The most iconic landmark of Innsbruck’s Old Town, this building is known for its three-story balcony topped with a "golden roof" made of approximately 2,600 gilded copper tiles. It was commissioned around 1500 by Emperor Maximilian I of the Holy Roman Empire to celebrate his marriage and imperial accession. From this balcony, the emperor is said to have watched festivities, ceremonies, and tournaments taking place in the square below. The façade is richly decorated with sculpted figures of the emperor and empress, heraldic emblems, and dancing scenes. Inside, a small museum presents the life and era of Maximilian I. At night, the illuminated roof stands out even more vividly, adding a striking glow to the medieval townscape.
