Our Favorite Weird, Wild Sculpture Gardens

"In 1991, entrepreneur and art collector Alan Gibbs purchased a piece of property on New Zealand’s North Island that has now come to be known as Gibbs Farm. Immediately following his purchase, Gibbs knew that the property would eventually grow to become the world’s ultimate meeting place of giant sculptures and rolling farmland. Over the past 25 years, Gibbs has hired 22 renowned sculptors from around the world to construct towering abstract sculptures atop the rolling hills of the 1,000-acre plot. Every month, the farm is open to the public for one day, in which visitors will have the ultimate chance to witness the unique adaptation of innovative sculptures to an outdoor environment. Perhaps one of the most famous sculptures on Gibbs Farm is Neil Dawson’s “Horizons,” which resembles a giant piece of corrugated iron atop a hill. While it may appear to be a computer-generated cartoon, astoundingly, Horizons is a real sculpture made of welded and painted steel, and it fits in perfectly with the cow-filled agricultural landscape of the farm. Also found on Gibbs Farm is Sol LeWitt’s “Pyramid,” a cluster of concrete blocks that form a perfect staircase for the sheep of the property. Anish Kapoor’s “Dismemberment” sculpture is a humungous tube with open ends on both sides, nestled in a slight dip in the farm’s rolling hills. Perhaps one of the most ingenious creations found at Gibbs Farm is the Electrum, the world’s largest Tesla coil, standing at four stories tall. On a leisurely walk through Gibbs Farm, visitors will be treated to an array of multi-story paper clips, a forest of 100 giant vertical lights, a bridge made out of cubes, a field of multi-colored squares, and even a life-sized, incredibly-realistic giraffe. Although Gibbs Farm is rarely open to the public and is little-known worldwide, it is truly one of New Zealand’s best-kept secret gems." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

If you ever get the chance to visit Gibbs farm-Go for it. Pack a picnic lunch and walk around the sculptures at your leisure, the view towards the Kaipara harbour and farmland are pleasing and the sculptures at different angles and distances appear to morph into something else. The exotic animals dotted around also make it more exciting, we were admiring an emu from afar, then we started back on our walk and it started to follow. Another exciting encounter, an emu was running and we were in its path, looked like it was coming straight for us when it quickly changed direction.

It was a fantastic experience, sun shining enables us to walk around, seeing every spectacular giant sculptures in different angles and watching some animals running wildly around, and to enjoy a picnic sold on food trucks at place (ravioli is a must-try!). A great art museum and zoo for family and couple trip, highly recommend.

Very cool. Lots of walking, maybe like 18 holes...but visually spectacular. Giraffes are definitely out of place, along with the large and varied art sculptures and installations.

Such a brilliant day and so beautifully kept. Lots of huge art structures and the brochure was informative with lots on it that described each. Well spent day off.

Great experience walking through the farm. It took approx 1:30 hours to complete. I expected many more sculptures but enjoyed it all the same. It would be great if they opened it up to the public on regular basis as the general ticket cost is $100 and up and the only way to visit is when charities book the venue. Yes the money goes to charity but with frequent visits allowed the farm could raise a lot more and still chose to donate a portion of proceeds. Also, for hire golf carts/buggies would be great too :-)

Gibbs Farm offers beautiful views of hills, water, and XXL sculptures. The alpacas are a highlight, and the grounds are nice but have plenty of animal droppings—wear shoes that can handle dirt. There’s one coffee truck and four portaloo. It’s best to arrive early for closer parking before the loop sculpture trail. Bring a picnic mat and lunch. 🥪 🦙 🦙

Amazing view with lots of cute animals. Staff member was friendly and provided some leaves for us to feed the giraffe. The walk is longer than expected, bring food and water! 😆 *booking is essential!

Yelp
I know it's a bit of a push to classify this as 'Auckland' but I'm including it because it's only a 45min drive from central Auckland (even less if you live on the North Shore) and it is one of the best days I've spent in a long time. Gibbs Farm is a private property, open only one day a month by prior appointment, showcasing the sculpture collection of Alan Gibbs, philanthropist and one of New Zealand's most successful businessmen. The farm, which takes 2-3 hours to walk around includes major works by Graham Bennett, Chris Booth, Daniel Buren, Bill Culbert, Neil Dawson, Marijke de Goey, Andy Goldsworthy, Ralph Hotere, Anish Kapoor, Sol LeWitt, Len Lye, Russell Moses, Peter Nicholls, Eric Orr, Tony Oursler, George Rickey, Peter Roche, Richard Serra, Kenneth Snelson, Richard Thompson, Leon van den Eijkel and Zhan Wang. And there are giraffes! Real live giraffes! And zebras, emus, llamas and bison. I was lucky enough to visit this sculpture park and I thoroughly recommend that you try to as well. Beautiful landscape combined with breathtaking international artwork - what more could you ask for!

Yelp
Never heard of Gibbs Farm before until a friend mentioned it but after researching into it, made an online booking to see it as I was intrigued. Only open once monthly from 10am-2pm, it is a private farm property with a collection of amazing, large-sized sculptures by a range of artists including Graham Bennett, Chris Booth, Daniel Buren, Bill Culbert, Neil Dawson, Marijke de Goey, Andy Goldsworthy, Ralph Hotere, Anish Kapoor, Sol LeWitt, Len Lye, Russell Moses, Peter Nicholls, Eric Orr, Tony Oursler, George Rickey, Peter Roche, Richard Serra, Kenneth Snelson, Richard Thompson, Leon van den Eijkel and Zhan Wang. Set on the coast at the Kaipara Harbour, it is about a 40 minute drive from the North Shore and is made up of a large area of rolling grass hills. Prepare to get walking as there are several sculptures dotted around the property that you need to climb up and down hills for. Bring a packed lunch, water, put on good shoes and enjoy the artworks as well as farm creatures. Such a great place!

Yelp
Had a seriously awesome day at Gibbs Farm, so much to see and do and totally free! Gibbs farm opens to the public once a month and all I did to secure my place was go onto their website and email the address provided saying what day I wanted to visit and how many people would be coming with me. It is a wee drive out to the Kaipara Coast but it's a beautiful drive so I really didn't notice it, I was too busy looking at all the scenery. When we got there soooo many other people were there also, but they handled it really well with plenty of parking, lots of signage as well as officials directing you. It is a decent walk around the farm so I made sure to wear exercise clothing and running shoes, which I was thankful for! I took a packed lunch and water as they don't offer food which is totally fair enough. The art is just incredible, such a breathtaking collection, not to mention the natural scenery and views and as though those weren't enough they also had lots of exotic animals like Giraffes, Alpacca and Ostriches! Please if you only attend one cultural event a year this just has to be it, I want to go again!
