Visiting Ghum Monastery was a deeply calming and meaningful experience. Located in Ghoom, around 6 to 8 kilometres from Darjeeling town, it is very easy to reach by taxi or shared jeep along the Hill Cart Road. You can also reach Ghoom by the famous Darjeeling toy train and then walk a short distance to the monastery, which itself feels like a gentle transition into a quieter world.
The monastery, also known as Yiga Choeling Monastery, is one of the oldest Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in the region and holds great spiritual and cultural significance. The presence of the large statue of Maitreya Buddha and the prayer wheels adds to the sense of history and devotion that surrounds the place. You can truly feel the depth of Buddhist tradition and learning here.
What stood out the most for me was the atmosphere. The monastery offers an incredibly peaceful, calm and serene environment. The sound of prayer chants, the gentle ringing of bells and the cool mountain air together create a perfect setting for meditation and quiet reflection. Even if you are not deeply religious, the stillness of the place naturally helps you slow down and feel grounded.
This is not just a sightseeing spot but a place to sit quietly, observe and reconnect with yourself. I would highly recommend visiting Ghum Monastery if you are in Darjeeling, especially if you are looking for a moment of peace away from the usual tourist crowd.
