Gochu Gang - Review - Walthamstow - London - The Infatuation
"Spotting Gochu Gang’s bright yellow and blue frontage is like seeing a lighthouse appear in a storm. Or, at least, a tasty, reliable Korean takeaway spot on a miserable day. The burger, with crispy Korean fried chicken, creamy tangy slaw, and sweet brioche buns from another local Walthamstow favourite, Suba Bakery, is our repeat order. The boneless chicken is also good (get the sweet and spicy sauce), but the tteokbokki can be a little tough, and the McCain fries are just fine. Gochu Gang is a great spot to know about when you’re in the area and having the kind of day that only a decent takeaway can fix.
Food Rundown
Boneless Chicken
The wings are good, but with this boneless option you get more meat—which is crucial with crispy batter as thick as this. You’ll get the option of sweet and spicy, soy garlic, honey butter, and salt and pepper. We’ve tried them all—in the name of science and research—and can tell you that they all hit. Our personal favourite, though, is the sweet and spicy, with honey butter coming a close second.
Gochu Gang Burger
If you’re only getting one thing, make it this burger. The bun is a step up from your regular neighbourhood takeaway spot, the spicy mayo plays nicely with the slightly sweet, slightly spicy sauce, and the slaw is pleasingly crunchy and tangy.
Tteokbokki
The line from pleasantly chewy to tough is sometimes crossed with this tteokbokki. It’s not the easiest dish to transport and is really best eaten fresh. The sauce, which has a real heat to it, is delicious, though." - Sinéad Cranna
