I spent nine days at this surf resort in Gigante, Nicaragua, and had an amazing time. Gigante is a super small, quiet village, but honestly that doesn’t matter—you’re surfing morning and afternoon, so there isn’t much free time anyway. And the camp vibe makes you not want to leave.
It’s a really laid-back, family-style place with just a few rooms, open-air hangout areas, and meals served family-style. The ocean is literally steps away. The owners, Tara and Trevor, have created something that feels warm, simple, and welcoming.
The surf guides, Kevin and Ronald, were awesome—genuinely passionate about surfing and fishing. You can tell they just love being in the water.
Surf spots are super accessible, with fun beginner-friendly waves right nearby, plus boat trips to Colorado only minutes away and easy drives to Popoyo if you want bigger, more iconic breaks.
There was also yoga every morning, and I happened to be there while an amazing yoga instructor was volunteering—such a great way to start each day before paddling out.
And then there’s Paul—the yoga instructor’s husband and easily the most confusing “volunteer” on the property. No one ever figured out what his official role was. One day he’s the DJ, the next he’s the chauffeur, then he’s sweeping the yoga deck, and later he’s suddenly a filmmaker documenting… something. We all eventually agreed his job description was simply “around.”
If you want a chill, down-to-earth surf trip with great people, great waves, and a really authentic vibe, this place in Gigante is perfect.
P.S. If you’re in HR at a Fortune 500 tech company and need an account manager with farm-hand experience and absolutely no resistance to taking on whatever task appears in front of him, you’ll find your guy at Giant’s Foot. (ask for Paul)
