"Fancy Fish for Sale As a lover of all things market, as well as a diver and serious animal lover, I was beyond ecstatic to find out there was a goldfish market in Hong Kong . The market is situated in the Mong Kok area of Hong Kong's Kowloon. The market is a series of streets, rather than a structured market. It's amazing! Shop upon shop selling every type of fish you could imagine and some you have never even heard of or seen. Things that would be illegal in many western countries, and bargain-bin prices compared to your local fish store. The fish are often displayed outside the shop in plastic bags, ready for you to take home. The Chinese consider goldfish to be particularly lucky, but there are hundreds of other varieties of fish to be found in the streets around Tung Choi street. By kimberly max"

The local people in Hong Kong believe that rearing goldfish and other tropical ornamental fish can bring them luck. There are many shops along this street selling various kinds of small tropical fishes to be reared as pets at home. Fish tanks, aquarium accessories and pet food are also sold here. The fishes for sale are displayed in small transparent plastic bags. There is hardly enough space for them to turn around. The shop owners do not allow people to take photos of the fishes at close range because it could startled them. Nothing spectacular here, you can give it a miss if you have a tight itinerary.

Considered as a tourist attraction in Hong Kong the Gold fish markets is quite bizarre. Located in Bute Street near the Prince Edward MTR station fish of all sorts hanging in small plastic bags on walls of stores. Most are small enough for them to swim around but some can hardly move in such a confined space in small bags. Some sellers are quick to point out that filming is not allowed i was lucky to arrive just on opening to capture a few still shots. All sorts of equipment for fish keeping are for sale like nets, chemicals, cleaning aids, air pump and filters. Fish available are cold water goldfish/koi carp, paradise/gouramis, live bearers, knife fish, African and south/Central american cichlids, Asian barbs and snake heads etc. Definitely worth coming to have a look if youre an aquarium enthusiast.

It’s like visiting the aquarium for free. There are many places selling different kinds of fishes. You’ll see many signage’s advising there are no photos permitted. Most fishes are sold with a plastic bag full of water. A great place to bring the kids.

99% of the shops are anti tourists and kids. No photo taking of their pets (wonder why), some even followed us throughout to ensure our kids don't touch the cage (not talking about knocking, just on getting close to the cage). They sell more dogs and cats than fish.

Yet another unique streets in Mongkok where there are many pet shops besides goldfish shop selling fish in plastic bags, there are pet shops selling cats and dogs but also reptiles and insects. The street use to be full of pet shops but due to bad economy many have disappeared or turned into pharmacies or other types of business. Please note some of the pet shops have moved up stairs due to cheaper rent. So do look up to see if there are any shops you are looking for.

If you're in the mood for some tropical fish and a few fish oddities, this is the street browse (beware no photography is allowed). You can find just about anything that takes your fancy, although quite a selection will be is plastic bags to be displayed to attract passersby.

When I went to Goldfish market every time, i seen that the goldfish is trapped in a small plastic bag and only provided a limited air, my feeling was not very good. This kind of selling method has a room to improve.
