On the Grid : Good Town Doughnuts

"Fellow doughnut lovers, these just might be the best doughnuts in Tokyo. Yes, they are freshly baked everyday and are wonderfully chewy on the inside. What’s even more amazing is the sugar coating and all the different flavors they offer. One will not be enough." - Misa Matsuda Maraun

Google
Small little doughnut shop selling a variety of pastries as well. There's a minimum order per person if you dine in. Friendly service. Line moves quick. Donuts are delicious. Very light. Scones as well. Great snack

Google
The best doughnuts I ever tried. So soft and bouncy, the fillings were perfect. The place had such nice, welcoming staff, the drinks also delicious and the cafe had nice, quirky decor and interior that I loved. A MUST VISIT SPOT in Tokyo!

Google
Really really cute, cosy and warm hotspot that seems to attract some crowds. Regardless the staff were sweet and efficient :) The matcha was well prepared and creamy. The pumpkin cheesecake was rich and decadent similar to their fluffy signature donuts.

Pretty good glazed donuts with flavorful icing. Other pastries, sandwiches, and slices of pizza available. Coffee is decent and nice seating to listen to old 70s music.

Google
Great bakery with vegan options. The donuts here are so awesome that I came by twice to try different things. The donuts here are on the fluffy side with a chewy texture which I prefer. Come here instead of the other one that has a long queue. Personally favourite is the raspberry pistachio although I really want to try the maple bacon one too.

Google
I don't go somewhere without finding a doughnut shop, and the last day on my trip to Japan I walked from Takeshita to Good Town and the 1 mile walk didn't disappoint. I had the toasted coconut, ginger apple cider, passion fruit, chocolate crunch, sea salt caramel, and Nutella. Toasted coconut and ginger apple cider were the best by far. I loved the consistency of these raised doughnuts. When in Tokyo, go to Good Town.

The donuts are sold inside the cafe that's called 'The Little Bakery Tokyo'. Oh my god. The donuts here are SO good. They're the closest thing I've had to New York style donuts whilst in Japan. They have amazing flavour to them, as well as the perfect light and chewy texture. We arrived at about 2pm and queued for about 10 mins. Although they were sold out of many flavours, they were churning out fresh donuts every now and then. If you don't see exactly what you're after, I'd recommend getting a coffee or something and hanging around outside to see what comes out. We initially got 2 donuts, one traditional glaze and one strawberry lemonade (the strawberry lemonade was unreal). We then saw them bringing out the maple bacon flavour and had to grab one. Good thing we did because it was easily the best of the bunch. The coffee was okay. Not the best we've had but pretty good. The donut flavours are all labelled in english as well as Japanese. We were unable to get a seat inside as it was super busy, however managed to secure a spot on one of their benches outside. Although we didn't try any, I did see a couple of vegan options on the menu. I marked down slightly as they coffees took about 15-20 minutes to come out, and the queue was a bit chaotic it was hard to figure out where to stand.

Goodtown Donuts in Shibuya offers a delightful experience for donut lovers. Nestled in a trendy part of Tokyo, this café boasts a wide selection of handcrafted donuts that are as beautiful as they are delicious. The flavors range from classic glazed to innovative options like matcha and pistachio, catering to a variety of tastes. The airy, slightly chewy texture and perfectly balanced sweetness make each bite memorable. The cozy, welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff add to the overall charm, making it a perfect spot for a casual coffee break or a sweet treat during your Shibuya explorations. Highly recommended for anyone looking for high-quality, artisanal donuts.

Yelp
Good Town Doughnuts is located inside of another bakery that isn't vegan, so you'll find a small section of their vegan donuts inside the display case once you've made it to the front of the queue. We tried the Kyoto Uji Matcha (¥480) and Maple Walnut (¥570) donuts. They had other flavors including Chocolate and Raspberry Pistachio, making this quite a diverse offering for the hungry vegan and non-vegan alike. The donuts were bomb! Soft on the inside with a harder, crisper exterior. Like other donuts, they were "cakier" than what you've probably had before, and that is not a bad thing. The matcha and maple glazes were perfect without them being overly sweet. We ended up saving half the donuts for later since they were a bit heavy, but for a quick snack on a busy shopping date, Good Town certainly delivered.

Yelp
Oh, how I love it that you can type vegan donut on your phone and you can just wander off to Harajuku for some pillowy sweet treats. They had no variety when we went, just a simple plain donut. But the donut was A+. I'm gonna go and say please pivot to 100% vegan. You've kind of proven you can make this happen with no animal products already. The small shop has a distinct American feel to it. Including the wooden cross sections as platters, and diner style neon lights outside. So I had to look it up, and the chain is originally from California.

Yelp
Came upon this lovely bakery and it's our new go to for donuts. Vegan options offered as well and it is a quaint little detour from the beaten path of the Shinjuku shopping strip.

Yelp
OMG their matcha donut is so delicious! And I can't believe that it's vegan! Stumbled upon this bakery while we were exploring the little side streets of Harajuku. Their store facade is very inviting; it just kinda pulls you in to take a look!

Yelp
These were the MOST AMAZING doughnuts I've ever had in my entire life!!! The place itself is cool and super Americana. The doughnuts were a bit pricey, but that's to be expected for so much ecstasy melting in your mouth. The staff here were really nice and obsessed with American culture. They made us feel super welcome. The bathroom is a traditional American bathroom, which is never as good as Japanese bathrooms. But it was very clean and super cute.

Yelp
This a great place to have excellent doughnuts in Tokyo Japan. I highly recommend trying their Vegan doughnuts which are absolutely delicious, and come in many different flavors. The vegan doughnuts are rich with flavor and texture. I highly recommend anyone traveling to Tokyo to their amazing doughnuts.

Yelp
If you're craving a donut and matcha, this is your spot If it wasn't so sweet, I would of tested it 5 stars

Yelp
If you want a good American donut this is the place to go. I had the hibiscus and am trying to find an excuse to go back and buy a whole box so I can try every other donut. Definitely check this place out if you're craving a good donut. Edit: found an excuse to buy a whole box. So far I haven't found a donut on their menu I don't like.

Yelp
Came here for the vegan donuts. They were amazing. Unfortunately I cannot say the same about the customer service. I bought 5 donuts and 2 drinks. Me and my party wanted to eat one at the store and take the rest to go. Somebody came to give us glasses of water at our table. A few minutes later somebody else came to take the water back and told us that we couldnt eat at the store because...we were sharing one donut between the 4 of us. I dont think gangsta realized that we bought 5 donuts. To make a long story short, if you're desperate for good vegan donuts, check this place out. Otherwise, be sure to order at least one donut per person and dont even think about sharing if u plan on eating at the store.

Yelp
I am a huge sucker for all things cute and novel, and of course, if it involves a drink in a mason jar, i'm there. For this reason, the bf and I ended up stopping by Good Town Doughnuts (on our way to visit Ra.a.g.f. (the bunny cafe)). I felt like I was in hipster-central (minus the actual hipsters) merely as a result of the elaborate decor. I could very much imagine Good Town Doughnuts being located in San Francisco, and having a line out the door and down the block. They offer a variety of drinks, including coffee, tea, lemonade, and different kinds of beer. We planned to just have beers, but they told us that you have to order a doughnut with your drink. No problem there, we were happy to do so! They have an interesting selection of doughnuts, and when served, I do recall it being quite chewy (but in a good way). It was also brought out a "tree-stump" platter, which made me happy. Overall, a positive experience :)

Yelp
These donuts reminded of Krispy Kreme and that is a bad thing. Super sweet, super sugary and super oily. All I could taste was fat and sugar and it was really unpleasant. I'm not sure what the fuss is about, but you can get this sort of sickly donut in many places. So if you're a donut fan, don't be fooled by the great flavour combinations on offer. You'll barely taste these flavours as they're masked by grease and sugar. I know this review is counter to what many people are writing, but maybe it's a cultural thing. I'm not from America, so I'm not into this style of donut.

Yelp
Want expensive, sugary, delicious doughnuts? This is the place! Probably the best doughnuts I've ever had in Japan. I don't eat them on a regular basis, but these doughnuts are addictive I've only tried 4 of the flavors they offer: matcha, raspberry with pistachio toppings, nutella and white chocolate. My favorite is the raspberry with pistachio The drinks are also a bit over-priced, but the chai latte is good....you receive more ice than chai though.

Yelp
I visited this place twice during my stay in Tokyo. It was mostly for the convenience of getting something quick to start my day. Like others have mentioned, the donuts are on the sweet side but still tasty. I tried 3 donuts (chocolate, matcha, maple) and the maple was the best one. The chocolate was solid but I found that I didn't particularly like the matcha flavored one. I had the matcha tea as well which was good. I didn't have any negative experiences from the staff. Everyone was friendly to me. On both occasions, there was only one or two other people in the shop, so it wasn't very busy. English friendly menu & staff

Yelp
I was in Tokyo for 10 days, and I came back here 3 times. Does that give you any indication about how good the doughnut french toast is? Food is amazing. Staff is super sweet. Hyper-Americana decor is adorable. Go. Just go.

Yelp
Delicious, unique flavors. Got a bunch and sat next to the jackalope in the back of store on sofa. All were fresh. Customer service was great and the coffee / chai were both super good. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Man these doughnuts are wild. Taste amazing and the design of each donut almost too good. I'm this scenario the Japanese have out American the Americans.

Yelp
I love good town donuts! This is a great place for brunch or lunch. They have great coffee I normally get a donut and an Almond milk iced latte. The perfect amount of sweetness without any sugar added. They also have great bottled cold brew coffee. You must go here!

Yelp
The Great Burger restaurant was full so the staff brought us next door to Good Town Doughnuts which had tables available. After finishing off our burgers we decided to try the Doughnuts which were said to be the best in Tokyo! Had the toasted coconut which was very good! The others looked delicious as well but we were too full to try more! So sad!

Yelp
Good Town Doughnuts knows whats up... think chewy inside and sugary goodness on the outside, best donuts in tokyo. The donuts will set you back 400¥ ~ per ring but honestly its worth the try!!!! They also do gelato, drinks and savoury food! Highly recommended

Yelp
We stumbled into this little joint while wandering around the Harajuku district of Japan. It has got to be run by some ex-pat American because we felt like we were in the PNW (that's Pacific Northwest in case you were confused). Super hipster decor, including subway tiles, open kitchen, inventive donuts and entrees (donut french toast, anyone?), and Jewish superhero drinking glasses. It was nice to have menus in English and familiar foods, after a week of Japanese cuisine. I had a grilled cheese (gooey to the max) and my husband had the donut french toast. The grilled cheese was made on a panini press so it wasn't as greasy as you would normally expect one to be, but certainly overloaded on the cheese. A major con, however, was the pickle, which was floppy and had the most disturbing texture and taste. I'm not sure if it was perhaps an experimental version of pickled cucumbers, but it was GROSS. The donut french toast was charming in appearance and good in theory, but in execution, the donut was too thick and the middle did not get cooked all the way. So unless you are ok with undercooked custard in your french toast, I'd steer clear. The shining stars in this place are the donuts. If we had stuck with just the donuts, I'd be giving this place 5 stars. The flavors are innovative and intense. The most memorable were the non-traditional donuts - the hibiscus, the blood orange, and the raspberry pistachio. You can tell from first bite that they use real ingredients to create the icings. The donut is a standard yeast raised donut (they do have a couple cake donuts available, but we didn't try them), and not overly sweet. It's one thing I just love about Asia - their desserts are not syrupy-diabetes-on-a-plate, but rather, lightly sweet. We bought 6 donuts, with the plan to take 1-2 bites out of each. I couldn't stop eating the hibiscus! Like a refreshing glass of jamaica (ha-my-ka, not jah-may-ka) in donut form. Thankfully we walked at least 15 miles that day, so I'm pretty sure I left the donut calories on Japan's streets. We'd definitely go back for a little snack the next time we're in the area. Major bonus - it's like 2 streets away from a cat cafe!

Yelp
Who cares about the donuts (or whatever the product is for that matter) when the staff is as rude as the garbage that runs this place? Have lived in Japan half my life and this is by far the worst service I have ever experienced - in a country that prides itself (usually rightfully so) on having the best customer service in the world? Went in with my GF, small line up of people so we first went to the back and 'claimed' a table by laying our jackets out on the seats as every Japanese person always does whenever they enter a crowded shop like Starbucks, etc. The glasses wearing hag that runs the place brought our jackets back to us in line stating that it was against the rules to do this. Unbelievable. Especially since there were tons of open seats! We finally get to the front of the line and the first three donut flavours we tried to order they claimed other people had reserved. Well why have them in the display window then??? Then they added in another of their ridiculous rules - if you don't buy an overpriced drink to wash the donut down, you have to get take-out. By this time we'd had enough. I said, loudly enough so they all could hear, wow everything here is "America-style" including the service. We walked out without making a purchase. Don't waste your time or money in this place!

Yelp
I finally tried the smile mango donut and it was so good! I want to try every donut in the shop. I know the donuts are a bit pricey when they're worth every yen.

Xypnise 7.

Yelp
Their vegan donuts from the inside, tastes like bread. And and the topping flavors are soooo sugary. It is not a real donuts. Also the staff are so bitter and frustrated. Even the next door cafe has weird service too. It seems like those restaurants are not well managed and their owners do not care about serving good quality food

S K.

Yelp
A nice selection of vegan donuts. So delicious. Wish I was eating one right now. On a nice street off away from the crowds.
google avatar

David P.

Yelp
Fantastic donuts and the coffee is pretty good too! Expect to fork out at least 350 yen for a donut, but it's totally worth it. They have a great range of flavones, in addition to the always trusty traditional - must try the Nutella one next time!
google avatar

Sumi A.

Yelp
I've only been once and found it by accident and ate two delicious donuts. One was a toasted coconut and the other was like a coffee/expresso flavor. The donuts were perfectly soft and chewy and the toppings were delicious. So glad to stumble upon this little treat.
google avatar

Michelle K.

Yelp
very good donuts (real American ones), and great location. they serve coffee too, which we haven't tried so far. donuts are pretty pricey though.

Yelp
Really disappointed. They still had 15 minutes before closing and denied my service even though their store was still full. All i wanted was takeout and i explained that but they still denied me. Extremely disappointing considering it was my last night in Japan and came here to try their croissant donuts. ): It was just rude.

Mark K.

Yelp
Terrible. Even with low expectations, still you can definitely get better elsewhere. I wouldn't waste your time coming to this place.
