Glaciarium – El Calafate, Argentina - Gastro Obscura

"Just outside the trekking and climbing hotspot of El Calafate in Argentine Patagonia sits the Glaciarium, a modern glacier interpretation center that’s also home to the world’s only bar made entirely of glacial ice. The small town of El Calafate (pop. 6,143) is a hotspot for trekkers, climbers, nature lovers and adventurers who come to explore the nearby Los Glaciares National Park, a region of Magellanic subpolar forests, west Patagonian steppes and, as the name suggests, glaciers. About 30 percent of the national park is covered by ice from the massive ice cap located in this part of the Andes, which feeds almost 50 glaciers in the region. One of the most famous glaciers, Perito Moreno, is located within the park, about 40 miles west of El Calafate. All in all, it’s a fantastic place to do some glacier spotting and if you want to learn more about glaciers, you can head to the Glaciarium, a modern glacier interpretation center just outside of El Calafate. Here, multimedia exhibitions explain how ice is formed and how glaciers move and shape their surroundings. They delve back to the origins of the Universe and the various glaciations on Earth, and cover the early explorers and scientists whose research gave us a far better understanding of the processes involved. You can also see a large 3D model of the Southern Patagonia Ice-Field and the numerous glaciers in the region. If all this sounds a little too serious, you need not to fear. Even the least scientifically-curious person has a reason to visit the Glaciarium: the Glaciobar. Billed as the world’s only bar made completely from glacial ice, including the seats, tables, and the glasses, the Glaciobar is so cold that you can only enter after donning the capes, gloves, and boots provided by the bar’s hardy staff. Even then, you can only stay in the bar for 20 minutes or risk becoming a permanently frozen fixture. Know Before You Go The Glaciarium is located about four miles to the west of central El Calafate, just off the road that leads out to the Perito Moreno Glacier. It’s open every day from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The entrance fee is 480 Argentine pesos ($11 US). Entrance to the Glaciobar is 300 pesos ($7 US), which includes a drink. There’s a free shuttle bus from the center of El Calafate to the Glaciarium; it normally leaves from 1 de Mayo, between Av Libertador and Roca, but best to check that in advance with your hotel." - Tony Dunnell

Very informative, can't believe I almost skipped this! Amazing views from the area, cool free tours, tickets is $20 dlls or so and $10 extra for the frozen bar that includes a drink. Staff was knowledgeable and fun. Make sure you visit before or after your glacier visit.

Interesting museum to learn about glaciers and be ready for your adventure on lake argentino! However the museum is “vintage”, I’ll recommend a guided visit instead reading numerous panel to enjoy better the place! Ice bar activity is fun, but not so unique.

An informative and modern museum with both Spanish and English information at each section. We bought combined glacarium and ice bar tickets for 30,000 ARS each which includes a drink of your choice (it’s freezing in there so you only spend 20 minutes inside). You can buy the combined tickets on arrival to the museum. There is also a video about the Perito Moreno glacier that goes for about 10 minutes that runs approx every hour which is worth watching. We got the 12pm free shuttle to the museum and returned on the 2.30pm one. Would recommend lining up earlier for the 12pm one as it’s the first shuttle to the museum and can fill up

Comprehensive museum on glaciars and related expeditions, with a very fun ice bar at -15 degrees

Really interesting and informative displays and models about snow, ice and glaciers. Also the history of Glaciology and the pioneer explorers. Amazing films about the Moreno glacier and the arch collapsing after blocking the lake! The ice bar is fun and worth the extra 3000. (Combined ticket 10 000). Gift shop and cafe on site too. Definitely worth the visit when in town. Free shuttle from the centre (see location on Google maps)

We had a great time at the Glaciarium museum. One of the highlights was the stunning views from outside the museum of Lago Argentino and the surrounding mountains. The ice bar, where everything is made of ice, is a must-visit; although you're only allowed 20 minutes inside, it's just enough time as everyone was cold and ready to leave by then. The museum itself feels a bit dated but is still adequate. Learning about glaciers was fascinating, with exhibits covering glacier science, the history of explorers, climate change, and Perito Moreno. The movies, though not in 4K, were still impressive, especially the footage of Perito Moreno calving and rupturing. The gift shop offers a good variety of items, and the staff, particularly in the ice bar, were friendly and helpful. We visited in July and nearly had the place to ourselves.

Decent museum. You have to come prepared to read a lot in order to learn. Not good for the young and/or impatient. The movies in the two theatres were ok but thematically the same (the collapse of the ice bridge). We had also ordered tickets to the glacier bar but later realized we had a time slot 90 min from when we entered. There is not enough to do for 90 min and we ended up leaving without seeing it. Overall it felt affordable (USD $10 / person incl the bar).

An excellent museum to learn all about glaciers, snow fields, early explorers, and climate impact. Great displays and films too. All signs in Spanish and English. Guided tour in Spanish. We did not do the Ice Bar.
