Gogol Restaurant in St. Petersburg is a restaurant styled as a 19th-century writer's apartment, with an atmosphere of Russian classics. The interior includes four themed rooms: a 22-person dining room with porcelain and still lifes, a 6-person train compartment-style sofa room, a 12-person living room with live music in the evenings, and a study with busts and books for business meetings.
The decor combines antique furniture, vintage details, and even a bird cage.
The menu is based on Russian cuisine with pre-revolutionary names: borscht on goose, salad with muksun, lamb cutlet, fish soup according to an old recipe, kulebyaka with salmon and white fish, and cherry dumplings.
I have mixed reviews: the atmosphere is great, the music is wonderful, and some of the dishes are excellent, but there are also dishes that are a disappointment: for example, I didn't like the borscht, the cucumbers were overcooked with poor-quality ingredients, and the salad with Baku tomatoes had an interesting taste, but the tomatoes themselves were limp.
This is a place for lovers of historical aesthetics and Russian cuisine. I definitely recommend a visit. Order goose borscht, kulebyaka, herring with potatoes, and jelly with mustard.
The menu is uniquely designed and stylized to look old, with quotes from Nikolai Gogol.
