My husband and I signed up for the history lesson rather than for the paranormal activity--which we did not experience (though the anecdotes were plentiful and we were shown a photo of a "spirit" taken on the tour just 5 weeks ago). We have been trying to take advantage of local tours and attractions over the last year, and had already taken the tour of the Whaley House, which did tie in nicely with the end of this tour. We were pleasantly surprised at how thoroughly we enjoyed this tour. It was well thought-out, flowed nicely, and hit some good local highlights.
Our tour guide, "Mary Chase Walker," was stupendous. Indeed, she is one of the best guides we've had on any tour across the country. As a retired school teacher with a background in acting--as it turns out--she fully committed both to the facts and to her character, and was an engaging storyteller. Like a seasoned educator and performer, she excelled not only in drawing everyone in but also in interacting with everyone individually, making each feel welcome and involved. Clearly, she loves what she does, and is a "believer" with some standout personal paranormal experiences. Even for the "unbelievers" (like me) and skeptics, she makes you think.
At $45-$50 apiece, it's not a cheap tour, but it does last 90 minutes and is well worth the price if it fits your budget. Wear comfy shoes and bring a jacket (and maybe an ear band and gloves for cold nights) as there is some fast-paced walking, lots of standing, and wind from (sometimes) open bus windows. Whether you're an aspiring ghost hunter or a history lover, you'll enjoy yourself.
