Gorah Elephant Camp, Addo, Eastern Cape, South Africa - Explore & Book

"“Lions!” my husband whispers excitedly. It’s a chilly night and we’re huddled on the porch of our luxurious tent. From somewhere (up a tree?) our guide Colin is shining his torch in their direction. Having failed to spot any during our earlier game drive, Colin went to great lengths (or heights) to ensure we would not miss out on these majestic animals: a perfect example of the level of personalised service that epitomises Gorah. The historic homestead, in the heart of Addo Elephant Park and only 1 hour’s drive from Port Elizabeth, has been brought bang up to date with contemporary creature comforts and the 11 vast, stilted tents offer the ultimate in camping deluxe. Preheated beds, little chocolate elephants on your pillow, fresh lemonade by the pool and lavish silver-service feasts - this really is safari in style. The real treat, however, lies in the game viewing - and you don't even need to bounce about in an open-sided vehicle (though it is quite fun). Nothing beats the serenity of sipping gin & tonics on the old-style veranda of the main lodge, overlooking the scenic waterhole, and quietly observing herds of elephants and buffalos passing by. Truly magical. Highs The proximity of the waterhole and the sheer variety and density of animals trotting through the open campThe exhilarating feeling that only a rather thin sheet of canvas separates you from lions and friends at nightThe private game drive with our knowledgeable and wildly entertaining guide ColinThe delicious Amarula-infused hot chocolate served at the end of our chilly evening game driveAddo is home to the densest elephant population on earth, as well as rhinos, lions, even leopards - and it remains malaria-free Lows The pool area is a bit bland, but who comes here to lie by the pool? A quick dip in between game drives will sufficeThere's no electricity in the tents, but this in no way dampens the sense of luxury - quite the oppositeThe tents are close to each other, so be discreet or your neighbours might avoid you at breakfastThere are no massages or beauty treatments on offerAll this magic comes at a price and Gorah is expensive with a capital E. However, the memories are bound to last a lifetime, so don’t hesitate to remortgage your house (or visit in low season)" - Maia Tarrant

This is an incredible place to stay and watch the amazing animals at the waterhole, that visit day, and night. The Elephants sightings are second to none!||All the staff are fabulous, and can’t do enough to ensure we had the very best of everything throughout our stay. Thank you Megan Pagel and the team for all your hard work, and the warmest of welcomes. We will definitely be back to see you all.||Kevin Farrell was our phenomenal safari guide, and he ensured we got to see and enjoy everything in the conservancy. His knowledge and experience made the trip unforgettable.

This was our 3rd visit to Gorah and the magic is still there. The tented suites are really special and have everything you need and more. The Manor House is a step back in time and nothing is too much trouble - the staff are a credit to the Hunter Hotel group. Thanks to Donald for making our time in the Manor House part of the experience. Game drives explore the vast terrain of the Addo Elephant National Park with comfortable vehicles and Chivan, our ranger was passionate about making sure our experience was extra special. Enjoy the waterhole at the lodge - anything can wander down, including lions 🦁

Wonderful place, attentional to detail was great. In the evening heating would be turned on in the rooms and hot water bags placed in the bed so that when I arrived to the room, the room and bed were toasty. The food provided was top notch. Everything was very clean. The menu with your name and meal preferences was a great touch. Little African poems left on the bed was very sweet.

An hour and a half drive from PE (last 50 mins is unsealed but sort of includes your "first game drive" as you enter the camp grounds) Gorah is an intimate, comfortable, impeccable service experience with the added bonus of most of the big 5 probable to be observed (you wont find Leopards in Gorah). Our tent was very luxurious, comfortable, spacious and well appointed with nice touches (such as sherry for a pre dinner tipple). I suggest you listen carefully to the shower instructions though as the team show you around your tent as it is a bit tricky to get right. Dining is a pleasure with attentive service and an excellent chef and team .. as the camp has few tents it is also a nice intimate experience in the main house for couples. When outside for breakfast or lunch keep an eye on the birds and monkeys as they are rather cheeky! The game drives are an early start (for sunrise) and early evening (for sunset) with plenty of of time to relax in the day .. we didn't try a walk but they can be arranged and also night drives. The wildlife is abundant (the waterhole at the front of the main house was a big draw and we observed all manner of large and small game day and night. We can't thank the team (Simone, Werner, Mavis, Donald in particular) enough for a fantastic few days with them and we hoep to be back soon.

One of the very best experiences of our lives, so relaxing, you can feel your blood pressure go down ☺️|The hotel/main lodge was unbelievable, lit by candlelight at night and a watering hole just in front where we watched zebras and elephants while we sat enjoying a G&T.|Service was excellent from everybody we met.|We were even given personalised water bottles from the member of staff on the main gate.|The food was the best we had in South Africa and we had some great food but this was a step up. And the same goes for the wine. We were never hungry!|Small things like our names being on our menus was amazing and its small touches like this that really makes the experience more memorable.|The two Game Drives each day were incredible and we saw every animal we hoped to see. Nice things like blankets & hot water bottles on the jeep when it was chilly were very welcome and on the morning game drive our guide would set up hot drinks and snacks, this was only bettered by the afternoon game drives refreshments being a G&T and more snacks. 🍸 |The room (one of 11 Luxury Thatched Tents) was so lovely with a huge attention to detail and amazing service all day, especially the 'turn down' service that often included the little heater being put on for us and a hot water bottle in the bed on the cooler nights.|There was a full drinks cabinet in the room with the ice being replenished regularly.|With the canvas sides you felt like you were living outside some times.|Special mentions go to Kevin who was the most supreme of guides and great bar tender in the afternoon 😀 and his wife Simone, front of house. What a team! And thanks also to Donald.|We had the very best time ever thanks to everyone we met at Gorah and we would highly recommend this experience.

Simone Coetzee was a fantastic host at Gorah and Werner LeRoux was a fabulous guide. This was our 2nd visit to Gorah and the facility, accommodation and overall Safari experience was incredible. All inclusive with meals with great food, a morning and late afternoon drive and the opportunity to see animals up close as they come to the watering hole located behind the main lodge. Sleeping in the luxury tents and hearing the sounds of the night were also a highlight. Thanks so much to Simone, Werner and the lodge staff in making our 2nd visit as incredible as the first. This is a great safari experience.

This was one of the best places we have ever stayed in. From the moment we arrived until we left we had the most fantastic and amazing time. The people who work here are very friendly and efficient, they could not have been any more helpful. Our guide Werner was first class, he really made our stay. He is so knowledgeable and enthusiastic and we learnt so much and saw so many animals and birds. The watering hole in front of the main residence is a highlight and you can sit here for hours watching the ever changing animal scenery. |Every meal we had was delicious, thanks to the chef. The “tents” are very spacious and comfortable with a lovely outdoor seating area for more animal spotting. Nothing is too much trouble for those who work here and we are already thinking about a return visit. Diolch yn fawr iawn. Thank you very much to everyone at Gorah.

Unforgettable Safari experience with knowledgable guides in the wonderful Addo national park. Lodge is situated around a waterhole where hundreds of animals drink water every day (elephants, zebras, lions, rhinos, ostriches, warthogs, kudus, etc.) Nice luxury tents that allow an authentic experience of „sleeping in the wild“.
