What a fun store. Not only do they have tons of things for my childhood in the 70s but they even have some museum displays. I found games and candy that I haven’t seen since I was a little. They also have some really unique and beautiful glass. It was tempting to buy out the whole store, but we behaved ourselves and came up with a few great things I could spend hours looking around in there, if nothing else.

Super fun place to shop for fun toys and gifts, specialty food, kitchen, and house wares. Huge fun variety, plus historic exhibitions of food and housewares. Fun place to visit, great place for gift shopping and candy.

I always have a wonderful time exploring this store & I have never left empty handed. Hats, kitchen gadgets, toys, amazing candies. We were just there yesterday and I want to go back today! The little museum upstairs is charming too. But seriously if you can go in this store and not find someone that delights you... you need to examine your life choices.

Another fabulous shop in Ferndale that's a feast for the eyes and overflowing with merchandise. You need a lot of time to explore the various things they have for sale ranging from Ferndale branded merchandise to kitchen items to candles to candy. The candy selection is one of the best I've ever seen!! Candy from the 70's such as pop rocks that you never see. It's a candy lovers paradise!

We needed a small paring knife and found one here, with the help of the friendly clerk. There is a very wide selection of kitchen and home things, as well as ice cream, milk and cheeses from A2/A2 milk. We sampled one cheese and it was delicious, with a mild milky flavor. We're on a road trip so didn't buy any food items. I'd like to come back for some if I was staying in the area.

This is my favorite mercantile store and the one I compare all others to. Great selection of hats, candy, kitchen goods, toys, and other assorted goodies. Employees are always friendly and helpful. Store is well stocked, tidy, and interesting.

If I only have time to visit one place in Ferndale, I make a beeline to Golden Gait Mercantile! You could spend over an hour browsing this wonderful store. It has local foods, bath & beauty products, unique greeting cards with vintage imagery, decorative notepads, kitchen gadgets, spices, teas, gifts for men, specialty goods from Europe... and that's just the 1st floor! Upstairs there are toys, more fun cards, and a very cool display of mannequins in historic scenes.

This is a wonderful, old fashioned store that you could spend all day exploring. The woman at the counter was SO-O-O helpful and I can't wait to go back again. Definitely a must visit when you are in Ferndale, and that town is also a Must Visit. The Victorian homes in the area are spectacular and the town is very charming,

Such a unique find here in Ferndale. Two floors of unique finds from locally made items, to crafts, candies, trinkets, clothing... and history. This place has it all. During Christmas there were plenty of gifts to find for all and we will be coming back all year round to purchase items for ourselves and for friends and family. Stop in if you're in Ferndale. Best kk around store in my opinion!

One of the best shops in Ferndale! The have a wide range of giftable (sp) stuff. The locally made lotion and soap is a good gift, and GG ships too. Vanilla Fig lotion/soap sounded intriguing. They have a nice selection of sweets too.

Wonderful store! Employees are always welcoming and kind. You will find a range of items from food , candy , cozy blankets , candles and children's toys . There's something for everyone.

Very friendly! Easy to communicate with. I have never been in the store, but placed an order to have a Christmas present delivered to Eureka, the day before Christmas Eve. I can imagine they were extremely busy, but didn't hesitate to help me with their online ordering process and assured me there delivery would be done that day. The recipient of the gifts loved it. This is by far, the best small town tchotchke store I've ever been to, and by that I don't mean they have a simple collection of stuff. They have everything you can imagine that you need, not just pretty, cutesy stuff. The owner clearly spends her life tending to this place. It's an emporium, it's a museum, it's a way-back machine and it's by far, the most fun you can have in a store of this kind anywhere. Oh, and here's a tip. Go for the candy! Good luck and have fun!

This is such a cute little store snuggled up in the heart of Ferndale! It gives off that old 1800s vibe and sells pretty much everything along with being a historical tour almost! They have these interesting mannequin set ups that show you what stores looked like back in the day! They have a large amount of sweets , my personal favorite the sugared ginger! Most things are affordable but things vary! A little dusty in there. The staff was so friendly and welcoming and it's an overall very friendly spot! Would definitely stop by again !

This place is the best: Sweets, treats, vintage treasures, hats, clothes, spices, old toys and even a built in mini-museum. I LOVE this place!!!

This was one of my favourite stores as a kid. It was always filled with fantastic candies, interesting antiques and friendly smiling shop owners. And in 20 years it hasn't changed a bit. During my last trip up to Humboldt, I stopped in to pick up some liquorice and soaps and fell in love with a pee wee herman 3d reel from their upstairs antique section. It's a ton of fun to browse the windows and the mannequins. I really love dropping in here as the service is always tops and they always have something to pick up to take home for the family. Mmm liquorice...

Fun, nostalgic, comprehensive selection of gifts, pretties, silly stuff, wonderful sweets, you name it! Wandered in before the final leg of the kinetic race, so glad we did. Root beer barrels brought back Sierra summer memories of scorching endless days at the pool. Great place to take visitors.

If you're looking for a cute little shop to look at then you've stopped into the right place. It's a 2 story blast from the past building filled with fun unique items. I spent over an hour looking at all the cute things they had. On the second floor, they have a mini museum of the Victorian times. This store is located in a beautiful small city called Ferndale. The little city is so cute with so many friendly people. If you want to step back in time then stop by this beautiful city. This little shop mostly sells candy from the past and present. It has antiques, vintage, new items from locals, and fun old brands of candy. There are antiques throughout the store to look at so take your time. The service we were given here was outstanding. If you love candy than this is your place!

I walked right by the store, but I'm always listening & when someone came out of the store & said to his wife: "I haven't seen this anywhere else" I had to go inside! Lots of cool things to look at & buy. I didn't have a lot of time because it was almost 5pm and the owner was ready to close so I tried not to take too long. He's been in business for 40 yrs & lives upstairs. Things I got in my short time: Humboldt Honey Star Thistle 14oz for $5.25. He also sells Clover & Wildflower. Someone before me got 2 jars of the Star Thistle & said it was the best he's ever tried. I wanted to buy more, B. wouldn't let me. Zimmerman's Homemade Jam Strawberry Rhubarb 16oz for $4.45 - made in Blue Lake, CA Flaherty Farms Wild Blackberry Bliss Jam 11.5oz for $6.75 - made in Ferndale, CA. I love this place! There is something here for everyone. They have so many different products from all over the world. There are antiques and a museum upstairs, but the main floor has all the yummy treats. Many candies, jams, honey, sauces, and cooking supplies. if you need a hat they have them too. Last year after Christmas I got Santa pasta here on sale. This year I bought a pumpkin spice cake mix which was too on sale. They have a good selection of British food staples too. I think anyone coming to Ferndale would enjoy this store. The owner is nice, and he always has an amazing selection of goodies. It is true that when I come in here I feel like I am a Victorian Kid in a candy/general store. Absolutely, This is a favorite shop of mine.

I stopped in here on a whim. It was an awesome store. I bought a ton of antique mason jars. The prices are fair and the owners are super nice. The range of products was great as well. When I go back to Ferndale I will definitely visit again. I suggest anyone in the area check it out.

We absolutely loved this mercantile! It had everything under the sun and then some! They had such unique little trinkets, dodads and candies. We spent a good hour in there and still didn't see everything. The employees were friendly, as well. I can't wait to visit again next time I come to town.

It's pretty hard to pick a favorite part of this store. Is it the old fashioned candy bar? The friendly employee who checked me out? The museum and old toys upstairs? Is it all of the vintage Americana and antiques? Is it the endless jam and jerky and snacks that satisfy every snack craving? Whatever it is, Golden Gait is my favorite store in ALL of California, and it's a must see if you're ever on the California North Coast.

Love love love this place. My teenagers loved our visit to this store. They just beamed from ear to ear with all the treasures they discovered. They ended up wanting pocket watches of all things. We bought 2 & then had to go back to buy a 3rd after walking around main street. Must go here when in the area.

Such a fun place. European candy, unusual items, and useful things. Two stories. Just a great place to spend some time. Friendly staff and it is a really clean and organized place, considered how much it has.

Like taking a step back in time, the Mercantile has an excellent variety of unique gifts and treats both old and new. There seems to be something for every one here. Lip balms, perfumes, candles, candy, antiques, glassware, cookware, home decor, camping gear, and the list goes on... They have a great selection of bread mixes too to make your own scones, macaroons, breads, soups, etc.

I am in shock! I love this store in the Victorian Village of Ferndale! A few hours ago I placed an online order. (I live locally.) Just a few minutes ago it arrived!!! Everything was perfect. For your gift buying needs...shop local at Golden Gait Merchantile. It doesn't get any better than this seriously. I'd give them 10 stars if I could!!!

My Aunt lives nearby in Fortuna and whenever I visit we always make a trip over to Ferndale. Over the years this has become one of my favorite stores. Located in on Main Street, it is like time has stood still within this old-timey emporium. It's like walking into a museum, except almost everything is for sale. From a wide assortment of hats, to shoes and clothing. The shelf lined walls are full of all sorts of earthenware, coffee grinders, tinware and cast iron. The glass cases are always fun to peer into full of locally crafted jewelry. Throughout the store you can find antiques and quality reproductions. Other glass cases boast all kinds of personal accessories like pomades and shaving accessories many old, rediscovered stocks of original merchandise in new, never opened condition. Be sure to take a detour upstairs to visit the museum where many of the store items can be viewed in their proper domestic settings life-size diorama style. Stop on by to look around and don't forget to pick up some candy from the barrels.

As other reviewers have said, this is such a neat store. A total throw-back to the 1800's, and is actually quite huge instead and packed to the gills with literally everything. Upstairs is neat too, with old-timey scenes and mannequins. My 3-year old daughter was completely confused why the boy (mannequin) had some missing fingers. Whoops! But I would definitely come back here again were I to visit Ferndale - could spend quite a while perusing all the items.

If Ferndale had nothing else it would still be a travel destination for me, just for the pleasure I take in coming to the mercantile. I always want to find a hat from their extensive supply and never manage to, but the packaged soup and candles and bulk candy and English canned goods and housewares, and it just goes on and on, ALL delight me and I stock up. It feels like every scene you've ever seen in a Western, in which our heroes come to town for some action and even the little lady gets to come with and everybody checks out all the things they don't have back at the shack and can't get elsewhere and carefully select those treasures they can afford. it!

This is such a gem of a place. It's like you have warped back in time to the gold rush days. They have all kinds of men's hats, unusual jams from England (ginger, marmalade, mint, etc) All at very reasonable prices. There is a very unique museum up the stairs with antique furniture. This place is so clean. It's got cast iron pots and very useful kitchenware. It mixes new and antique together. Very patient cashier. Thank the new owner who purchased this gem and keeping it the way it is. Unique items: Chinese chairs circa 1880, spinning wheel to make your own yarn, your grandma's great grandmother's furniture, sassfresas tea leaves, licorice bark, you-name-your own special find. This is a MUST stop! Get your pie down the street while you are visiting.

Fun place to explore, discover and remember. Lots of hats, candy, cooking stuff to look through and touch. Don't forget to go upstairs - I wish they still had furniture up there, but its a little bit of history of how things use to be.

Visited the mercantile this past holiday season for the first time and LOVED it. It's so cozy and has an old-time Victorian feel to it. The customer service was great, and you should definitely go check it out!

Fun store. It has vintage brands I remember from my childhood. I go here to get unique gifts for birthdays and holidays. The staff is following virus safety guidelines, but is also friendly and very helpful.

I love old general stores, oh I guess that is why I use to own one, yeah in san simeon , yeah, got dismantled, imagine that, anyways so much went on at these type of places, they surely must be preserved !

This is probably in the top ten of all the cool little shops I have ever been to. First of all, upstairs is a free museum with cool artifacts from the past, displayed very well. There are some things to buy too. (Like new kids shoes from the '50s.) Downstairs there are cases of super cool things, really eclectic. The other thing is that the prices are really reasonable. Locally made jam and other yummy foods. I bought original antique veggie / fruit box labels for $1.

I love the smell of licorice that wafts out the front door. There are so many fun vintage things to look at- I wish I had more time. The selection of items is incredible... I felt like a kid in a candy shop- literally. The owners were super nice and friendly- they even recommended somewhere to stop for lunch. I will definitely come back and shop for longer if I pass through Ferndale in the future!

Wonderful shop. Years ago I visited this shop and was worried it wouldn't be the same or worse gone on our vacation, but was happy to see it is still pretty much the same with friendly people. It's fun to look at all the antique items and amazing products to buy. I bought the scone mix and lemon curd and couldn't wait to bake them. I wish they had mail order! Ferndale is a place worth visiting for the charm and people.

Great little shop. I found the most fantastic little velvet hat. So many unique items to find within this little shop. Like walking back in time with some of the items. Loved this old-timey Mercantile and wish we had longer to browse. Will be returning for sure.

I love this place. It is impeccably kept and merchandised and the shop owners really care about what they do and who they do it for. There is a treasure here for everyone with lots of goodies and goods from yesteryear. Whether you are steampunk, Victorian, a hipster, a normal jo tourist or even one of us whacky locals you will always find something of interest here. If you have never had one, ask them for a bag of Walnetos.....

I go twice a year (Memorial Weekend and Labor Day Weekend) to Fortuna to visit some friends and of course go through Ferndale... We stopped at this store and I was in heaven! LOVED!! everything in there... I plan on taking more money with me to buy more stuff! Love it!!!

This is a great stop if you want to step back in time and see what a general store may have looked like around the turn of the century. Great antique finds and modern day buys as well. They have a second floor which is set up like a mini museum. Fun place to visit.

Huge multi level store filled with ol timey goods for any travelers budget The museum upstairs is a must see.
