We stumbled into this little joint while wandering around the Harajuku district of Japan. It has got to be run by some ex-pat American because we felt like we were in the PNW (that's Pacific Northwest in case you were confused). Super hipster decor, including subway tiles, open kitchen, inventive donuts and entrees (donut french toast, anyone?), and Jewish superhero drinking glasses.
It was nice to have menus in English and familiar foods, after a week of Japanese cuisine. I had a grilled cheese (gooey to the max) and my husband had the donut french toast. The grilled cheese was made on a panini press so it wasn't as greasy as you would normally expect one to be, but certainly overloaded on the cheese. A major con, however, was the pickle, which was floppy and had the most disturbing texture and taste. I'm not sure if it was perhaps an experimental version of pickled cucumbers, but it was GROSS.
The donut french toast was charming in appearance and good in theory, but in execution, the donut was too thick and the middle did not get cooked all the way. So unless you are ok with undercooked custard in your french toast, I'd steer clear.
The shining stars in this place are the donuts. If we had stuck with just the donuts, I'd be giving this place 5 stars. The flavors are innovative and intense. The most memorable were the non-traditional donuts - the hibiscus, the blood orange, and the raspberry pistachio. You can tell from first bite that they use real ingredients to create the icings. The donut is a standard yeast raised donut (they do have a couple cake donuts available, but we didn't try them), and not overly sweet. It's one thing I just love about Asia - their desserts are not syrupy-diabetes-on-a-plate, but rather, lightly sweet.
We bought 6 donuts, with the plan to take 1-2 bites out of each. I couldn't stop eating the hibiscus! Like a refreshing glass of jamaica (ha-my-ka, not jah-may-ka) in donut form. Thankfully we walked at least 15 miles that day, so I'm pretty sure I left the donut calories on Japan's streets. We'd definitely go back for a little snack the next time we're in the area.
Major bonus - it's like 2 streets away from a cat cafe!
