God’s Bridge is one of those Teesdale gems that feels a little bit magical. The River Greta flows beneath a natural limestone arch, and the sound of the water echoing under the rock is incredible. We walked here from Bowes village, starting near the old castle, following the Pennine Way beside the river through peaceful fields and open moorland. The path is clear and gentle for most of the way, with just a few muddy sections after rain.
There’s a shorter route option from a lay-by on the A66 if you just want to see the bridge itself, but the full walk from Bowes is much nicer, you get a mix of scenery, wildlife, and even a hidden waterfall near the end called Mill Force. It’s all part of what makes this area so special.
Best visited on a dry day with walking boots, and take care on the rocks near the river as they can be slippery. There are no facilities here, which adds to the sense of peace. If you enjoy quiet walks, nature, and real North Pennines landscapes, it’s well worth a visit.
