It was a sunny morning, and breakfast at Governor’s Café turned out to be a delightful choice. Known as one of Dunedin’s oldest breakfast spots, established in 1977, the café exudes a warm, welcoming atmosphere that complements its reputation . The menu is extensive, offering everything from toasted muesli and waffles to ciabatta-based dishes. I opted for the Big Brekkie—a generous serving of bacon, eggs, grilled tomatoes, and hash browns atop toasted ciabatta . For those preferring lighter fare, options like eggs with mushrooms are available. Service was friendly and efficient, and the coffee, made with locally roasted beans, was smooth and satisfying. The café maintains a clean environment with well-organized seating, enhancing the overall dining experience. Prices are reasonable, offering good value for the quality and portion sizes. Overall, Governor’s Café provided a pleasant breakfast experience, combining hearty meals, attentive service, and a cozy setting.

Delicious healthy food. The young dude at the cashier was extremely pleasant and you can tell he loves his job

Fantastic for parents and kids. They have an upstairs play area that’s fenced off with a viewing window while we eat. Great music too, a place that understands atmosphere instead of just blasting pop. Lovely friendly staff. After a terrible trip to Dunedin and a rough night with the kids, this was a fantastic start to our day.

This place never misses, We got the pancakes with banana & bacon with yogurt and the governors breaky added holandaise. We’ve also tried the Benedict and that’s yum too. Lovely service always as well. Been a year since we’ve visited and nothing has changed. Everything is spot on 🫶🏼slay

Love this cafe. Staff are great, especially Anthony, he's the best Staff member for front of house as he knows his stuff and is very friendly. I love the food, as I've tried a lot of different things on the menu. One of my favorites is the scrambled eggs with toast and a side of fried potatoes. They have upstairs and downstairs seating so there is plenty of room. Thanks team for a great place to eat.

Came in with my sister and the 2 kids for breakfast while I was visiting town. Delicious food!! I had the salmon Benedict and pancakes. Demolished my plates. Service was super friendly. The kids play room was cool too! My nephew enjoyed it! Still has that rustic homely feeling as before when I used to work here back in 2018 but now with a touch of modern upgrades. Will be back again when I next visit.

Google
Amazing little rustic vibe cafe. Family friendly. Even when really busy, staff super helpful and so friendly! Highly recommend the porridge 😋 my daughter had the chocolate pancakes (normal size) & they were HUGE and delicious. I had an oat flat white, and am very fussy with my coffee - I literally searched 'best coffee Dunedin', & Governor's Cafe was closest to us at the time. Google didn't let me down. Warm and cosy with ample rustic seating. Great menu options and cabinet food. The wall art is incredible! So fun! Thanks team.

Google
Great place for a relaxed coffee and brunch/lunch. Kids room upstairs means peace is possible even with children in tow. Great place for a coffee and a quiet read, on your tod, as well. Everything I've eaten so far has been yum and good portion sizes. Staff are great and make you feel welcomed, nothing is a problem.

Yelp
This was a great place to eat breakfast. We popped in before our day out on the Otago Peninsula and were delighted to find something for everyone. The eggs Benedict with salmon was excellent as were the scrambled eggs, porridge with berries, and the chocolate pancakes. The presentation was perfect. Service was good too, the friendly staff ensured we were welcomed.

Yelp
This place is ok. Not sure it deserves a five star review but I have no other references in that area.

Yelp
I've been to the Governor's Cafe twice. Unfortunately, I have yet to meet the governor who is in charge of the cafe. However, I cannot complain as he seems to be doing an outstanding job. They serve this roasted vegetable salad with kumara and squash and stuff which is both delicious and nutritious. Also, my improv mate Tyla works here and he seems to do a good job. He does not give me a friends/family discount yet, but this is something I hope to change in the future.

Yelp
Really lovely cafe close to town and the student area. The decor is pretty basic canteen style with old wooden tables and benches but the staff are very friendly and helpful and the place is clean. My mum had a 50% off voucher from her entertainment book so we decided to stop in for a late lunch after shopping up a storm. We both ordered a chicken burger and a homemade lemonade. The lemonade was just right for my tastes? Not too sweet and not too sour. But the burger was the knock out. A giant bread bap filled with a battered chicken breast, crispy bacon, salad leaves, tomato with an amazing cranberry jam and aioli dressing. The burger is served with fries and the ketchup comes in the very kiwiana tomato shaped sauce bottle. They also had on offer some delicious looking slices that I wanted to gobble down but at $4.50 a pop mum decided we could make our own instead.

Yelp
Good coffee, pancakes, and the eggs benedict were out of this world. Great view of an old historic building outside. Cool cozy vibes inside and great music. Loved it!

Yelp
Great spot for breakfast in Dunedin! The eggs Benedict were top notch and hard to beat the cool view to the Knox church across the street

Yelp
Great breakfast options at this little cozy spot. Packed with picnic tables and friendly service. Many breakfast options from which to choose, including eggs, pancakes, and porridge. Multiple coffee options and non-dairy options for vegans! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Tasty pre-made sandwiches that the staff will happily warm. Friendly service. Very good coffee and the best chai tea yet in New Zealand. Free internet was also nice.

Yelp
This place is the bees knees. Such amazing food, so filling and not a bad price at all. I would roll in squad deep with my friends during my summer there and splash fat cash on the items offered. Best meal after a long hard day of working out. If you're reading this it's because Governor's Cafe is on your radar and my message to you is "go!"

Yelp
Would go there again, excellent service, great food and coffee, great venue looking forward to go there again soon.
