Stanley Tucci’s Travel Show Is About Italy—But He Really Wants to Go Back to Iceland

"Six years ago, I traveled to this little town in Iceland called Egilsstaðir to film a show called Fortitude. Part of my attraction to the role was the location. We flew to the town, which is about an hour's flight from Reykjavík, in January, and stayed in this very boxy, very cookie-cutter hotel, and I thought, Oh, my God, what am I gonna do here! But there was this old farm about three quarters of a mile away, across a field, that had been turned into a hotel—Gistihúsið Lake Hotel. The same family has owned it since the late 1800s. There I was, walking across this field and looking at the northern lights, going into this more than one-hundred-year-old farmhouse, and eating an incredible meal of reindeer and fresh langoustines. It was just magnificent."

Nice location as part of our route 1 tour. We had a more spacious than expected room. The toilet and shower were separate which was another unexpected reason plus, but not so much places to put things in the shower. The sitting area had comfortable chairs to lounge and the windows added a lot of nice light (but also good blackout shades for later). We were on an upper floor and the elevator for luggage was slow and often in used but did the job. The restaurant had a similar menu for breakfast and dinner as many of the hotels we stayed at, but with great service, well prepared, a reasonable selection and quality ingredients. We did reserve our table in advance for dinner which is recommended as we saw other groups arriving who had not and they were not able to eat there or had to wait an hour or more. The hotel is located next to a working farm so align with the excellent view you will have the related smells. The rooms were well maintained, clean, and with a bit of design flair. We enjoyed ourselves and would stay again. The service was attentive and even at times funny in a good way.

The hotel is ideally located to explore the East of Iceland and there is a variety of hiking around within a short drive . We wanted to concentrate on this area hence why we based ourselves here.||We stayed in a deluxe room which included access to the spa otherwise there is a separate charge. The room was very comfortable, serviced daily and certainly met expectations for this category of residence. The bed is very comfortable and there are excellent black out curtains in the room. ||Breakfast is good, herrings, salmon, peppers with a selection of seeds , dried fruit so I was more than content. The buttermilk here is excellent as were the chia slices ( my name for these). ||We had dinner here twice and the ingredients were of a high quality, dishes well presented and were extremely tasty. Wine selection small yet decent. |Happy hour of course.||Plenty of parking available.||Easy walk into town for facilities.||Fabulous stay and would recommend.

Only stayed one night but it was a pleasant stay. Staff were lovely and patient when we were locked out of our room and then set the alarm off in the spa because we misunderstood the directions! We booked a queen room with lake view and it was lovely. Everything it was advertised to be. Breakfast was great with both hot and cold items s. Mini fridge in room was helpful and hotel provided ice for our in-room use. Would stay here again. We ordered a lunch box to go and it had two very good sandwiches and plenty of other items to keep us going on our drive the following day including the most delicious chocolate coconut ball!

Beautiful family-run, lakeside property along the Ring Road. Make a dinner reservation as soon as you arrive (best food we’ve enjoyed this trip). Easy access to Vok Baths—laid back soaking in exceptional Icelandic setting, close to nature.

Only stayed at this hotel during our Iceland visit. Nice view of the lake and comfortable bed, pillows and shower. The staff were friendly enough for what we needed. We ate at the restaurant in the hotel and I'll write a review for that in another post. It was very good and we enjoyed our meal there. Would recommend hotel and restaurant if in the area.

Centrally located close to domestic airport, gas station and supermarket. Hotel appears to be converted from an old building but is nicely maintained with a charming lobby. Room size is bigger than other Iceland hotels. Shower is only separated from toilet by a shower curtain, so bathroom would get a bit wet but not a big issue. Both dinner and breakfast are good. Better reserve for dinner as it gets busy. O sure washing machine is handy, although may need to wait a bit as there is only one machine. Staff are generally helpful. Overall a pleasant stay.

This is a well located and historic property. The dinner menu is solid and the food very nicely prepared and presented. The buffet breakfast is varied and plentiful but, at this price point, guests should not be expected to set their own place settings at breakfast and use cocktail napkins for meal service. As with all higher end lodging places in Iceland, the facilities are well maintained and spotlessly clean.

We had an amazing stay here for our first ever visit to Iceland. Could only stay 2 nights as we were doing the whole ring road tour. From friendly check in to great service and food throughout you can see the passion they have for putting customers at the heart of their business. The food was absolutely incredible and we happily ate here both evenings with stellar service topping it off. A great breakfast selection to suit all needs so absolutely zero complaints.
