The Goldenes Dachl, or Golden Roof, is the most famous landmark in Innsbruck and a must-see when exploring the Old Town. Located at the edge of the central plaza, just a short walk from the town square, it immediately captures attention with its glittering roof tiles.
The roof itself is covered with 2,657 gilded copper shingles, built in the 15th century to mark Emperor Maximilian I’s wedding. It was designed as a royal balcony from which the emperor and his wife could watch festivities in the square below.
Inside, the Goldenes Dachl Museum tells the story of Emperor Maximilian, Innsbruck’s medieval history, and the significance of the structure. Interactive exhibits and artifacts give visitors a deeper appreciation of its place in Tyrolean culture.
The surrounding area is full of charm, with shops, cafés, and restaurants lining the narrow streets. It’s a perfect spot to sit down, enjoy a meal or coffee, and soak in the atmosphere of Innsbruck’s historic heart.
