On the Grid : GFT

"An art-house cinema located off Sauchiehall Street. GFT has been around since 1939 and is decorated in art-deco style. It screens a wide variety of international cinema, classic films, documentaries and festivals, including Glasgow Film Festival and FrightFest. There is also a licensed bar, so you can enjoy a drink with your film. It's one of a kind in Scotland and the best place to catch a movie." - Kenna

Nice indecently run movie theater. They put a lot of effort into this as you can tell — staff is very nice, down-to-Earth, accommodating. Seating is a bit uncomfortable and rows are very close to each other (you can literally „feel“ the one sitting right behind you). Other than that great experience and keep your independence! 😀

Google
One of the best cinemas out there! Always stupendous quality and sound, the seats are comfier in screen 3 and screen 2 but all of them always look and sound amazing. Their programming is fantastic and unique, and the film festival is just one of the coolest events I’ve ever been to! Make sure to take advantage of the 15-25 membership if you can. My only complaint would be the bathroom situation but I know you can only do so much with the space you have

Google
The best independent cinema in Glasgow! Great staff, always welcoming. Amazing selection of movies. Grand events like Q&As, netting producers and filmmakers. My absolute favourite cinema in Glasgow!!

Google
An absolute gem. Has to be one of my favourite theatres in the entire world. Went twice when we were visiting Glasgow. Great mix of new and old films of the highest quality. The staff are extremely welcoming and the venue is beautiful.

The Olive Tree Family

Google
A great place to watch an independent movie. It’s a charity so I was happy to see my ticket sale was going to a good cause. I watched the potential Oscar winning American Fiction. Great movie, great cinema! I post a full video review on this, you can find our channel The Olive Tree Family across all social media channels.

Google
I love the GFT. It has so much history and a deliciously weird and wonderful film selection. I love it even more since it did a project with my sons school, helping the S1 pupils create a short film about the transition to secondary for P7 pupils about to transition. The event the GFT ran for the primaries was amazing. Huge praise for everyone involved.

Google
Very friendly and polite staff. The guy at the reception was very kind, explaining and giving tips. The bar is very good. Although the screen is not that big (I have been only in cinema 2), the screening room is comfortable. An excellent experience going to the cinema here.

I've seen many a good documentary in this venue. Great place, staff are excellent and the prices are reasonable 👍

Yelp
Have loved this cinema since childhood when we were taken to see old Laurel and Hardy movies when it was the Cosmo . Now well equipped for the 21st century with a selection of screens and a modern cafe . As always a great selection of movies especially when standard cinemas don't always have foreign or avant-garde movies showing . You can now purchase a loyalty card which reduces annual costs if you are a movie buff. Enjoy !!!

Yelp
I visited this theatre for the first time this weekend to see it's a wonderful life on the big screen . It's really a nice change from modern movie theatres and a good chance to see movies that aren't normally shown in mainstream theatres . You can have an alcoholic drink while you watch the film and there really is a great atmosphere in the place that you just wouldnt get else where . We loved it and we will most certainly be visiting again.

Yelp
Love, love, love the Glasgow Film Theatre! I was here tonight seeing Les Mis as a wee birthday treat from my parents with Colin, the Parentals, and my next door neighbour Grace. I forgot to mention in my original review that there's a coffee shop on the ground floor and a bar on the second floor, both of which are cosy and lovely and sell all your traditional bar and cafe like goodies! I just love how traditional and original the GFT is; just walking towards if from the outside, it looks like a gorgeous 1930's New York cinema or theatre and that's what I love about it! They also do a loyalty card which I think I'm going to invest in!

Yelp
I don't frequent the GFT as much as I used to since I became a proud owner of a Cineworld card & I hadn't been for nearly a year when we decided to go last weekend. The reason we came here is for one of the main reasons why the GFT is so brilliant ~ it offers a variety of films you just couldn't see on the big screen anywhere else in Glasgow. We saw a documentary about a Riot Grrrl singer/band who I loved & adored from the '90's (it's called The Punk Singer & it really is brilliant) - not really mainstream cinema audience stuff! Since we last visited the GFT has had a wee revamp & also now has an addition of a 3rd screen downstairs. It is essentially where the cafe used to be & when we first walked in I was a bit baffled as to where the cafe had moved too. It is now upstairs and downstairs towards the back they now have a wee coffee & snacks kiosk with a couple of tables/seats where you can also sit & wait before your film starts. We ordered some snacks & a coffee and sat for about 10 minutes. In this time I think I managed about 3 sips of my flat white which was hotter than the sun! *ouch* It was, once cooled, a reasonably nice coffee (note: they don't serve any soya/non-diary milk) if a tad pricey. Luckily for us our film was being shown in the new screen (screen 3) and as soon as we entered I was in love! It has been done out beautifully & it has a really cosy almost 'home cinema' feel to it. It is quite a small screen with only 60 seats in total. The seats themselves were lovely, soft leather style seats which were so comfortable AND they had cup-holders! Yay! Something I always felt was lacking in the other screens. As soon as we sat down we were smiling. The temperature of the screen was also pleasant - I usually find Cineworld or other cinemas too chilly at times so to not have to sit huddled underneath my coat during the film was a bonus. I love that the GFT exists in Glasgow because it truly is unique in this great city. The mix of old, new, Arthouse, World & more mainstream films being shown on any one week goes to show the eclecticism of it's audience & how well it caters for the film buffs in & around Glasgow. They occasionally put on theme or more one-off evenings ~ I remember in the early 2000's coming here to see local bands introducing their favourite films, some bands even performing on the night & other events where some bands would play along live to a film as it was being screened. Brilliant. They have a Loyalty Card scheme where by you earn points for each visit & points = money off tickets. They also have a Cinecard which is £32 a year for money off & points. You can also get the Orange Wednesday deal and the Sunday Herald Film Club 2-for-1 offer as well. So a trip here may not work out as pricey as you might originally think. It's a beautiful building and is well worth a visit at least once in your lifetime. I am sad about the demise of the cafe downstairs as I always thought it was really cool but if losing that means gaining a new (lovely) screen then it was worth it.

Yelp
Still going strongly despite the UGC now getting a lot of more obscure films on their bill, GFT is the city's long established arthouse cinema, playing current movies that ar either outwith, or on the peripheries of the mainstream, as well as a regular list of one-off showings of older classics and oddities alike. I'm still quite annoyed I missed their Halloween showing of Nosferatu. The screens are perhaps a bit small, but not enough to annoy you, and the 50s decor has bags of character. If the film you're after is on both here and at the UGC, you should support your local cinema.

Yelp
I doubt I'll ever have anything bad to say about the Glasgow Film Theatre, I've only had amazing experiences here. This most recent visit was just as amazing. King Creosote was there for a showing of the film From Scotland With Love which his music is the soundtrack for. What an amazing film chronicling the working class history of the people of Scotland. The music along with the music made for an emotional experience for myself and my boyfriend who so kindly bought the tickets for us. After the film, there was a q&a with the director of the film and the music, along with King Creosote himself. King Creosote played a few songs after the q&a which was an absolute treat. All in all, the night was amazing and it was definitely in part to the fabulous GFT (and obviously the company I was in)! Before the shows, there is a bar where beverages and snacks are sold that are allowed to be brought in to the theatre. It really is my first pick of places to view films of all sort, both mainstream and not so mainstream. If you're ever in the area, please make your way to the GFT and enjoy yourself!

Yelp
I love the GFT. I go often enough, most recently to see Battle Royale and there's loads of great stuff lined up over the Glasgow Film Festival. It's gorgeous inside, with showings of classic movies and world cinema in a far nicer environment than your average cinema. Thumbs up for an employee who done me a favour recently when I forgot my tickets for a showing and reserved me two replacements over the phone after checking my details on the system. Hassle free. They keep on giving you reasons to go back here, and most recently for me.. the vendine machine with cans of juice for 60p! Wont get a drink that cheap in Cineworld.

Yelp
The GFT is a one of a kind cinema in Glasgow these days, since most picture house buildings with character have been bulldozed in favour of the big ass complexes. Which, let's face it, have all been thwarted by the monolith that is Cineworld. So it's nice to go somewhere with character that offers a wee bit more than just your average blockbuster. Along with having a cafe-bar and reasonable prices, GFT plays host to a number of world cinema events, and most notably to the Glasgow Film Festival which thrives in the February of each year. You can expect to find some rare foreign films, special back-to-back B movie nights, cult classics and re-runs of old favourites in this charming movie theatre. GFT is usually the first to get films a bit left left of the dial - I know that term is used to define obscure indie music, but it seems fitting in this description. You can see a lot of award winning films here, from Toronto and Cannes film festivals to recent award winners such as Precious. Occasionally they will indulge the public in something a bit more on the main track, but these sorts of films are usually the more prestigious and meaningful of mainstream cinema offerings. They show cracking anime films in here, you can learn a great deal about world cinema, and they sometimes pay homage to the old glossy Hollywood numbers by showing old movies full of 50s startlets. And every year without fail, they show It's A Wonderful Life near Christmas, which is simply magical! A must see cinema for film buffs everywhere.

Yelp
The GFT is a Glasgow institution - it's highly recognisable even though it's ever so slightly hidden. It's popular with students and avid cinema go-ers alike - they do a lot of different films, as in, they dont just play what's come out at the time. They do afternoon classics, world cinema and much much more. As Lewis said, they also work a lot with different festivals around the city and different causes. It really is worth a trip to go and see something - whether it be blockbuster or arty - the place is great. Comfy chairs too.

Yelp
The GFT is truly a Glaswegian film-going experience. It's a fairly small, rather art-house cinema in the city centre, located on Rose Street, just off Suachiehall Street. It's well known despite the slightly odd location, and is frequented by cinema lovers, multiplex-loathers, and youngeters alike. they tend to show one or two mainstream films at a time, as well as lots of world cinema and classics. At Christmastime they screen It's a Wonderful Life. There are 2 screens, the smaller of which is really quite small and can be a bit cramped. The larger is more comfortable and spacious. My only qualm is that when you can't get seats close to the front and have to sit up the back, you feel a bit like you're watching a bit telly rather than a cinema screen. Call me a rock-kicking youngster but I love big screens that positively envelop you and all of your senses. That is something that you don't get here. The GFT is also very much involved in festivals, from the Glasgow Film Festival to the Youth Film Festival, and loads of others. I also once went here to hear the story of a Holocaust survivor with my higher history class, which was amazing to say the least. The café is also lovely, good place to chill and have a coffee before or after your film, especially if it's chilly out. Love it!

Yelp
Just love this independent cinema. Now with three screens (the smallest feels like you're in your living room with a huge screen) there's even more choice. It plays everything from indie releases to b/w, obscure to horror nights. On Saturday mornings there are children's films and (something I think is fabulous) autistic screenings where there is no tut tutting if your child does not sit still in its chair. I love the variety of films and the audience isn't likely to be on their mobile phones, talking through the film or munching their way through popcorn noisily. On saying that you can bring you coffee or (plastic) glass of alcohol in. If you're free on a Friday check out the prices as they are often cheaper during the day.

Yelp
This place is movie lover's dream: groovy layout, nice comfy seating, and a hip programme. Oh yeah, and you can bring your drink in. Brilliant idea, right? I was pants-peeingly excited about witnessing the force of nature known to us mortals as Brian Blessed. My husband booked our tickets a month in advance, and since we're a two-hour transit away I booked the day off work. The crowd was awesome, except for two drunk guys who sat behind us and drank throughout the show. They talked nonstop, and the guy behind me was so loud he actually drowned out Brian Blessed. His friend kept bashing the back of my husband's seat with his knees. This went on for an hour and a half so we left. A booze-friendly movie house sounds like heaven, but the reality is some people can't handle it. I can't risk another bad experience like that so as much as I love the place, I won't be going back.

Yelp
Five or so years ago, the GFT went through a rough patch. It was booking films that were not far off from the mainstream, only not as good, and only the odd season of themed films could save them. Now, it is very different. They have picked up their game, showcase more classics, run good alternative cinema for extended periods and have the Film Festival coming up next month: last year, they had the first showing of In The Loop, and their collaborations with Glasgay! and youth groups mean that the programme is in a constant state of evolution. They have even started to do late night classics once a month, and are really fulfilling their remit as a hip art-house theatre.

Yelp
Thee place to see independent films in Glasgow. The GFT has been around since dinosaurs first started drinking latte's and will probably still be around when those big lizards finally make the leap to capachinos (come on guys move the times!) From foreign films to documentaries, with the odd independent mainstreamish film thrown in for good measure the GFT is an excellent alternative to the big ol big olness that is the big ol Cineworld down the road. A real must if your into your culture and stuff.

Yelp
I'm by no means a huge cinema fan but I love a good independent cinema and the GFT ticks all the boxes. I went on Wednesday to see Le Petit Nicolas, a charming little French comedy. To my surprise, the GFT does Orange Wednesdays, costing me and a friend just about £2.50 each including our student discount. Madness, I hear you say. I recently went to see Brave in 3D at cineworld. With Orange Wednesdays and student discount it came to a whopping £10.70 between us. Now, that's madness! The price of cinema is certainly climbing but places like the GFT keep the real movie going experience alive and I'd happily go here any day of the week. You can take your drink into the cinema which is a nice touch. They have a great selection of films. Going here is a rarity for me. I think I'll make it a regular occurrence.

Yelp
Love this place with a capital L. Being a bit of a film snob it's hard to see some of the more independent (particularly foreign) releases in some of the bigger cinemas so this place is right up my street. We went to see the new Margarethe von Trotta movie Hannah Arendt - funnily enough a biopic about Hannah Arendt, particularly her coverage and commentary of the trial of Adolf Eichmann in Jerusalem and the influential ideas that sprung from this experience, helping her to come up with her theories on the "banality of evil." Those of you who know me will understand my sheer glee at being able to actually catch this movie in a cinema as opposed to waiting for the DVD release. From my experience its almost impossible to see some of these foreign, some would say "high brow" movies in some of the chain theatres. It's cheap, does Orange Wednesdays and student discount so there's no excuse! It's old fashioned, it's retro, it's really pretty cool.

Yelp
I love films of all types and the GFT certainly shows some of the more quirky, old or independent films. Unfortunately I have an Unlimited card for Cineworld so I don't go here too often - most of their films only show for a week so it's easy to be unable to catch them. Recent films I've seen here are the original French, black and white Beauty &The Beast. And Frozen sing along. And yes, it was awesome, and yes I'm seeing it again next week ;) The theatre's been undergoing a humongous refurb over the past couple of years - the new cafe does a pretty decent coffee!

Yelp
I absolutely love dependent film theaters and the GFT is a perfect one. They have a really good selection of UK and European films. As a native French speaker, I know I can get my kick of quality French culture almost anytime I want. They also occasionally show more commercial movies, but never compromise on the quality. The place has also recently had a facelift and the theaters are brand new. You can also buy any drink and snacks from their little café upstairs and bring it with you at the showing. The GFT is a definite must in Glasgow if you want something else than Cineworld on a movie night out!

Yelp
Sometimes, you just know that you love a place. That is how I feel about the GFT. It had been on my List for ages (and I mean seriously, years) and FINALLY, when Carolyn E was picking up tickets and I saw Vertigo advertised, we immediately made a plan to come here. A few days later, tickets were ordered and I was SO excited about this. I was a little taken aback that we didn't have to select seats while booking the tickets, but no harm was done - we were going to get here early and my amigo has a favourite seats anyways. The GFT, as must be pretty clear, is an independent cinema part of the Europa Group of cinemas that have independent cinemas all over the world. They, from what I can tell, focus on real cinematography, the classics, and independent films. The really good films. I will be honest, sometimes there's nothing better than a rom com chick flick or an action film where things get blown up left right and centre, but sometimes you just need some classics - like Hitchcock's Vertigo. Or sometimes you want to watch the live screening of Shakespeare or a classic piece of theatre history - or a personal favouite of mine, the Bolshoi Ballet, being performed in London (for example, or anywhere) and you won't get that anywhere but the GFT. (they do show mainstream and cineworld films too, not just that weird french film where nobody speaks a word for 3 hours). Make sure you always check what's on, because it likely that you will miss showings if you procrastinate the ticket purchase. I love this place. It has such an old school feel to it, it's amazing. Also, the seats are very comfortable. It's also not as cold as the Cineworld cinemas (success!). I cannot wait to come back and see more things. Everybody should have the GFT on their List, and everybody should come here to see things.

Yelp
This is definitely one of my favourite places in Glasgow! The GFT is a three screen independent cinema that shows all kinds of films from big studio blockbusters to short films by local filmakers. This is the place to come to see independent movies and world cinema. They have lots of special one off screenings of old films and late night screenings of cult movies. They also host various film festivals throughout the year including the Glasgow Film Festival. You can check out their website for listings or pick up one of their programs from the foyer or various shops and cafes around the city. There's a new one each month and it's great to pour over and plan your next trip. There are three screens here, one big, one medium and one small. The smallest is Screen 3 which is also the newest. I really like all three screens and it's amazing to think that this used to be one big cinema back in the 30s. There's also a balcony bar and a kiosk with snacks, tea and coffee and my favourite Cream O Galloway ice cream tubs. The prices are reasonable and there's no rip off popcorn (but you can always bring your own, just try not to spill it!) The ushers at the GFT are all volunteers and since I used to volunteer here I can tell you it's a great gig! You get to see lots of films for free and get free film passes for your friends. Ideal if you love cinema.

Yelp
This is a Film Theatre for film fans, independent movies, foreign films, and a smattering of mainstream movies. It is a good place, comfy seats and good viewing angles. Was in to see Black Angel, which was cool, but I didn't realise there would be a Q&A with the director afterwards. Well worth coming to and supporting the more off beat stuff that never makes the cineplexs.

Yelp
I've recently been informed that the GFT used to be where they used to show the dirty flicks back in the day... no wonder mr cosmo looks so happy! Now, technically a charity, it shows films which are slightly off the beaten track. The 'big screen' is about the size of one of the smaller ones in Cineworld and the 'wee screen' is the size of the telly in my living room. This is part of the charm! You don't feel like your being herded in, fleeced of your cash then punted out before you have a chance to realise what happened. Its a warmer and more comforting experience, like going round to your mates for a movie night. The selection of movies is good too, I particularly enjoy the late night classics. They're shown on a Friday night at 11 and range from JP and Gremlins to the Goodfellas and Taxi Driver. Most people take along a carryout and have a bit of a laugh, so if your wanting to take the film super seriously you'd be better getting it on DVD. The coffee is good, the beer is from West and the lemon cake is delicious. If there is a movie you fancy and its a choice between the film theatre or a huge complex... choose here, the prices are similar but the GFT experience is far superior. See you at the Breakfast Club! Yelp
You can always watch a brilliant European or non-commercial movie in GFT, that's not a secret, but I also find it very convenient that GFT screens mainstream films too; those brilliant, worth screening ones. It's my asylum whenever I get overwhelmed by people and need to isolate. Audience is respectful towards the others and the movie itself. It's a great, peaceful place. Oh and you can always grab a copy of 'THE SKINNY' there too, which is a cherry on the top when leaving the building after a great movie.

Yelp
I was pretty excited when I arrived. I grabbed a beer (how civilised) and wandered down to the very front to get a seat. Row 1, floor level, the large screen opening up in front of me. The room darkened. duuunnnnnn, Dunnnnnnnn, DUUUNNNNNN, DAAAAAAADAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!! 2001: A Space Odyssey is a classic sci-fi movie, iconic in places and the film my parents saw on their very first date together apparently... (not sure that paints my Dad in a great light but there you go). A special screening at the GFT and a chance to revisit this wonderful cinema. I tend to treat the GFT as a 'special experience' kinda place. It's a little out of the way for me, parking is a bit of a pain if I'm driving, but as it sells beer I tend to leave the car if I can. It's been well restored and the recent renovations add to the charm, but it's the movies they show, and the events they host that make this a great place. I'll happily admit I'm a wanna be movie buff, and whilst I'm happy watching the latest silly big blockbuster, I'm far happier watching Vertigo, All About Eve, or the latest Pedro Almodóvar. The staff are knowledgeable, and it's definitely a grown-up experience. Long may it continue!

Yelp
You know, sometimes the retina-blasting movie theater experience at my local World of Cine is a bit much. Sometimes I want some culture, some irreverence, some timelessness and some booze in my cinema experience. Enter the inimitable GFT. Housed in a modernist building with an effortlessly cool post-art deco interior, this two-screened beauty of a cinema is the destination in Glasgow for arthouse, foreign, and under the radar films. The juxtaposition of culturally modern films being viewed in such a culturally historic setting gives the whole experience an unexpected air of fun. In addition to movies, there are discussion groups, live-by-satellite events, and a film quiz. The GFT cultivates its audience by branching out beyond the art house demographic and providing a variety of entertainment.

Yelp
Love this place. Went with a mate straight after work, had never been here before so thought we would give it a bash. Reminds me of the old ABC my mum used to take me too in Muirend when I was a kid. What a beautiful building, very art deco. We decided to nip into the Cafe/Bar to have a wee beverage before the movie started. Smart wee place and the drink is reasonable priced (about the same as any other Glasgow bar). From what I observed The GFT attracts the more arty and cultured crowd (which I like), certainly beats the sea of screaming teenagers and minging sticky carpets of Cineworld. Tickets were priced at 7 quid (a lot cheaper than the main cinema complexes). The good thing is that you can take your drink in with you to the screening, (get in there lol) The theatre itself was gorgeous and had a magnificent domed ceiling. No sooner had we sat down and my mate spilt his drink, just as well I had a bottle of champers in my bag that I won in work. Popped the cork sipped my champers, sat back and enjoyed the movie (well from what I can remember of it) All I know is that it was called 'Sightseers' Cannot rate this place highly enough, different from the norm. :)

Yelp
One of my favourite places to spend a winters afternoon despite the year by year erosion of bar and catering facilities. Great choice of films and film festivals.

Yelp
Glasgow is very lucky to have The GFT. It is a beautiful, art deco cinema showing a range of studio and independent movies. The two screens are elegant and stylish; a curtain parts and the lights dim as the film begins, the way movies are supposed to be seen. The Cafe Cosmo provides a range of drinks and light meals. Alcoholic beverages can be taken into the cinema provided they are put into plastic cups. The most popular event of the year is the annual screening of "It's A Wonderful Life" on Christmas Eve. A pianist plays Christmas carols before the film begins. It is possibly the most christmassy you will ever feel. Really looking forward to this year's Glasgow Film Festival. There are tons of interesting features, many of which are to be shown in the GFT.

Yelp
I love the GFT! It is a fantastic resource where you are able to step into the world of world cinema to see films that you might otherwise have been unable to see at mainstream cinemas. I studied a module of European film at Uni in second year and a module of German cinema in third year, the GFT proved to be an invaluable resource and I've spent a lot of time here. It was never a chore though, even if it was for a kind of studying purpose. I love the old traditional feel that GFT has, there are too many new swanky cinemas in Glasgow that lack any kind of soul of character. If you are a film fanatic then it is worth noting that GFT have a "Cinecard" where you pay an annual fee of £30 and get 4 free cinema tickets and then £1 every screening for a year. You can also buy Saver Tickets where you pay £28.50 (adults) / £21 (concession) and you can see five films, these tickets are valid for three months so definitely worth while!

Yelp
I am not surprised that the GFT has been reviewed so many times but I just can't resist adding myself to the adoring masses! Being a total film buff I have so much affection for this beautiful art house cinema and can't stand the gaudy , flashy Hollywood blockbusterness (yes I just made up a word) of the big cinema chains. I am a huge fan of world cinema and the GFT have plenty of foreign films on show throughout the year. They had a couple of weeks dedicated to Chinese cinema one year and I think I practically live in the place during that time! I also went to see a preview of Quentin Tarantino's "Death Proof" at the GFT and there was an excellent question and answer session with Tarantino before they showed the film. It was a fascinating insight into the mind of one of my favorite cult film directors. The GFT also shows a lot of old films and me being a little old soul I just can't get enough of them. Every year, just before Christmas I go to see "It's a Wonderful Life" and it makes me feel so warm and fuzzy inside. I found myself single on Valentine's Day this year so I treated myself to a night at the GFT where I saw "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and it was endlessly satisfying. There is nothing else I would of rather being doing that night! If you are even remotely interested in cinema consider giving Cineworld a miss one night and walking the couple of blocks down to the GFT instead. You won't regret it.

Yelp
The Glasgow Film Theatre really is something to rave about. It shows a selection of carefully chosen foreign and domestic films that you may not be able to see in the multiplex. The cinemas are of an 30s art deco style, the velvet curtains opening to to reveal the movie. The Christmas Eve showing of "It's A Wonderful Life" has to be experienced at least once.

Yelp
My first visit to the GFT saw me hand in hand with my dad at the age of 10 or 11. It was a cold winter's afternoon and we both had out gloves on. Even under the cold circumstances, once I saw the fridge lined with Haagen Dazs the gloves were off and my constant sniffles suddenly stopped. Our film was to be It's A Wonderful Life, and we saw it the first year the GFT decided to show it before Christmas sometime back in the late 90s. And what an event it was. I was awe-stuck by the grand piano at the front of the screen and the old school black and white show had me emersed in the world of Bedford Falls. From that moment on I was hooked and its my first stop for screening of cult movies and european cinema. Be sure to grab a beer or a nice (cup of) wine and sit back to enjoy your screening. Support it throughout the year as well, and if its not you thing, try your best to book It's A Wonderful Life for Christmas Eve and enjoy your surroundings!

Yelp
I love the GFT. Seriously, everything about it. Maybe I should write more I suppose that you could classify this as an art house cinema, but that probably depends on your taste in film. The GFT shows a range of films, from taking part in various film festivals, showing foreign language films, one-off showings of classic or rare prints to current releases at the more independent end of the movie spectrum. There are two screens and maybe only around half a dozen shows a day and that's maybe only two different films, so it's worthwhile checking out the programme before you go. They produce a wee monthly magazine with their timetable and details on all the films shown in the given month. They have special kids showings on a Saturday morning and one for concessions on Wednesday morning. The building itself is in a lovely original Art Deco style and used to be the Cosmo cinema, a name now used by the cafe, which has a good range of hot and cold snacks and coffee, although on my last visit I was served a below par toasty (too dry and no side salad). They also still use the tiny old paper tickets and show It's a Wonderful Life every Christmas, what's not to love. It you are going to watch something in Screen 1, I recommend sitting in the seat dedicated to Gene Roddenberry, it's in the first row back from the middle walkway and more or less in the middle.

Yelp
AN excellent cinema. Screen s films that may not make the main circuit and brinsg back old classics for a second chance. It has avoided the risk of becoming an art house institution and precious and instead managed to retain the essence of a good night out at the pictures.

Yelp
A lovely independent cinema with friendly staff and a good selection of interesting films and film festivals. It's usually my first choice of cinema in Glasgow!

Yelp
A world away from the modern corporate complex that is Cineworld, the GFT is an intimate and hospitable independent film house that shows a range of indie and world films that do not get an airing elsewhere. It is relatively cheap, and there are also special deals for early morning kids films at the weekend too. There is a nice cafe downstairs, and I think it stays open in the evening and serves alcohol too. A pleasant envoronment in which to enjoy older or non-mainstream films in - highly recommended indeed

Yelp
This is a great little cinema, and my favorite place to see a film. I like that they only have a couple screens, and that they bring in a variety of mainstream and art films. Also, they let you take your wine in with you!

Yelp
hands down, my absolute favorite thing about glasgow... it could only be better if they served salty popcorn and/or giant pickles... (they are not above it.) also, if they showed 8 1/2 for moi. x

Yelp
This is a great place to watch movies if you actually consider cinema as an artform. Facilities are old school but equipment is modern and sound system is just perfect. Moreover, both screens are quite large for an independant theatre. The atmosphere is nice, almost tribal, with all these cinema lovers hanging around and sharing views in the Cosmo Bar. It gets really cool during the Glasgow Film Festival, as GFT is arguably the main venue of this event.

Yelp
Such a sweet little place. The feeling of this cinema is intimate and authentic. The place is well kept, the cafe is a little haven and you're allowed to take your drinks from the bar into the cinema with you (handy if you've misjudged times). A good selection of films.

Yelp
With only two screens, the GFT is an art deco theater built in the late 1930s. Films shown here include independent, foreign, repertory and art house. The interior decor is old-fashioned - lots of wood and brass, a small but nicely-outfitted cafe/bar - Cafe Cosmo, and authentic mechanical ticket machines in the box offices. Cinema 1 is large and vaguely theatre-like and cinema 2 is small and somewhat more cramped. On the whole, a rather pleasant alternative to the other multi-screened cinemas on offer today. A must for those into independent cinema - the building and ticket office is beautiful.

Yelp
By far the best cinema in Glasgow, it features a lovely little cafe to relax in and enjoy a drink before the feature. Independent and less mainstream pictures tend to be screened here, with films changing frequently so catch them quick or you'll miss them. It often plays host to various foreign and international film festivals and many of the films shown are subtitled, excellent films that you could miss altogether if you stuck to the large multiplex cinemas. A trip to the GFT feels like a more personal cinema experience, Look out for films preceded by a talk from the director or followed by discussion groups. This cinema is a must for any film buffs out there.

Yelp
So disappointed!!! I went to the FT to see wild tales as a part of the Glasgow Film festival, and they say ohh it is not here, it is in some other cinema at the other side of the city... sorry. ???? whay about my money, probably I should explain that as a part of the festival I tried to see the film previosly and was sold out, then I bought for Saturday, "in the GFT Ticket office", at least they can say something when I was paying for a film I didnt see at the end, something like, "It will be in some other venue, just in case"... . and no mentioning all the technical problems during other events, I ´sould ask: Why Cineworld, such a wonderful cinema was no supporting this year the Glasgow Film festival??... I wont spend my money again in GFT, for most wonderful the film are... I will wait to see it in some other city or TV

Yelp
This a nice theatre that shows a lot of independent movies that can't be seen elsewhere in Glasgow. In fact I don't think there are many places like it in Scotland. It tends to attract an older audience so you;re not likely to have to put up with teenagers talking and throwing stuff during the film. The seats are quite cramped, but I suppose that's the price of going to an older theatre.

Yelp
Went to see 'The Girl Who Played With Fire' - this teeny but cosy cinema has a brilliant atmosphere whether you go with friends, family or on your tod. Cafe Cosmo has a brilliant lounging vibe and the array of alternative, high quality films is always good. Only thing I'd say as with a lot of cinies these days is that the tickets are quite expensive and its helpful if you have student ID etc.

Yelp
Great cinema love this place, it got a lot of style. They shore don't make them like this any more that's for sure... If you are in Glasgow and want an alternative night out then this is the spot!! They have a fab wee coffee shop to to chill and have a wee break or a something stronger at night..

Yelp
I love this place. There's always an interesting selection of films which you don't typically see at cineworld, mainly smaller, independent, cult and European films and sometimes live screenings of plays/operas. I really like the art deco interior design. The cafe/bar is another attraction, they're too classy to sell popcorn but you can take booze into the theatre. The food and coffee are very nice, I'd come here for lunch/coffee alone.

Yelp
This is another of my favourite Glasgow places. The GFT is a small cinema with only 2 screens and a wonderful cafe serving actual proper food (no popcorn!) and alcohol (which can be taken into the theatre with you). They show a carefully picked selection of films - a mixture of some big blockbusters and arthouse, indie films you would never see at the Cineworld multiplex down the road. Whenever I go to the GFT I feel like it's a little sanctuary, somewhere I can escape to and relax and just enjoy a good film. Prices are typical of other cinemas in the area.

Yelp
The Glasgow Film Theatre is an independent cinema screening a range of mainstream, indie and world cinema. i was worried this would be pretentious, however, i was pleasantly suprised. Very welcoming and accepting of children with not a tut to be heard. Was a lovely change from tutting adults and over priced pick n mix. Highly recommended!
