8 places in Tokyo to get your specialty coffee fix - SilverKris

"A stalwart of Tokyo's specialty scene in Jimbocho—an area known for used books—this minimalist space pairs coffee with a literary vibe, offering limited seating and a focus on lighter-roast beans sourced from places like Kenya, Colombia and Bolivia; drinks are accompanied by small notecards detailing tasting notes." - Rachel Eva Lim

Google
Fantastic coffee shop for those that love exploring coffee and its vast potential. The service is exceptional, with each cup in my flight dialed in to experience complexity and variety. The coffee industry is not perfect, but the staff here show a great amount of respect for the pour overs and espresso they brew. They offer a select few options as lattes and cold coffee, but I cannot personally imagine trying anything other than their coffee as-is. Be prepared for a possible wait at this location. It is a very tight space and the demand is high, which each order is daringly prepared without being rushed. A part of me wishes it weren’t so popular so I could have chatted with Ryu more about the coffees he served me. Thank you, Ryu! :)

Google
Amazing experience for speciality coffee lovers. There is quite wide variety of beans to choose from, and staff is very nice, helpful and knowledgeable, and can guide you to your beans of choice. Staff also speak very good English. The place it self is beautifully decorated, with a pleasant atmosphere to sit and enjoy your coffee. And of course the coffee itself is splendid.

Krzysztof M.

Google
A nice artisanal coffee shop offering a wide selection of carefully roasted beans. You can choose between a hand filtered brew or a classic espresso style. Prices vary, but the quality makes it worthwhile. I really enjoyed my coffee and would happily return if I get the chance

Google
Small little coffee shop that has exceptional single origin beans. The space is a bit tight so the waits are long. Not a good place to come as a group or stay long. There’s a roaster at the end and it’s cool but it can get loud if they are roasting that day. They play records which is really neat. Coffee is quite exceptional and they also have a wide range of beans giving you a surprising amount of flavor profiles to choose from. It can get pricey. I noticed that doing their tasting isn’t really worth it. Just get two cups of coffee or go with a friend and order three to share. Love this place and visit every time I’m here. Been like 15+ times now and will visit again someday!

Google
Came here to try a quality coffee, and I certainly did. While it is a bit more expensive than your average latte, I would highly recommend it! I'm not an avid coffee drinker, but I do enjoy a latte every once in a while, and this one changes my perspective. It was very cool to choose what coffee beans I wanted for my latte. The latte had a nice sweetness, smooth & shocked me that it didn't have anything additional to it. The employees were very nice. we talked about a little bit about Korea, and we had some things in common there, and I ended up buying some beans because it tasted so delicious.

Google
Friends had suggested that this was a must visit to drink great coffee while in Tokyo. The coffee was great but I found the entire experience and manner in which they served you overly convoluted and pretentious tbh. There are plenty of places that serve great coffee without all the fanfare unless you love this kind of thing, in which case you'll probably love it.

Google
They do know their coffee.... I had ordered a double shot cappuccino of a bean variety that they did not recommend as a double/extra shot... they were very correct as it was too bitter and not drinkable.. then I pretended it did not happen and ordered what they suggested for an oat milk cappuccino, and it was excellent. It is a bit small inside and some people talk too loud... come early and it will be nice as this is one of the few good cafés in Tokyo that opens early, 8AM.... when I was there most of the beans were from Colombia, which I can get nearly farm fresh where I am from. It was very good for a cafe, perfectly done...

Google
Hands down one of the best coffee spots in Tokyo. The beans are roasted beautifully with distinct aroma and depth, and what really impressed me is how each latte—made with different beans—tastes completely unique. The milk never overpowers the coffee, and you can really appreciate the subtle flavors in every cup. It’s a small space and often has a line, but absolutely worth the wait. A must-visit for serious coffee lovers!

Yelp
Stopped in for a cup of coffee and was immediately greeted by the staff and walked through what blend would be best for me. My drink was the absolute best cup of coffee I've had in Japan!!

Yelp
Incredible! My friend told me to pick up some beans for their coffee shop in Toronto so they can start a coffee club so I obliged. The staff look like high end bartenders, the space is small but this roastery is known for their quality and unique takes. I got one that said Pina Colada, they used some lacto-ferment process with the beans. One of the things I like about this place is that you can smell all the beans and they all smell so unique and completely different from each other. For 150g of beans it cost around 3600 yen+ , the display is in glass jars but they can vaccum seal it for you. They're also known for their Pour overs 2000 yen is a bit steep for a pour over but you're trying one of the best. Coffee lovers must save and make a pilgrimage here. They typically do light to medium roast, so don't come here if you want dark roast.

Yelp
While I personally enjoyed my experience here, I personally would only come once. It's definitely overpriced but it's actually really interesting and the staff are all very friendly. My Brother actually tried it before and has the same feeling as me about it. It's just a little too expensive but I actually liked it. I love the vibes of the coffee shop and how they take their time to explain all the details for each coffee beans. You also get to smell all of it from most expensive to cheapest. I just went to the middle ground and they would ask you how you would like the coffee, and I just went with what they recommended for the beans that I picked.

Yelp
I failed and didn't look up the reviews before hand. Glitch was recommended by a friend. Arrived a little after 10 am and the wait was long and a hour. I have never waited in line that long for coffee. Go before they open, preferably 30 minutes prior. This is an experience, they have a large assortment of beans to choose from and they'll ask if you want latte or drip. You can choose the beans for your drink and they'll carefully craft. The customer service was nice. Small and cozy little shop. Prices are steep. One latte and drip were about $39. But danngggg the quality is out of this world. I'm not even a coffee drinker and this was the best coffee I've tasted period. The drinks are tiny and pure. No bitterness at all.
google avatar

Bridget M.

Yelp
This place was worth the wait. The whole process from ordering to taking the first sip was wonderful. I loved being able to pick out of the variety of beans. I chose the iced latte option. The coffee was so smooth and tasted delicious. I liked the vibe of inside the cafe too. It was a little busy so my friends and I left once we had our coffee. We all enjoyed the flavors we chose. I'd go back again!
google avatar

David Y.

Yelp
Glitch is one of the best coffee roasters I've been to - incredible selection of different types of beans that were roasted with different styles and innovative techniques, like the whiskey barrel aged beans, which was the one I had. The coffee is also provided in great cups and vessels depending on what you order (cold or hot). The baristas there offer some great suggestions based on what you like (light to dark roasted), and will share what's popular if you're unsure about what you want. Seating is plenty but can get pretty crowded.
google avatar

Yelp
It's hard to describe how life changing and amazing this coffee was. Pour over coffee is king here, instead of ordering from a menu, you smell the beans and choose a flavor profile you like. Then, a careful pour over is done and the coffee tastes unlike any coffee I've had in my whole life. Some of the coffee was so floral or fruity that it tasted like tea instead of coffee, absolutely insane. A must visit. Friendly service and a cool ambience as well.
google avatar

Sarah P.

Yelp
Glitch was recently voted one of the top rated coffee roasters in the world and you can tell why. They give so much care and attention to each customer and each cup of coffee. The coffee, of course, was delicious but the experience could also not be beat. Certainly recommend!
google avatar

Gwen M.

Yelp
Very cool, unique coffee experience. They offer a huge variety of light roasted beans. You can enjoy the aroma before ordering your coffee. They do not offer lattes if I remember correctly. Just plain coffee Service: very personalized and friendly Ambiance: humid during summer. Cozy

Yelp
Ngl this place was getting renovated not sure if it was open but I was super sad because it looked like yum yum in the Tokyo tokes Walking there was a breeze and the surroundings were nice if you like the usual Tokyo vibes
google avatar

Eric L.

Yelp
If you go to other social media outlets, you'll see that this is an extremely hyped coffee. The thing is, is it overhyped? I would say (for sure) no. I don't know what they do to their coffee roasts but when it says "guava" and "fruity" flavor... you actually taste the fruit. It's not like a "hints of" you see on wine descriptions. The staff here was awesome as well. The person we talked to spoke perfect English for conversational as well as coffee jargon. Their suggestions hit the mark and I had to have self restraint before I spent hundreds of yen here. It's going to be on my "Must go to" list for Japan.
google avatar

Melissa L.

Yelp
FYI: I noticed the coffee beans are listed least to most expensive per cup from left to right, if this is helpful. the selections also may be different from the ones other people posted - I was looking forward to certain beans I saw in pictures but it was not one of the offers when we went last week. my review is probably not super reliable because I don't have the refined palate to taste all the tasting notes of the coffee. maybe if we tried the more expensive beans I might have worked out the flavors, but we tried two pourovers on the other end of the spectrum (Colombia Huila Monteblanco and Costa Rica Llano LA) and I did not really get anything unique from the taste (though they did smell nice). It was a unique experience overall though, and the baristas are obviously very knowledgeable and passionate about coffee. most of the clientele seem to be other tourists while we were there ^^;;

Yelp
This is coming from the perspective of a tea person who's just learning about espresso, with a friend enthusiastic about coffee; I give this one about a 4.5/5. About a 30 minute wait at 4 pm on a Tuesday. It's small with an industrial, minimal hipster feel with multiple bar seats and three tables. The coffee is extremely aromatic and should be treated like a wine. Each coffee was multidimensional and tasted differently straight vs aerated in my mouth, with different notes. My favorite was the Colombia monteblanco with the white chocolate, caramel, coconut, cantaloupe and butter notes. The second was Ethiopia sky project with grape, date, chocolate, lavender and brown sugar notes. The third I tried was the Costa Rica El Jordan which was very fruity with blood orange, violet, raspberry, red wine notes. Each were different and complex in their own way. Overall, a nice experience.

Yelp
Definitely our favorite coffee experience in Japan! The line here starts early; we arrived a few minutes after opening and a line already formed outside. Once we were inside, we were shown various categories of beans, from rare to award winning. The baristas did give us suggestions based on whether we wanted a pourover or a milk-based drink. We ended up going with two of their recommendations for a cappuccino and a cortado and sat at the bar to watch them make the coffee. The drinks tasted amazing! We ended up ordering a pourover after to try another bean. Great experience, would recommend for any coffee enthusiast. Note that this review is for their Ginza location, which doesn't seem to have a Yelp page yet.

Yelp
Glitch is such a fun and involved experience. They take each customer individually, and do a mini interview to see what you enjoy most about coffee beans. You get to smell many kinds of beans from all of the world and some beans are very rare and hard to find. Then you have the choice of getting the bean you choose made into an espresso/latte or drip. The Glitch Team was so helpful with advice and recommendations based off of our preferences. Aside from the fantastic coffee the ambiance is really relaxed and intimate.
google avatar

Nicholas H.

Yelp
Easily some of the best tasting coffee I've ever had, and I have had a lot of coffee. Specifically, the Colombia Santa Monica Jairo Arcila is some of the most interesting coffee I've ever had. Very fruity and almost doesn't even smell like coffee. It's hard to describe!
google avatar

Lynn A.

Yelp
The espresso was very good and the baristas are very knowledgeable and friendly. I really appreciated their help and input. I did not expect an espresso shot to cost 2000 yen, so about $12 USD. There weren't prices listed for a shot of a espresso, so I was VERY surprised to spend $24 on two espressos. Maybe if the prices were clearly listed, I wouldn't have had a problem with it. They did have prices listed for pour over flights, but not for espresso.

Tess S.

Yelp
Expensive but 100% worth it! They don't sweeten their coffee and you don't even need to. The depth of flavor is so delicious you savor every sip of coffee. I had a latte (the milk in Japan doesn't bother my sensitive stomach) and it was fantastic. Must try!
google avatar

Mari T.

Yelp
My favorite coffee shop in Tokyo (or possibly my favorite out of all the places). Wide variety of coffee beans to choose from. The baristas there are very knowledgeable on coffee and give you good recommendations based on your preference. If you love black coffee (like I do), I would highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Jorge C.

Yelp
Best coffee I've ever had. If you're in the area this is worth the visit, but be prepared to wait in line (even outside the door) and then equally for your coffee. This is all about quality and purity of the coffee, so if you're looking for espresso-based drinks it may be better to skip. While they make espresso-based drinks, the coffee is meant to have pure as a pour over. You won't see milk, cream or sugar anywhere as the coffee is meant to be enjoyed by itself. Sit at the bar to get a firsthand view of the coffee making experience. They also have a few pastries available each day like banana bread, scones, and croissants. On the high end, be prepared to pay 3,500 Yen for a cup of coffee, but they have other high quality beans available for under 1,000 yen. You're paying for the experience and high quality coffee, and it's worth both!

Yelp
Glitch was the first stop of our Japan coffee tour 2018. Even thought it was the first, it was the best roaster out of the 15 shops we went to in 2 weeks, and we are still talking about it to this day. Glitch coffee isn't close to any JR station. We exited Kanda station and had a good 15 minutes walk before getting here. I am sure we could take the metro for a stop or 2, but it wouldn't gain too much time from it anyway. Upon entering, there were a few coffee beans to choose from. The staff was friendly to chat with. We ended up trying a cold brew natural ethopia and an ethopia geisha pour over (really rare!) That geisha is by far the best the best geisha we ever had. We immediately purchased a bag to take home (still very good after 2 weeks!) This definitely is one of my favorite roasters in Japan. I am looking forward to revisit this shop again in my next japan trip

Yelp
Very kind and knowledgeable! Great coffee and a lovely environment to hang out and sip in.

Jerry F.

Yelp
Every time I come here, I find the hand brew coffee to be too watery. Either it's underextracted or the coffee:water ratio is too low. Really meh as a result. And I've been drinking third wave coffee for decades now. Better than the average dark roast swill you find in the median Tokyo cafe, but still not actually good. I think there's an element of "Emperor Has No Clothes" here. There are way better pour overs you can get elsewhere. Note that this review only pertains to the hand brews / pour overs. I haven't tried their espresso based drinks.
google avatar

Karen V.

Yelp
From the moment you walk into Glitch Coffee you can immediately smell those coffee beans!!! On the counter you will be available to see their beans sample and some of their beans have flowery or fruity smells. Though the shop is small you can easily feel at home and savor your coffee. I recommend to visit not during busy hours. There is English speaking staff available.
google avatar

Angela T.

Yelp
I drink specialty coffee all over the world and Glitch is hands-down my favorite cafe ever. Their latte is incredibly sweet and delicious, always served at a perfect temperature and with style. The shop itself is unassuming but lovely on the inside, and the staff is friendly and helpful. They obviously have a genuine love of coffee and it shows. It can get quite crowded since it's a famous place, but I can usually manage to find a cramped seat, especially early in the day.
google avatar

Matt L.

Yelp
Excellent selection of coffee. Including some nice Geishas from Colombia and Nicaragua! They are pricy as all Geisha coffees are, but if you're into it it's worth it. I tried the Colombia geisha and it was full of flavor. The staff was very friendly and helpful in describing selection. The pastries also looked good but I did not try them, saving myself for the market!
google avatar

Aurora W.

Yelp
Nice and clean coffee shop. Pros: The iced or hot latte Con: The espresso Good and not so good experiences here. Prices are on the higher side for coffee, but the seats were comfortable and overall the environment/ vibe is casual and relaxing. My friend ordered the ice latte which was my favorite of all the drinks there. It had the perfect blend of coffee, milk, and sweetness. My other friend (unfortunately) ordered their espresso and it was sour. I'm not sure if it was the type of coffee beans they used, but it was SO SOUR. Like on the level of lemon sour. Of course, my friend did not enjoy it.
google avatar

Caroline K.

Yelp
I heard about this place and made a trek out here. I walked quite a bit from the station in the frigid cold. I popped in the warm & cozy store and the workers were nice and spoke some English. Glitch isn't too far from the imperial palace! I ordered the Colombia Geisha because that's been the rave. It tasted great. The only thing is that they don't have the prices for the pour overs. Dumb me go so excited and ordered without asking the price. The Colombia Geisha can cost you close to $15 USD. It was vacation so I decided to just splurge...
google avatar

Roy A.

Yelp
I walked here from the hotel, a nice picturesque walk outside the walls of Imperial Palace. As I approached I smelled the great aroma of coffee being brewed. I walked in and friendly staff assisted me with a cold latte. I promptly grabbed a bar stool and watched people heading to work. I logged into the free WiFi and enjoyed a great drink. Make the journey for a great experience.
google avatar

Robert Elijah Pearce F.

Yelp
I don't know if the food/coffee here is any good yet because I just ordered and am waiting but one of the baristas here is soooooo hot so I decided to just go ahead and give the place five stars. Aside from that, it's hip and minimalist in her life and there's like a cool map of coffee from around the world. Update: just got the coffee and it's sooo tasty.

トモ Tomo Toro E T.

Yelp
A coffee specialist that roasts their own beans near Jimbo-cho Station. Tokyo is changing. Of course, you knew that. Actually, what many visitors to Tokyo does not know is that the core culture of each neighborhood is very sticky. Certain area has many new trendy shops, while others have many chain cafes. This Jinbocho area has traditionally been office buildings. Not so many cool shops pop up here. It has a very old traditional feel; quite the opposite from areas like Shibuya. People come to this area because they "have to", not because they "want to". I had a glitch in my memory bank about this coffee shop. I wrote this review 9 days after my first visit and could not remember why I was in Jimbocho. I vividly remember coming here with Tokyo Community Manager Rika N. and remember the contents of our meeting. However, why would we be here? For the life of me, I really thought that the pin location on Yelp was wrong. There is no way that this cool and trendy coffee shop would be at this spot. Rika and I hit many cafes (sometimes more than one in a meeting), so I was starting to get confused. Then I remembered, we had a meeting with a beverage company in this neighborhood. I know that the readers doesn't care, but I am writing this for myself. My reviews are mainly for my future memory assistance. The pin is at the right location. In April 2015, GLITCH opened at this location, where you would think that most of the people in the area 7-Eleven coffee drinkers. Would people pay premium prices for excellent tasting hand dripped coffee? We will see. GLITCH means: G global L life I innovation T team C customer H high quality Coffee: I tried their Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Natural dripped coffee using Hario V60 (480 Yen). Very good! On the same day, you could get another cup for 50% off. Seats: Indoor seating available. 3 counter stools. One table for 4 people in the middle of the store next to their roaster. There was a bench seat just outside the store. Issues: I did wish they had a better selection of sweets. I wanted something sweet, but the only thing they had were peanut butter sandwich roll. Chocolate bagel looked interesting, but too filling for me. Smoking: Non smoking, I think.
google avatar

JonLuca D.

Yelp
Great coffee shop! Love the ambience and care they put into the locale. They clearly care deeply about the coffee as well. It's on the higher end price wise but definitely worth it.
google avatar

Jarrett D.

Yelp
Some of the best coffee in Tokyo. I was here on my last trip and couldn't wait to come back. Today I had the Ethiopia guji pour over. Service is always very friendly.
google avatar

Yoshiyuki O.

Yelp
I like taking a break while eating sweets and coffee in this cafe. There are so many sports and musical instrument stores around here. If you're tired from shopping, I think it's good to take a break here.
google avatar

Kenneth B.

Yelp
This is my neighborhood coffee house when staying in the Kanda Jimbocho area! Small menu with no extra fancy sugary drinks - simply great tasting hot & cold selections using their own in-house roasted coffee. Small selection of pastries, small number of seats, but big on taste and friendly treatment of guests. Get the point card - you will return!
google avatar

William L.

Yelp
Glitch Coffee is hands-down my favorite coffee shop in Japan and one of the best, if not the best, I've been to in the world. I have to go here every time I travel to Tokyo. Nestled in the middle of a business district in Jimbocho, Kanda, Tokyo, Glitch is in an absolutely inconvenient location, but I'd say it's absolutely worth it for coffee enthusiasts with time to spare to go to. Their coffee options like espresso or milk drinks like lattes and flat whites are all great options. The real reason to come here, though, would be their pourover bar. At any given time they will have 6-8 coffee bean options at the front of the shop that you can choose from to get a pourover made. They have always made interesting-tasting coffees for me with these beans. Aside from the location, the thing I can see faulting them for is price. Glitch is quite expensive - their espresso and milk drinks aren't too out of line with any other specialty coffee shop in Tokyo, but their pourovers cost anywhere from 600-2400 yen, and their coffee beans, which are also fantastic, cost 1800-5000 yen for 100-150 grams. So to coffee enthusiasts, I'd say it's a five star shop, just be prepared for some higher than average prices. For everyone else, I would probably say don't go out of your way - there's really nothing else around so Glitch would have to be your reason for coming to this area.
google avatar

Barrett I.

Yelp
It's a small little trendy coffee shop just off of the main street with all the old bookstores, music and ski/snowboarding shops. Seating is extremely limited and tight, so don't plan on being here for a while. The coffee is all slow dripped in front of you, and it's fresh. My only complaint would be that they have almost no selection of dark roast coffees. The staff of 2 are pretty friendly so you are able to have a conversation with them while they prepare your drink. If you're looking for a small, neighborhood coffee shop, this is probably the go-to in the Jimbocho area.
google avatar

Eric C.

Yelp
Nice neighborhood coffee joint. They roast their own coffee. Staff are friendly and well versed in their coffees. Most are roasted lightly to maintain their light floral notes. Be aware that you will not find strong and bitter roasts here, they focus on gentler roasts. Food is a few pastries and some sandwiches, though I usually pop in after lunch.
google avatar

Josh A.

Yelp
This place is incredible. Coffee roasted in house and fantastic baristas who deeply care about coffee. The place is small and cozy, and has WiFi!! If you're near the Imperial palace, do yourself a favor and take the quick walk over here. They also have an amazing chocolate bagel.
google avatar

Eric H.

Yelp
Great hip coffee shop with lots of options for single origin beans in V60, cold brew, or espresso form. Great coffee and nice baristas
google avatar

Ben H.

Yelp
This probably a great coffee shop, but the quality of the coffee depends on who is working. Whoever made my espresso this morning had no idea what they doing. It was literally the worst coffee that I've had in years.

K. G.

Yelp
A third wave coffee shop. You can enjoy light-roasted coffee here. The Ethiopia \1400/150g smelled fruity strongly. Although the liquid coffee was sour as expected, I never felt bad as is typical for light-roasted coffee. It was good with sugar. The iced Americano coffee ¥450 was light-roasted as they claim. But it was good that it was not so sour and I never felt bad.
google avatar

Joanna K.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this amazing coffee shop on our way to the imperial palace. The place is small but has a gear ambiance. The barista were very knowledgeable and assisted me in english. Coffee was of course delicious!
google avatar

Matt S.

Yelp
Nice vibe and atmosphere and many choices of beans. Staff is really friendly. Small place so can be a challenge to get a seat. I recommend it but they do use a bit less coffee them other places resulting in lighter cup. Full of flavor but if you are looking for something really strong you might want to the barista know.
google avatar

Kirsten A.

Yelp
Delicious coffee, great service, there will likely be English speaking staff when you visit. One of the first times I could actually taste the "notes" of flavors that so many coffee roasters talk about. Small selection of pastries which are so-so but you likely won't come here for the food. Lots of windows to sit and watch the salaryman routine come to life in the morning during rush hour, as you drink your delicious beverage!

Mike L.

Yelp
Probably one of the best lattes I have ever had. Somehow extremely light and fluffy, while being well blended. Cool vibe too.
google avatar

Seyma A.

Yelp
I wouldn't say I'm a coffee snob but I do avoid chain coffee shops and I must say this was some of the best coffee I've ever had. I had their iced latte and it was so rich but so smooth. I still haven't stopped thinking about it. The staff and the ambiance was also on point.
google avatar

Linda T.

Yelp
went out for a light walk around the neighborhood and was in search for some morning coffee. this place looked super chill and cool so stopped by for a cup of hand crafted coffee. the barista seems to know his coffee and the differences in taste and regions. got a cup of what he recommended and it was tasty. they have some food items but not much. interior is small but cool. tasty coffee to start the day!
google avatar

Yoko Y.

Yelp
Small coffee place. There is no sign so it might be hard to know it's coffee shop. Staff is very friendly and coffee is very good. Jimbocho-city doesn't need Starbucks. I've never had such great coffee.
