9 Best Hikes in San Diego | Condé Nast Traveler

"San Diego's massive Balboa Park is home to 17 museums, the city's famous zoo , acres of gardens, and 65 miles of trails. There's a little—or rather, a lot—for just about everyone. If we're talking hikes, Balboa Park Trail #1 is paved and short, at just 1.5 miles, but it also avoids most of the more heavily touristed parts of the park. If you're looking to get in a quick trail run or workout, that's the way to go. For something more heart-pumping, lace up for Trail #5, a 6.6-mile loop that traverses paved and dirt paths through some of the lesser-seen parts of the park as well as landmarks like the Cabrillo Bridge and Spreckels Organ Pavilion." - Archana Ram

Google
A hidden, peaceful gem in Golden Hill and quite possibly one of my favorite parks in San Diego! First off, the view of the downtown city skyline through the trees and flowers is breathtaking! The entire park is well kept and clean. The road surrounding the park is a circular paved path approximately a mile long that is perfect for getting your steps in or taking a quick jog. There are many strategically situated picnic tables and benches for you to enjoy the lovely views! There is ample green grass and lush palm trees if you want to throw a blanket down and get your feet in the grass or hang a hammock and power lounge in shaded bliss. The park squirrels usually put on quite an acrobatic display which is sure to add to your enjoyment! Community events happen regularly here and it is a wonderful place for sports or special gatherings. I come here almost every day and am so grateful this beautiful zen green space exists

Google
This is a really nice place and this is the first time that I came here. The huge trees are absolutely magnificent and it's very peaceful. Every so often a large plane flies over above. We were only here a short while so I didn't get to walk the whole area but I think I got some pretty good pictures of some nice areas that aren't seen when just driving around on the road.

Google
Beautiful park with bathrooms and volleyball nets. We went out for a DJ set and it's a great place to bring the family

Keri Belisle

Google
Nice little park. Great place to walk around. Nice neighborhood too. You can hear and see the planes coming into Lindbergh Field.

I walk here whenever I need to take in some nature and just chill. Huge trees are unique and interesting plus offer big canopies of shade. Walking and runners enjoy this area as do people parking in the many spots around. Can also watch planes, see the city or look back onto the golf course from here.

Golden Hill Park is just spectacular whenever you just want to lay down on a blanket with a cool breeze on your face while being serenaded by my son playing the guitar

Google
One of my favorite spots in Balboa Park. It's nestled in between a nice view of Balboa and a really great family neighborhood with lots of restaurants & local corner stores. I've never had a bad experience while visiting this part of the park.

Google
Great views. Super chill. A mix of all kind of people. Lots of kids and families playing yard games. Bathrooms are good. They have places for hot coals to dispose. My friends got married here on a Saturday.

Yelp
Not as big as I was hoping. Came with my dog to run around for a hour and if it wasn't for the squirrels he was chasing, it would have been a quick 25 min walk. It's more of a place to bring a bottle of wine and chill or to even have a nice picnic. It's not overly crowded or like I said big but you could easily have 100 people here and still feel like you have space to sit and chill. There's a view of the golf course and a partial view of the city. In the middle of the park there's a bathroom. I think I saw a mini trail that leads down somewhere but my dog got spooked by something and we didnt follow it. I'd rank it a 2 maybe 3 stars for the tranquility it brings. But there's not really anything too special or exciting about this place to rank it any higher.

Yelp
I discovered Golden Hill Park quite by accident a few months ago when I decided to take a "short cut" through Balboa Park on 26th Street.  The park is quite charming -- rolling hills, picnic areas, walking trails, beautiful landscaping, and gardens.  I need to explore this corner of San Diego more.

Yelp
Cuuuuute little park. It's a nice community place to people, bird ,dog, and squirrel watch. The bathrooms aren't too awful, but there was literal shit (you filthy animals) on the ceiling, like a whole pile!!! If you gotta go, you gotta go sometimes... so yeah. I'm no Prima Donna by any means, so it worked for me. I found it to be a very pleasant multi use space. I wasn't thrilled with all of the off leash dogs, that was kinda outta hand. Not every GD place is an off leash dog park you clowns! I love dogs too, but I don't need YOUR dog in my face when I'm chilling at the park, or walking my cats, yes I said that. K, Thanks!

Yelp
Definitely a nice park located in the heart of Golden Hill. I happen to come here for the first time while attending the San Diego Readers's Burger and Beer Fest this year. What I loved about this park was that the green belt was very well maintained and it sported some great huge old evergreen trees and palm trees that have easily been around since the early 1900's. The park has some nice picnic areas with table or grass. On south east side of the park, near the recreation center, there is a neighborhood baseball field and tennis courts, including the rec center. There is playground equipment available for the little ones and adults still children at heart and the park offers restroom facilities. I liked the way Golden Hill drive loops around the perimeter of the park offering a few parking areas along the way. The park is a great spot for yoga groups, running, and for family picnics.

Yelp
So, here's the plan. You grab a pizza or sandwich at Pizzeria Luigi, then take a stroll a couple of blocks to the end of the street and enjoy your food at Golden Hill Park. This is a really nice and spacious park with a lot of mature trees providing plenty of shade. If you're not in the mood for a stroll, the park does offer some parking. Grab one of the picnic tables or spread out your blanket on the grass. Some areas of the park over look Balboa Park so you can be entertained by the golfers. Becky and I had never been here before, but were introduced to the park when we attended the Burgers and Beer festival. We really enjoyed visiting the park and the surrounding Golden Hill neighborhood.

Yelp
Golden Hill Park is technically a part of Balboa Park. Located close to the naval hospital, it's a bit further away from the more visited parts of the park as well as Bankers Hill/Hillcrest. However due to its location it is closer to Downtown SD/East Village and has better views of the city. LOCATION: Park is accessible via I-5 (Pershing Drive) or the 94 (25th Street) The main "entrance" to the park is situated on the end of 25th Street. If you're doing a rideshare this is also the best place to be dropped off/picked up. There is a small parking lot which can be accessed from Golden Hill Drive. I've never had to park but my friends say that there isn't many spaces available so rideshare is highly recommended. There are 3 trails delineated on the map located at the park. They are ranked from easy to difficult based on the terrain and the number of miles. Should you want to do more research, you can go here (https://www.balboapark.org/trails/golden-hill) I knew about this park from attending 2 events hosted by the SD Reader: Tacotopia and Burgers and Beer. The host organizes this event series as a friendly competition to determine which serves the city's best taco, burger and beer. Both events make people take advantage of the park space as people walk from vendor to vendor. Since these events last several hours people also bring in their folding chairs, pets and various forms of outdoor recreation.

Yelp
This is an open space with a wide range of activities, tucked into a neighborhood close to downtown. One evening after work, I picked up my elementary school aged children from downtown and we stopped at this park for a quick play. We focused on the grotto foundation area. Parking was easy, as there are several opportunities to park along the circle road that winds through this small park. The views from the park are very nice: downtown, naval hospital, golf course. There are restrooms on site. We started by walking a bit through the canyon. It appears well used; my only complaint is that there is a bit of rubbish from folks living there. We then checked out the grotto foundation. The stone work is beautiful. My children enjoyed running up and down the stairs of their "castle".

Yelp
There's the main part of the park on the west side where most people spend their time, which is also the home base for the infamous Tour de Fat, but for me though, I prefer the south side a bit more. It's closer to my house and overlooks one of the longer holes of Balboa Golf Course just off 28th street. A few times a month I will pack up my computer, swing by Giorgino's, grab a sandwich or a cheesesteak and track down a picnic table not occupied by a member of Golden Hill's lovable homeless community. I'll put in my headphones, fire up my computer and work while watching old guys shank drives off the tee box. You're sure to see lots of runners, (those fit jerks), and on the weekend this is definitely the spot for birthday parties with lots families setting up shop with tables, chairs, decorations and pinatas - no drinking though, it's the law!

Yelp
It has a great view of Downtown, but everything else looks hideous. The outside of the restrooms have graffiti, you can't tell whether you just stepped on dirt or something far worse, and it looks like no one has maintained the park in years. Also, it's right in the way of the flight path, so you get to see every single plane noisily fly towards the airport. Unless you want to take some cool pictures of San Diego, please don't go to this park.
google avatar

Jessica B.

Yelp
This review is probably biased as I'm a Golden Hill resident and very much in love with my neighborhood. However, biased or not, this is a great city park for a multitude of different activities. It has a beautiful view of the south-eastern edge of Balboa Park, bathroom facilities, and expansive groves of well-kept short and tall palm trees. I work out here, I take my dog here, I've hosted a birthday party here, and I've even seen a wedding here.

Yelp
Came here during the day in hopes of discovering a kiddo friendly park. someone recommended this place and no no no. Park is not kid friendly since there are plunging hills and dangerous slopes for little ones. Plenty of bums to deter you from getting out of your car. No play structures for the kiddos. Does have some nice views. More for adults or a picnic under shade tree or a nice long run.(if you don't mind homeless people) Yes, I did notice a police cars parked there.

Yelp
Huge fan of this park. It's always quiet aside from the occasion plane that flies over every 15 minutes. Great view of the city. Comfortable walking area...safe...lotsa shade and lotsa sun. I like walking into the little jungle area they have near the stone steps.
google avatar

Soleil Moonshine S.

Yelp
Bring a comfortable blanket and a date, and bask in the picturesque nighttime skyline views. Doing so will evoke query-filled conversation ranging from the rationale behind your irrational fear of standardized tests to whether you prefer gummi bears or worms. Ignore the inevitable after-hours funny business you'll likely encounter, travel in pairs, and carry at least one cell phone at all times. Pepper spray is optional. Even beauty has its price.
google avatar

Lainey L.

Yelp
I come here with my pups. They like chasing the squirrels :) Cute little park with an awesome view. There are a few pinic tables, but no BBQ's. Great spot to grab a sandwich from Krak and head over to enjoy the sun. Also, the park closes at sunset I believe? They actually close the gates so you can't drive out. Unless you're a rebel and do some novice 4-wheeling over the grass ;)

Yelp
Golden Hill Park, despite it's august history has fallen on medium hard times. It is mostly patronized by local mexican families and hobos. Last year, Sessions Fest made it's debut at this location and it is slated to return this year with an all local line up on 9/15/07. Sessions Fest runs from noon to 10 PM, has community booths and food and maybe a beer garden this year. On a normal day, Golden Hill Park is nice during the day and sort of sketchy after dark.
google avatar

Rogelio S.

Yelp
I really enjoy this park. It does close after dark so the gates close. There are excellent views of downtown. You usually find locals joggers. I use to live on A st back in the day and did the same. During lunch you see people parking and eating inside cars. A number of first responders chill here which makes the park feel extra safe during the day.

Yelp
It's a beautiful place to run day or night. Just watch for poop if your in the grass. It's not very big but it's sizable enough for children and dogs to play. They may need to repave the damge road. It's a hazard when running laps aroud the driving path. There are normally cars parked there all the time, not sure why. I guess some people just sit back and watch the aircraft fly by directly overhead. Which looks to be aproximatly 800ft.

Yelp
While technically part of Balboa Park, Golden Hill Park is located on the other side of Pershing Drive on the north side of Golden Hill. It's not as "nice" as some of the other parks in town but it's still a great place to relax and catch a view of the sunset and the city skyline. The street that loops around the park is just a tad over half of a mile long so it's a good place to run if you're not so good at tracking distances in your head. The city really does need to repave the road though, it looks like it hasn't gotten much love in years. There are a couple of trails that go off into other parts of the park but like anywhere I recommend you take care since I've seen questionable characters out there at odd hours.
google avatar

Nico F.

Yelp
I like this park. I take my dogs here in the morning. You see a lot of people walking their dogs or walking for exercise. The loop around the park is about 0.5 miles so it's a good measurement for training. When it's warm I like to lay on the lawn and relax. It's got an awesome view of downtown, and in the park it's almost like you're not in a city. It has a bathroom, but I've never been in. Doesn't look to clean but I do see city workers around often picking up trash and emptying bins. There are picnic tables throughout too and I think I saw some BBQs. Fair warning: this place can get some homeless people at night sometimes. Sometimes even during the day.

Yelp
Pretty nice park, I can't believe I lived so close and never even knew about it. Usually come here for a good evening stroll with my GF and her friends. There's allot of people jogging the park with there dogs, late into the eve. The park is pretty well kept. Sometimes, SD PD even stops by and parks in the park, keeping an eye on things. Its a nice stroll, usually head over to Krakatoa afterwards for a snack, or down the street for a fruit salad. Awesome views, definitely worth it.

Lin R.

Yelp
This park is peaceful. My husband and I love to grab something to eat and head on over to this park. Small but very nice. We also take are 2 dogs here & we have never had a bad experience here. Everyone is there to enjoy the view & breeze.

Yelp
Love it here Golden hills park and balboa park for hiking trails jogging place love it I usually do my one hour workout s 4,5 days a week around the area but love this Florida canyon trails and golden hills going all the way up to balboa park amazing soreness but wroth the workout
google avatar

Chris D.

Yelp
GH Park has gotten really popular since the time change! And don't get me started about the Pokémon Go zombies walking around aimlessly looking at their phones! Great place to get a workout in or just come and relax. Great views of downtown SD and Florida canyon.
google avatar

Monique R.

Yelp
I love this hidden stretch of nature. Its great to see that people utilize this little bit of park, from large families, friends playing soccer, and people jogging. My dogs and I walk this little stretch occasionally, and also do an outdoor bootcamp class during the summer on Saturdays (without the dogs :) Obviously, any park after sunset is sketchy...plus, its technically closed anyway at that time.
google avatar

Ethan H.

Yelp
I like this place. A well-kept secret. Great place to avoid the crowds everywhere else in the park on a nice summer day. But do me a favor and don't mess it up for the rest of us, okay?
google avatar

Jacquie B.

Yelp
I discovered this place when I was living in Golden Hill and shot a music video here for a school project in '99. Very quaint area.
google avatar

Cris V.

Yelp
Nice place for a Sunday picnic. The only downside is the cars with dubs and systems continually going into the circle.
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
It's alright for a city rec center. Not much room to watch the indoor pickup games when you aren't playing.
google avatar

Ray P.

Yelp
A nice park with a one way street that goes all the way around it. It has a nice view of downtown and I enjoy walking my dogs around it every once in a while. It seems also good for joggers and bicyclists.
google avatar

Krisen B.

Yelp
Love running here. It's well maintained and the view of the city down below and the planes overhead makes for a perfectly pleasant work out spot.
google avatar

J C.

Yelp
Unsafe at night. Drunks and broken glass. Park Rangers and police need to patrol here more often during the night. Especially weekends.
google avatar

Jen S.

Yelp
I knew about this park from Tour de Fat but I didn't really explore it. I ran through here the other day and noticed the awesome view of downtown it has! I thought it was really great even though it also gives a view of the 5. I'm willing to overlook that to appreciate the greenery and views. It's a good place to run through as well because it has a water fountain, which can be hard to come by when running through the neighborhoods of San Diego. There are also bathrooms available, picnic tables, and it looks as though you can grill here as they those charcoal garbage bins. Anyway, I definitely recommend this park for a picnic, to play soccer, or just hang out in the cool trees. Just know that no booze is allowed.
google avatar

Michelle C.

Yelp
Love love love it! I really wish the city renovated the old fountain that's on the side of the park's hill. It's important for San Diegans to really explore and discover places like this. :)
google avatar

Desi M.

Yelp
The planes suck. There are planes at Balboa too, but not quite as loud as here. Plus a couple mornings ago I was out for a run and decided to do a couple of laps in this park and was forced to inhale cigarette smoke almost the whole time. Forget it. I'll stick to running in the street.
google avatar

Kristen M.

Yelp
Small neighborhood park overlooking downtown San Diego. Nice place to go for a run or walk.

diahann d.

Yelp
Very peaceful park. I enjoyed the sunshine, watching airplanes, And playing ball here. Not too many amenities but if you just want to stop in for a picnic, it has a great view of downtown! Recommend for a run too
