The 25 Best Things to Do in Bermuda

"Once you’ve conquered the hill leading up to Gibb’s Hill Lighthouse, a cast-iron lighthouse built in 1844, you’re only part of the way to your ultimate destination. The view from the top of the hill itself is great, but the one from the top of the lighthouse’s 185 steps is even better: a panorama over the whole of the island, stretching east from Hamilton to Dockyard in the west, and from the Little Sound in the north to the South Shore and the Atlantic Ocean beyond. At the base of the lighthouse, in what used to be the lighthouse keeper’s quarters, a solid restaurant from the team behind Rustico in Flatts dishes out a varied menu of sandwiches, salads, and pizzas." - Katherine Cusumano

Gibbs Hill Lighthouse — Landmark Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"Tell us a bit about this place. What makes it historically significant? Originally constructed by Royal Engineers in 1846, Gibb’s Hill Lighthouse is the oldest cast iron lighthouse in the world. Once you ascend the 185-step spiral staircase, you'll be treated to a 360-degree panorama from atop an outdoor platform. Indeed, this 117-foot-tall, whitewashed Southampton landmark offers Bermuda’s best bird's-eye view, so get your camera ready and start climbing. Any standout features or must-sees? If you’re skittish about heights, there's still plenty to take in; after all, the lighthouse sits atop an eponymous hill about 245 feet above sea level, where you’ll be treated to views of the south shore, the City of Hamilton, the Great Sound, and the Royal Naval Dockyard. But those who do make the trek will be rewarded with something truly special. Spot landmarks like the bright pink Fairmont Southampton , white-roofed cottages galore, and, if you’re lucky, migrating whales. If we want a bit more guidance, are there any staff members on hand to help out? There are no guides here, but there are several exhibits about the lighthouse's construction placed intermittently as you climb. There's an especially interesting display about the light itself: a two-and-three-quarter-ton lens and  1,000-watt electric bulb that can be seen from ships up to 40 miles away and by airplanes cruising at 10,000 feet. What's the crowd like? Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, located about five minutes from Horseshoe Bay, gets lots of folks who’ve spent part of their day lounging on the beach. Don’t be surprised to see tourists with sandy toes. Does it meet expectations? There’s simply no better view in Bermuda. So why would you recommend fitting this into our Bermuda touristing schedule? This is a must-see spot for anyone fit enough to climb 185 stairs, and you won’t need much more than an hour to explore the exhibits and take in that view. If you’d like to stay a little longer, grab a meal at Tamarind, a casual Indian restaurant inside the base of the light, which is open for dinner Tuesday through Sunday and lunch on the weekends." - David LaHuta

Great views from the grounds and climbing to the top. Gift shop is cute and has plenty of souvenirs. 8 flights total, but the balcony was closed. If you have time go back for sunset or sunrise!

Reasonably cheap local attraction. The souvenirs in the gift shop are some of the lowest priced on the whole island. We took the #8 bus to the stop closest to Tribe Rd 2 and hiked up that road, which isn't really a road, there's a staircase and then a short wooded trail. You'll cross the railway trail and eventually pop out right at the Queen's view and the lighthouse. You could also take the #7 bus and get off near the Henry VIII restaurant and walk up from there. Walkable from The Reefs. Wasn't too hard to climb it, there are informational displays on every landing so you can stop and rest and read a little if needed. The steps are narrow. They won't let you go out on the exterior landing anymore. At least not as of summer 2025.

The walk up to the top of the lighthouse was great. As you make your way up there are areas with history of the lighthouse. The photos thru the different windows are beautiful, once at the top you can see the entire island of Bermuda. Best part of all is the gift shop, best prices and pretty good gifts and souvenirs for family and friends. If you like something sweet and refreshing; be sure to try their “ginger beer”.

Built in 1844 by Cottam and Hallen of Cornwall Road, Lambeth; in their works within sight of Waterloo Bridge Erected by the Royal Engineers, the Gibb's Hill Lighthouse is the taller of two lighthouses on Bermuda, and one of the first lighthouses in the world to be made of cast-iron Visited very first day as get off the cruise ship and hire private cab for sightseeing for a day. So visit this place as part of a tour. The view is excellent, a small gift shop, clean restrooms. I believe you can pay a couple of dollars to climb up to the top, but we didn’t able to go as time restrictions, The lady in the gift shop was very nice.

Best view of the islands! Gift shop prices very reasonable. Climbing the lighthouse is challenging if there are crowds as there is little room to turn around at the top.

Lovely place for view of the bermuda from the top. The view from the lighthouse itself is good but there are a lot of cables obstructing the view. The lighthouse looks beautiful. It’s ok for a sunset. I’m sure there are better places where to enjoy one. At the bottom of the steps there is the queens view that offers another beautiful spot to look at the view.

Nice place to visit while in Bermuda to learn about history. Balcony was closed to the public when we went but you can still go up the lighthouse and see through the windows.
