Gooney's

Wow, just wow. I was a little hesitant with Gooney's. Asian Fusion, sports bar-ish premises, but the food is just outstanding. Having travelled extensively in the far East, each dish brought back memories, and easily felt like authentic Asian dishes. Brooke was the most hard working, friendly, and happy wait staff who serviced the whole restaurant single handedly, with everyone kept happy and fed. Bar far, the best restaurant we have visited in Amarillo in the last three days.

Excellent food choices. Wonderful flavors and easy on the pocketbook. Hats off to the chef!

Good food, tried the Fish Tacos which are unique with cornmeal coated catfish and a wasabi sauce. Also had the kimchi fries which were pretty much fun for a big flavor change. Nice combo of flavors. Good Asian vibe. Caught them at a busy time of day with only one waitress, but would definitely recommend checking it out!

Great place to eat and the owners are extremely nice and welcoming! If you haven’t eaten here yet I highly recommend you do. The food is always cooked fresh so it’s hot when it comes out and the service is great.

1st time here. Best Asian food in Amarillo!!! Everything was excellent. Fresh ingredients, great flavor! Definitely need to try if you haven’t. Very, very good!

The food is amazing! However, the waitress was slow and struggled to keep the drinks filled. And they give you an additional 4% fee to use your credit card. They do not disclose this before you order, you just find out on the bill. Not sure if I will ever go back.

Our family of 5 loves this place! Love the location and the atmosphere. This is a great place for an Asian fusion food fix! The staff is okay. We always get the Chicken pad thai, pork chops, steak tacos, and the egg rolls with some variance in the appetizer department. Please please try the pork chops. Best in Amarillo! The kiddos typically get the sweet and sour chicken with fried rice. For appetizers we have had the wontons, kimchi fries, egg rolls, and the beef jerky sticky rice. One of the best micheladas I've ever had here Amarillo, came from this place. Will definitely be back.

So I'm back in Amarillo on business. On my first night, I decided to return to the restaurant I enjoyed eating at six months ago (when I had lunch with co-workers). The restaurant did not look very busy for dinner - a party of four and two other tables (with one leaving shortly). I placed my order and then I wait. As I waited, a few more people arrived but the restaurant still had a lot of empty tables. I waited and waited. I was getting tired, hungry, and restless. I realized it was over an hour from the time I walked in and still hadn't been served. When I turned around, I saw that the two tables behind me were served their meals even though they came in after me. It was 7:45pm when I decided I had waited long enough. I hesitated but decided to let the waitress know I was going to leave. Just as I stood up, she came to my table with my plate. I told the waitress that it had been over an hour and I needed to get back. To my surprise, she clapped back with an attitude. She told me I could take the food to go, I could eat it now, or I could just leave. No apologies. Her tone of voice and attitude caught me off guard. She then started venting to me that there was only one cook in the back and I came in during the middle of their dinner rush hour ("Wow, sorry I came for dinner," is what I was thinking as she complained to me). I didn't say anything as she vented. First of all, if she had told me this when I first walked in (that there was only one cook in the back) or communicated with me while I waited, I would've understood but no, there was no communication from her. Second, I didn't see a restaurant full of people nor did I see a lot of traffic of people coming in for take outs or deliveries. Third, why was I the only table without my dinner when I was not the last to arrive? All of these were said silently as I listened to her vent. She then asked again (loudly, of course) what I wanted to do - that I could take the food to go, eat it now, or just leave!! I quickly ran those scenarios in my head and couldn't fathom eating in her presence or having anything to do with the meal after her confrontation with me. I told her I'd leave. I was dining alone and had to walk back to the hotel alone and wanted to get back before it started getting dark in downtown Amarillo. The thought of eating in that environment (and I'm sure she'd expect a tip to boot) didn't appeal to me. It was a really shitty experience and took all the pleasant memories away of this place. The waiting was one thing but the hostility and the attitude from the waitress leaves a really bad taste.

One of me and my family's favorite local spots in the downtown area. Great spot if you're passing through, or if in the area. Excellent location, exceptional service, amazing food!

Where do I start? How do I start? This place doesn't deserve any rating. Service is not even to basic standard. We were here on our way to dallas from ABQ. Based on the reviews we wanted to try the fusion food. We went in around 8:30pm We ordered Mango Cart for myself and Drunken Noodles for kids (No spice level) Curry Chicken with Fried Rice and Lo mein. While we waited for food, my SO ordered a Ginger cocktail. Waitress forgot about it. We had to remind her and she did not even remember what we ordered. They were so busy they had only 2 other tables to handle. Other waitress with glasses is on phone or her back turned against the tables. Cocktail was way too sweet and not even a hint of ginger, it was definitely not worth the 15$. The price is not even listed on menu. We got our first food item at 9:15pm when we requested that our kids were hungry and sleepy, 45 mins after we got in and ordered. Waitress said they were busy with take out, I guess people spending time to visit restaurant are not important. Couple more mins and we were ready to pay for drinks and walkout. Curry Chicken came first and rice came after 5 minutes and waitress did not even think about giving us knives when I ordered chicken which needs knives and took us a while to get her attention as she had her backs turned towards the wall. The waitress kept walking away and sitting down with another couple at a table. Lo mein was made with Ramen noodles. One more thing to note here, the chef keeps walking out of kitchen with food and doesn't even wear and hair net, so dont be alarmed if you find hair in your food If you value your time and mental peace, dont go eat here.

Disappointed dining experience. Prior reviews on Yelp led me to Gooney's with expectations that the venue was eclectic and the food was savory. Unfortunately Gooney's did not live up to these expectations. . I ordered the Veggiie Delight that arrived swimming in a sea of soy sauce. Two customers in the restaurant. Bartender/server showed no interest in either as opposed to Cheers whet everybody knows your name and are always glad you came. Gooney's vibe is nothing special nor was my meal. Would I go back? Doubtful.

Everything was great!! The server was helpful at offering recommendations and everything tasted delicious! We ordered the following: Kimchi fries, the drunken noodles and the bulgogi. I will definitely return any time we're in the area!

Awesome spot downtown , really enjoyed my time while watching MNF. Yes I would do the Kimchi fries again, delish! I sat at the bar so everything was quick and easy with the bartender. A little slow on monday but a nice change of pace.

Great Meal! Favorite dishes and some original dishes you've never thought of!!! Like kimchi fries YUM! An original take on "ribs." Gotta' try 'em! We had drunken noodles with veggies. Bad news no tofu. Good news no bell peppers. Don't you get tired of all the peppers in Asian food? Service is awesome! Our server Taylor, was so personable , and she had great menu tips! Food came out quickly, hot and as described. The atmosphere is downtown and very trendy.

I stopped by for a late lunch while traveling through Amarillo for work. I got the red curry chicken and cheese wontons. Both were delicious. It was so much food that I asked for a to-go box and had the rest later that day...so it was doubly delicious! The server was friendly and even though I came in about 30 mins before closing, I didn't feel rushed out at all.

Great food and service! Expect a wait for food. Favorite dish is the Thai Steak Asada. Amazing flavor and perfect portion.

My dude, let me in and made me food...even tho with no servers shut down... still made me my order ...above and beyond customers.. a must come by check place out great food with history. If you like heat he'll light you up. just ask.

I was invited here by a friend who recommended the pork chops but had never had them. They were recommended to her by a friend. We ordered the plate and shared it because it came with two thick pork chops, one egg, vegetables and rice. I'm pretty picky about my food and I'm very picky about my budget. I think the whole plate was $15 and splitting it was more than worth it. We both got enough to eat and always get good service. I tried one of their others but nothing is as impressive as the pork chops so far.

Our party really enjoyed the food at this restaurant. We got wings and Rangoon for appetizers and all would have rated those a 5/5- the sauce on the wings was delicious, and the Rangoon was something we have never tried elsewhere (and was amazing). The main courses we had came with mixed reviews- anywhere from a 3 to 5/5. Overall, we had a great experience here and would go back when we visit Amarillo again.

Few were in the restaurant, and I was the only one sitting at the bar. I ordered drunken noodles with beef, and my wait began. After 40 minutes of waiting, I was about to get up and leave but I heard discussion about my order from the kitchen - they'd gotten it wrong and mixed it in with a large to-go order that was sitting on the pick-up counter. The server asked me if I minded chicken in the order as well - I replied I ordered beef. I saw she took one of the Styrofoam containers and dumped it out on a plate in the kitchen, and they started picking stuff out of it as if I couldn't see that. She then trotted out the plate and dumped it before me as if everything was fine - no apology for waiting over 40 minutes or picking through my food. I said I wasn't going to eat it, and they wisely decided to not charge me. I left the picked-through order on the bar where she dumped it and went elsewhere. Never again.

I had 1 cocktail. A Moscow Mule. It was plenty good. Well balanced. The place was empty because today I'm a functional alcoholic and drinking at 11am. The bathrooms could be cleaner considering there was no one there. That's petty, and it's not like it was trashed. I'd go back.

Sorry but this was not what I was expecting when I walked in. Gooney's has a odd array of food. For ME, MYSELF, & I... it doesn't work. But you decided for yourself. Food - Meh. Service - Meh.

Went to Gooney's last week for lunch. Walked in at approximately 1145 to a mostly empty restaurant. Maybe 3 other tables were occupied. Waited for 20 mins to be greeted. I ended up walking up to the bar and found a few menus. Told the others to make sure they knew what they wanted when the server came back with out drinks. Ordered drinks and waiting another 20 mins before finally leaving. All in all, sat in the restaurant for over 40 minutes without ever being served a drink or allowed to order. I could understand if the restaurant was packed but it was dead. Now I know why. Won't go back.

Gooney's is delicious. We ordered half the menu and loved everything! The salmon pad Thai was excellent. Our only complaint was that the beer tap was down, and the service is slow. We had a long wait for our food but at least when it arrived it was fresh and tasty.

Go for the delicious kimchi fries and friendly table service. Stay for the insanely tasty jalapeño bacon wontons. Yeah. Like that.

Do not eat here. Walked in and the place smelled like dirty sink water and the interior gives the same impression of a jail house dining room. The server who was serving us seemed over worked and stressed out and gave us the impression that she was angry with our table. The food was decent but not enough to justify the bad smell and ambiance combined with the bad service. This is the easiest 1 star review I've ever had in my life.

Gooney's is amazing. You better get the Jalapeño bacon cheese wontons and the kimchi fries. They will change your life. The atmosphere is good. It has TVs with sports but you don't feel like they are in your face but if you want to watch you can. Great happy hour specials from 4-7 Monday-Friday and week long specials too!!! Clean and friendly. You gotta gonif you in Downtown Amarillo!

My sister and I ate here. We were both happy with our food and would definitely go back.

Didn't have a chance to pay compliments to the Chef(mom or son?) so this is the next best thing, I guess. Ordered the Red Curry Chicken. I've had what I thought was good Thai food in the past, but apparently I didn't know what I didn't know. The chicken was clearly hand-trimmed and only the premium cuts made it into the dish. It was perfectly cooked, with every slice moist and of the perfect texture. All the vegetables were fresh and thoroughly cleaned. It sounds like a weird observation, but as a trained chef, I notice these things. And the curry paste, if I had to guess, was not an off-the-shelf brand found in a grocery store but a family recipe of mixed spices only known to them. The flavor stood out as special to me. And in terms of heat, it was just as a I like it - just above medium. Enjoyed every bite. A top contender for one's last meal.

I had the Drunken Noodles with Chicken. It was a tough choice because other items on the menu were tempting as well but it was a great choice. They were perfectly cooked with just the right amount of spice and fresh broccoli. Would definitely return to try other items.

This place is soooo delicious. Here's what you need to do: order the jalapeño bacon wontons and kimchi fries as an appetizer. Then order the pork chop and Thai steak asada as your meals. Everything I've had from here is delicious! The only negatives I have are that the wait staff is slow and they can't make very good mixed drinks.

With a name like Gooney's what could possibly go wrong in the land of the Sod poodles? Not being locals and hungry we took a chance and did we luck out. Kimchi French fries were so good we devoured the platter in no time. Blueberry goat cheese salad with mandarin oranges was perfect. Salmon sushi roll nicely presented and again delicious. Wasabi contributed. Good selection of beers and good service. Only lingering regret: forgot to ask What exactly is s Sod Poodle?

Waited for 20 minutes before getting a drink and we'll over an hour for our food. The cooks and waitress kept visiting with customers behind the counter and back in forth in the kitchen. Not worth the time. Terrible service. Had to ask for drinks and no answer on where our food order is.

Everything was interesting on the menu. I wanted to try it all. We were in town for a few days (Courtyard - wonderful!) and tried this place the last night, otherwise we'd go back. The food was delicious, the service top notch, the ambiance was comfortable and everyone was friendly. I even liked the music. Excellent!!

Gooney's is a unique place downtown that doesn't disappoint. Atmosphere is not great but so far the food has been. Not only is the food great, it's reasonable. We normally order the pork chops and believe me, they don't disappoint. They are grilled to perfection along with the vegetables and rice . We also get the jalapeño bacon wontons and they are excellent. Not to hot but just a little kick to them. Chicken fried rice is also good. Wait staff is always super friendly.

Great food and great family that owns this establishment! David has definitely tried to expand Asian cuisine and experimenting with different items to help bridge the gap between Asian food and its consumers.

If you are bringing a big appetite order the ribeye so delicious, tender and cooked to perfection! Also the drinks do not disappoint! Great laid back atmosphere! Will definitely come back !

This place is absolutely great! All of our food was fresh, timely, and very flavorful. The buns were toasted and all of the temperatures were great. They nailed the kimchi fries! Portions were generous and our server, Rachel, was very helpful. Easily a new go-to place for us.

I love the food but the wait time is ridiculous at lunchtime. I got here at 12:21pm and it's now 1:12pm and I still haven't got my food.

Ok, first off the reason for the two stars is NOT for the food. It's for the drunk "mother" of the waitress who was shuffling around drunk as hell, slurring her speech into her cell phone. After she finished her drink, they continued to serve her! Her language was atrocious. It made our dining experience VERY uncomfortable. It's a shame, this is my first time here and I'm nervous about coming back. I do want to come back because the food is delicious but if the drunk is there, I'll probably get my food to go.

Nice walk from Embassy Suites and restaurant came recommended. The ambiance was fun and eclectic. Wait time was a bit long for a Friday night. But the food was worth the wait! The fried wontons with bacon and jalapeños are fabulous! We ate the full plate and didn't have room for the burger we ordered. We did try a few bites though, and it was perfectly cooked with a bit of pink. Whenever we go to Amarillo we will be sure to stop back in for delicious food and nice service.

Well I didn't have a chance to rate the food because of the horrible service. We got there at 9:00 pm after a long day of traveling. Downtown Amarillo looked pretty cool and we are always open to Texas hospitality. However I guess the cool Asian fusion place didn't get the memo. We were sat after the waiter and I awkwardly locked eyes. He pointed at a table, I nodded, no words were exchanged. We were seated and given a one page menu . We casually read the menu and made our selections...and waited, and waited, and waited. To be fair it was busy, to the tune of maybe two other tables. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and waited a little longer. As it turns out, their resilience of not serving us won. We got up and walked out uncontested. Worst service I've received in Texas yet.

First time at this place. I loved the atmosphere... staff was chill and friendly. They played 90s rock music which was an extra bonus. It was a toss up between ordering the Shrimp basil or sea bass. I ended up ordering the smothered sea bass and it was AMAZING! The sauce was so rich and savory. The sea bass was perfectly cooked, the veggies were fresh and the portions were perfect to not over engulfs. They were having Happy Hour which was a nice touch. I'm only here 2 days and I'm coming back for dinner again. Yes to this place.

My first Yelp review! Gooney's is owned by 2 great guys I know so I'm gonna be biased as fuck, but the food is also really really good. Every time I go I usually get the steak, which in my opinion is the best in Amarillo. It's different than most steaks because it's "Asian styled" but I like it a lot. The steaks are always extremely juicy, juicier than a girl's... never mind. The pork ribs and pork chops are also very tasty. If you're looking to order an appetizer, the cheese wontons are the absolute bomb. Another plus is the location: right on Polk street in the heart of the nightlife downtown. So many nights of drinking at Bodega's or Butler's and them stumbling into Gooney's for a good late meal.

Appetizer: Jalapeño Bacon Cheese Wontons (filled with cream cheese, minced garlic, jalapeño, bacon & chives in a crispy flour wrapping) Mine: Pan Fried Noodles w/ Beef (egg noodles sautéed in house brew soy sauce with cabbage, onion & carrots - Twisted Thai His: Sunset Salmon (a 5oz sprinkled with house herbs alongside w/ stir fried broccoli, carrots, zucchinis, snow peas & choice of rice) - beer We came for a meeting of more than 15 people @ 7pm & they had the table set up but as we were walking in they set the table with utensils and menus (we walked in at our reservation time). The restaurant holds 150 people, its décor is strange as the walls were made of brick and even though they had photos of old Amarillo, it looked out of place. They also had lights string above to create and mimic outdoor seating and the music was all over the place (50's music, new age etc.). Besides our huge table there were a few other patrons sitting on the opposite side of the restaurant and a few people at the bar. Our server was nice and polite she was the only server throughout the ENTIRE restaurant, she did a good job at keeping up with everyone's order. I ordered a Twisted Thai (Thai tea with Malibu Rum & Vodka) & my boyfriend ordered beer. My twisted Thai wasn't that great, I wanted condensed or evaporated milk but they had neither, I had to settle with half & half. For the beer, she brought a chilled glass, which is always awesome. Our appetizer was delicious but honestly if you put anything in a wrapper and deep fry it, it should taste good. The cream cheese, minced garlic, jalapeño, bacon & chives in a crispy flour wrapping wasn't consistent with the on our plate, which was disappointing. When our main entrees came out (see photos) they looked appetizing however when we bit into them my "Pan Fried Noodles" tasted EXTREMLY BASIC I would describe it as Chow Mein from a Chinese Fast Food Restaurant. His salmon on Sunset Salmon was the only food he enjoyed, he said it had great flavor and the salmon was cooked perfectly. The rice was dry & the veggies were over cooked. According to their FaceBook page "Gooney's is a mixture of true authentic Asian cuisine and uniquely cooked fusion of traditional Asian dishes" honestly in my opinion it isn't traditional. You don't come to a restaurant to just eat appetizers.
