"Most of the covered bridges in New England are known for their picturesque qualities, but Emily’s Bridge in Stowe, Vermont, has a more infamous reputation. Built-in 1844 to carry what came to be known as Covered Bridge Road over Gold Brook, “Emily’s Bridge” is a single-lane, 50-foot-long bridge. Its wooden frame is dark and weathered, and it was here, if the legend is to be believed, that a girl with a broken heart took her own life. In the mid-1800s, Emily was supposed to meet her paramour at what was then called Gold Brook Bridge to elope. When he never showed, it’s said Emily took her own life from the rafters of the covered bridge. In the ghost story that followed, Emily is apparently an angry specter. Tales of claw-like gouges down the sides of cars and other ghastly stories surround the bridge, including those of a strange voice emanating from inside the short tunnel. Interestingly enough, it’s not just called Emily’s Bridge by supernatural enthusiasts. The name has carried over into the tourist products of Stowe, whose shops sell quaint little postcards and souvenirs featuring the bridge against the cozy backdrops of fall and winter and labeled in beautiful script, “Emily’s Bridge.” Adapted with permission from The New England Grimpendium by J.W. I really enjoyed my little jaunt to the Gold Brook Covered Bridge in Stowe! It was cool to hear the stories associated with this bridge, especially the spooky ghost story of Emily! She's said to still haunt this bridge to this present day! The Gold Brook Bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It's definitely worth taking a few minutes to admire its unique design and fun history!

Not every place in Google needs to be a place to eat or lodge, American landscapes and pioneer industry long left behind are worthwhile visits and topics of conversation. The Gold Brook Covered Bridge is a simple but prominent staple in the Vermont country side. Settlers built covered bridges because they tended to withstand the weather much better than an open bridge. Some stood five times longer, needing less repair and upkeep. There is plenty of architectural consideration into these early bridges. Now this one has a ghost story that goes with it. I think it’s largely a tourist draw, which is sadly unnecessary. This bridge does not need a jilted bride trope to be an interesting location. You can see from picture number one - it has its own calling to majesty.

What a beautiful covered bridge! This was exactly what I expected to find in Stowe and it was free to see and we were by ourselves. Shame what happened to Emily being jilted and committing suicide.

Beautiful Covered Bridge in Stowe. Worth taking a few minutes to park and walk around . Several viewpoints available. You can walk down the hill to get closer to the water and view the underneath of the bridge as well. Easy Access. However, plan to hike down the hill for even more gorgeous views of the stream & bridge.
