On the Grid : Golden Flower

"An oasis of Vietnamese cuisine located in the heart of Chinatown, Golden Flower mixes up the best batch of Pho Ga in the neighborhood. If you're really feeling special, try the Five Spice Chicken variation and strike up a conversation with the strangers you'll inevitably be seated next to at the jam-packed community tables. While visiting Reno and staying at Circus, we came across this place! Wow!! You know a place is gonna REALLY good when as soon as you walk in all tables are filled, people are chatting, smells amazing, and you see many long tables with Vietnamese people chatting after eating with their family. I knew it would be great, but it was better than that! Loved every bite. This place is unpretentious and straight to the point, tables, chairs and good food! Come hungry, portions are big 🎉🙌 I Will be back before I leave Reno!

This restaurant is absolutely amazing! My dad and I come here every time, and it’s hands down my favorite place to eat. We work at Mt. Rose Ski Resort, and after a long day, this spot never disappoints. The food is always fresh, delicious, and served quickly. Plus, there’s a great variety of dishes to try, so there’s something for everyone. Highly recommend!

Google
This review is about the Phō as we did not have anything else. For Reno it's probability the best Phō in town but I do have to try one or two more out of 5-6 that are in town. Service good, fast and attentive. Food arrived and looked good, broth was more substantial than others in town and had a nice taste with some umami. Ingredients were plentiful and lots of noodles in the large. I had the stake and tendon. Stake was a little to lean but still tasty. Tendon was soft and well done which made it almost melty. Came with lemon and I'm used to limes but I still liked it. Four peper slices spiced it up on all sides. Atmosphere was busy and almost like a large cafeteria which made it noisey so probably not not a good place for a first date but with kids great.

Didn’t expect to get good Asian food in Reno! Everything is fresh out from the pot, very hot and crispy! The servers do speak Chinese :)! They are pretty friendly. The environment is okay. You can tell it’s an old restaurant :) Thai tea is just have and fried rice are biggggg portion. The bill comes tipped already but its not crazy (and actually quite convenient since I don’t have to calculate it myself)

We were staying at Circus Circus and we didn't expect the restaurant to be literally across the street, just a minute or so to cross the street. We arrived right at 11am and the restaurant quickly filled up after. It didn't take long to see why people flocked here. The staff was so friendly and the food was amazing! We had the Pho and Chow Fun. I'm a vegetarian so I made the request to leave the beef out of the Chow Fun and the staff made an incredible vegetarian dish!

Google
Our first time at Golden Flower was late night (930pm) on a monday and they were open! We ordered the rare beef pho and the chicken pho, all with a side of spring rolls. The food was amazing exactly what we were looking for late at night. I would recommend checking out Golden Flower and we would come back the next time we are in Reno.

Google
Wanted a good Chinese food while in Reno. Located just outside of The Row. It's super convenient. It's a good sign when there are a lot of Asians in an Asian restaurant. We ordered the usual. House fried rice, ginger onion beef, cashew chicken, house chow fun, and sweet and sour chicken It was good enough for us to come back and try the pho lemongrass beef rice dish and the homemade potstickets are huge! All of those dishes were good too.

Google
Golden flower is my favorite restaurant in the city. The entire menu has zero misses, and I can confidently put my finger down randomly and enjoy whatever it lands on. The real star of the show is the #77 or flame broiled pork, which is just something special. This is a must try location in the biggest little city.

Yelp
This was on our radar as we've not eaten here in over two decades. We had to ask my sis who lives in Reno was it still in back of Circus Circus. We walked over in 100 degrees temperature close to 6pm tonight from our resort. The wait staff was very friendly and sat the two of us down. Before long we ordered and our food was delivered to our table. Ordered - * hubby got #11. Wor won ton soup with rice noodles. His order was humongous. He enjoyed immensely. * 9 times out of ten I go with grilled pork vermicelli noodles with imperial rolls. Mine was impressive. So much pork. And heaping noodles. Well worth it at $14. Our dinner tab including tax & tip was $41. What a deal. Don't let the average ratings hold you back from trying this restaurant. Plenty of tables with an adjacent parking lot.

Yelp
3.5 Stars but will bump up to the 4 for quick service, The food is solid, not terrible but not amazing. This is more of a place where you need to go because you don't have time and energy to go somewhere far, and you just need a quick in and out bite to eat. Came here with a large group as we were staying at the Silver Legacy nearby, and Golden Flower was the easiest Asian food fix for us. Pho - broth could have used a bit more spice flavor and it was definitely a thinner broth. The cuts of beef also were just okay and a bit chewy. Otherwise it was still solid as I've had much worse pho. Beef Chow Fun - Heavily sauced in a cornstarch gravy, but otherwise from the slimey texture it was flavorful and tasted pretty good. Spring rolls - Big spring rolls with a lot of filler but not flavor. Skip this next time. If you're in the neighborhood and want a no fuss easy in and out, then Golden Flower isn't as bad as the Yelp reviews makes it seems.

Yelp
Food great service the best in Reno The man with glasses was the kindest soul. He brought me extra soup--but not before politely checking that the $1 charge was okay. Then he delivered it steaming hot, filled to the rim, burning his hand slightly as it spilled. Still, he smiled warmly and gently warned me, "Be careful, it's hot." Service like that? We'll definitely be back!

Yelp
A friend suggested this place and we met for a late lunch on a weekend. It was around 1:00. Plenty of seating and service was friendly and quick. The parking lot was like deteriorating and old but the building itself was fine and clean. I was pretty overwhelmed with the menu but my friend knew what to order so I copied her. I guess their numbering system changed recently so we ordered what is now a 27. (See photo) bbq pork and imperial rolls with vermicelli noodles (cold bowl). Oh my goodness. The flavor! It was so great and so much food for around 15$. I don't have enough experience to describe the taste accurately, but I really enjoyed the cold bowl and the non super brothy-ness. It's only about 26 days later and I've already desired to go back for this dish multiple times. This will be my new treat to myself. Trust me on this. Just go blindly order #27. Slurp! Yum!

Yelp
Used to come to this place every time we were in Reno years ago. This was the place to go to all the time when we were in Reno. Since then we've been to other pho places in the Bay Area. I dunno if this has gone downhill or if I've just gone to better places over the years. We had the no 1 which for $14 is a great deal. The reason why it wasn't great was cuz the soup was not super hot. The meat was rare and the whole time I had dunked it in the soup it NEVER fully cooked. That kinda freaked me out. We also ordered the catfish in a clay pot which surprisingly came with a bowl of rice. The catfish wasn't super fishy but tasted a bit frozen. I did like the sauce which was a sweet and it was great on the rice. The servers were attentive in the beginning to get your order asap, but after that they hardly checked in. It's kinda a hole in the wall and the streets are a bit dark at night but there is a parking lot in the back. It's a popular spot with the locals but I think next time I'll see if there are other pho places in the area.

Yelp
Not the prettiest place in Downtown Reno but a great choice for Vietnamese and Cantonese food. Tables are all spread out so that you won't feel cramped. There's also a parking lot and plenty of street parking in quiet Reno. We had a very good Vietnamese Imperial Roll (5 to an order) that had a lot of filling but didn't really come with enough red leaf lettuce to wrap in, a unique chicken salad that had so much chicken, and the BEST Cantonese style beef stew (#118) in Reno. This is a Chinese version which has more braised tendon than an American beef stew but if you're Cantonese, you'll know what I'm talking about. May not satisfy a Western palette. Only comes with a single small bowl of rice - so you'll need another bowl. Easily feeds three. Worth going if you're downtown and want legit Vietnamese and Cantonese food. Service was also attentive.

Yelp
Not the best, but not the worst Asian restaurant in town. Conveniently located downtown, and more parking available behind restaurant! The honey walnut shrimp was good! I thought it was too much sauce just smothered on top. I had to scrape some sauce off, it was way too much. Imperial rolls were delicious! My absolute favorite here! Chicken pho was okay, just thought the chicken was too dry.

Yelp
This restaurant is consistently one of the best for a nice rejuvenating bowl of Phở! I also highly recommend the five spicy tofu - very crispy, like vegetarian chicken nuggets. The service is always wonderful and patient. The open dining hall is great for boisterous conversations with your friends. I make a point to stop in at Golden Flower every time I'm in town.

Yelp
A friend had raved about the Golden Flower the previous evening so 20 of us showed up for a lite afternoon snack the following day. Our Server was excellent and very attentive.  There were 8 of us at my table and we started off with Spring Rolls, Egg Rolls and Beef Chow Fun which was prepared exactly as I like it and then arrived the piece de resistance, the Beef Stew Noodle Soup, tender beef tendon served over noodles in a very savory and rich broth with vegetables and herbs.  The Golden Flower certainly met my expectations and I was not disappointed and will definitely be returning  in the near future.

Yelp
I was looking for a good Vietnamese Pho to fulfill my craving, I booked a hotel in Downtown Reno and did a searched in Yelp and this are the closest place in the area right next to Circus Circus casino. Yelp give this 3 stars, I was expecting it may be just one of those typical Pho. When I entered the free parking it was full.I went inside and the place has a larger capacity, It looks small from the outside and is about 75 percent to full. I got seated right away and look at the menu, I noticed they also served Chinese food but since this are a Pho place I ordered a large Pho rear steak and brisket # 3 and to my surprised this is way better than I expected, The broth is very tasty soothing you can really taste the spice and loaded with meat. I was full and very satisfied.Definitely this place in my opinion a 4.5 stars.

Yelp
Stopped in last night for some spring rolls ( IMHO Vietnamese spring rolls CRUSH Chinese spring rolls ) and order a staple / General Tsao chicken . Both were delicious and since this place has been here for like 50 yrs in the heart of DT Reno you know it has to be good . Dining room - meh, service - meh but the food .... Fabulous

Yelp
Classic Vietnam pho and bon Mai. Reasonable price great service. I'll be a regular. I had the bbq beef sandwich and the combo pho no tripe, coffee with condensed milk.

Yelp
Great service and friendly staff. The food is excellent, never had a bad meal. Always a clean and tidy restaurant.

Yelp
Eighteen of us came for dinner during Hot August Nights. Parking is easy and walking distance for our friends staying at Silver Legacy. The food is decent and prices are reasonable. It was my first time having shrimp spring rolls. The shrimp were large and the rolls were big. I loved the peanut sauce. The peppers gave it a little kick! I always order the No. 51. As soon as it arrives, I ask for a take out container and put half of my bowl into it. No. 51 is grilled pork over some vermicelli noodles along with carrots and an imperial roll. They are very generous with their grilled pork! With the Vietnamese fish sauce you pour over it, it makes for a filling dish. I love the fish sauce flavor and it's nice to have an imperial roll. Make sure to ask for a little container of The fish sauce. The restaurant can accommodate a lot of people. It's our go to place when in Reno for Hot August Nights. See you next year!

Yelp
Honestly, the food was pretty good, but during the holidays they gave me a different menu than what I saw online and everything was like like much more expensive on their holiday menu, even though the dishes were the same. I didn't quite understand that, but the flavors were on point and the portions were reasonable. The interior looks spacious and clean, and the staff was Fine. You're paying for convenience if you're going to the casinos and it was a very cold day and I was craving Chinese food so this definitely satisfied my cravings.

Yelp
I am very surprised at any negative reviews for this restaurant. I have been coming here for years. First off the food is delicious. I do order the same thing much of the time but other guests that have accompanied me have tried pho, Chinese, hot pot, and appetizers. All delicious. I love Mopo Tofu and this place has the absolute best by far out of many many tries at other places all the way to Palo Alto. The pork is flavorful and the sauce is addicting. I also always get the pad Thai along with it and it's so so yummy! Portions are large! They've always been friendly and remember us with smiles and humor. I highly recommend trying this restaurant . You will not be disappointed.

Yelp
Located right across the street from circus circus. Food is very good. I ordered the pho (brisket and tendon only). I was really shocked and surprised how good the pho was. Food came up fast. Service was great. Their roasted chili oil is bomb. Just wished the bowl was a little deeper. Was getting full after adding the veggies

Yelp
I love to come here for a quick lunch, but if they are busy you will have a wait for food, best to order ahead if you are in a hurry. Service is good and the food makes up for the noisy environment... can get very loud inside. I love the cold noodle dishes (51 pictured) or the rare beef pho. The calamari salad is huge and can be ordered as an entree, it is one of my dad's favorites. Potstickers are gigantic and spring rolls are always fresh with crispy lettuce!

Yelp
We hadn't visited Golden Flower in some years due to a precious experience. We decided to give it another chance. The service overall was slow. The staff was not very pleasant. At one point appeared to be arguing with a large party that walked in. We requested plates to share our food and were only provided one. We were asked if we wanted boxes to go and they were never brought. We had to request them at the cashier area ourselves The food overall was 2/5, lacked flavor. We will not be returning after this last visit.
google avatar

Yelp
The food is pretty good however if you are to go I strongly recommend you go in the morning time, after having gone numerous times in the evening I will not go back. The lady on the cash register wearing regular clothes majority of time is rude, completely stuck up and in my opinion is not someone who should be dealing with the public (I assume this is probably one of the owners) Again love the food but if I come back it will definitely be in the morning as I hope never to deal with that woman again. Below is the only picture I could find of her, beware!

Yelp
Great pho, which I base on broth mostly and this hits all the right notes. Classic atmosphere which feels very downtown quick, fast paced and efficient. The staff is so attentive and ready to help and serve in any thing!

Yelp
We where vacationing in Reno and came across this spot. It sure didn't disappoint the place was very clean and the staff was so friendly. I had the Pho with steak and brisket it was so good. My husband had the Mongolian beef and it was very flavorful with spicy kick. We also had crab rangoon with a sweet and sour sauce. Gracy our waiter was very attentive. If we're ever in Reno again we definitely will come back. Totally recommend this little hidden gem.
google avatar

Yelp
Love these Spring Rolls... to go! Perfect bite of rice noodle, cilantro, pork, shrimp and made most amazing by dipping in the Peanut Sauce. My suggestion is to add a bit of sriracha to kick it up!

Yelp
Visited 2/10/24 I've been coming here for years and I still have yet to find a Pho place in Reno that has better Pho than Golden Flower. Other places aren't horrible, but it doesn't match the taste or portion size than Golden Flower. The staff are very friendly and attentive. Plenty of tables to sit inside. Only downfall that I have is the pricing, it has gone up a lot. (I'm sure because of inflation) but honestly these 4 items and 1 beer was $74. :( We went about 3 weeks ago (1/24/24) and my fiancé always add shrimp to his and we only paid $2 more, this time it was $6 more. I honestly feel like the portion size can go down in order for the price to go down because we always have to go boxes after lunch. Nonetheless I highly recommend if you're looking for great food downtown, early mornings or late nights! Over the past 10yrs I've been coming the food/flavor has been consistently good.

Yelp
Everything is wonderful there !!! We love the BBQ MEAT We go here once a week !!! Hello Lilian .... Carol
google avatar

Mariana M.

Yelp
Their potstickers are the reason I come back. I ordered fried rice and curry beef stew. Unfortunately, the menu does not state this dish to be SPICY, and yet, the dish came out spicy. I asked the manager if they could make curry beef stew, not SPICY, and they said Yes, but only if I requested it. I had my dish taken back, and I'm not so sure I'll get what I'm hoping for. She said they are going to "wash" the beef and toss on NON-SPICY curry. Sometimes it is best not to know how something is made... My plate came back, I tried, and I liked it! I appreciate the effort. Have the person taking my order being attentive when I asked for "no Chilly and no onions" maybe she would let me know up front that their curry is normally spicy, and so request it to be made not spicy. Lilian was the person who took my plate back to the kitchen and got it fixed. She also suggested I try brisket #118 next time.
google avatar

Yelp
Always a great spot for Pho and they have a special Chinese menu. It's super central in reno. You will never be disappointed with their food. It's super delicious. They are always on top of refilling your water and your food gets out to you pretty fast! They also make your food to go and also do DoorDash. They have multiple tables so seating is always pretty fast as well. 10/10 recommend
google avatar

Edie B.

Yelp
The quality of taste (food) and service has gone down with a new owner ownership. Today we had Pho, Imperial Rolls and Pork Imperial. The Rolls were room temperature and the soup had to much noodles they did give me extra broth and charge me extra. The broth of the soup lacked flavor. I used to really like this place not anymore.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was delicious! Atmosphere is really loud but everything we ordered was good service was a bit hectic they were all nice We will go back the food was great!

Yelp
Basic ambiance, nothing special but decent. Food was very hot , fast and good flavor. Pho was good, some meat was really fatty. Very friendly service.

Yelp
8/19/2023- Saturday late lunch/early dinner.. First time visiting... Thanks fellow Yelper Raymond for posting a pic of the curry beef.. When I opened the door, was so surprised that ten tables were occupied.. Ordered the beef curry- generous portions of beef with a nice kick in the curry .. Imperial egg rolls-.served nice and hot.. perfectly fried and filled.. Got the sweet & sour lunch - I appreciate when the pieces of chicken are nice bite sized.. sauce was a nice dark orange- not like some restaurants that serve the terrible red sweet & sour.. Food came out promptly- service attentive.. I like how the plates are served family style so you can share the taste! Definitely would come back!
google avatar

Diane S.

Yelp
How have I not reviewed this place. My husband and parents love it here. I like the pan fried noodles!!! But really a lot of the food is good. They take card. Have condiments on the table and keep refilling the water
google avatar

Yelp
hi! first time here, and the food was wonderful. food consisted of overall quality and quantity. ordered the combination pho, the bowl was large, was not able to finish the bowl, large amounts of protein, and the broth was delicious. ordered the second dish pad Thai with added shrimp, the shrimp was huge, lots of protein, delicious with lime sprinkled over it. it does need a little more peanuts, but overall the restaurant is great. golden flower provides Vietnamese food, Thai food, and chinese all in one imo. with outstanding flavor. the service was great, food came out quick, and great for the value. i recommend.
google avatar

Ajna S.

Yelp
One of my favorite Reno spots. Casual and quick. The ramen is delicious and I always order the spring rolls. Tons of options for whatever you are craving. I've been coming here for at least 8 years!

Lisa H.

Yelp
OMG, I got over charged...... This is a dishonest restaurant that will find ways to overcharge you and the bill is totally different from the menu price. They try to get customers to pay in cash by adding extra charges.
google avatar

Dawn K.

Yelp
Haven't been to this spot in a minute. Sat through half of the Wolf Packs final home game of the season freezing our butts off!! Decided this was the perfect spot to go and warm up! We were greeted right as we walked in the door. The staff was friendly. The food was delicious like always!
google avatar

Yelp
It's been at least a year since we last came here. I ordered my favorite wonton soup #16 and added egg noodles. The wontons are fried and very tasty. The menu items are fairly pricey. 6 Pot Stickers are $13.50 as an example. My #16 was $16.75 The restaurant is fairly clean but I did observe they really don't sanitize the tables in between customers. The restaurant is almost full and is very loud with everyone talking. The food is served fast and fresh.
google avatar

Bradley K.

Yelp
Best affordable Vietnamese food in town. Location is not horrible. Staff is always nice. Food is consistent. I love the fried wontons. You won't be disappointed
google avatar

Brandy F.

Yelp
Be careful! They will charge you more if you don't pay attention to the details. They give you one piece of index finger size spring roll and charge you $12.
google avatar

Rob Y.

Yelp
It's been awhile since I've eaten at the Golden Flower. I'm so happy I returned. Lemon grass chicken is always a favorite and I think they make the best. I began with spring rolls filled with shrimp and pork , rice noodles and vegetables. They have a great crunch and dipping them in their peanut sauce was so delicious! Tsingtao beer is always a must for me too. The service was good, my waitress was right on point with everything, even keeping the table cleared as I finished things. I use chopsticks as it slows me down a bit so I don't wolf down my food. Their lemon grass chicken comes in bite sized pieces sauced deliciously with long strips of scallions. I finished it all along with the rice. Yum.. As I said it's been awhile, but I'm returning sooner rather than later.
google avatar

Vanessa D.

Yelp
Haters gunna hate in the reviews but the #77 is the best thing on the menu. Wonton soup was pretty good too. This definitely isn't the place you come if you want a nice romantic dinner but more of a quick lunch if you're in the area. Service is fast but the food never seems to be fully hot?
google avatar

Ryan W.

Yelp
TL DR if you're looking for a Vietnamese restaurant with late hours this would be the place to go but otherwise the flavor is lacking and service could be improved. Still in search of good Vietnamese food in Reno. I hadn't been to golden flowers in years. Frankly because I felt like their competitors offer better prices and most importantly the taste of the food is better. With it being a cold winter evening, I decided to give them a try. Pros: Regarding ambiance it looks much cleaner and more cohesively decorated than I remember. The condiments are organized in a nice manner in comparison to other Vietnamese restaurants in Reno. I also appreciate the late night hours provided by the establishment. Things to consider improving: I. Service was fast but it felt really abrupt, I was unsure if they were maybe backed up in the kitchen or understaffed, but I had to give my order 3 times. II. The food was the major factor in my rating. I ended up getting a cold noodle dish their #51 flame broiled pork and imperial egg rolls with noodles. The special sauce was nice (made with fish sauce) and wasn't too salty. Unfortunately the pork felt a little undercooked in some areas and lacked that char from a nice flame broil that I was anticipating. I had someone else from my party try the pork chop and they agreed it seemed a little under done. The flip side, the imperial egg rolls were way over cooked see picture below you can see the charred and blackened egg rolls. Even when eating around the burned areas it was bitter. Overall I wasn't impressed with the food. There were a lot of inconsistencies. I'm not sure if it's an off day but if you're truly craving Vietnamese cuisine it is my belief that there are better places elsewhere. As always I try to give businesses multiple opportunities so I'll try them again in the future and update accordingly.

Alan P.

Yelp
Love the food here, wish it was open late night like it used to be before Covid! Everything is clean and always full!
google avatar

NancyLynn S.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my dinner. I was so excited that I didn't take photos. I would definitely eat here again.
google avatar

Raymond L.

Yelp
Haven't been back here in a very long time due to covid permanently scarring their late opening schedule. This was my standard go to place prior to covid due to them opening quite late but covid affected so many great restaurants and many have not recovered. I can't understand why the recent experiences have been so noticeably negative. My experience has not changed one bit, from what I order, there is no change in the quality in their food, the only difference is the price increase but then everyone has went lock step and also raised their prices. The regular curry beef stew I used to always order have not changed much, the only difference is it doesn't seem as spicy as before but then again I haven't been here in quite awhile due to their closing time which doesn't coincide to my normal late eating habits. I feel nothing has changed in their food quality other than the price increase so it's not understandable why the recent negative experiences, my only assumption is people don't know what dishes to order.
google avatar

David O O.

Yelp
The food is really delicious and lots to select from on their menu. Service is quick and efficient. The ambience felt like a cafeteria more than a restaurant but we are coming back.

Yelp
Saturday afternoon was busy, make sure to walk up to the counter and write your name on the waitlist. Ordered their pho combination for $16.50. The bowl it comes in is a little shallow, but they load it up with tons of tender meat and noodles, so it doesn't accommodate room for enough broth. Would have loved my meat and noodles swimming freely in the bowl. Since they were busy we had to flag down for service. Not sure why they don't give children water unless you ask for it. Chili oil and straws are also available upon request. Walked up to counter to pay, they accept cards. Overall, the broth and pho were pretty tasty and especially satisfying on a cold day. Service was ok. Place is one large open space, with rows of tables and plenty of seating.

M B.

Yelp
What happened to this place, at one time this was the best place in town, now the food is sub parr at best , Old owner did a way better job on quality of the food I would go 2-3 time a week. I keep going back but always disappointed. Lady behind the counter is always rude. Should not be working with the public.

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
My mom, sister and I went there. The food took a while but it was absolutely delicious. It was fresh. The ambiance was cute. The service was fine. The Mongolian beef is Amazing! The Vegetable chow main was really good too.
