Guide to Italy's Lake Maggiore

"A celebrated botanical garden benefiting from the lake's Mediterranean microclimate; as Michela Martin puts it, “They’re incredibly colorful from spring to fall, and there are fountains, terraces, ponds, and woodlands—it’s just an idyllic way to spend a few hours. There’s also a charming little bistro on-site.” Note that the gardens are closed in winter." - Elizabeth Heath Elizabeth Heath Elizabeth Heath is a writer and editor living on a hill in Umbria, from where she writes about travel in Italy, the rest of Europe, and farther afield. Stunning gardens - some of the best maintained gardens in Italy. Came on a sunny afternoon and managed to avoid the crowds. The staff let us in before the palace and gardens closed… so we were some of the last in and got to enjoy it at our own pace. Great for beautiful photographs! And if you’re into gardening - there’s much for you to enjoy here too. Cost us about £20 to see all the gardens and the palace and I’d say it was worth it.

Gorgeous garden with beautiful flowers and a nice view. Gets crowded quickly during the day, but we arrived before 10 and it was almost empty. They allow dogs inside which is super nice. Make sure to walk in order of the numbers to avoid walking up the steep serpentines.

Gorgeous gardens with a wide variety of flowers, plants and trees and architectural features. Easy to follow signage for a self-guided tour. Definitely worth a walk through if you’re in the area.

Giardini Botanici di Villa Taranto is a beautiful and well-maintained garden by Lake Maggiore. The huge variety of plants, well-marked paths, and stunning views make walking here a real pleasure. You can easily spend several hours enjoying it. The only downside is the rather high prices at the café and entrance. Despite that, it's definitely worth a visit.

Superb gardens easily accessible by road or boat. Beautiful features, architectural specimens and an abundance of colour throughout. A good couple of hours plus a lovely cafe on site

Small wait on a Sunday morning getting tickets ahead prevents this. We visited for 3 hours. I in cluded a map of the gardens. Magnificent horticultural planning around every bend in the path is a new view. There are plants for every season. There were benches for resting, so we could have easily spent several more hours had we packed a sandwich, There were 2 bars, so we could have also purchased lunch. Lovely day! Will definitely return to see the changes for each season.

This is the home to one of Europe's most beautiful botanical gardens. Scottish Captain Neil McEacharn donated this land to the Italian state in 1931, and it opened to the public in 1952. We admired the ornamental fountains, sculptures, and waterfalls that are accented by a diverse array of flora. It is 40 acres park houses 20,000 plants of particular botanic value and more than 80,000 blooming bulbous specimens and over 15,000 border plants cover the numerous flowerbeds. The English style gardens are below and you climb up some steps to view the Italian gardens. You can also view the Swiss Alps border - Monte Rosa - which is the highest mountain in Switzerland and the second-highest in both the Alps and western Europe. In the movie 'The Sound of Music", when Maria sings "The hills are alive . . ." you can see the alps, that I saw here! The garden is a real work of art generated in 1931 by Captain Neil McEacharn's botanic passion, plants from all over the world. Inside the Mausoleum Chapel, the windows have 4 round large stained glass windows, featuring some botanical favorites! If you're visiting Stresa, make sure you stop here!
