9 Places in Vermont to Go Before You Die—or After

"Most of the covered bridges in New England are known for their picturesque qualities, but Emily’s Bridge in Stowe, Vermont, has a more infamous reputation. Built-in 1844 to carry what came to be known as Covered Bridge Road over Gold Brook, “Emily’s Bridge” is a single-lane, 50-foot-long bridge. Its wooden frame is dark and weathered, and it was here, if the legend is to be believed, that a girl with a broken heart took her own life. In the mid-1800s, Emily was supposed to meet her paramour at what was then called Gold Brook Bridge to elope. When he never showed, it’s said Emily took her own life from the rafters of the covered bridge. In the ghost story that followed, Emily is apparently an angry specter. Tales of claw-like gouges down the sides of cars and other ghastly stories surround the bridge, including those of a strange voice emanating from inside the short tunnel. Interestingly enough, it’s not just called Emily’s Bridge by supernatural enthusiasts. The name has carried over into the tourist products of Stowe, whose shops sell quaint little postcards and souvenirs featuring the bridge against the cozy backdrops of fall and winter and labeled in beautiful script, “Emily’s Bridge.” Adapted with permission from The New England Grimpendium by J.W. Ocker" - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Cute covered bridge, not overly crowded, people took turns taking photos at front. Small pull off area once you go thru it. Not a great spot to get a side shot up less you want to climb down to the stream.

A nice little bridge with a creek running underneath, great for sunset pictures.

Love the charm of the Vermont covered bridges, especially in the fall! This is a cute little spot where you walk down to the creek and check out the brook on the rocks.

I really enjoyed my little jaunt to the Gold Brook Covered Bridge in Stowe! It was cool to hear the stories associated with this bridge, especially the spooky ghost story of Emily! She's said to still haunt this bridge to this present day! The Gold Brook Bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It's definitely worth taking a few minutes to admire its unique design and fun history!

My friend was driving and said “hmm… we haven’t seen a covered bridge yet,” so I googled and this popped up 2 miles away. Go to this. So lovely. We even saw a local couple cross it and stop in the middle to steal a kiss. ❤️

Beautiful Covered Bridge in Stowe. Worth taking a few minutes to park and walk around . Several viewpoints available. You can walk down the hill to get closer to the water and view the underneath of the bridge as well. Easy Access. However, plan to hike down the hill for even more gorgeous views of the stream & bridge.

Really cool history here. The take if this bridge is A young woman named Emily planned to elope with her love. Their meeting place was this same bridge. But when he didn't show, Emily, filled with despair, hanged herself from the rafters of the Gold Brook Bridge. Some really nice picture taking. I wish it were nicer out as it was pouring rain but it didn't put a damper on our excursion. Great bridge to visit with a lot of history and folklore around it.

Since we were in Stowe for a couple of hours, we decided to check out one of the local covered bridges on our way out of town. We couldn’t actually drive across it as our vehicle weighed too much…glad they had a weight limit sign😳. Cool bridge, nothing special.

Yelp
Stowe Vermont has so much to offer, including this very cool covered bridge not too far from the main drag. You can read about the history elsewhere, but some say this bridge is haunted. We visited during the day, and braved driving over it in our rental. There is a nice parking area just beyond the bridge to get your car out of the way and you can explore without being an obstruction to the public. The bridge itself is cool, dark and quiet. A stream below provides lovely sounds and you can scramble down there if you're confident and get another view of the bridge. We encountered nothing spooky or strange while we were there, but it was a fun little spot to visit.

Yelp
I read about this bridge on the great site https://www.atlasobscura.com/things-to-do/vermont#map and since I was in the area, made it a point to stop by. The legend of the bridge is that in the mid-1800's, a young lady was supposed to meet her paramour to elope. When he never showed, he took her own life, hanging herself from the rafters in the covered bridge where she now remains as a ghost. Haunting the bridge and causing scratches down the backs of pedestrian crossers. I stopped by and opted not to drive across the bridge but did quickly scamper across. Emily opted not to visit but I was definitely creeped out by the experience.

Yelp
Very intriguing history to this particular bridge. There was a break in the snowy weather, so we took advantage of the sunny day and made the drive from Burlington. Well worth it!

Yelp
My husband and I are suckers for anything history. We went out of our way to stop at this bridge. Absolutely beautiful and there is a babbling creek just below it.

Yelp
Famous covered bridge in Stowe. It's supposedly haunted by a young woman named Emily hence the bridge is also known as Emily's Bridge. You see this bridge on lots of Stowe postcards. Mobile reception is horrible out this way because of the mountains and rural population. Have a map or secondary GPS with you.
