Hello, I am a local to Monument Valley. That being said I have seen the rises and falls of the company's customer service, presentation, etc. I also know that the Goulding's "Corporation" has had "new management" come in and not in the good way. I'm looking at you Navajo Nation Hospitality Enterprise but I digress. Onto my visit, I am a college student so I had come back to the reservation for awhile and wanted something nostalgic so I came here. Little did I know how unrecognizable this place had become both in character and service.
One thing that I noticed off the bat was the service. The busser had to seat us instead of the waiter which isn't a big surprise. She smiled and was pleasant the whole interaction. The waiter on the other hand was not. She only took our order, didn't ask us if we needed anything else or if we "were doing okay" as you might be asked at other resturants or before new management came in. The interactions that we had (the ones stated above), she had an attitude and treated us less than important than the other tourist customers. I realize this is a big problem: Navajos or locals come back after being off the reservation hoping to be welcomed back with a warm embrace but instead are treated as though they are not important. Then those that do not like being treated that way never come back. Again, I digress, we had to wave down the busser to ask for things like sauces, silverware, refills, etc. Because our waiter never came back to check on us. She only came back to give us the check.
As far as the food, the frybread was white... as in not fried enough and they might as well have served the dough on the plate. I understand wanting to appease to a certain demographic which are the tourists who come to visit Monument Valley who also like things their way meaning, not crispy bread... The problem I have with this is that you're doing it where there are Navajos, and where the frybread you are alterating originates.
I want to go back to the point that I made with me being a local. Because, when the transfer from Goulding's being privately owned to being owned by Navajo Nation Hospitality Enterprise we were told that the new manager of the this business was going to be Caucasian. Again and again we were reassured that nothing would change dramatically and that the business would keep its character and atomosphere that it has always had and the change would not be noticable. I'm not sorry to say that it is noticable and quite frankly, shameful. Shameful that this business is not being hospitable to Navajos that are local or are coming back home because of their homesickness and want a nostalgic experience most comparable to when they were kids. Shameful that this business is destroying what Mike and Harry Goulding as well as the owners that took over after them worked hard to accomplish.
Respectfully, I will not be coming back here if I can help it. If and when I do I hope that the management changes in a way that caters to the businesses history as well as local history that you can see through its customer service, food, and presentation.
