9 Places in Vermont to Go Before You Die—or After

"Most of the covered bridges in New England are known for their picturesque qualities, but Emily’s Bridge in Stowe, Vermont, has a more infamous reputation. Built-in 1844 to carry what came to be known as Covered Bridge Road over Gold Brook, “Emily’s Bridge” is a single-lane, 50-foot-long bridge. Its wooden frame is dark and weathered, and it was here, if the legend is to be believed, that a girl with a broken heart took her own life. In the mid-1800s, Emily was supposed to meet her paramour at what was then called Gold Brook Bridge to elope. When he never showed, it’s said Emily took her own life from the rafters of the covered bridge. In the ghost story that followed, Emily is apparently an angry specter. Tales of claw-like gouges down the sides of cars and other ghastly stories surround the bridge, including those of a strange voice emanating from inside the short tunnel. Interestingly enough, it’s not just called Emily’s Bridge by supernatural enthusiasts. The name has carried over into the tourist products of Stowe, whose shops sell quaint little postcards and souvenirs featuring the bridge against the cozy backdrops of fall and winter and labeled in beautiful script, “Emily’s Bridge.” Adapted with permission from The New England Grimpendium by J.W. A lovely spot to pause, breathe, and learn a little history. There is ample space for several cars near the info sign, and you can get closer to the river if you wish to trek down the embankment. A great detour in any season, as long as you can get there!

Beautiful bridge! The small waterfalls underneath are so relaxing. We had a big truck so we had to find another way to get around the bridge so we can park. Worth the stop!

While in Vermont, I just HAD to see a covered bridge! I'm not one tiny bit romantic, but I am intrigued by local history. This bridge is reportedly haunted. You can read all about Emily before you (dare to) make a walk through. Very cool!

Beautiful historic bridge. It looks really nice during fall colors. It is free of chargea and 20 mins from Gondola in Stowe. Just park your car and take pictures. It will come out great

EMILY’S BRIDGE! After reading the folklore, I refused to drive or walk through the bridge out of caution/respect. Allegedly, some visitors have experienced feeling random bursts of cold air, being scratched, and hearing a woman’s scream. One member of my party laughed and said they don’t believe in spirits. However, that’s the very person who was freaked out when we saw a raven circling the bridge. Neat stop! Whether fact or legend, I appreciate the story and the curiosity.

The Historic Gold Brook Covered Bridge, also known as “Emily’s Bridge,” is one of Vermont’s most charming and mysterious landmarks. Nestled in a peaceful, tree-lined setting near Stowe, this beautiful wooden bridge feels like a step back in time. The craftsmanship is stunning — the old timbers, rustic trusses, and weathered boards tell stories of generations past. During the day, sunlight filters softly through the gaps, creating a warm, nostalgic glow perfect for photography or a quiet walk. The surrounding nature adds to its serene beauty, especially in autumn when colorful leaves blanket the road and trees reflect their golden hues. It’s a lovely place for travelers, couples, and history enthusiasts to pause and take in the tranquil scenery. However, what truly sets Gold Brook Bridge apart is its legend. Locals call it “Emily’s Bridge,” named after a ghostly tale that adds a touch of mystery to its charm. Whether you believe in the story or not, it gives the site a unique, haunting appeal. Overall, this bridge is a wonderful mix of natural beauty, local history, and folklore. A must-visit stop for anyone exploring Vermont’s countryside and a perfect spot to capture peaceful, timeless moments. 🌉🍂

People love covered bridges! Lol sadly hard to get a great photo with how everyone is parked! Be sure to look into the a “spooky” story behind it!

Yelp
If you are already in Stowe, you might as well make your way over to this bridge and take a photo. Luckily it wasn't raining when we went.

Yelp
Stowe Vermont has so much to offer, including this very cool covered bridge not too far from the main drag. You can read about the history elsewhere, but some say this bridge is haunted. We visited during the day, and braved driving over it in our rental. There is a nice parking area just beyond the bridge to get your car out of the way and you can explore without being an obstruction to the public. The bridge itself is cool, dark and quiet. A stream below provides lovely sounds and you can scramble down there if you're confident and get another view of the bridge. We encountered nothing spooky or strange while we were there, but it was a fun little spot to visit.

Yelp
I read about this bridge on the great site https://www.atlasobscura.com/things-to-do/vermont#map and since I was in the area, made it a point to stop by. The legend of the bridge is that in the mid-1800's, a young lady was supposed to meet her paramour to elope. When he never showed, he took her own life, hanging herself from the rafters in the covered bridge where she now remains as a ghost. Haunting the bridge and causing scratches down the backs of pedestrian crossers. I stopped by and opted not to drive across the bridge but did quickly scamper across. Emily opted not to visit but I was definitely creeped out by the experience.

Yelp
Very intriguing history to this particular bridge. There was a break in the snowy weather, so we took advantage of the sunny day and made the drive from Burlington. Well worth it!

Yelp
My husband and I are suckers for anything history. We went out of our way to stop at this bridge. Absolutely beautiful and there is a babbling creek just below it.

Yelp
Famous covered bridge in Stowe. It's supposedly haunted by a young woman named Emily hence the bridge is also known as Emily's Bridge. You see this bridge on lots of Stowe postcards. Mobile reception is horrible out this way because of the mountains and rural population. Have a map or secondary GPS with you.
