The Sunken World Hiding Under the Water's Surface

"Golubac Fortress is one of the best preserved medieval fortresses in Europe. Yet the advent of modern technology has submerged some of the outer walls of this storied Serbian fortification, finally causing the decay of a powerful compound that survived years of war and battle. Comprised of 10 different towers protecting three internal compounds, Golubac Fortress was a powerhouse guarding the Danube. Despite its formidable structure, it changed hands many times throughout its existence, but even war and constant attack could not destroy the thick stone walls. Unfortunately, the only thing strong enough to begin the death of Golubac was modern technology. In 1964, a hydroelectric dam on the Danube caused flooding along its shores. The rising water levels eventually submerged Golubac’s outer walls along the lower bank. Along with the Danube’s invasion of the fortress, a road was created that passed through the walls, once again proving that the only way to breach Golubac was with the technology of modern progress and infrastructure. In 2005, a campaign to restore the overgrown fortress was undertaken and Golubac is now a popular tourist site in Serbia, especially during boat tours of the Danube." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

It’s so beautiful place!!! Ancient fortress looks unbelievable, park near it - lovely and quiet. Into fortress 3 line for exploring green - for everyone and blue and red - they are hard. Into fortress you can see - ancient clothes, weapons and books. You also can listen story of fortress. Stuff was a little bit rude, but it is not big problem:) I recommend this place for everyone!!

I would like to recommend the visiting of this historical site. It is well reconstructed have an educational materials including video film about the history of the fortress, and printed material in Serbian and English languages. The view from walls is stunning. The life performance of the actors present clothes weapon of the time, you can even practice the shut from the bow. Visiting of the museum has a three options the green. blue, and black. It differed in costs and difficulty of the of the tracks depends how high you want to climb. For me the blue was good enough. The museum is opened in Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The parking of the museum could full when you arrive so there a lot free parkings besides the road. Also there are three hiking trails access to them is just on another side of the road. I will recommend to wear a good hiking footwear when you visiting the site or the trails.

Truly magnificent experience and it is great that this fortress was finally reconstructed. Many thanks to all donors especially Austria. If you are going around do not hesitate to stop. It is worth every penny! Also parking and toilet availability is there.

Absolutely stunning!! One of the "have to visit" places in Serbia! Looks like you enter some Game of Thrones scene! Beautiful place, amazing view on Danube river, very clean, nice people, cheapest tickets.

Brilliant place to visit. The restoration is so sympathetic and well done. Very easy access although the towers are quite a climb. It's worth it for the views.

Really cool fort. Unfortunately the top areas are inaccessible on weekdays so we couldn't scramble up to the top. Still a very interesting visit

Worth a visit. Nicely restored, the small museum is interesting. A bit dissapointing the lady at the ticket office did not explain the ticketing structure. Base ticket is 750dinars, but you cannot access all areas. We only found this out from the brochure they gave us, after buying the tickets. There are several colored areas and you can get to some of them by paying a 1200 dinars ticket. Seeing all of the areas would require paying several charges. It feels a bit like a tourist trap and the personnel a bit bored and disinterested.

Visited this fort today. It sits right on the bank of The Danube in Serbia. It has been carefully restored over a number of years and was a very interesting visit.
