Came here just to try roesti (essentially hash browns with swiss cheese in the middle) and enjoyed it but found it to be kind of bland. It was interesting to try though, and they served quite a large portion size. Overall, even though it was pretty busy and crowded, the bartender was kind and helpful but the food did take quite a while. Recommend stopping here to try the European specialties and beer selection while you're in town, just don’t think it was for me (as a vegetarian and not much of a beer drinker).

We stopped in for lunch on a whim today after hiking at some nearby state parks. Their dining room was full, so we sat at the bar. We ordered grilled cheese and the special (a prime rib sandwich). Food, prices, service were all great. Bartender Steve was attentive and kind and gave me this cool postcard as we were leaving. Definitely worth a stop.

This Swiss town was news to us! We were passing near so we picked this on right off for fondue. And yep, right at noon on a Thursday, we had a fired up pot of cheese- fun right? We may have leftover fondue for a week, but it was entertaining. Husband had an amazing looking meat and veg dish in a puff pastry. I had a wedge salad. Blue cheese was great of course. We had been up in the Dells for about a week and this was the best knew we had the whole time. Everything was fresh, well prepared, and flavorful. Really good food and nice folks doing the things. Apologize for not taking pictures before we dug into it lol.

I highly recommend this place for a real Swiss food experience. It's an older building with lots of wood. We loved the cheese fondue. Kettle and dishes all looked old fashioned. The wiener schnitzel was the best I've ever had. I definitely recommend the potatoes they're crispy fresh hash browns with Swiss cheese inside. I didn't have any cheese curds i saw them, and they looked big and amazing. The only downside is it's a small place and if it's full, it's kind of loud. My friend and I felt like old ladies, "What did you say? Can you repeat that?" 😆

Google
A very enjoyable meal. Cheese curds were perfect, nice golden brown, gooey center, right out of the fryer. Portion size huge. Personally, I prefer a more flavorful beer batter, but this was pretty great all the same. The perch (Fri. Fish fry) was also perfectly fried, golden, and good fish flavor that was not overpowered by the batter. Red cabbage the best. What stole the show was the roesti, simple golden hash browns infused with Swiss cheese. The ambiance is old school WI. Tavern, unpretensious, warm, and worn, just nice and comfy. So why only 4 stars? Other than the roesti and red cabbage, which exceeded expectations, the entrées were on par with other good places I have eaten. (I've eaten around the world. Including Michelin stared establishments, so it kind of has to really wow me) So 4 stars is by no means a negative and gets my recommendation with no reservations whatsoever.

We were excited to try the new place for us and newer dishes. Food didn't have too many flavors. Service was not too good at all.

Google
Drove two hours, especially for this place. Love the schnitzel, and the roesti was fabulous. Why it got 4 stars across the board. The cheese fondue was ok, kinda bland needed more flavor or different cheese?

Google
Amazing food prepared well from quality ingredients with huge portion sizes. We had: Pastetli - amazing! Roetsi - amazing! Pork Schnitzel sandwich - so smokey flavored, amazing! The only thing that wasn't to my liking was the German potato salad. I've had quite a few of that style (in Germany...not the mayo/mustard/egg style) but did not like it. Service was wonderful. Very friendly and attentive. Prices are a touch steep but for the quality and portion sizes I don't think they are unreasonable. I will 100% be going back. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Second time around does not disappoint. We had the same thing the pastetli with the roesti potatoes - my previous review stands. My mom had the prime rib sandwich. The size of that beef was basically a full dinner not a sandwich. The horseradish it came with has just the right bite. Prices are reasonable. I feel like I'm in Switzerland. What more can I ask for?

Alex D.

Yelp
Cheese. Oh, the cheese! This is a smaller joint, so get there early, or wait (they are so worth the wait). The atmosphere is cozy and the staff were all super friendly. It was very clear the food was being made fresh. We had the fondue, cheese curds, and prime rib sandwich. Honestly, we were pretty full on the fondue before the rest of our food came out because it was so stinking good. Everything was amazing. Bonus points for having a great kid's menu so my little one could snack on pancakes while we polished off 3 pounds of cheese.

Yelp
The little Swiss themed restaurant gave a real good vibe. The server was very welcoming & she helped decide our dish. Her suggestion was really good. We went for the dinner specialty, a sandwich & hot chocolate. A special mention to their soup of the day, beef stroganoff. Oh my, one of the best we've tasted ever. The dinner specialty, Pastetli, was excellent. The puff was crunchy, yet melted in mouth straightaway. The sauce was really delicious. We tried their pork schnitzel sandwich and it was equally good.

Yelp
Stopped in for a drink on a Friday before the dinner rush. We used to come here quite a bit over the years, but it's been a while. We asked to sit at the bar and sat behind the server stand. Unfortunately, the server repeatedly smacked into my mom's seat even though there was plenty of room. Wasn't a very comfortable vibe. We ordered a tap New Glarus beer and a vodka cranberry and were charged $17 ($8 and $9 respectively). When we asked to confirm, we were just told "tourist prices". Surprised we could even stop the bartender as he was busy tossing treats and ice cubes to a dog that was in the bar. I expect those prices in Milwaukee but not in New Glarus. The place is still plenty busy, even before dinner, but I'm not eager to go back considering that's how prices and service are like here these days.

Sho R.

Yelp
I was visiting New Glarus, and decided to dine in here. The menu was full of Swiss dishes. I started off with Cheese fondue. It was enough for 4-6, may be more if you are not a very cheese person. It was good. Roesti is a nice swiss twist on hash brown. It is a hashbrown pancake with a layer of cheese. Also was slightly oily. Perch filet sandwich was my favorite item though. Waitress voluntarily split it into 2 for us to share. Perch was fried crispy. There were some small bones though. Kids chicken strips and french fries were fried nice and crisp.

Christina H.

Yelp
I visited this restaurant with a friend for purely nostalgic purposes. My second home growing up was in New Glarus and wanted to visit a place that reminded me of visiting my grandparents. Highly recommend the Glarner Stube for an authentic Swiss style meal. We opted for a cheese fondue and shared a reuben and finished our meal with a perfect slice of hot chocolate cake! We got lucky to get a table as we arrived at 12:02 and the place was already busy! Wonderful food and service! Ask for DJ!

Erik R.

Yelp
You go here for the Swiss fondue which was excellent! Plenty of bread and vegetables for dipping and reasonable price as well. Also, the wedge salad was good and you have your choice of a few house made dressings and I would recommend the ranch..very tasty. All New Glarus beers on draft so if you like the from this brewery, you will be pleasantly surprised. FYI, Staghorn Oktoberfest is now on draft which can be hard to find. Enjoy!

Yelp
One of the main reasons we always visit NG! It's one of our families top 5 places to eat authentic meals. The fondue is always top notch and the small, quaint dining area is always warm and welcoming. This trip, me and the wife had a couples weekend and enjoyed the bar. Everyone was friendly and the bartender was extra entertaining tonight. She brought us into the conversations like we were just another local. Very fun! Top notch food, fair price for the quality that always exceeds expectations. Counting the days we can make it back! Wiener schnitzel was perfectly cooked and the Roosti ( sorry if I messed that one up, the Swiss hasbrowns) was perfectly cooked. My wife had the prime rib that was on special and that was equally great as well!

Yelp
Love this place. It is some of the best food in the Midwest. I have travelled 5 hours out of my way just to eat here. Ignore the haters. It's a small restaurant that gets full quick. Sometimes that means it can be a bit difficult to navigate and may feel a bit claustrophobic. The bathroom is small. WORTH IT!! That's not what you're here for. It's the food! The sausage is outstanding and the quality of the mustard they serve with it is equally as good. The Roesti is a unique dish that will be hard to find elsewhere and the Swiss cheese they use in it is wonderful. And don't forget the soup. Unbelievably rich and might be mistaken for gravy. Always has good beer on tap. I will gladly drive a few hours north to stop here. Go now! It's worth it!

Marc R.

Yelp
where do I start! The bartender at first was a little put off as I arrived during the lunch rush but his personalty came through. Wonderful traditional food with local charm! Hate to see this more popular. Even local celebrity, Zeus graced us at the bar!

L K.

Yelp
What a disappointment. My husband and I had not been here since the pandemic and thought it would be a treat after a long hard week. We waited at the bar for our table, sadly the drinks were watered down. For dinner we indulged in the fondue which was so overly salty. For main courses I had the Wiener schnitzel. It was charred on the back and was so over cooked it was hard to chew. Then to top it off my husband bit down on a piece of plastic in one of his Swiss meatballs. Clearly quality has gotten away from this once favorite restaurants.

Richard C.

Yelp
Terrific lunch. Check out the daily specials and do not pass on the Roesti. It was wonderful. This is a place to leave your diet outside! I'm sure if you have a great deal of discipline you can find something here too eat, but trying food that is truly Swiss is a treat, and not very dietetic. The beer cheese soup was absolutely wonderful too!

Lexi Y.

Yelp
I've been coming here nearly every year for Father's Day since I was in high school. I'm 31 now. I love this place so much

Roger W.

Yelp
Great food, cool small town setting...partnered with one of their local festivals...this is a serious winner!

Yelp
My friend and I wanted some Swiss-inspired food and Glarner Stube didn't disappoint. Old world charm with the proprietor on site to make sure everything runs smoothly. A mainstay in New Glarus with a bustling business serving both locals and out of towners. The prime rib and Reuben sandwiches were good and we enjoyed their German potato salad which is vinegar, not mayonnaise-based. So if you're in New Glarus go get "Stubed". We did!

Jeff C.

Yelp
When in New Glarus I am told you have not been until you have visited Glarner Stube! This restaurant/bar was very intimidate and cozy and felt like a true local place that was just really inviting. A fun fact- New Glarus Brewery will give you a token to get a free mini beer to use at the establishments downtown to drive up business and get folks to try the local spots! The cheese fondue is why I came and the fish fry is why I stayed. Both were great options and very satisfying. I have tried to make it my mission to get an old fashioned at all places in Wisconsin so I failed and didn't get one here but I plan to return and can update! Definitely a must if visiting the brewery. Pro tip: be prepared to wait, the bar is cool to hang out at and the staff and locals will more than likely get to know you as well!

Yelp
It had been years since we had eaten at the Glaner Stube - so long ago that back then they still had the giant urinal (with its own postcard!). We were in New Glarus on a recent Friday afternoon and we stopped in to see if we could get a reservation for that evening. They do not take them but warned us to come before 5pm if we want a table without a wait. Since we had plans in Madison that night we grabbed a table by 4:30pm! Indeed the place was packed by 5pm. I think I had a beer to start but the main attraction was the Friday fish fry. Two had the cod, I had the perch and one had the perch sandwich. The price for the perch dinner was pretty high but the serving was huge. Too much actually. All of the food was delicious. The fish fry was very light and beer battered - my preference. The side of German potato salad was very good but a bit different with much more liquid. The red cabbage good but tart. The rosti, which is an up-charge, was excellent with cheese baked into the center. Nothing like having two potato dishes as sides! The servers were very helpful and kept things moving. Highly recommended!

Yelp
My boyfriend and I were at a hotel for my birthday and just found a cute place in town. The outside of the town is cute, but the inside of this place is dark and doesn't feel welcoming. We sat down and had a weird vibe. you could see right into the kitchen and it didn't look clean at all. We decided to order the food was good. Service wasn't too bad, but there was a server with mickey mouse pajamas on....not what you want to see when going to a restaurant.

Lori C.

Yelp
Hit this place on a previous trip and made it a have to stop on our return journey. OMG get the cheese curds, fresh wisconsin cheddar and a light breading with an out of this world sauce accompanying. I had probably the best primevrib sandwich I've ever had. Not small slices of prime rib, but a whole piece beautifully marbled and seasoned.be sure to get the roesti. Hash browns with Swiss cheese inside. A friend ordered the sauerkraut as a side and I had to order some to take home. It's delicious sauerkraut, just tart enough, but not overly tangy and comes in a mustard cream sauce. Unbelievable. The venue looks like places I was in in Switzerland and the staff is fun and helpful.

Andrea P.

Yelp
Excellent food and service Large selection of New Glarus beers. Good shopping near by.

Yelp
Our family has been going to this restaurant for over 15 years. It used to be a real treat. Our last couple of visits have been lackluster but we keep holding out hope for a return to quality. Our visit yesterday may have been our last. I'll start with the worst-- the food. They had no salads available. One waitress claimed the cooler was broken. The other waitress was telling people that they were getting ready for the holiday shutdown (which was 3 full days away). My wife ordered the bone in ribeye medium rare. It arrived cooked past well done. I ordered the tenderloin cooked to medium. It came out raw in the center and flash burned on the outside. Backing up to our arrival-- the place was fairly empty so we paused to enjoy a drink at the bar. We ordered a couple of old fashioneds. The young lady behind the bar was clearly very new because she didn't know how to charge us. The drinks were terrible. I don't object to new people learning but apparently her trainer was off to the side allowing her to fail. I'm not sure what happened at this formerly great restaurant. I hope they find the path back to quality soon.

Sara T.

Yelp
This place is amazing! We were in town for a fest but we were dying to try this place. We went into the bar and grabbed some beers....they told us we could order in the bar area BUT only appetizers. We were interested in a meal and also the dining room was so cute we really wanted to sit in there so we waited a while for a table but boy was it worth it! We just split the Wiener Schnitzel dinner served with sauerkraut and hash browns with cheese. HEAVENLY!! Not even kidding. It was more than enough for 2 and we actually brought some left overs home but AMAZING! We can't wait to try this place again.

Elaine B.

Yelp
The corned beef sandwich with the red cabbage was absolutely phenomenal!! The service was great as well. When we walked in the bar was packed but we were seated in the back restaurant area right away. Highly recommend !

Jude J.

Yelp
Lovely historical location in the heart of town. The Swiss Rösti was perfect! (A lot thicker than what I've had in Switzerland, but I'm not complaining! I ate as much as I could and took the rest home) Amazing friendly staff. Really good beers on tap. Their soup had me drooling, very tasty. Kudos to the chef and staff/owners.

Thomas K.

Yelp
The Glarner Stube is a special place ! It is small and when busy it is really small ! But, the food is wonderful and plenty ! Not inexpensive but you will take food home ! When in New Glarus, one just has to go there !

Teri C.

Yelp
The food is absolutely delicious. We have had the fondue, Ruben and chicken sandwich.

Tim F.

Yelp
The Stube is a great place to have great food and drink while in New Glarus. Great service in an old world atmosphere.

Dan P.

Yelp
Fantastic dinner can't wait to bring the wife. See you in December for the fondue. Thanks for the great service

Jessica M.

Yelp
If you're looking for a fun place to grab a Swiss meal, then look no further! We came here on a Sunday night following some wine tasting and started off with some cheese curds. They were very lightly breaded and served with peppercorn ranch and ketchup. I would compare them to a grilled cheese sandwich - melted and and delicious! After that, I had a prime rib sandwich, and others had a portabello burger, pork schnitzel, and sauerbraten. Most of us also had rosti, which was hashbrowns with cheese. Honestly, I could have just had the rosti and been happy - slightly cheesy potato goodness!! Overall, the sandwiches were reasonably priced at around $12 while the mains were considerably more expensive - between $20 and $40.

Frank V.

Yelp
Somewhat pricey... But, what isn't today? Good quality meals supported by an attentive & friendly staff. Wiener Schnitzel special with red cabbage was tasty. So too the sausage platter. The prime rib steak sandwich special was tasty and reasonably priced. Both dinner or lunch for two: $80(+/-)

Becca P.

Yelp
We loved the Swiss decor and friendly atmosphere. Our group of 4 loved the Swiss fondue and we added the veggie plate along with the bread for dipping. Our lunch meals were a large portion and great price!

Scott S.

Yelp
We had an amazing meal last time we were there. The Rosti and the Wiener schnitzel were outstanding.

Hugo D.

Yelp
I am no expert but they have the best fried cheese curds that I have ever had. Consider them a must.

Ken M.

Yelp
We got takeout and heated things up at home. The fondue was fun but very starched; I usually prefer a more cheesy, less starchy approach. The Rösti (fried potato hash) had good potatoes and cheese, but benefitted from an egg we fried at home --- would have been nice to order that version. The inside and the food definitely reminded me of Switzerland, though the styrofoam takeout containers didn't. I'd love to go back some time when it's easier to eat inside.

Rebecca S.

Yelp
The BEST place to visit, we drive from Madison just to stop in here. Favorite things to order: bowl of beef (tender beef with horseradish dipping sauce) -- it's like a Swiss twist on fondue -- cheese curds (melty cheese surrounded by a fluffy beer batter coating), Wiener schnitzel (a must, it will blow your mind) and tack on a side of a rösti (giant hash-brown meets Swiss cheese= deliciousness). Impossible to leave here hungry!!

Brandy W.

Yelp
Soooooooo good!!! Highly recommend. So much food so split if you can!! Wonderful service!

Mark I.

Yelp
I used to love coming here with my grandmother (who lived in New Glarus) back in the 80s and 90s. They always knew who she was and made us feel like royalty. The prices were great and the food was amazing. It was at this location that my uncle announced to the family he was getting married. My brother and I would frequent here quite often on our yearly trips to New Glarus. So as you can see, I have quite the history here. However, over the years the prices have gotten a bit out of hand. Yes, honestly I will still come here and pay those prices, but it seems a bit much these days. I will say that the service is always top notch and the food is as well. Get the cheese fondue if you have an appetite! And check out the world's largest urinal. If you don't get to see it there is a postcard you can buy, LOL!

Amy M.

Yelp
Next time you are in New Glarus you should give quaint Swiss place a go. You must put the Pork Schnitzel sandwich on your list of things to try. It is so tender and full of good flavor. And for certain you MUST order the Roesti to share between at least 4 people. Looks like a giant fluffy hash-brown except it is stuffed with Swiss cheese. MmmMmm good! Before you leave be sure to "go" in the biggest urinal in the Midwest.

Susan J.

Yelp
We drove about two hours from our home to Glarner Stube. When we arrived there was a note posted on the door that they were closed due to a staffing shortage. We were disappointed because we wanted to treat our 83 year old sister. We wouldn't have made the trip if something had been posted on their website that they were closed. Yes, it is worth the 2 hour drive for their food! My review is based on my last meal there. We had brought our own gluten free Shar deli bread and they made our ruebens with it. Their Swiss cheese stuffed potatoes are delicious. Next time we'll call first to confirm they are open.

Greg B.

Yelp
A small little jem in New Glarus WI a Swiss town The food is authentic Swiss and a symphony of flavors. The rosti potato's are a must (potatoes Swiss cheese onion butter OMG delious) On the weekends check in early as they don't take reservations.

Christina W.

Yelp
We tried to eat dinner here after a day of skiing but we were turned away because we did not have reservations. Yes it was a Saturday night. But where do visitors find this information about needing reservations? I don't see it here on Yelp. Maybe we will try again next time we are up in this town.

Matt H.

Yelp
The red Rueben is fantastic! I mean everything we had (normal Rueben, cheesy chicken tortilla soup, "authentic" German potato salad) was good. But I've. Ever had a "red" Rueben before. Now I think it's going to be my go-to. It's just red cabbage kraut, but what a great taste! And the potato salad is sooo vinegary and delicious. I drank the juice it was so good. Plus having spotted cow in New Glarus just seems like a rite of passage of some sort, so we did that too. Trust me it's a great stop. And get the Strudel too, you'll be happy you did.

Stu F.

Yelp
Can't begin to express my frustration. We made reservations to stay in town and everything was planned around dinner here. We called ahead on Friday night and was told the kitchen would be closed by 7:30 so we ate before coming to town and planned Saturday dinner here. Because they do not take reservations For a party of four people we expected to wait when we arrived and were ok with that. Because of their early closing of the kitchen 8:00 we arrived at 6:30. There was a sign on the door to turn away anyone arriving due to no longer taking seating for dinner. How do you have dinner here if there are no reservations and 6:30 is too late to wait? Went in anyway hoping that with an explanation an exception would be made. I explained I booked two nights in town for my family which was an $800 investment which was centered around our dinner at this establishment along with a day in the town. That along with the fact we tried the previous night but we're told of the early closing and not accepting reservations . She didn't care, didn't want to hear my issue and said there was nothing that could be done. Piss on this town and this restaurant. Apparently they have enough business

Alexis K.

Yelp
Great food! Cheese fondue was amazing and so was the NY strip steak with peppercorn sauce! Cute, small place. Nice and homey!

Jack B.

Yelp
Second visit to New Glarus, decided to dine at New Glarus Hotel but upon arrival told there was a 45 minute wait. At first we considered waiting but after seeing the delay was poor and lifeless staffing we ventured across the street to Glarner Stube. I want to thank the hotel staff for their lifeless approach for business as we found a true gem at Glarner Stube. They were packed with customers however seated us immediately. Our server Elyse expertly served or wonderfully prepared food. Recommend the house pork sandwich. Brats. Potato salad, red cabbage and for dessert tiramisu . Don't waste your time at the hotel and dine at Glarner Stube

Nancy G.

Yelp
Every time we visit New Glarus, we try to hit a different bar/dining establishment. This time, Glarner Stube. It's definitely old school, and a little on the dark side, with lots of vintage looking decor and gigantic cow bells hanging from the ceiling. Seriously, the one over the bar is as big as a human head, if not larger! We sat at the bar and the service was fairly quick. The bartender was nice and although he answered any questions we had, he wasn't very talkative, even to the regulars. Everything on the menu sounded delicious, but I went with the special of the day, the prime rib sandwich. I don't normally do beef, but it just sounded so good! A fair sized slab of meat on a hoagie type bun, served with a small dish of horseradish cream spread, and your choice of sides. I opted for fries, which, by the way, were outstanding! The sandwich was the same...I took one bite and was very happy that I didn't get the schnitzel sandwich (hubs got that and it was very good, I just think mine was better). The meat was juicy and tender, not at all rubbery. Combined with the horseradish sauce, OMG, there are no words! I wasn't feeling boozy, so I just got a coke. It tasted a little weird, honestly, like they mixed it with diet, or like it was a generic coke. They have a full bar and it has everything you could possibly want, in terms of booze, and the beers are mostly New Glarus brews. We have a few other places to visit in town yet, but we will definitely be coming back to Glarner Stube. Delicious!!!! 15/2019

Shari W.

Yelp
I tried to love this place - we took a day trip up to Epic & Cave of Mounds before back 2 school - took long way home through New Glarus to see f we could find something to eat in the funky little town - reviews on yelp looked good - my 13 YO daughter was off put by the size and thought it looked dead but when I stepped inside it was packed and an hour wait so we walked over to the flower shop which closed right away and went back to wait - grabbed a bar spot to have a drink and wait out our hour - I was a little shocked by the funk going on behind the bar - hands in pants - then into the olive garnish ‍ nooo it was pretty gross - lots of stinky glasses - we got cheese curds and they were battered with a breading that was like a sandwich it was so thick - I'm not a beer drinker so sadly the beer batter wasn't my fav - should have just gotten the fondue - we got a table after 45 mins - ordered what I'd hope to be quick sandwiches - after ordering our waitress never came back to refill drinks / see if we needed anything / if our food was ok / wouldn't make eye contact when she went by so I hand to turn around twice and stop her - I needed to add broccoli onto my daughters meal and ask for some bread to hold her over (mind you it's been over and hour and half since we started waiting and the kid was about to pass out) our food was average and we just wanted to leave bc the flies were everywhere - had to ask for Togo containers - ask again for the check - my husband finally got up and went and asked for it after she stood at the bar talking for 15 mins - I'd have had another glass of wine and wants 2 desserts to go but couldn't get anyone to come to take care of us. I think the owner or something started stepping in bc she was falling apart? I've almost never tipped 15% and actually left a not to tell the waitress she was pretty awful. Not a great effort. The food was tasty - have low expectations for the service.

Yelp
My wife was homesick for Germany so we decided to take a short trip West to New Glarus for a "European" fix! The restaurant has a cozy Southern Germany chalet feel to it hosting various wall décor to include farming tools. A full bar is also attached hosting some of the local beers on tap. My wife had the Pork Schnitzel and I had a Ruben. We also decided on some Rosti to see how close they could replicate the Swiss dish. Spot on all foods! My wife was amazed how well the Schnitzel was prepared along with the Rosti. The staff was so friendly and, along with the prices, made for a wonderful experience. Since we are not able to go to Germany this year because of travel restrictions, we plan on making another visit Glarner Stube. Vielen Dank to the staff!
