"Snaga shadyoutdoor table overlooking the slow-moving Waikato River and enjoy excellent tapas at one of regional New Zealand 's best restaurants. Expandingfrom a smaller, cozier location on nearby Hood Street, Gothenburg is popular for shared plates with a global flavor, and its menu encompasses lots of vegetarian selections. Try the potato gnocchi with Kikorangi blue cheese from New Zealand's Kapiti Dairy, or challenge your palate with the spicy kimchi-and-pork dumplings. Gothenburg is also a big supporter of the Hamilton craft-brewing fraternity, and the beverage list often includes seasonal small-batch beers from local microbreweries like Brewaucracy and Shunters Yard."

I really love the high ceiling. It makes it extra classy. The food is delicious, no complaints at all. The plating is well executed. From savoury to sweet dishes, perfect. It did take a while for the dishes to arrive and they did bring it out one by one, needs improvement on this. We also highly appreciate how they have a list for people with food allergies, you can tell how much they care and are very careful. Makes it easier for us to decide for our friend who has a strict diet. Would come back here. I recommend. It could be expensive.

We had a fantastic time at Gothenburg. The atmosphere was amazing, the food was incredible; the Gnocchi and Beef Ragu were two particularly remarkable dishes. The service was in a league of its own; we had Ella looking after us and she was outstanding - Making sure we had drinks sorted in a consistent and timely manner, without once feeling like it was an interruption. Thank you, Ella, for making it such a great experience. Will definitely be going back!

This is one of the top restaurants I’ve visited in Hamilton. The staff are friendly, and although the food is priced on the higher side, the quality justifies the cost. However, I found the sirloin steak to be overly salty and peppery, even though I don’t usually prefer bland food. Personally, while the steak portion was generous, it didn’t meet the high standards set by the other dishes. The other dishes were truly perfect and delicious! Next time I visit, I’ll likely skip the steak.

The prawn and scallop tortellini was my favourite dish. The crayfish bisque beneath it was delicious. It had a great atmosphere too, I'm looking forward to visiting them again to try the rest of the menu.

You will never eat a polenta like theirs. What a delicious one! Crispy on the outside (which is common everywhere) but inside was so soft, it melted every bite. Keep in mind also that some items in the menu change slightly, but the base is the same.

Really enjoyed dinner here, wish I came hungrier if I’m being honest. Everything on the menu looked amazing. I LIVE for tapas so this was exactly my kind of vibe. Great open space with additional outdoor seating 3 steps away from the river. You have to know it’s here though because the signage not too great but honestly I forgive them for that because everything was amazing. Started with a cosmopolitan and raspberry mojito for hubby. Love when cocktails give you a buzz without being too alcoholy, these were great. The cheese plate was fun, we had the Brie and the Gouda. Then came the beef tataki which was phenomenal, followed by the prawn and scallop tortellini that I could eat a whole bucket of. Top it off with a blueberry coconut milk based panacotta which was perfectly light and not overly sweet. The staff was great, very nice and helpful. I really wanted to try the crudo but sadly we came late and they were already sold out. That says something though. Love the concept of this place. You think tapas so Spanish…but that’s only 1/2 right. The owner is 1/2 Spanish 1/2 Swedish, which you only get from the name of the restaurant and the wall of Swedish things adjacent the bathrooms. That threw me for a loop so I asked the server about it and she explained about the owner, and yet the head chef is a Kiwi and the other chefs are primarily Asian. What a concept. Really liked this place a lot!

Gothenburg Restaurant is an absolute gem that continues to set the bar high for dining experiences. From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed into a warm, inviting atmosphere, perfect for a relaxed yet refined evening. The combination of elegant décor, soft ambient lighting, and a lively yet intimate setting made for a fantastic dining experience. Now, let’s talk about the food—because wow, every dish was a showstopper! We started with the seared beef tataki, which was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The tender slices of beef were perfectly complemented by the crunchy fried shallots, tangy pickled vegetables, and a deliciously balanced sauce that brought everything together. Each bite was packed with texture and umami goodness! Next came the slow-cooked lamb ribs, and they were nothing short of phenomenal. The meat was fall-off-the-bone tender, coated in a rich, flavorful glaze that had just the right amount of sweetness and spice. The addition of fresh red onions and red chili gave it an extra layer of depth, while the lemon wedge on the side provided a refreshing contrast. This dish was a definite highlight! And of course, we couldn’t pass up the dumplings, which were absolutely divine. The delicate, handmade parcels were drenched in a bold and aromatic sauce that had a perfect balance of spice and savoriness. The fresh microgreens on top added a pop of freshness, making each bite a delightful experience. Beyond the incredible food, the service was top-notch. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive, ensuring that we had everything we needed without being intrusive. They were more than happy to provide recommendations, which made the experience even more enjoyable. Gothenburg is truly a must-visit for anyone in Hamilton looking for a top-tier dining experience. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion, having a casual dinner, or just in the mood to indulge, this restaurant delivers every single time. Can’t wait to come back and try more dishes!

Dinner for 4 catch up dinner. Beautiful setting. We sat outside. Service was prompt..would have liked out server to wait for everyone to be at the table before telling us the specials. Cocktails were solid. Ate nearly all the carnivore dishes on the menu. Stand outs for us were the crudo, beef tataki, lamb ribs and kung Pao chicken. In fact ordered two lots of lamb ribs. First serving was quite dry. Second service was perfectly succulent. Both still delicious. Highly recommended for date night or catching up with friends.

Yelp
We went to Gothenburg in Hamilton for lunch. It was awesome! Staff were very welcoming and friendly during the whole meal. We ordered the beef ragu, calamari, line caught fish, double cooked lamb ribs, and the watermelon salad. All were awesome choices!! Really recommend the watermelon salad and the lamb ribs! The location was also cool! Massive magnolias were behind the property and a nice river was there too. There was also parking right on the street. Overall, a very nice place! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Surprise that we didn't hear more about this place before coming. Such great food and even better service. Really really enjoyed the tapa style dishes because we were able to try more flavors. Some things were so good. We ended up getting a second serving like the lamb ribs. Can't go wrong with anything and the ambiance and restaurant were beautiful. Call in for a reservation if you need one.

The service, food and ambiance were of spectacular quality. This is one of Hamilton's finest restaurants, particularly delightful for occasions.

Yelp
One of the very best meals we've had during our 10ish days in New Zealand! We loved it so much that we went back again for a second lunch. The food is tapas, served as small plates meant for sharing. The waitress recommended for a party of 2 to order 3 items as a good sized meal, or 4 items if we were really hungry. This was an accurate estimate! It's tucked away a little bit, located at the bottom of a set of stairs on the side of an ANZ building. Recommendations strongly recommended, unless you go at off peak hours. Crispy fried chicken: 5 stars. So flavorful and crispy. The dipping sauce was tasty and subtle. Pumpkin salad: 5 stars. We tried this because it sounded unique. I was a little bit skeptical but it did not disappoint. I licked the spoon clean afterwards. The toasted pumpkin seeds were a delightful little crunchy accent every few bites. Lamb empanadas: 4 stars. The lamb was delicious. Not too gamey. Pan seared tuna: 4 stars. I'm not the biggest fan of raw fish, but this was pretty good. Loved the sweet pineapple curry sauce that it came with! Pumpkin gnocchi: 3.5 stars. Tons of veggies and was very visually appealing, loved the pumpkin sauce, but the mouthfeel of the gnocchi itself was on the dense side. It dried my mouth out to chew on them. Service was great. If I were a local, I'd definitely be a regular here! Would love to try more dishes. Excellent food overall.

Yelp
Gothenburg serves tapas-style small plates. We loved it so much that we ate here twice within a few days! It's located in an ANZ building, down at the bottom of a set of outdoor stairs -- below street level. Reservations are advisable. Our favorite dishes were the crispy fried chicken and the pumpkin salad (we don't even really like pumpkin normally!). The pan seared tuna and lamb empanadas were good as well. Service was excellent. The ambiance is kind of classy+hipster.

Yelp
We got here a little late without a reservation and were seated quickly. I cant remember which tapas we ordered but they were all good. There was even a nice river view from the patio.

Yelp
(From my previous review - re-posting since they moved to Grantham Street location) I've been to Gothenburg on a number of occasions, and it never disappoints me. In general, my husband and I try to go here when we don't have the kids (i.e. "date night"). It's not that Gothenburg is decidedly child-un-friendly, but it definitely has a more adult and sophisticated atmosphere and menu that doesn't really suit my 3-year-old. We also like to take guests that are visiting us here for dinner and they've always enjoyed it. Gothenburg has a nice selection of beers (according to my husband) and usually he orders something that's on tap. The plates here are generally small, but some are larger and more "share-able" than others (e.g. the skirt steak with Asian marinade is a go-to for us). I've also really liked the sliders, patatas bravas and Swedish meatballs. We've also had the baked potato ravioli, the stuffed peppers, and edamame - all were great. Though we tend to repeat order what we've already fallen in love with, I suspect that you would be happy with nearly anything on the menu that appeals to you. I would definitely recommend for a group of adults or date night.

Yelp
Gothenburg Restaurant is an absolute favourite restaurant of my immediate and wider family and friends, since moving to Hamilton from Auckland 5 years ago. We have tried out a lot of the restaurants in Hamilton, but Gothenburg is our choice always when celebrating special occasions especially birthdays. We all love the food and sharing the tapas dishes as we get to try a bit of each. I think the largest table we've had was for a birthday celebration with 14 of us! Not only is the food fantastic and never disappoints, but the staff are very welcoming and helpful in suggestions of how many of each tapas dish to order so that all of us can get a taste of each dish. They have an excellent range of craft beers that beer drinkers will enjoy. I prefer my wine and they have an excellent selection to choose from. We don't always order desserts because we are usually too full from the tapas dishes, but their desserts look wonderful and the few times I've been able to squeeze in a dessert, they have been heavenly. Whenever we have overseas family & friends staying with us in Hamilton, we make it a point to include a dinner at Gothenburg. Everyone we have taken there has thoroughly enjoyed the food and the ambience. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who loves good food and good service.

Yelp
Just wow. Incredible scenic spot and the food was all delicious. Everything was high-end gourmet and beautifully, thoughtfully plated. Nice to have a great tapas place so close to everything -- you can get by on 3 of the tapas for 2 but w head to try more and were not disappointed with anything!

Yelp
Visiting NZ from the states and stopped in here for dinner. No question the best meal I have ever eaten. Pumpkin gnocchi Polenta chips Sirloin Calamari Kim chi dumplings Meatballs And a bottle of bubbles. If you are in Hamilton this place should be a definite stop!

Yelp
Passing thru on our two week NZ adventure. We hadn't planned to stop here specifically, but showed up at the top of our search list when we needed something tasty. Gothenburg delivered. We had 5 tapas and every single one was delicious. I could list them all, but our random selections and results assure that your tastes will certainly be met. One specific dish I highly recommend every meat lover order is the Pork Belly. Yes. Just... Yes. Thanks for the awesome food and pleasant service!

Yelp
For one of the best views of the Waikato River, head along to Gothenburg. With plenty of options for indoor or outdoor dining, a superb wine list, eclectic craft beer selection and some of the best tapas this side of the Bombay Hills (south of Auckland), you'd be foolish to not dine here. Excellent, attentive & knowledgable staff make this place even more special. Favourite dishes: mushroom & thyme aracini, polenta chips, skagen rora, and spicy pork & kim chi dumplings.

Yelp
The restaurant was a little hard to find hidden under and almost behind the ANZ building and down through the parking lot of Panama. But once we were there it was a delicious treat. We had the prawns, just okay. The spicy chicken, very good and the beef tataki, excellent. Just the right amount of food so we didn't leave feeling stuffed. As we are just passing through we won't be back but we wanted to be sure others who use Yelp regularly can have the same delightful experience we had.

Yelp
We stopped by here on a Friday in early May at 5:30pm and were lucky to get a table. You definitely need to have a reservation. It's very upscale in a trendy kind of way which feels strange for New Zealand. I don't want to say it's uppity but... They were out of a lot of their beer & wine menu. The gnocci and the arancini were extremely good but the calamari wasn't good. Service is decent but maybe not as good as it should be for this style restaurant? It wasn't bad by any means though. Giving four stars for the gnocci really ... it was seriously seriously good.

Yelp
This is a fantastic place to have beer and delicious small plates. The new location is beautiful, just near to the river and with an ample open patio when the weather permits. I had wonderful crispy pork belly, seared tuna, prawns and Belgium beer. I always try to come back every time I am at Hamilton.
