Japanese Animation Comes to Life at the Recently Opened Ghibli Theme Park

"The much-anticipated Ghibli Park which opened this month is located about a four hour drive southwest of Tokyo or two hours east of Kyoto in the Aichi prefecture’s Aichi Expo 2005 Commemorative Park (also known as Moricoro Park). The theme park is unlike any other dedicated to an animated franchise with areas like Ghibli's Grand Warehouse, Dondoko Forest area, and The Hill of Youth section. Mononoke Village will open in the fall of 2023, followed by Valley of Witches in spring 2024. Tickets are a coveted commodity and are currently sold domestically." - Travel + Leisure Editors

I'm a huge fan of studio Ghibli and I've watched many of the movies on repeat over the years but I personally can't understand all the five star reviews. I understand it's not an assessment park but I still found it extremely disappointing, especially considering that I had to travel 2 hours on 3 different trains to get here. Back home I had to wake up at 2am on a random Tuesday in order to secure these tickets, the premium tickets are not cheap but the entire park felt like a cheap gimmick. The valley of the witches was the biggest area asides from the warehouse. The lines for photos in the warehouse are so long that you miss out of enjoying the actual park. I did however enjoy the gardens.

As a Ghibli fan, I thoroughly enjoyed visiting this place. While the location is a bit out of the way, it's absolutely worth the trip. The only downside is that it's impossible to experience everything in one day. Tip: Get a Premium Pass to access special areas like Howl's Moving Castle, etc.

I wanted to get the premium park tickets, but they were sold out on the day that it went on sale. Ughs. I was very disappointed because going to Ghibli Park was the very reason why I wanted to go to Nagoya in the first place. My Japanese friend told me to try getting a combo ticket. By that, she meant staying at a hotel which has tie-up with Ghibli Park. No matter which hotel I looked at, every package was very expensive because it cost at least $500 per night. I had no choice but to settle for the normal ticket. There was a very long queue to enter the grand warehouse but the queue was fast moving. There was also a ridiculously long queue for the No Face mannequin. I refuse to queue for that because I thought it looked hideous. There was also a long queue to buy bread from their famous bakery. I refused to queue for that too. We had to climb up a steep slope to get to see Totoro on the hill. The Totoro play statue is for children under 12 but the opening for children to go up is very dark AND narrow AND the stairs were steep. This meant that while going up was not very difficult, coming down proved to be a problem. I waited a very long time for my child to come down because a younger kid in front of her took an agonisingly long time to come down the 90° stairs in the dark. Although there was a staff stationed there, she proved to be not helpful because she didn't go up the stairs to help the 2 children who had difficulties coming down. I believe she was chosen to be the staff stationed there because of her height. Remember because this play statue is made for children under 12, if the staff went up, she would barely fit through the narrow opening herself. The staff had to squat in order to station herself near the stairs. That's how short the height allowance is between the ground and the bottom of the statue. As climbing up the stairs proved difficult for her, she just asked me to keep calling my daughter to ask her to come down now. I waited 15 to 20 minutes for my child to finally re-emerge. I wonder what the designers were thinking when they planned this play statue. At the souvenir shop inside the grand warehouse, the queue was also ridiculously long. The queue was so long that it actually stretched outside the shop! Fortunately, the queue itself was fast moving, so I did not have to wait very long. The souvenirs are really pricey. And so all I managed to buy were the cheaper ones. If you wait till evening time to leave, the grand warehouse house is beautifully lighted up which provides a beautiful photo spot. The cat playground was fun, but by the time my child got there, it was already dark. My child loved the flying fox. Thank goodness the staff nearby did not tell us to leave.

We weren’t able to secure the vip ticket and were only able to enter the warehouse. The displays were pretty fine but there’s a lot of people and it’s pretty hard to take a decent photo without anyone randomly passing or popping in the background. Be ready to queue up for some time if you want to enter the No face display area, we went there in the morning on a weekday and the queue was pretty crazy.

Beautiful park, and the attention to detail to the life size recreations of locations from the movies is amazing. Unfortunately my party could only get our hands on the regular park pass instead of the premium so we didn't have access to the other interiors, plus it was raining like crazy the day we went so we decided to forgo Dondoko Forest. However, from the parts we did see it was a magical experience. And the short film played during our visit was adorable. Highly recommend if you are a Ghibli fan. Hope to be able to see everything next time.

Very disappointing with this venue. Overpriced, dull exhibits. Badly designed park. The distance from point to point is too far and the exhibits are not worth the effort esp Totoro house. The merchandise are very expensive compared to other theme parks. On a hold, not worth visiting unless u love taking photos

Ever since I watched Spirited Away, visiting the Ghibli Park in Japan has been in the bucket list of mine. So, when I found out I was going to Japan, I immediately pre-booked the tickets a few months in advance (which, by the way, is required). The process was a bit tedious—I queued online in Singapore for around 3 hours to secure my tickets—but let me tell you, it was absolutely worth it. The moment I stepped into the park, it felt like I had walked straight into the world of Studio Ghibli. Everything was incredibly well-organized and spotless, and the design and architecture were breathtaking. It truly felt like I was living in the movies; everything was so realistic and magical. One of my favorite parts was the adorable shop selling sweet treats inspired by the movies, which was such a thoughtful touch. The souvenir shop was another highlight, filled with the cutest items. I brought home a No Face keychain, and it’s easily one of my favorite keepsakes. The staff were also super friendly, adding to the overall magical experience. If you’re a Studio Ghibli fan, this place is a must-visit. It’s an unforgettable experience that brings the magic of the movies to life!

If you love Miyazaki's work and animation, this is a place to visit. In my opinion, it's better than Disneyland or any other themed parks I've been to. Love everything about it from detailed artwork that comes alive and interactions with them. One day is not enough for me. I'm so glad I was able to book for 2 days. Fyi...it's not for everyone. If you like rides and thrillers, don't come here. Best to do you research first if it's for you.
