A century-old temple that carries the collective memories of three generations across various regions of Penang. It is hoped that this heritage will endure and continue seamlessly without interruption

A Beautiful and Peaceful Historic Temple This Kuan Yin temple is over 100 years old and absolutely worth a visit. The moment you walk in, you can feel the deep sense of peace and spirituality. The temple is beautifully maintained, with detailed architecture, serene altars, and a calming atmosphere that makes you want to stay and reflect. It’s clear that this place has been lovingly cared for over the years. The craftsmanship in the carvings and decorations is truly impressive, and the surroundings are clean and welcoming. Whether you come to pray, make an offering, or just admire the history and beauty, this temple is a meaningful experience. Highly recommend stopping by if you’re in the area. It’s not only a religious site, but also a cultural treasure.

Though not like many other more stunning Buddhist temples across Aisa, it certainly has the unique charm to be fully localized in its one way.

A good place to visit and pray to the goddess of mercy. You can buy the offering items at the counter. It can get in a little smoky outside. Inside is ok. There are shops outside selling giant incense sticks and other items for praying. You can also buy a red lantern to hang for good fortune. Do note there are quite a number of pigeons which can be a bit of a nuisance.

The Goddess of Mercy Temple, also known as Kuan Yin Teng or Kong Hock Keong stands as the oldest Chinese temple in Penang, serving as a significant religious and cultural landmark for the local Chinese community since 1728. Originally dedicated to Mazu, the sea goddess revered by Hokkien seafarers, the temple transitioned its primary devotion to Guan Yin, the Buddhist Bodhisattva of Mercy, by the early 1800s. This shift reflected the changing demographics and spiritual needs of the growing Chinese immigrant population in Georgetown. Beyond its religious functions, the temple historically served as a communal hub and a neutral ground for mediating disputes between different Chinese dialect groups, notably the Hokkien and Cantonese communities. Its role as an arbiter continued until the establishment of the Penang Chinese Town Hall in 1881.

Very pretty and beautiful place. No entrance fee, just donate what you like! Free joss sticks and great for praying. Beware lots of pigeons hanging around outside, and lots of smoke that can irritate the kids.

Yelp
Strolling around Georgetown, I stumbled upon this temple. Goddess of Mercy Temple in Georgetown is the oldest and most legendary temple in Penang. On the eve of Chinese New Year believers of the Taoism and Confucianism arrive at the temple to pray to the Goddess Kuan Yin for good health and luck throughout the new year. It was first built in the 1800s by the Hokkiens and Cantonese residents nearby. Even before entering the courtyard, there's a strong air of sandalwood incense. I admit it was a bit much for soo I found it hard to stay very long for my visit. These joss sticks ranged in size, some were almost like small tree branches. I did get lucky that day and there wasn't a crowd. There were a few small vendors in the courtyard. I did find the courtyard not quite as clean as the other temples I had been to. The roof was also not as adorned in dragons and other intricate sculptures. Overall this temple is more simple, not the showy red and gold as the others.

Yelp
If you travel to Penang island off of Kuala Lumpur, you should check out the Goddess of Mercy Temple. The temple is nestled in the main town of Georgetown. It is close to the Blue Mansion so you can knock two birds off with one stone. The temple is dedicated to the Goddess Guan Yin. The temple is stunning and I would have taken pictures, however, there were a lot beggars in front of the temple. Though, do not let that to stop you for visiting the temple. I went into the temple to pay my respect to the Goddess as I love going to temples. I closed my eyes and centered myself for prayer when I saw energy emanating from the the goddess coming straight towards me. I have never seen this before. It was a nice surprise. Think unconditional love energy waves coming towards you. It made everything else feel petty. Please do visit the temple and experience the radiance of this temple when in Penang.
