Gion Sushi Tadayasu

Came here for the lunch experience and it did not disappoint. The chef was so skilled and attentive. Each course was a masterpiece in its own right and we enjoyed them all. Highly recommend if you are in Kyoto to try it out.

The sushi was well prepared, ingredients were fresh and delicious. The omakase course included appetizers, 13 nigiri sushi, clam miso soup and dessert. There are a total of 12 counter seats. Reservation is required.

We booked the omakase experience expecting a chef’s curated journey, but unfortunately what we received was essentially just a sequence of sushi pieces without any explanation or interaction. One of the joys of omakase is understanding the chef’s choices — the seasonality, the sourcing, and the progression of flavors — and this element was missing. The fish itself was fresh and well-prepared, but without the storytelling, the experience felt incomplete for the price. Chef didn't speak English and c only deliver the full experience in Japanese. If you are are a foreigner , probably consider other places.

As 2 total foreigners who had our first ever sushi omakase, this shop totally blew us away! An absolute value for money considering this shop got 3 year of 1 michelin star ratings! (They lost it only this year I think). All other michelin shops would at least cost twice as much. The sushis were super fresh and tasty, we were served a total of 14 nigiris(including fugu which was a surprise!) + 3 other dishes. The chef was very friendly, he did not speak much English but they had 2 waitresses for the translation. I was a little overwhelmed at first but was settled in quickly due to the chill atmosphere. I tried to get there early as this is our first Omakase in Japan, and the shop did not open until exactly 12pm, so pls do time your arrival right! A group of 5 other foreigners came late for about 15 mins, but the chef got them the full course anyways. Don’t let the recent 1*(s) fool you, as you look deep enough, they all come from the same group of people, not sure what they are trying to do. Writing this review as I feel it was not fair for all the shop’s efforts to be bombarded like this.

The best sushi experience I’ve ever had. The atmosphere was out of this world in a tiny traditional restaurant in the famous Gion district. Some of the most unique fish you can’t find anywhere else in the world: baby eel, clam sushi, melt sperm, blood cockle. The chef was very inviting & watching him was watching art. Amazing & delicious!

This was one of the best omakase experiences I have had the pleasure of being a part of. The chef was very kind, and entertained us throughout the meal. The fish was all very fresh and delicious. The staff was attentive. My favorite part was he explained each dish to us and type of fish used

This was a genuinely wonderful experience! I came for the dinner course and got to try so many lovely pieces of sushi. I know there are a couple of reviews that say that this place discriminates against foreigners. I really didn't feel that at all. You should definitely make a reservation beforehand as they don't let walk-ins. The chef and his assistant were extremely kind and always answered when I asked what fish was being served! The interior was very beautiful and overall I left feeling satisfied and happy!

I and my wife went here in long time ago, but we still have good memories of the sushi course. The chef is pretty serious in making sushi with 2 different kinds of rice, but they are friendly talking with you as well. The service by a girl is very good. She is doing always busy, but carefully with smile. Thanks so much, and see you next time. cheers 🍻

Fresh simple nigiri All prepared tableside. Chef does a good job creating an intimate experience. It is a bit of a slow meal as it is just one chef preparing each piece for everyone, one piece at a time. The giant sword he used to cut the fish looked fun. Definitely better than any omakase experience in the states. The soy sauce is applied liberally which I liked. Also freshly grated wasabi hits different.

I cannot tell you the name of this place. i simply do not speak the language and do not pretend to. I do however use google lens or google translate which is amazing. Not instant, but it works. Anyway as I read through the menu with my handy phone, i was able to order quite a meal. I had zero expectations and they were met! Food was quickly served, fresh and it was delicious. Drinks were served a plenty. My bill was minor. I thought it was great value. I honestly had no idea it was a Michelin restaurant. Maybe I got lucky because I walked in and got a table for 3. It could be because I was rocking some Onitsuka Tiger custom shoes, nippon made. Not to brag, but i am. Anyway back to eating here. Again, maybe I was lucky. I really wasn't dressed for the restaurant, but I was still treated extremely well. Sake selection was great. We had 3 bottles. They recommended, so no idea what they were, but they went well down perfect. I will say that the wasabi was out of this world. Place was not as busy as i thought, but then again, that is common in Japan. They do not fill their restaurants. They rather have enough staff to handle clientele than to be overwhelmed, which I appreciate. I allowed the sushi chef to deal, so I trusted what he dealt and he did not steer me wrong. Highly recommend.

The food was fine but it was by far the WORST omakase experience I've ever had. There were 2 other customers besides our group and the chef loudly engaged with them the whole night in Japanese, he barely paid any attention to us. The other 2 customers were very loud, the older man was drunk and the woman gave escort vibe. Only noise canceling headphones would've made it better. Honestly so shocked by the whole unpleasant experience.

Pocket Concierge is the reservation website for this restaurant. This website is terrible, and their customer service is terrible. I tried to make a reservation for 2 for the same day, and it ended up giving me a reservation for two days later (the website is confusing). I tried to cancel my reservation, and it charged me 50% because it was within 72 hours. 29,700 Yen wasted on an innocent mistake. I tried contacting them several times, and all they did was say "our cancellation policy say this blah blah blah." Hiding behind their cancellation policy like cowards. I didn't make a reservation and then cancel it weeks later. I tried to make a same-day reservation, and immediately cancelled it when I realized it was the wrong date. This goes against the intent behind the cancellation policy. Pocket Concierge should be ashamed of themselves.

English Menu: Yes (For Drinks) English Speaking: Low-Med Delicious Michelin star sushi restaurant. You'll need to book reservations. I used pocket concierge and it shows you what options you have for meals. Lunch is way cheaper than dinnertime so we went for that. Using google maps, you can easily navigate to this restaurant. I'm going to attach what the restaurant front looks like. The restaurant seats about a total of 12. Two sushi chefs were working for maybe 4 people each. People slowly piled in near the end. Because you can choose your meal through pocket concierge, no real ordering happens except for drinks. I believe our chef was Sato San? He was able to chat with us a little bit in English. The atmosphere feels very sophisticated with dim lighting. Every nigiri piece was had was perfection. The temperature and amount of flavor was just right. Sato San was also pretty comedic when talking with all his guests. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here. Ambiance - 5 / Service - 5 / Food - 5 / Price - 5

This is now one of my top sushi places. If I ever come back to Kyoto I'm definitely coming back here! For a Michelin restaurant, the price for lunch is super affordable and not to mention how amazing the quality was for each piece. We even got to experience fishes that we would've never tried in the states like ice fish and shirako - which surprisingly was pretty tasty. When we first got there I initially thought our chef was stern and super serious, but as soon as he started he warmed up to us and even joked around with us despite the language barrier. The place itself is small and can only seat 12 people at a time. When trying to locate the restaurant, we accidentally walked past it, but so long you know how the outside looks, it wasn't hard to find. Overall, I highly recommend this place and wish to go back already!

Phenomenal experience-- the best sushi I've ever had. I got reservations through Pocket Concierge and our lunch was flawless from start to finish. I got to try sushi that I probably would've never been able to try in the U.S., including baby eel, monkfish liver, ice fish, and soft cod roe. I had the best uni I've ever tasted here, and the yellowtail belly was special. Also glad to finally watch real horseradish being prepared and to taste it. It was a bit difficult to understand our sushi chef, but we got by. We understood half of what the other said, and there was a lot of nodding and smiling-- it added to the experience of being in a foreign country. It was an elevated experience, but not stuffy. Our chef was a good sport and even took a photo with us after the meal. Omakase lunch with small plates was about $170 per person. It was the most expensive meal I've ever paid for, but it was worth it. Lunch is considerably cheaper than dinner. Get your reservations in early on Pocket Concierge. Gion Tadayasu earned its Michelin star recently.
