding the village are numerous walking, biking and hiking trails. Going just a quarter mile you can appreciate the stunning views over open farm fields. The hotel is very nice but not luxurious. There is a clinical feel. My first week was in a "Superior Single" which was nice but small with a twin built in against a wall. Even though there was a nice porch, the room felt small after a few days. Thanks to my great travel agent London based “Healing Holidays” I was upgraded to a double for the second week which was a nice size. The mattresses were wonderful-- comfy but firm. They have a pillow library providing a choice to try out. Baths with showers were a comfortable size. My biggest criticism is the cardboard like toilet paper (especially in a place designed for guests to potty 3 to 4 times daily). When I return, I will bring my own! You should read the details of the Mayr program before reserving. Yes, it sounds a little funky but do not be put off. Simply, you visit a doctor at the beginning of your visit. S/he will explore your health (physical and emotional). The doctor will create an individual plan of food, treatments and exercise. Be careful at this point to understand what services are included in your package and what additional treatments are being prescribed since the costs of treatments not in your package add up quickly (but may be worth the cost). The Mayr program is focused on intestinal health. An essential element is drinking "Bitterwater" first thing in the am with the intent of cleansing the intestines--which it does! Then a specific food menu is prescribed. Mine was protein oriented. For the first 5 days, I had 4 oz of sheep milk yogurt and 50g (about 2 oz) of one of a selection of proteins (such as an egg, cheese, meat or smoked trout) plus a small dense roll for breakfast. Then both lunch and dinner were 6 oz pureed vegetable soup and 50 g of protein and 2 crackers. Then after five days, I graduated to a very nice lunch of 3 oz of meat or fish or other protein and vegetables. Wonderfully cooked and beautifully presented. The soup and yogurt are eaten with a teaspoon savoring each sip. Then you must chew each bite of solid food at least 30 times. Plus, you will be prescribed a bunch of vitamins and supplements. You must drink lots of water and there is no caffeine or alcohol available, although lots of good teas. With the balanced meals and slow eating, I was never hungry. The medical side included doctor exams and other treatments that may be in the package you select. You can add (at extra cost) a range of other therapies including blood tests, computer gait analysis, inhalation therapies, vitamin supplements, acupuncture and massages. However, the daily classes, the well-equipped gym with spectacular views, pool and 3 different saunas (and an ice-cold plunge pool for after the sauna) are open to guests for free. The guests were mostly older Austrians/Germans but there were a few Brits and younger guests. While one week will provide a reset, two weeks really will be a total reset. While everyone is different and visiting for different reasons, in two weeks I lost 14 lbs., 3 inches on my waist and my chest congestion, back pain and tight muscles disappeared! It was a total renewal. And I am planning my return next year.

The staff is extremely friendly and try their best to accomodate your wishes. Even though there was a hiccup at checkin, they showed me several other rooms to choose . Treatments are dispensed punctually in a calm atmosphere. The food is beautifully presented. I was on a low calorie diet, but once my appetite settled into the new regime it was not too unpleasant to follow and I had no hunger pangs after 2 days. There is a delicious freshly made vegetable broth served on tap every day between 10am to 1pm as well as a very vast selection of herbal brews which keeps hunger pangs at bay and enables you to drink the advised 3 litres of water daily ! There is a lovely heated pool and sauna (one with bathing suits and one without, mixed). The rooms are a bit stark but modern and comfortable with lovely views. The toileteries provided are very good...no hair conditioner though ! ||The only negative points : The hotel is near a road so you hear traffic all day...however it is a small town . Also,if there are specific treatments you want to do, please ensure upon booking that the person dispensing them are not on holiday. Not all the activites are bilingual. Wifi in my bedroom was sketchy...works better downstairs

Absolutely brilliant facilities, all spotlessly clean and efficiently run. Food was delicious, even on the limited diet. The pool and sauna area was very relaxing with plenty of towels and bottled water. Lovely walks in the area, bicycles to use and very helpful staff. My daughter and I left feeling so much healthier than when we arrived. We can't wait to return.

I have experienced the Mayr Cure several times in Austria, but the Parkhotel experience for me was far superior. Why so? Without doubt the staff, the attention given to the client was excellent, everyone was approachable and helpful, this made the experience much more enjoyable for me. Excellent facilities, plenty of activities throughout the day to compliment the cure, beautiful scenery, great location. Modern Mayr worked for me.

I am more of the untypical visitor to Parkhotel Igls as I did it involuntarily and did thoroughly not enjoy the Mayr diet. But if you are looking to detox your bowels or just relax, this is the place to go! The facilities are great, the program is varied and conducted very well. The staff is very friendly and professional. The food is good, even if I was not happy with the restrictive diet. The kitchen is very professional.

I stayed here for a week in July and it’s the first time I’ve ever done anything like the Mayr cure. Its more of a fancy hospital than a spa, with fully trained medical staff, delicious food, amazing views and relaxing facilities. I was apprehensive upon arrival, but with friendly staff and guests, attention to detail and plenty to keep me occupied, I had a fabulous time and will definitely return soon.
