A super aesthetic Japanese spot in Fitzroy. They open at 12 PM. I came for lunch without checking the time, but luckily a quick walk around the area killed the wait.
The space is clean and calming. 2 seating areas: the front room with lots of natural light from the glass windows, and the inside area with big tables plus counter seats facing the open kitchen; you can watch the chefs cook. I chose a window seat because I love eating while watching people, and the bright light also makes the whole dining experience nicer.
We were two people and ordered two dishes. Total was $51.
- Kogashi Miso Ramen: Their signature ramen. Before ordering, the staff warned us that the broth is thick and oily - part of their unique style - just to make sure it fits your taste. For me, it was delicious: salty, smoky broth; tender pork (not yet melt-in-your-mouth, but soft enough); noodles are standard, not handmade. Overall, the best ramen I had during my 2 weeks in Mel.
- Karaage Chicken Curry Rice: Rice was fluffy and soft. The curry sauce was great; not the typical flavor of instant curry blocks; you can taste the sweetness from the veggies. Downside: the karaage wasn’t crispy at all, and the batter was soggy.
I’d definitely come back to try more dishes next time.
