We’re here for the lobster roll and the blueberry desserts. I also have an award-winning haddock chowder, that was actually pretty good. I don’t think I can go just for the chowder or the lobster roll, but it was good. The service was very friendly and the place was very clean. It did take a little over an hour to order it and get out of there so if you’re in a hurry, I’d probably avoid this place.

We ate at Governor's a couple times during our visit to Bangor. Breakfast tasted okay. Went back for dinner and the lobster rolls were not fresh tasting. Fries tasted like old fishy oil. Prices were good if you caught the specials. Otherwise the prices were a bit high.

Google
Love to stop here when I am in Bangor always a good meal. My only complaint is a bowl of chowder is over $13. It's good but that is a high price. Love the crinkle fries.

Our waitress Jennifer was very pleasant and attentive. Comfort food was great as always!

We were hangry and on our way to the Bangor airport and stopped in. We were delighted first by a lil train going around the dining room ceiling. Then the food came and it was really tasty. The fries were excellent both waffle and regular, the Philly cheesesteak was enormous, the habanero jam was delicious, and my mom really enjoyed the actual pieces of lobster in the lobster chowder. We are sad to have not had room for the delicious looking deserts and we are double sad there is no Governor's Restaurant in our state of Illinois.

Google
The food was good, although pricey. Their wait staff was pleasant, but at times, their promptness left a lot to be desired. I rated atmosphere low because it isn't the most clean establishment. We go there two or three times a year while in the Bangor area and it is pretty consistent on all counts. Haven't been to any of their other locations, so this doesn't reflect on them.

Google
Another great visit to Governor’s! Hard to choose a meal since there are so many yummy selections! The portion sizes are still very generous. Prices have gone up quite a bit but meals are still a good value. Prices for the takeout desserts are ridiculous though - almost $4 for ONE golf ball sized peanut butter ball? The 1/2 dozen cookie deal is still fairly reasonable. $6-7 for a single eclair? Not so much.

Google
I liked their train. The lobster bisque had big chunks of lobster in it. Haddock sandwich was better later as leftovers since I couldn’t finish it with everything else. Should have gotten the pie. Also, I left my hat: it looks like litter. But I’d love to get it back. :(

Yelp
We were all hungry and decided to stop in for some lunch. They were pretty busy and we had a wait time of 15 minutes. No worries. We were shown our table and our server was super sweet and patient with us. I ordered the lobster roll with French fries. It was good. I was a bit put off by the lettuce in the roll. Hubby ordered the poutine but was a bit disappointed the cheese was shredded mozzarella instead of cheese curds. He still liked it. My MIL ordered chowder. She loved it. My son ordered the chicken tenders with French fries. He liked it. Everything was good. Food was adequate but the service was wonderful. Also, they have many desserts and baked goods at the front. However, I behaved myself and opted against them. Great service. Good food. We'll be back!

Yelp
This place is great! It has a little bit of everything and a delicious bakery on site. You can just walk in and purchase from. The servi e was great. Everyone is polite. We will definitely be repeat customers.

Yelp
Even if we had to wait a little bit for service our waitress apologize profusely for the delay. Which honestly, it was probably less than 10 mins. So for me that's a none issue. Plus everything else came super fast after. Almost like she was trying to make up for it. She had nothing to make up for. When she serviced us, we already knew what we wanted. I had the lobster roll which I loved. No butter or mayo in it. Just how I love it, the roll was buttered and toasted. So to me that's more than enough butter to go along with my lobster. My partner had the Reuben. He's from NYC, so very picky on his Reuben and he actually loved this one. Great food, great atmosphere and the price was also worth it. For the 2 of us it was right around $50. So very reasonable in pricing. I will absolutely go back when I travel in this area again.

Yelp
I can't say that I appreciated it. I don't particularly like sharing my eating space with mice. Absolutely unacceptable and unsanitary. Governors in Waterville Maine Staff didn't have much of a response

Yelp
We've eaten here twice so far this trip. Really good food at a decent price. We had Lillian wait on us tonight. She was engaging and friendly. Really added to the experience tonight.

Yelp
First time checking this out for breakfast. We had a toddler visiting (with his parents) who woke us up very early so this worked. Kid friendly spot. The food was what I would label as usual diner food. Good prices and hits the spot. We all shared the MASSIVE cinnamon roll which was warm and soft. Diet doesn't exist this early so I got the banana bread French toast and that really takes the French toast game up a notch. We'd come back.

Yelp
Really enjoyed my takeout from Governor's! Called in my order and it was ready to go when I arrived. I love seeing the glass dessert case when you walk in. Everything in there always looks so attractive. I got the meatloaf (1 slice) with a baked potato and Caesar salad. Everything was excellent! It was a very generous portion of meatloaf. The salad was perfectly portioned. My only complaint was that the food was a tad less hot than I'd like but for takeout I can't complain too much about that!
google avatar

Wistlin W.

Yelp
We eat breakfast here and get a lot of take out. The take out orders are always correct. Love the chocolate no bake cookies and the raspberry filled sugar cookies too.
google avatar

Yelp
This restaurant used to be a value restaurant, but now i just dont get why they think they could charge outrageous prices for simple dishes. Oh yeah, because they can. When you see $40 on a menu here, their gouging. Just like most restaurants now, governors don't put the price of their drinks. This seems to be the trend nowadays because I believe we won't pay 4 bucks for a soda. It's too bad because this was an option for a decent breakfast, but it's a total skip. The food is just a step above hospital cafeteria food. You can tell from the clientele that they are bringing in that in about 10 to 15 years. I predict this franchise will go under, if not sooner.

Yelp
I went here last night for Takeout of a Lobster Roll and two pieces of blueberry pie. The staff were all pleasant and very helpful. We liked it so much that we went back today on the way to the airport for some sweet treats. We ordered a giant cinnamon roll for grandma, a few pumpkin chocolate chip cookies for mom and I, and a pumpkin whoopie pie which I highly recommend! Again this visit the staff was super friendly and accommodating. Next trip I would love to dine in here. You could tell it was well loved and enjoyed by the locals!

Yelp
We went to a diner on vacation. Why do that? Why waste your time? Well, fair traveler, I assure you this was time not wasted! This is a small chain diner surviving in the COVID era. Still, when the advertised specials lured us in, we were treated like royalty. Led past the bakery case, we ordered appetizers and the special. They forgot the appetizer (but also on the bill), though with the complimentary leads and the entrees, we didn't even need the forgotten first course -- and looking back, we wouldn't have had room for it! The food was quick and delicious, the drinks were always topped off, and we ate our fill. Heck, we even ordered a cream puff the size of an infant's head to take back to our hotel room. Ten out of five stars. The next time we wind up six hours north of home, we'll definitely be back. We'd even go out of our way to eat here, and that's rarely something I say about a diner!

Yelp
Governor's has always been a great place to get good home cooked style food. They're known for their desert case with a large amount of cakes, pies, cookies, eclairs, Whoopie pies, etc, to eat in or take out. The staff is always very nice.
google avatar

Jackie S.

Yelp
Governor's is your standard diner but YO...YO YO YO...their cakes are INSANE. I had an omelet and it was delicious and the vegetables were super fresh and it was filled with ham. Get their cinnamon bread on the side. Also...that blueberry lemon cake. I'm going to dream about it the rest of my life. It was bigger than my face. Funny, the waitress asked if we wanted one slice or two. One slice can feed a small country for a year. No joke.
google avatar

Diane H.

Yelp
Early Saturday morning (8am) and the restaurant was filling up with regulars I'd guess. Overall an ok breakfast with good service. I had the vegetarian omelet and a blueberry muffin. Never thought that the muffin would come toasted (and it's not on the menu). It was good toasted, just not my expectations. I guess my real issue was it was cold in the restaurant, and that made it a bit uncomfortable. Prices were a little high ($21 tip included) for an omlet, muffin and soda, but I think everything is going up. I'm looking for a weekly breakfast spot and will keep looking.

Richard M.

Yelp
I and the Mrs ordered seafood at Governors and it was overcooked and tasted of old cooking oil. Total waste of 70 bucks.

Brian W.

Yelp
Dude. You can totally stuff your face here at the breakfast buffet for like 14 dollars. Is it good? You can totally stuff your face here at the breakfast buffet for like 14 dollars.

Yelp
If you love baked goods, this is the place for you! They have giant cinnamon rolls the size of dinner plates. Giant rice krispie treats, peanut butter cups, moon pies, eclairs and more! Portions to dine in are huge! We couldn't eat it all. We took half the cinnamon roll and an eclair home. I had the eggs Benedict with a generous portion of ham and a fruit cup (more like a bowl) overflowing. He had sausage, eggs, bacon, potatoes and toast. This place is for people with big appetites for carbs and meat. The service was friendly and prompt. Plenty of scenic murals of natural Maine on the walls. Place is spacious and well lit. If you just want baked goods, the bakery is right at the entrance. Will return next time we have a craving for carbs.

Yelp
Order our meals to go. 4 thanksgiving dinner. Disappointed they no longer serve real turkey. Didn't care for it. The compress meat doesn't taste the same. The rolls tasted funny but the coleslaw was good. If we're in the area again. We will definitely give them another try. Dine in for sure.
google avatar

Wendy L.

Yelp
The desserts are fantastic! Delicious doesn't cover it. I usually have the Turkey dinner and I did again today. When the food arrived, the portions were half the size of those I used to get. The taste was ok but not the amazingly yummy taste of former meals there. Also, the prices are higher. Sandwiches seemed the usual size.

Joan K.

Yelp
Food was great! The waiter was kind and got our order exactly as we ordered it. It did take 23 times for the train to go around until we got our food. And the train took exactly 47.16 seconds to go around the restaurant. We saw the Maine hockey head coach!

Yelp
We have always liked Governors. We appreciate places that serve seafood who offer full belly fried clams rather than just the strips. But for our first meal there since coming up from Florida, we took it easier on our discretionary spending budget by ordering elsewhere on the menu. I ordered the meat loaf meal with a baked potato and applesauce as my two sides. The meat loaf was fine and the applesauce seemed homemade. The potato seemed a little mealy, but it was certainly edible and unless they pre-bite it they can't tell which potatoes are the less tasty ones. My wife had the meatloaf mountain, which had mashed potatoes mixed in with the meatloaf slices. She was fine with her meal also, plus we took some home for a second lunch at home. They initially forgot to bring us our rolls at the start of the meal, but that is a minor sin in the larger scheme of things. We skipped dessert, knowing full well we would be buying something from their excellent bakery items on the way out the door. I am sure we will be going back there occasionally on our Bangor trips.

Martha B.

Yelp
Got takeout recently. Lobby was clean and staff was very friendly. Felt like "comfort food," so I got an order of macaroni with hotdogs and a salad. Salad was fresh and flavorful, with nice veggies. Macaroni dish was far too salty and not at all enjoyable, as a result.
google avatar

Becky G.

Yelp
Great atmosphere but that was it. We sat down and the table had to me wiped while we sat there. We placed our order and 20 min goes by, 30, 40... 1 hr and 30 min! The waitress did nothing to make our wait better- not even a dinner roll! She complained about her long shift and that she was there since 8am. While j feel for her, EVERY TABLE that was seated after us got served and left by the time we got our food. The turkey was ok and stuffing looked like it was thrown on the plate. Presentation was sub par. My daughter's boneless wings were OK and the french fries were rock hard and too crunchy. I was really upset that a manager, or cook, or anyone didn't come by to apologize for the wait. Instead we got excuse after excuse and a bill for our $39 meal. Really bummed that this was our experience for our last night in Bangor.

Lauren B.

Yelp
Dinner: Was delicious, not from Maine and wanted to know all the hype about regarding lobster rolls... lol not worth $31.99+ (as marked by some restaurants in my opinion), however it was worth try - refreshing, cool in temp, and light... with a lot of bread. Dessert: Exceptional... the lemon blueberry cake is a monster in size and great in taste. Service: Spencer was awesome. Didn't even have to ask for additional napkins. Ambiance: Approachable/homey, which is always great.

Yelp
I'm not sure what happened to Governors Restaurant in Bangor, but something sure did. my wife and I only dine out once every couple of months, and when we do we usually eat at Governors. We have always had a good experience there with a good meal. However, yesterday morning (Sunday Aug, 11, 2024) we had the breakfast buffet and were surprised to find that the food choices were fewer and much less appealing than usual. I sampled nearly every dish offered at the buffet and was very disappointed. Most of the food tasted like the over-processed food that is available in the frozen food section of BJ's or Sam's Club. Of all the staff that were working I only recognized one waitress, all of the others seemed to be new and very young. Also, there was no "sneeze guard" over the food. The staff were pleasant and helpful but ultimately we were there for a meal and were sadly disappointed. Honestly, I wish we had gone across the street to Mc'Donalds, at least the food tastes better and you get what you pay for. I'm sorry to say that we will not be back.

Yelp
I grew up going to Governors in Old Town, this was my first trip to the one in Bangor. It was a busy Sunday morning but the staff was wonderful and the food was comforting and took me back to when I was a kid. So much has changed around Bangor but not Governors. It was a pleasant homecoming.

Mike W.

Yelp
Food was good. Service was good. Not too pricey. Would go back. I know its a corporate chain restaurant but the location we visited was managed well and apparently clean. Our experience was good hope yours is too.
google avatar

Michael T.

Yelp
This is a regional chain but a regular stop for me when in Maine. I have fonder memories of the place several years ago; this being said, it is still not a good place to stop for a meal. The food is decent and well prepared. The service was friendly and adequate. There are several menu options so you may easily find the right dish for you. There is no wow factor here. It is simple no frills restaurant... well they do have that toy train that goes around the place overhead.
google avatar

April I.

Yelp
We visited Governor's Restaurant for Sunday breakfast and they did not disappoint! We were seated quickly, everything was very clean and sanitary, and we had the joy of being served by Josh. (This is my 2nd time having him as a server and he is really good at what he does!) The food was hot and literally cooked to perfection. So much so that I was moved to make sure a manager knew how much we enjoyed Josh, his service and the great food. We also stopped at their bakery counter on the way out and bought a humungous chocolate no bake cookie. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Randal M.

Yelp
Great service and very courteous staff which nowadays is very refreshing to experience. Oh yes! The food is good as well.
google avatar

Kris H.

Yelp
Very friendly waitstaff. Not impressed with the food. Very simple order of grilled home fries and English muffin, both items tasted old.
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
I can't say anything bad about this place, just can not say much wonderful either. The service was a little slow but they were pretty busy so it wasn't like the wait staff was just sitting around. Very friendly and attentive despite how busy they were. The food though. Everything was good quality but severely lacking in seasoning. Coming from the land of beer batter and chili, onion rings that don't even have salt just seems a little bland. Excellent service and good atmosphere but their spice drawer seems a little bare.

Yelp
Since I am from Southern California, I thought I would indulge in the Northeast delicacy, the lobster roll. Governor's was probably the closest place to my hotel that had seafood, so I called in an order. The roll was listed at about $17. (Which, if you know me, I'm always conscious of eating on a budget! But I thought, when in Maine, do as...) The last time I came to Maine about 3 years ago, I remember the roll I ordered was a pretty good size and came with sides, so that's what I was expecting when I ordered this roll, especially for the price of $18+ (from taxes). The staff was very friendly on the phone, so props for that. But when I picked up the bag, it was so light I was tempted to peek in to see if they had indeed put anything in there! It was in there, alright, but just really small and no sides. I thought the taste was really fresh. But I found myself still hungry after I was finished. So, I just don't have a rave review of this particular lobster roll, unfortunately.

Chris S.

Yelp
Food was ok I ordered baked stuffed haddock with lobster sauce, no lobster sauce on it , our waiter asked the kitchen they said they haven't had any all day, we'll why not tell your waitstaff. Our waiter was awesome

Dale B.

Yelp
Visited Governors for breakfast this morning- have been here for lunch several times Not disappointed- had the Hash Bash- Linda had the blueberry pancakes with 2 eggs Gotta tell the Hash Bash is enough for 2 big guys and was smashing good The service was exemplary and Amy our waitress said to us- nice to see you again She has a great personality- very professional and service was top notch Couple this with the spectacular bakery and the ever moving train for entertainment Governors gets a 7 on the yelp scale of 1-5 We look forward to our next visit Dale & Linda Behan Fort Worth Texas

Yelp
My wife and I stopped at Governor's in Bangor this morning, for breakfast. We were greeted as we walked in the door and seated promptly. Our waiter (Cody H.) almost immediately asked us if he could start us off with something to drink. Well, their coffee and hot chocolate were fabulous and my full, traditional (re: "BIG) Breakfast was nearly perfect!! My wife's Banana Bread French Toast was amazing, while our bacon and sausage were cooked ("extra crispy") to perfection! Also, our waiter was very personable, quick, friendly and attentive! We couldn't resist stopping at the counter, on the way out, for some scrumptious cookies and pastry, as well as ogling their other goodies! We can't wait to go back!!
google avatar

Sam D.

Yelp
When coming to Governor's, you can rely on a solid experience. The staff will be friendly. The food options will be endless. The dessert choices will be fabulous. And your server will continuously smile. For these, it's always an option you can rely on. The food is nothing above and beyond, but the overall experience is what makes them reliable when in the Bangor area. We came in for dessert for my daughter and dinner for myself. The buffalo chicken wrap was slightly spicier than usual but still so good. Their crinkle cut fries rank in my top 5 favorites. The pumpkin pie brownie with cream cheese filling was perfect for my daughter. We walked out happy campers!

Yelp
I grew up in Bangor, and Governor's was MY FAV for fried clams and homemade desserts. I finally moved back and Governor's was my first stop. I was VERY disappointed to say the least. It did take awhile to get a table.... then to order. That wasn't a problem for me because I knew I was getting the fried clams ... Well it took awhile, the clams were very old. The breading wasn't even attached to the clams. They were not even hot, no cocktail sauce to dip in. Only 1 slice of old lemon. My rice pilaf was hard as a rock and dry, you can tell it had been microwaved for at least 20 minutes. My baked potato came plain, no condiments, not even butter or salt and pepper asked for some but didn't get them for 10 minutes..... by then I was really over the meal. I did not complain to the waitress ( the food quality is not her fault) but she knew I was not impressed at all with the meal. I paid $50 for the worst meal ever in Bangor.
google avatar

Mia W.

Yelp
We wanted to eat in but ended up ordering in from work (about 6 of us) and were glad we did. When we arrived, they were "taking reservations" because there were only two servers working. Most of our orders were completed, we requested a couple of condiments and bought additional items from the bake case, the lady preparing the orders said "it's Monday, you're asking me to do too much", right after we'd spent about $140 on takeout. The food was decent, but she was really rude. Hire more help. Period.
google avatar

Cyrus C.

Yelp
This is an example of a true Mainers restaurant. The food here is delicious. My favorite thing is the Maple Chicken. I love the train. I wish they would open a Governors in southern Maine.
google avatar

Anthony W.

Yelp
Definitely 5-Star establishment! I don't know why the average rating is 3.5 but it is not accurate in my opinion. On first impression we were shocked and very pleased to see the deep detailed cleaning going on by a solo cleaner in the dining room. This told us immediately that this place is something special. The professional cleaner (Norine Elkin-Proprietor of "Corners Do Count" Cleaning Service-local) was on her hands and knees cleaning the under carriage of the tables a booths, (which are neglected in most establishments) that we've visited. The place looked, felt and smelled clean upon our entry to the dining area. If you are in need of this level of cleaning detail, reach out to Noreen (before she's fully booked) on local number 735-4925 you can find her on Facebook, too--now back to the dining experience... We were promptly greeted by the very kind server Cody, who was attentive, friendly and professional. This family owned business has several restaurants in the local area and they have found some great staff who make or break the reputation of any business and this particular location is a MAKER for these nationwide independent expedited truckers. Now for the food--one word EXCELLENT! Price--very reasonable. Customer Satisfaction--BETTER than Satisfied--EXTREMELLY. We (wife and I) encourage anyone thinking about visiting Governor's Restaurant and Bakery in Bangor, ME @ 643 Broadway to do do and experience a culinary delight!

Cynthia W.

Yelp
Stopped in for breakfast and had the best service ever from our waitress Stacey. She has a great sense of humor and was extremely accommodating. Can't say enough great things about her!
google avatar

Pattie H.

Yelp
I ordered the giant cinnamon roll and it was over microwaved. The cinnamon roll was like cutting rubber. The glaze that was used on this roll was made with powdered sugar and way to much milk or water. Whoever did the glaze left chunks of powdered sugar in the glaze. My hot tea was served with warm water. Our waitress was very friendly but that is all that I can say about this experience.
google avatar

Samantha D.

Yelp
Excellent value at this local breakfast spot. The buffet has all of the basics, and you can also order from the menu. The service is very friendly. Blueberry pie was amazing. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Eva F.

Yelp
Governors is a family restaurant with some flaws. Set in Bangor, there aren't many good options for food, especially vegetarian food. Governors has a few options such as grilled cheese but the onion rings aren't very satisfying. The restaurant is tightly packed and rather cold, so if you don't mind overhearing other patrons conversations you still might want to bring a light jacket. The restaurant is proud of it's deserts, which are rather delicious, but also come in Paul Bunyan-sized portions so maybe one desert is good for a family of four. In summary, good food, family friendly, a little bigger than life. Not good for noise sensitive or easily cold people.
google avatar

Debra L.

Yelp
We loved the whoopie pie but didnt order mdals because it was a little more expensive than we wanted to spend. I truly believe if we ordered meals it would have been amazing.
google avatar

Allison S.

Yelp
Jill was our hostess. She got a table ready for our party of five in no time. Our server was Kelly. She did a great job. Great lobster rolls. We stop here every time we fly to Maine. Everyone was polite and friendly.
google avatar

Priscilla W.

Yelp
They are slack about serving rolls with the meals. They do not offer croutons with your salad UNLESS you ask. Coffee refills are slow and the restaurant is very expensive for what you get. I do not recommend this restaurant. Oh an here is the explanation I got from them. They could have offered a package of rolls for the mistake or at least a coupon. They show croutons on their menu on the salad and they show people getting rolls with their meals. You do not get what you pay for.

Yelp
Starting our day with a great breakfast at the Governor's Restaurant Cody our waiter is over all super service, attentive, customer friendly, warm, professional...etc! Was pleased with my breakfast. The restaurant detailer "Corners do Count"keeps this place super clean dust free environment. We saw her getting down on her knees deep cleaning this restaurant! If your looking for a Amazing home, office or restaurant detailed please look up Corners do Count in Bangor ME!
