Glenfiddich: One of Scotland’s Last Family-Owned Whisky Distilleries - AFAR

"Located in Speyside near the Conval Hills, this historic distillery produced its first batch on Christmas Day 1887 and now makes more than 14 million liters of single‑malt Scotch each year. The operation is built around a single mountain spring that has supplied all process water for well over a century, and staff stress that any change in water source would alter the whisky. Visitors see the full production chain — oatmeal‑scented mash tuns and 10‑ton mash vessels, 72‑hour fermentation in wooden washbacks, stout copper stills with long necks and a double distillation — before spirits are aged a minimum of 12 years in oak casks. An on‑site cooperage repairs and toasts barrels (including those that once held sherry, bourbon, and rum), a practice credited with contributing up to 65 percent of the final flavor, while the blending room relies on expert nosing to marry casks into consistent expressions. Tastings highlight a fruity, pear‑like character with notes of baked apple and toffee, a subtle sweetness and a smooth finish, and a variety of guided tours and hands‑on experiences are available to visitors." - Jessica Colley Clarke

Beautiful & Legendary Distillery We decided to visit Glenfiddich Distillery in Dufftown, as we were visiting the nearby Balvenie castle. We really enjoyed it and thought this place was great. It looks the part, a bit Victorian a bit Scottish, it is really nice & well maintained. I have know this Whisky my whole life, even living in Switzerland, somehow it was always in the bars, clubs I was going to. I imagined it would of been a larger and more industrial place. I was happy to see it was more normal, smaller, etc. This is somewhat in the heart of Speyside's whisky region do visit if you can! The tour (like most of them in Scotland explains the production and making process, of whisky. Really worth your time and highly recommended from us. Note they also have a great shop and bar.

I had a great time touring this rightfully famous distillery in Dufftown! The distillery is beautiful, sitting in a scenic valley, they just recently added a beautiful new still house. The tour is a great value: in 1h30 you get to learn about the history of this family distillery, visit the facility with a step-by-step of the whisky making process, and get to try 4 different drams, including a special edition. They take away kits for drivers, but I would recommend leaving the car home and coupling this visit with a ride on the Keith-Dufftown heritage railway for a full-day experience!

Visiting the iconic Glenfiddich Distillery near Dufftown, the heart of Speyside's whisky region, is a must. The tour offers a fascinating glimpse into their whisky-making process, from mashing to maturation. Tasting their renowned single malts is a highlight. While it can be busy, the chance to experience this Speyside icon and learn about their family history and innovative techniques is well worth it for any whisky lover in the area. The visitor center and shop are excellent too.

We were passing the Glenfiddich Distillery when we met a very friendly security guard. He invited us to have a look around so we did. All the tours were booked up. We chatted with various people and visited the shop which was very busy. Next time we visit we might book a tour and that would give a better understanding of this very popular industry.

Google
Of course, Glenfiddich isn't exactly an insider tip. But the tour of the distillery is unparalleled—and we experienced many on our tour. Glenfiddich is one of the gold standards when it comes to Scottish whisky and shows that even a large distillery can impress with individuality and quality.

Unforgettable Tasting Experience The Glenfiddich 1990 and 1992 Sherry Oak casks are hands down the best whiskies I’ve ever tasted, truly exceptional! Deep, rich, and perfectly balanced. A standout moment in an already fantastic tasting.

Google
We did the Malt Masters tour, Kevin our guide was very knowledgeable and good fun! The tour is very informative about the family history, the distillery history and the whole whisky making process! Then you get to be creative, tasting 4 x cask strength whiskies before blending your own 200ml bottle to take home! A great tour and well worth the money

Google
Very well done tasting room & shop. Picked up a 15yr bottle and got the sign the book and create my own bottle label. Wide variety of flights and merchandise.

Yelp
If you only go on one distillery tour while in Speyside, this is the one to go on! You're gonna need reservations because it fills up, but it is an in-depth tour of the distillery and their process. The warehouses are fantastic and they have a really good taste after the tour. If you just wanna go to the tasting room because you can't give them a tour, you can spend the lot of money, but you'll have an experience like no other The grounds are amazing and the Balvenie castle ruined is within walking distance and a nice place to have a picnic lunch depending on the time of year. You also walk beside barley fields. Barley that goes in the scotch that you just saw being made or being engaged.

Yelp
I prefer Balvenie Scotch to Glenfiddich, but I stalked the Balvenie tours for months to no avail, so I was happy to get a tour booked for Glenfiddich. The tour started right on time, and we were treated to a delightful walk through the property, which is very large. It's beautifully manicured and the ladies room in the main building has a bathroom you could host a balllroom dance in. PLus it has a fireplace. Worth seeing on it's own. Anyway, after the walking tour we were treated to the tastings. I highly recommend if you're doing the Whisky trail to hire a driver, because otherwise, someone in your party is going to get a take home set of samples. Scotland is SERIOUS about their 0.0 legal limit. We hired a driver for the day, so we were all able to taste. We each got tastings of four different scotches. Yum! The gift shop is also very nice, with a wide variety of bottles and well crafted merchandise available for purchase.

Yelp
Only a so-so experience if you're coming with kids and can only go to the gift shop. My wife and I originally wanted to visit Balvenie, but when we e-mailed them we were told (1) they didn't have any more tour slots, (2) even if they did kids weren't allowed on the tours, (3) they didn't do tastings except for the tours, and (4) we should check out Glenfiddich as they would do tastings including Balvenie's scotches and had a gift shop the kids could go in. Based on that, we visited here, but we found out that the tasting room was closed (not sure why) and so we could only visit the gift shop. In the gift shop after we politely asked, we were told we could taste 1 or maybe 2 scotches and only one of us could taste them because the other person was driving. The result was that my wife could taste only 2 of the 4-6 scotches we might have wanted to buy. After making it clear we were buying at least one over £300 bottle of scotch, they let her taste a third. We wound up buying two bottles, one of which we enjoyed in the evenings during the rest of our trip and the other we brought home with us. Overall, the experience was really mediocre. I wish they had some better way to cater to a family with kids that still wants to do a real scotch tasting and buy a few bottles.

Yelp
We booked ourselves in for a 1.5 hours tour on a Friday afternoon. We spent 2 hours with an amazing guide, taking us through the history of Glenfiddich, past the different steps in the distilling process into the warehouse. We finished with a lovely tasting of 4 Glenfiddich whiskies. An outstanding visit and a must-do.

Yelp
This was a gorgeous estate. It's has a woodsy feel with a beautiful decor. I came here during a Speyside whisky tasting tour. My guide said I had to check out the women's bathroom because it was the most photographed bathroom in Scotland. So obviously I had to checkout the bathroom. It didn't disappoint! Everything in the visitor center is decorated like a beautiful lodge! The visitor center is huge and has so many cool Glenfiddich merchandise and of course whisky. I would say this is a must stop if you like Glenfiddich!

Yelp
Not very welcoming. Plenty of staff but definitely cold. Unaccommodating. Grounds look pretty. If you plan to go even on a rainy off day be sure to book in advance. Gift shop was just overpriced whisky and glasses. So my summation is if you've been to one distillery you've been to all of them

Yelp
A MUST STOP ON WHISKY TRAIL!!!! If you are planning to explore the whisky trail then Glenfiddich must be already in your checklist (If not then please do add!). Since we were spending our time already we decided to go all out and opted for pioneers tour. The tour took over 3.5 hours. It started out with some meet and greet session with our guide and fellow tourists. Then there's a video showing detailed history/back story of Glenfiddich followed by touring the distillery itself and getting to know the process. Then we visited the warehouse where the casking process was explained. Interesting fact; Every year the mixologist create unique limited whisky by using different spirit casks or mixing different numbers of old and new casks. during this whole process we got to TASTE EVERYTHING...at every producing stage of whisky making. The fruit drink, beer, moonshine and finally Whisky The tour ended with us at a large ornate dinning table with a flight of the entire Glenfiddich range. Here we discussed each whisky with our guide and learned the tasting technique. Oh what an experience it was! it is the best tour out of any distillery I visited, hands down and I highly recommend it.

Yelp
American Tourist here. Awesome property. Beautiful location with plenty of greenery. Not particularly a fan of Glenfiddich whisky but the same company owns Balvenie so you can get Balvenie flights here also. This is probably one of the larger distilleries in the area, it's also close to Balvenie and Macallan so look into checking out those two distilleries also. One bad mark against them is that I scheduled a tour online for 1030. When i showed up they said there is no record of my reservation. I showed them my confirmation email and they basically said...oh well. I asked what was the next available opening and the worker said in two hours. An hour later I happened to pass by another visitor who basically walked up and signed up for a tour slot an hour earlier than what i was told....

Yelp
Very cool tour. If you come here, I would opt for the paid version of the tour because this would get you access to some tastings and also a peak into their warehouse in the very back yard. Our tour guide was a young female student with a cool Scottish accent who had a wide knowledge of Scotch and spirits. She wasn't an expert but she knew her stuff and how to answer a lot of the common questions we tourist usually ask. Keep in mind, most of the tour guides here are students who do this as a part time job during the summer. Pretty sweet job I think! The tour starts you off in a movie room where you learn about the history of Glenfiddich. Then you split into smaller groups so it's more personable and easier for the guides to manage. The tour walks you through the entire process from start to finish. It includes everything from malting, grinding, brewing, fermentation, and distillation. You also learn about the importance of aging and the barrel making process. In the end (if you paid for the tour) you get to sample four different types of scotch. It's a 12, 15, 18, and 21 year old. It's pretty cool to be able to try four different types so you can compare in between them and see what you like. Most people (like me) who don't drink whisky/scotch very often don't understand and appreciate the difference between different ages and I think this is great way to be exposed to that.

Yelp
AMAZING tour! Super nice people. Can't recommend this place enough. The campus was gorgeous.

Yelp
We had an absolutely great time at the distillery. Our tour guide, Lucy, was the bee's knees AND the car's pajamas. She was seriously the best. Informative, patient, and eternally happy, she should be given an instant raise. YOU HEAR ME GLENFIDDICH MANAGEMENT?! Promote this woman immediately. The only reason it gets four stars and not five is because normally at the end of the tour in the gift shop you can make your own, one of a kind bottle of whisky. And unfortunately when we visited they were out of the physical bottles, so we couldn't make our own. Bummer.

Yelp
Almost all whiskey tours in Scotland cost a pound or 6. This place is really generous with Glenfiddich's history and whiskey drams. FYI, there is another Glenfiddich yelp page open but is a German linked one. Moving right along, upon arrival to the complex our group accidentally drove into the area that is for visitors to walk on in between buildings as well as for Glenfiddich vehicles only. Hehehe the cute young male employee ran out of the visitor's center and told us kindly where is the actual parking lot. :-) Anyways, our group finally arrived in time for the 4:30pm tour and it really really special. Our awesome guide Joan began the tour with an informative video about the founder and his family tree of current CEOs who still run the distillery. There is also an on-site building that creates wooden barrels for use and is sold as an export to other countries. Joan took our group where we needed to go to understand the process of whiskey production. So much history here...that even the first home-made stone building, that founding father William Grant created with his bare hands, is still standing! Even the little lake, that is used for cooling the copper distillery pipes, is beautiful! The best part of this tour was a chance to taste drams from years 12, 18, and 21. All delicious!!! (The whiskey is more expensive if you buy in the UK (as well as in other cities outside Dufftown) compared to the US.)

Yelp
If you can afford the pioneers tour, it is the best tour out of any distillery I visited, hands down. Quite incredible and way above and beyond what most other distilleries are willing to do. I want to say it took over 3 hours. It started out with some coffee or tea with our own personal guide. More of a meet and greet session. Then there's the very comprehensive history/back story of Glenfiddich and the warehouse tour wherein we got to TASTE EVERYTHING...at every producing stage of whisky making. No joke and totally badass. -Drink the wort right out of the mash tun! (fruit drink) -Drink the wash right out of the washback! (beer) -Drink the distilled spirit! (Everclear/whitelighting/moonshine) -Drink the matured whisky out of a giant VAT at cask strength (Whisky) We also got to hand bottle our own whisky from a special cask. Last but no where near the least...we sit down at a large ornate dinning table in a completely pimped out room with a flight of the entire Glenfiddich range up to 30yo! Here we discussed each whisky with our guide and generally turned into merry fools. This tour is very personal, exclusive and pretty much a must if you want the best.

Yelp
Very scenic and good production value. Worth the tour to see such a comprehensive distillery including bottling. Not the biggest fan of the spirits but the tour is a very good one.

Yelp
This is one of the best distillery tours on the block, the free tour is approximatly an hour long that takes your round the distillery and culminates with a tasting of the 12, 15 & 18 year old whiskies. The tour staff are lovely and friendly. This is a great way to understand the history of the company and learn a fair amount about the making of whisky as well. The biggest downfall is the whisky itself. I'm not a huge glenfiddich fan but the tour itself is seccond to none. The onsite shop is a little bit steep for buying whisky but has some good little keepsakes, Also an onsite coffee shop in the visitor centre. Parking is fine in the off season but can be manic in the peak holidays so bear in mind when planning your journey.

Yelp
Great tour around the distillery. Very friendly guide.

Yelp
Great tour for the Explorer's tour (90 minutes, £10 per person) Our guide was very informative and the walk around the distillery was very interesting. The history of the distillery was very interesting too. This distillery is also near Balvenie Castle (2 min. walk). Free at the time I went due to "remodeling".

Yelp
One of the best stops on our whiskey trail. Great tour with knowledgeable guides and the Malt Barn is the perfect place to taste expressions of Glenfiddich you can't really find in the wild. If they still have you must try the Snow Phoenix, so special. The story that goes a long with it is great too.

Yelp
Logan gave us a great tour, he was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and gave a polished presentation. Only disappointment was that they ask who's driving before serving you whisky, so I didn't get to taste. They did give me a small bottle of they 12 year to take home, however I didn't get to taste the 15 or 18 year whisky as did the rest of the group.

K G.

Yelp
Friendly, quick efficient informative tour with a free tasting at the end of the 12, 15, and 18 year whiskies. We had lunch in the restaurant which was excellent - overall a classy, friendly experience.
