Glasgow Cathedral

It truly is a huge and exciting building. Stepping inside, that sense of scale is breathtaking—the towering stone pillars, the vast space under that ancient roof, the hidden depth of the Lower Church. It feels less like visiting a museum and more like exploring a living piece of history, full of quiet corners and dramatic light. Its survival through centuries makes walking through it an genuinely exciting experience. A magnificent place.

Consecrated in 1197, Glasgow Cathedral in Glasgow, Scotland, is dedicated to Saint Mungo, the 6th century missionary who founded the city. It's one of only two medieval Scottish cathedrals to survive the 16th century Reformation largely intact. Construction of the cathedral continued through the 12th and 13th centuries. The tomb of Saint Mungo in the crypt was a much visited pilgrimage site right up until the Scottish Reformation in 1560. The Victorian organ (1879) sits high up in the triforium of the choir. The Great West Window was created in 1958 by Francis Spear. It explores the theme of the creation with Adam and Eve at the bottom of the two central windows.

This is a beautiful majestic building. If you are a fan of history or architecture you will appreciate this building. It looks stunning lit up at night. We attended a candle light concert here and it was well worth it.

It's a truly unique experience to walk through such a historic place. Plus, it's free to enter, and you can get audio guides for a small fee to learn even more. The cathedral is really well-maintained, and it's a great visual experience. Highly recommend

Despite the advised booking of free tickets online, we discovered upon arrival that no one was checking them, and we were permitted to enter freely. We were fortunate to join a free guided tour immediately. The volunteer guide provided excellent context, explaining the history of the cathedral and the reasons for its construction in that location. There is a great deal to see, and visitors who appreciate religious art and history could easily spend several hours inside.

Glasgow Cathedral is one of the iconic buildings to visit in Glasgow. Its breathtaking and majestic Gothic architecture is evident both inside and out. The intricate details of the cathedral reveal the rich history of this enduring structure. The cathedral is free to enter, but donations are recommended for the restoration and maintenance of the building. Please note that the last entry is at 4:15 p.m., so you’ll need a full hour to explore everything inside. There’s also plenty of information to read along the way.

First visit inside, had walked past it on numerous occasions in the past. A wet Saturday afternoon, the cathedral and the square looked amazing. Lots of tour groups, the place was a buzzing. Once inside, the atmosphere was very sedate and respectful. Beautiful , building and the stain glass windows just add to the spectacular nature of this building

A stunning example of medieval Gothic architecture with a hauntingly beautiful crypt that is a must-see. It’s a peaceful, historic gem in the heart of the city and absolutely worth the visit.

Glasgow cathedral is stunning with its distinctive green roof and inside is just as magical with mesmerising colourful stained glass windows, St Mungo's tomb, and what was different about this cathedral is the highlighted message 'returning and into your arms' illuminated above . It's great to have a walk around the grounds to see some fabulous memorials and this is where the tv series Outlander was featured too so I would say this place is definitely worth a look around!

Glasgow Cathedral is intriguing with a rich, ancient history dating back to the 12th century. In fact, it's the oldest building in Glasgow and the oldest church in continental Scotland. The mysterious Gothic exterior beckons tourists inside where the interior displays impressive architecture. If you're in Glasgow, duck your head in here and take a picture. But don't spend hours. You won't need that. My favorite church in town? The Roman Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral, out of the way and quiet.

The Glasgow Cathedral is still a place of active Christian worship. Built around the late 12th century it is said to be located on the site of the patron saint of Glasgow. (Saint Kentigern buried in AD 612) This cathedral is next to the Necropolis. The outside of the building is impressive and the inside is well preserved. They offer free tours or you can walk around and at your leisure. Inside the Blackadder Aisle's ceiling is magnificent. The stained glass windows are gorgeous. You can also visit the crypt built for the tomb of St Kentigern and Bishop Wishart's memorial.

Visited April 2015: "Mesh of history" The Cathedral was in an area near other churches, a Necropolis, Hospital, and what seemed to be dorm rooms/halls for a university. It is dark Gothic architecture. It is also one of the few Scottish medieval churches (and the only medieval cathedral on the Scottish mainland) to have survived the Reformation not unroofed. We checked out the Cathedral in 30 minutes, including the crypt. There was a tour going on and it was discussing the tomb in the crypt - St Mungo. Other burials to check out: Robert Wishart, Bishop of Glasgow; James Law, Archbishop of Glasgow (1615-1632); Peter Lowe (surgeon), (1550-1610) doctor and medical author; Charles Macintosh, inventor of the MacKintosh. We then walked a portion of the Necropolis before heading back to our car before the meter ran out.

Glasgow Cathedral is a beautiful cathedral in the city center. It's a pretty standard European cathedral in many ways, with the stone exterior, stained glass windows, and wood paneling up front. One thing that set it aside though, was that downstairs there is a smaller chapel, which does include some history about the cathedral, including how it sustained even after the Scottish Reformation. I would recommend browsing around this free cathedral, and also taking the easy walk down the path next to it to see the cemetery (Necropolis) up the hill.

First time I've ever been inside courtesy of my school's Memorial Service. Deceptively large building, going far deeper than you would at first expect. The stained glass windows are magnificent and it appears that a lot of the original stonework is still present. I'm not religious in the slightest, but appreciate the effort that would have gone into designing, crafting and constructing a building such as this, especially the thick end of 1000 years ago.

Glasgow Cathedral, also known as St Mungo's or St Kentigern's Chathedral is a lovely gothic building located north of High Street in suprisingly, Glasgow. The building itself is impressive and rather lovely. The site is the buirial place of St Mungo ( the patron saint of Glasgow). The cathedral in now in the care of the Church of Scotland although was originaly a Catholic cathedral. Steeped in history and worth a visit.

A lovely cathedral, has lots of little chapels bulit in honour of people who were bishops, priests, ministers etc. It has a lot of history with the tomb of St Mungo who brought Christainity to the Glasgow area. Currently under restoration. Pay a visit to the gift shop for a sovenir. Perfect for someone who loves to study religion and churches.
