A must stop for those visiting SF is the Golden Gate Bridge - if you're lucky, the fog won't have rolled in so you can get a clear view of one of the nation's most iconic bridges!
The welcome center itself is a gift shop that has a higher likelihood of selling items given the volume of tourists that come through here. However outside of the welcome center, the pavilion has a lot to do from the flower displays, trails, and observation points of the bridge. From here you can also access the entrance to cross the bridge.
Speaking of the bridge itself - cross it! At least to the first stand - it's interesting to look at the structure itself and the bolts they use. Plus it gives you an amazing view of SF. We lucked out, because when we went there were around 6 humpback whales crossing the bridge! You could easily spot them breaching and leaving their tails behind. Such a cool sight!
Bathroom lines are night-marish , at least for the ladies' room. If you're coming here after 10:30 am, that's when the tourist buses start pulling in and this seems to the rest stop for it. That said, I recommend visiting the Golden Gate Bridge Pavilion in the morning - it's easier to find parking and you don't have to deal with the super large tourist groups that come later in the afternoon. I'd especially recommend coming when you see it's clear - when I went in the morning the bridge was clear, Later in the afternoon it got covered up by a fog that had rolled in!
Parking wise, there's the lot in front of the welcome center, but there's also a parking lot after the tunnel when you loop around the road. This lot is only open to public parking on the weekends, but you have a better shot at getting a spot here than in the 1st lot. All parking is $5 flat, and you have to pay at the machine and specify what spot you're in. I like to be nice, so whenever we see a car taking our spot we give them our parking ticket to save them an extra $5 (each parking ticket is good for the whole day).
Last piece of advice... BRING A JACKET. San Francisco goes from hot to cold is certain parts of the city, but the bridge pavillion is definitely one of the chillier points. Since the water is cold and we get a lot of wind, even on a sunny day the wind chill factor will make you shiver. This gets even worse when you try crossing the bridge, with the addition of cars zooming by.
